• Server problem (duh)

  Sorry the title couldn't be more specific. I installed Abyss Web Server. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition and I have Wireless Mobile Broadband internet. I used to be able to access (and other people on other networks) my site by entering my ip address in the browser, but after I formatted, and the installed abyss web server again, this does not work anymore. There are no errors. I CAN visit my own site by entering my ip address BUT anybody else can't do the same, it just says "connecting" in the browser's statusbar and it never changes. I have consulted the docs and have found no help. Google hasn't helped with this problem either. Can somebody please help? Thank you :)

• Is DevCon.exe still the best way to restart/power cycle USB ports after resuming from hibernation in

  I have a USB broadband card on my Windows 7 laptop. It loathes resuming from hibernation properly. Back in the XP days I would issue a call devcon.exe from the command prompt and restart the selected ports (Saves you having to manually unplug and plug back in your USB devices). Ive been trying this is Windows 7, but the UAC keeps getting in the way. I'll start a command prompt. Issue the devcon command, but UAC asks me if I really want to do this, when I click yes it opens a different command prompt and launches the command. After the command completed this new prompt window closes faster than the speed of light and I cannot see the results. So Im thinking there has to be a better way to do this in the Vista/Win7 world...?

• Wireless bridge between two prolink adsl modem/router

  Allright, so i've got 2 prolink hurricane h5004n. Its a broadband adsl modem and router. My Pc is connected to the first one via ethernet. What i want to do is a wireless bridge to make the 2 routers "talk". I've tried hooking up the dsl cable (as they are modems) in both to try but when one disconnects as the other connects. I don't really know about the configurations to be done of all the DCHP or RIP and NAT forwarding stuffs. (i'm just writing what i saw) In short i want the second router to act as a wifi repeater but i don't see any repeater option and i also do not want to connect them via ethernet. So is it possible to do something? Apart from buying another repeater i don't want to spend anymore i'm done :S

• I get regular power surges and my UPS ticks a lot due to a welding plant. Is this good or bad?

  In our home, there is a mechanic who often use a welding plant. When he use it, I think we get a power surge. My UPS ticks madly (not beep, it ticks). Sometimes, I even lose power to the keyboard. When typing, some keys get missing. 1) My question is, is it good for the computer? The UPS claimed to have surge protection. But isn't it working? What should I do to protect my PC? 2) The second question is, I also have a broadband router which is not connected to the UPS. Will it be effected?

• How to build an outbound load balancer with linux?

  We have a small house in the countryside and there is no fixed broadband, so we had a mobile flatrate first, and for 2 people with 2 computers it was too slow, so now we have 2 flatrates for 2 client machines. So I pay 2 flatrates and have double bandwith theoretically. There is a local network in the house that connects everything. But when I am alone I wonder how I can use both connections at the same time. I want to build a solution where I can browse the web and page requests are spread between the 2 connections. I imagine there are expensive routers who can split the traffic between 2 lines. But is there a good way to do it with linux? The solution I am looking for will split the requests already for one page (multiple images, css files, javascrfipt files) between the two lines.

  I work in a company where we have a network ethernet and wi-fi, we would like to create a network where our customers could access our network but don't have access to our computer network. This access would be internet only, nothing more. The customers will not see our computers and the files that we share in our network. I have two routers, how can I do this ? A Cisco Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160N V3 and a Netgear Wireless G Router WGR614 v9 and about firewalls there´s only windows firewalls in each computer by default.

  Hi there, While looking into alternatives for Dropbox I explored the idea of a NAS. It would be easy to hook up the NAS to a broadband connection and have the users access the files. However, - The data needs to be encrypted on the NAS itself (in case it gets stolen). - The connection to the NAS needs to be secure (VPN?). - The drive needs to appear as a drive under windows (so no https). • postfix relay access denied from some IPs

  This is driving me nuts. I have Postfix/Dovecot set up on Centos 6 VPS for my emails. I can send and receive emails without any problems on my outlook (home broadband), on my Android phone (3G connection), however when I set up exactly the same email account on Outlook at my friends house I'm getting bouncebacks when I'm trying to send email (receiving works fine): 554 5.7.1 : Relay access denied Now if it wasn't working at all I'd understand, but why is it working on several internet connections, but not everywhere? Can someone shed some light on this? Where should I look for the problem?

• Will I have internet connection issues next day, if I unplug router at night?

