  • Testing Async downloads with ASIHTTPRequest

    - by Baishampayan Ghose
I am writing a simple library using ASIHTTPRequest where I am fetching URLs in an async manner. My problem is that the main function that I have written to test my lib exits before the async calls are finished. I am very new to Obj C and iPhone development, can anyone suggest a good way to wait before all the requests are finished in the main function? Currently, my main function looks like this - int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; IBGApp *ibgapp = [[IBGApp alloc] init]; IBGLib *ibgl = [[IBGLib alloc] initWithUsername:@"joe" andPassword:@"xxx"]; // The two method calls below download URLs async. [ibgl downloadURL:@"http://yahoo.com/" withRequestDelegate:ibgapp andRequestSelector:@selector(logData:)]; [ibgl downloadURL:@"http://google.com/" withRequestDelegate:ibgapp andRequestSelector:@selector(logData:)]; [pool release]; return 0; // I reach here before the async calls are done. } So what is the best way to wait till the async calls are done? I tried putting sleep, but obviously doesn't work.

  • Is it advisable to use multiple ReadyBoost flash drives?

    - by ymasood
I am a fan of ReadyBoost and have seen good results using it with my work laptop. I tried something today and connected a second flash drive (2GB) and configured it for use with ReadyBoost. The first is an 8GB configured with 4GB for ReadyBoost. I'm using Windows 7 RC 7100 and was wondering if using more than one ReadyBoost drive helps?

  • What is the best algorithm for this problem?

    - by mark
    What is the most efficient algorithm to solve the following problem? Given 6 arrays, D1,D2,D3,D4,D5 and D6 each containing 6 numbers like: D1[0] = number D2[0] = number ...... D6[0] = number D1[1] = another number D2[1] = another number .... ..... .... ...... .... D1[5] = yet another number .... ...... .... Given a second array ST1, containing 1 number: ST1[0] = 6 Given a third array ans, containing 6 numbers: ans[0] = 3, ans[1] = 4, ans[2] = 5, ......ans[5] = 8 Using as index for the arrays D1,D2,D3,D4,D5 and D6, the number that goes from 0, to the number stored in ST1[0] minus one, in this example 6, so from 0 to 6-1, compare each res array against each D array My algorithm so far is: I tried to keep everything unlooped as much as possible. EML := ST1[0] //number contained in ST1[0] EML1 := 0 //start index for the arrays D While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D2[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D3[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D4[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D5[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two if D6[ELM1] = ans[0] goto two ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 //bad row of numbers, if while ends two: EML1 := 0 start index for arrays Ds While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[1] goto two if D2[ELM1] = ans[1] goto two if D3[ELM1] = ans[1] goto two if D4[ELM1] = ans[1] goto two if D5[ELM1] = ans[1] goto two if D6[ELM1] = ans[1] goto two ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 three: EML1 := 0 start index for arrays Ds While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[2] goto two if D2[ELM1] = ans[2] goto two if D3[ELM1] = ans[2] goto two if D4[ELM1] = ans[2] goto two if D5[ELM1] = ans[2] goto two if D6[ELM1] = ans[2] goto two ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 four: EML1 := 0 start index for arrays Ds While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[3] goto two if D2[ELM1] = ans[3] goto two if D3[ELM1] = ans[3] goto two if D4[ELM1] = ans[3] goto two if D5[ELM1] = ans[3] goto two if D6[ELM1] = ans[3] goto two ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 five: EML1 := 0 start index for arrays Ds While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[4] goto two if D2[ELM1] = ans[4] goto two if D3[ELM1] = ans[4] goto two if D4[ELM1] = ans[4] goto two if D5[ELM1] = ans[4] goto two if D6[ELM1] = ans[4] goto two ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 six: EML1 := 0 start index for arrays Ds While EML1 < EML if D1[ELM1] = ans[0] return 1 //good row of numbers if D2[ELM1] = ans[0] return 1 if D3[ELM1] = ans[0] return 1 if D4[ELM1] = ans[0] return 1 if D5[ELM1] = ans[0] return 1 if D6[ELM1] = ans[0] return 1 ELM1 = ELM1 + 1 return 0 As language of choice, it would be pure c

  • Quantum PSO and Charged PSO (PSO = Particle Swarm Optimizer)

    - by The Elite Gentleman
Hi Guys I need to implement PSO's (namely charged and quantum PSO's). My questions are these: What Velocity Update strategy do each PSO's use (Synchronous or Asynchronous particle update) What social networking topology does each of the PSO's use (Von Neumann, Ring, Star, Wheel, Pyramid, Four Clusters) For now, these are my issues. All your help will be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Is Haskell "mainstream", or is it mainly used by hobbyists and academics?

