Re-install of MySQL requires deleting or resetting previous install's password

On a previous occasion, I installed MySQL to my local system. Then I uninstalled it. Now, I want to re-install it.

But on doing so, it asks for the previous password. My friend tells me that I have to delete a file manually to complete the re-install. But he doesn't know the path of the file.

Do you know?