  I did this regularly a few years ago and used to feel like I was 'being punished' by the Interent svc provider for disabling access to my computer, because trying to re-connect the next day became a constant pain. I have the same linksys router, a comcast modem, and hi-speed broadband through their LAN. Question: who or what is at fault for lousy internet connections, slow connections, or no connections: (everybody's tech dept. blames everybody else) The router? 10 year olds, maybe obsolete? The modem? came with the service plan - can connect three devices on a sharedconnection. The ISP: I read they not only even control and completely regulate bandwidth usage, but they also ration it!! (true?) So can I safely 'pull the plug' each night for security or not? thnx

• Pointcast Alternatives?

  I used to love Pointcast in the early days of the internet; it was a screensaver that, like RSS feeds, brought in all your favorite sources with news articles and stock quotes along with various other info and turned it into a visually interesting screensaver. It was before broadband though and I heard so many work places had to ban it that the company eventually folded. But I wondered if there are any modern day equivalents? I certainly have feed readers and some awesome desktop gadgets that bring in various things like news and weather, and I don't want a whole screensaver like pointcast. But I wondered if anyone out there had other suggestions worth taking a look at; making some kind of feed display of interest, or some other way to turn favorite content into more animated desktop background, etc...

• Process for migrating Dropbox to SpiderOak

  I want to move my data from dropbox to SpiderOak. I have 3 computers running dropbox. But I have a poor WAN connection with very limited upload bandwidth. So I thought I do as first step install the dropbox client on my server on the internet an download there my data from dropbox. Then after this I upload/backup my data from this server with a broadband connection to SpiderOak. After the backup is completed I setup the sync between my 3 computers so that they will not have to upload the data again. Will this process will work so that I don't have to upload my data again over my WAN connection at home?

  Hi everybody, I am using bsnl broadband connection, modem: wa3002g1 os: xp(86x) / vista(64x) A few days back I have changed the modem (don't know the previous modem no) because of some issues. since then I am not able to open most of the websites in firefox, IE6/8, chrome, opera. If i connect with other network like reliance data card, those websites are opening, if i connect bsnl the problem will be same again. I called to customer care many times, but no use.   I want to join two different home networks together like so: PC A1 PC A2 PC B1 PC B2 \ / \ / Gateway A <----- ethr. cable -----> Gateway B | | ADSL modem A ADSL modem B Both networks are of the basic residential type with identical configuration, with all PCs running Vista/7. The point is to temporarily join two apartments in a building for gaming and file sharing, and the holy grail would be: PCs on network A can access PCs on network B and vice-versa (file shares and gaming). Each network uses its own internet connection. Data between networks shouldn't take a trip through the internet (broadband upload speeds are severely capped) A network's internet access should continue working if the joining cable is disconnected with minimal configuration changes. How closely can this be achieved?

• How can I find out what's uploading traffic to the internet?

  Some program I'm running is constantly uploading to the Internet. It's uploaded 300MB in the last few hours. I could reboot and see if it stops, but I'd prefer to find out what it is if possible. I've tried using the resource monitor but it's totally nonsensical - even if I run a broadband speedtest, it barely registers any traffic. Ideally I'd like to find a tool which can tell me the current bandwidth of each application. I think NetLimiter used to work on XP but it's not supported for Windows 7.

  I know that under Windows there are multiple ways to get an app to autostart but I can never remember what all of those ways are. Is there a single unified way to bring up a list of all programs which are set to run themselves at startup and let me disable those I don't want? I'd prefer something built into Windows. I have Windows 7 Starter. But a free / open source / shareware tool would also be acceptable. (This time the software I want to prevent from autostarting is: MSN Messenger, Y! Messenger, and Vodaphone Mobile Broadband, which starts whether the dongle is inserted or not. None of these three are in Windows's "Startup" folder.)

  Most of the week I live in the city where I have a typical broadband connection, but most weekends I'm out of town and only have access to a satellite connection. Trying to work over SSH on a satellite connection, while possible, is hardly desirable due to the high latency ( 1 second). My question is this: Is there any software that will do something like buffering keystrokes on my local machine before they're sent over SSH to help make the lag on individual keystrokes a little bit more transparent? Essentially I'm looking for something that would reduce the effects of the high latency for everything except for commands (e.g., opening files, changing to a new directory, etc.). I've already discovered that vim can open remote files locally and rewrite them remotely, but, while this is a huge help, it is not quite what I'm looking for since it only works when editing files, and requires opening a connection every time a read/write occurs. (For anyone who may not know how to do this and is curious, just use this command: 'vim scp://host/file/path/here)