    - by Asher
I came across a post where someone wrote something inaccurate about Haskell (won't go into it) and he got flammed for it. Which (pleasantly) surprised me. About 3 years ago I read this joke about Haskell: All the haskell programmers in the world can fit into a 747 and if that plane were to crash no one would care... or something along those lines. Which brings me to my question: how healthy is the Haskell community, anyway? Is Haskell "mainstream"? Is it mainly used by hobbiest and academics or someone making some serious money from it (which is the true yardstick of how good a language is - just kidding, geez!)?

  • Breadth-First in Prolog

    - by Ricardo
What is the general idea of using breadth-first over the default depth-first search scheme in Prolog? Not taking infinite branches? Is there any general way to use breadth-first in Prolog? I've been googling around and I didn't find too much useful info for a novice.

  • Excel 'recently used list' not showing on start menu, but working within excel

    - by Margaret Thorpe
In windows 7 when you pin Excel 2007 to the start menu, it usually has a small arrow which shows your recently opened documents. Mine only shows permanently pinned documents. It used to work until I tried Office 2010 and then uninstalled it. If I open Excel and click on the file menu, I can see all the recently opened documents so they are being recorded somewhere... Any idea on how to restore it so I can view them on the start menu - Which I always used before?

  • How do I login to SQL Server without having to use "Run as Administrator" when starting Management S

    - by MedicineMan
When I start Management Studio, unless I use the "Run as Administrator" selection, I cannot login to my local SQL Server. Is this normal? I am a normal developer and don't believe I have a need for high security on my local machine. I'm running SQL Server 2008, Windows 7. The error I get is: Cannot connect to (local) Additional Information Login failed for user 'MYCOMPUTER\MyName'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)

  • What could be the Java successor Oracle wants to invest in?

    - by deamon
I've read that Oracle wants to invest into another language than Java: "On the other hand, Oracle has been particularly supportive of alternative JVM languages. Adam Messinger ( http://www.linkedin.com/in/adammessinger ) was pretty blunt at the JVM Languages Summit this year about Java the language reaching it's logical end and how Oracle is looking for a 'higher level' language to 'put significant investment into.'" But what language could be the one Oracle wants to invest in? Is there another candidate than Scala?

  • What is the real meaning of the "Select a language [for] non-Unicode programs..." dialog?

    - by Joshua Fox
What is the real meaning of the "Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use" dialog under Control Panel-Regional Settings-Advanced in WinXP and Win2003? According to the dialog text, Windows will use this to display the resource strings such as menus. The treatment of text files is application-specific, so this setting will not affect that. But can I expect any other change in behavior from this setting? Any insights into what is really going wrong?

  • How to stop switchable graphics from switching to high-power GPU when charging the laptop?

    - by Saifallah
I've an Acer laptop with Windows 7 64 bit and an ATI Radeon HD 6550M Graphics card. Whenever I connect the power to charge the battery it automatically switches to the high-power GPU (ATI) instead of the low-power (Intel) GPU. There's an option in the bios to stop such thing but it makes the GPU runs always on high-power and I can't switch to the low-power GPU. How can I prevent the switchable graphics from automatically using the high-power GPU when charging?

  • How to counter the "one true language" perspective?

    - by Rob Wells
How do you work with someone when they haven't been able to see that there is a range of other languages out there beyond "The One True Path"? I mean someone who hasn't realised that the modern software professional has a range of tools in his toolbox. The person whose knee jerk reaction is, for example, "We must do this is C++!" "Everything must be done in C++!" What's the best approach to open people up to the fact that "not everything is a nail"? How may I introduce them to having a well-equipped toolbox, selecting the best tool for the job at hand?

  • Accessing type members outside the class in Scala

    - by Pekka Mattila
Hi, I am trying to understand type members in Scala. I wrote a simple example that tries to explain my question. First, I created two classes for types: class BaseclassForTypes class OwnType extends BaseclassForTypes Then, I defined an abstract type member in trait and then defined the type member in a concerete class: trait ScalaTypesTest { type T <: BaseclassForTypes def returnType: T } class ScalaTypesTestImpl extends ScalaTypesTest { type T = OwnType override def returnType: T = { new T } } Then, I want to access the type member (yes, the type is not needed here, but this explains my question). Both examples work. Solution 1. Declaring the type, but the problem here is that it does not use the type member and the type information is duplicated (caller and callee). val typeTest = new ScalaTypesTestImpl val typeObject:OwnType = typeTest.returnType // declare the type second time here true must beTrue Solution 2. Initializing the class and using the type through the object. I don't like this, since the class needs to be initialized val typeTest = new ScalaTypesTestImpl val typeObject:typeTest.T = typeTest.returnType // through an instance true must beTrue So, is there a better way of doing this or are type members meant to be used only with the internal implementation of a class?
