  • Expected time for lazy evaluation with nested functions?

    A colleague and I are doing a free R course, although I believe this is a more general lazy evaluation issue, and have found a scenario that we have discussed briefly and I'd like to find out the answer from a wider community. The scenario is as follows (pseudo code): wrapper => function(thing) { print => function() { write(thing) } } v = createThing(1, 2, 3) w = wrapper(v) v = createThing(4, 5, 6) w.print() // Will print 4, 5, 6 thing. v = create(7, 8, 9) w.print() // Will print 4, 5, 6 because "thing" has now been evaluated. Another similar situation is as follows: // Using the same function as above v = createThing(1, 2, 3) v = wrapper(v) w.print() // The wrapper function incestuously includes itself. Now I understand why this happens but where my colleague and I differ is on what should happen. My colleague's view is that this is a bug and the evaluation of the passed in argument should be forced at the point it is passed in so that the returned "w" function is fixed. My view is that I would prefer his option myself, but that I realise that the situation we are encountering is down to lazy evaluation and this is just how it works and is more a quirk than a bug. I am not actually sure of what would be expected, hence the reason I am asking this question. I think that function comments could express what will happen, or leave it to be very lazy, and if the coder using the function wants the argument evaluated then they can force it before passing it in. So, when working with lazy evaulation, what is the practice for the time to evaluate an argument passed, and stored, inside a function?

    Hi there, I've been trying to get back into coding for a while, so I figured I'd start with some simple SDL, now, without the file i/o, this compiles fine, but when I throw in the stdio code, it starts throwing errors. This I'm not sure about, I don't see any problem with the code itself, however, like I said, I might as well be a newbie, and figured I'd come here to get someone with a little more experience with this type of thing to look at it.   • Why cant I get a Thumb to be larger on a styled scrollbar in WPF.

    I have taken the MSDN templates for styling a scrollbar and have been trying to apply my different styles (Image on each track repeater and separate Image on the thumb) but I am unable to make the thumb change size. I have tried setting the Width on the Track.Thumb style and also in the ControlTemplate of the Thumb itself. For some reason the default size is only ever rendered even when the thumb actually occupies much more space. Does anyone know how to make the thumb render at the size that I want? I have a UITableView that in 'normal' mode, show a UITableViewCellAccessoryDisclosureIndicator meaning if the user taps the row, another list is showed, like HIG says: "Disclosure indicator. When this element is present, users know they can tap anywhere in the row to see the next level in the hierarchy or the choices associated with the list item. Use a disclosure indicator in a row when selecting the row results in the display of another list. Don’t use a disclosure indicator to reveal detailed information about the list item; instead, use a detail disclosure button for this purpose." When the user tap the edit button in the top bar of the UITableView, I think I have to change the disclosure because if the user tap it, a view for changing the information of the current row is showed (see the bold line above), again, like HIG says: "Detail disclosure button. Users tap this element to see detailed information about the list item. (Note that you can use this element in views other than table views, to reveal additional details about something; see “Detail Disclosure Buttons” for more information.) In a table view, use a detail disclosure button in a row to display details about the list item. Note that the detail disclosure button, unlike the disclosure indicator, can perform an action that is separate from the selection of the row. For example, in Phone Favorites, tapping the row initiates a call to the contact; tapping the detail disclosure button in the row reveals more information about the contact." Have I miss understood the HIG, or I really do have to change the disclosure style in edit mode of UITableView? If yes, how I can intercept the edit mode when the user taps the Edit button? Object_Pointer ist definied as access all Object. From my understanding the type Object is Node, therefore Object_Ptr is access all Node. What is gnat complaining about? I guess my understanding of Ada generics is flawed and I am not using System.Address_To_Access_Conversions correctly. EDIT: I compiled my code with "gnatmake -gnatG" to see the generic instantiation: package address_node is subtype btree__clear__address_node__object__2 is btree__node; type btree__clear__address_node__object_pointer__2 is access all btree__clear__address_node__object__2; function to_address (value : btree__clear__address_node__object_pointer__2) return system__address; end address_node; btree__node is the mangled name of the type Node as defined above, so I really think the parameter type for to_address() is correct, yet gnat is complaining (see above).

  • % style macros not supported in some C++/CLI project property pages under VS2010?

    We're currently evaluating VS2010 and have upgraded our VS2008 C++/CLI project to the new .vcxproj format. I've noticed that a certain property we had set in the project settings did not get translated properly. Under Configuration Properties - Managed Resources - Resource Logical Name, we used to have (in VS2008) the setting: $(IntDir)\$(RootNamespace).$(InputName).resources which indicated that all .resx files were to compile into OurLib.SomeForm.resources inside of the assembly. (the Debug portion is dropped when assembled) According to MSDN, the $(InputName) macro no longer exists and should be replaced with %(Filename). However, when translating the above line to swap those macros, it does not seem to ever expand. The second .resx file it tries to compile, I get a "LINK : fatal error LNK1316: duplicate managed resource name 'Debug\OurLib.%(Filename).resources". This indicates to me that the % style macros are not being expanded here, at least in this specific property. If we don't set anything in that property, the default behavior seems to be to add the subdirectory as a prefix, such as: OurLib.Forms.SomeForm.resources where Forms is the subdir of our project that the .resx file lives. This only occurs when the .resx file is in an immediate subdirectory of the project being built. If a .resx file exists somewhere else on disk (aka ..\OtherLib\Forms\SomeForm2.resx) this prefix is NOT added. This is causing an issue with loading form resources, as it does not account for this possible prefix, even though we are using the standard Forms Designer method of getting at resources: System::ComponentModel::ComponentResourceManager^ resources = (gcnew System::ComponentModel::ComponentResourceManager(SomeForm::typeid)); and do not specify the .resources file by name. The issue I've just described may not be the same as the original question, but if I were to fix the Resource Logical Name issue I think this would all go away. Does anyone have any information about these % macros and where they are allowed to be used?

  • How do I bind an iTunes style source list to an NSTableView using Core Data?

    I have an iTunes style interface in my application: Source list (NSOutlineView) on the left that contains different libraries and playlists with an NSTableView on the right side of the interface displaying information for "Presentations". Similar to iTunes, I am showing the same type of information in the table view whether a library or playlist is selected (title, author, date created, etc). I currently have an NSArrayController connected to my NSTableView and was setting the fetch predicate based on what was selected in the source list. This works fine when selecting a library because I can just set the fetch predicate to filter by the "type" field in my Presentation Core Data entity. When I try to adjust the fetch predicate for the playlist however, it doesn't look like there is any way to set the fetch predicate because I've got a table in between Playlists and Presentations to keep up with the order within the Playlist. According to the Apple docs, these type of predicates are not doable with Core Data (it basically doesn't multiple inner joins). Below is the relevant portion of my Data Model. Is my data model setup incorrectly? Should I drop the NSArrayController and handle connecting the NSTableView up by hand? I'm trying to figure out if there is a simple fix, or really a design flaw.

It is supposed to print the thead and tfoot on each page in theory, but for some reason the thead does not if it contains certain elements together.