  Need help according to scenario given: Client end PCs: 400 + Network : Server 1 (Linux) : 192.168.2.0/24 (For Application, Internet not working) GW: 192.168.2.1 Clients: 192.168.2.1 - 254 Server 2 (Linux) : 192.168.3.0/24 (For Internet users) GW: 192.168.3.1 Clients: 192.168.3.2 - 254 Server 2 is connected to DSL Broadband. Server 1 and Server 2 both are on same physical network i.e. Same switches. Current issue: i have to deploy a file and print server but this server will be accessed by both (192.168.2.x and 192.168.3.x) one same workgroup. as both subnets are on same switched network. Limitations: Currently there is no hardware routers and firewall. Need to complete this task with Linux / Windows / AD. Tested / Worked so far: Configured one PC with two NIC's With the IPS: NIC 1 : 192.168.3.2 GW: 192.168.3.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 NIC 2 : 192.168.2.2 GW: Empty Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Kindly provide any solution what should i do to get sharing enable on both Subnets. • Which universal or driverless printing solution do you use/recommend?

  I'm in need of a driverless printing solution for Microsoft Terminal Services 2003/2008. This is mainly to support clients who are connected through broadband into our hosted servers. We were hoping that MSTS 2008 thinprint would be the answer but unfortunately it performs poorly in the print area. The files are too large. I found the following slightly outdated URL: http://www.msterminalservices.org/software/Printing/ This lists a number of products but I have no experience with any of them. I'd like a product that works/easy to install (as our clients are remote and not particularly tech savvy) and ideally I just pay for the server license and not every clients. • Mounting share over VPN

  I have a CentOS 5 web server which currently mounts a NFS export on my Mac OS X 10.7 laptop. It works great, except over VPN I can't get it to mount at all. I tried SMBUp but haven't been able to get it working even locally. It doesn't look like there's an easy way to install netatalk for CentOS 5. Even still, I'm not sure if that's the best way to do it. I tried using a GUI SSH client that can "mount a FTP disk" and it would work, except the files require root access and there's no external root access and the client can't elevate permissions. The basic thing I need to do is have the server be able to read the files off of my laptop, connected via VPN. The files are frequently updated (every 5-20 seconds) so I don't want to manually do that via SSH. Which protocol can work with both platforms and easily handle the latency introduced by VPN (and potentially mobile broadband)? Thanks

• Wireless Disconnects Randomly, then won't reconnect

  Okay, so I have a Gateway laptop, with Windows Vista SP2, and a Linksys-Cisco WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router. When I boot up my laptop, it automatically connects itself to my home network. Then at random times, it disconnects itself from said network. I go to reconnect it, but I get an unknown error and none of Vista's suggestions are working. Sometimes, after 5-10 minutes, it will reconnect itself. I've already tried updating the firmware. I can't install any other firmware, or make a factory reset. My dad owns the router and buys the internet and he won't let me TOUCH it. I can't do ANYTHING to it.

  Can anyone suggest a software tool (preferably under Windows XP or later) that would launch an application or script in response to a phone call being received on a landline phone line connected to a data modem on the same PC? or, better, in response to a sequence of touch-tones being played over such a phone line. This would allow, for example, using the telephone to manipulate firewall settings so as to create another layer of security in connection with remote internet access to that computer. I seem to recall seeing tools to do this sort of thing in the days before broadband internet access, when there was more attention to various tips and tricks for the dial-up modem, but a few attempts at Google hasn't turned anything up.

• Sharing Internet over Wireless Router

  I have a very strange question today - how do I share my dial up internet (yeah I know you are gonna say that is slow but broadband internet isn't available in my area), so dial up and 3G connection is all I got. I also have a Vodafone USB 3G modem that picks up 3G network, I am planning to use my Vodafone 3G modem in the day since I have free dial up internet from 7:00 pm in the night untill 7am the next morning. • Get lots of javascript problems when using Opera 11.00 to surf

  Sites like ebay and even superuser stop working properly when I use opera 11.00. Menus stop working everywhere from ebay to godaddy. Hovering on a menu item doesn't expand it, no sub menu slides out. This makes a large number of very popular websites unusable. Am I right in assuming this is a javascript issue? I use opera for the turbo feature (I have tested opera with and without turbo so it's not turbo's fault) because I'm on mobile broadband until I get my phone line sorted out. Turbo helps me save money, as well as allowing me to surf at a sane speed. Is there a firefox or chrome equivalent to opera turbo that doesn't cost money? I'm using Opera 11.00, build 1156.
