Problem with Ubuntu 12.04 boot

I'm having a problem as stated in the title regarding bootup.

What happens basically is that after grub is loaded the system doesn't boot. I get a black screen with cursor blinking then the screen darkens ( switches off ) and keyboard is unresponsive.

Today I have re-installed everything on a new hard drive and it happened again. This has been observed when running kernel 3.5.0-30 and 3.5.0-28. System is an HP6550b.

Can someone help me on this please ?
