• Diskless Workstations

  I want to run diskless booting with PXE. The gotchas at the end of the Diskless-Howto[1] is quite long. I am unsure how to get this done. Here are my current possible solutions: use debian live and not ubuntu use aufs [2] The How-To states "confirmed to work with Ubuntu 12.04.". But maybe I am doing something wrong, I don't think it works this way for several diskless clients sharing one nfsroot. What is the most painless way to get diskless workstations?   I checked the post (Where can I find programming puzzles and challenges?) where there's a lot of programming challenges and such, but after checking several of them, they all seem to be about algorithms and mathematics. Is there a similar site for purely logic/functionality-based challenges? For example: - Retrieve data using a web service - Generate output X from a CSV file - Protect this code against SQL injection - Make this code more secure - What is wrong with this code (where the error is in logic, not syntax) - Make this loop more efficient Does a challenge site like that exist? Especially one that provides hints and/or correct solutions. That would be a very helpful learning site.

• Is it a good idea to make a game for one aspect ratio and arbitrary screen resolution?

  After several very small games I have decided to make something more standalone (2D) and playable. However, I have met the problem of every game that is going to be played in more screen resolutions. Basically, after some research I see that there are several solutions. This seems to be the simplest one: Let's say I define a constant aspect ratio for the game (16:9) and the whole game will be created for a resolution 1680 x 1050. The game will be rendered in this resolution and then I will be able to scale the render to match the player's display resolution. Therefore the game might be playable on almost any resolution, while it would keep the aspect ratio. So, if the game was run on 4:3 display, the top and the bottom of the display would be filled with black color. It seems easy, but my question is - Is this a good approach for a simple game? The game will be simple, but I want to maintain high quality.

• HP dv2700 series, Wifi not working in Ubuntu 12.10, Wifi Button always disabled

  I have a HP dv2745se laptop. I always had Ubuntu with the Native Windows Vista and Wifi worked fine. Suddenly my Ubuntu wouldn't load anymore, I tried fixing it for a week and eventually I formatted its partition and just installed Ubuntu 12.10 This laptop has a Wifi switch that works fine in Vista disabling / enabling the wireless connection. HP Wireless Assistant in Windows say Wireless is on. However, whenever I log in Ubuntu the Wifi button is always orange (disabled) and Wireless never works. I had this problem once when I had Ubuntu 12.04 and I fixed it by verifying in Windows that the Wireless Assistant showed the Wireless LAN in "On" mode. However, the same does not work now. I've seen some possible solutions that involve updating the firmware with apt-get. There comes my 2nd problem, my network adapter card is not working and thus I have no internet at all. Any suggestions? Thanks!

• 'Unable to mount Filesystem' Error

  Trying to extract data from a 'bricked' Western Digital MyBook Live 2tb drive. I came across a forum that advised to use Ubuntu (booted from a CD) on my Macbook. Managed to download and create a boot CD for Ubuntu (like this little operating system btw). Booted the machine with the CD and plugged the drive (which I had extracted from it's casing and placed into a external USB SATA case & plugged to the laptop). The drive is seen by Ubuntu but each time I click on the drive, it gives me the following error: Unable to mount 2.0 TB Filesystem Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb4, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog -try dmesg | tail or so I am new to this and spent quite some time searching this site to see if I could find a solution to this problem without troubling anyone. I came up with a few that came close but some of the questioners mentioned that they had lost data...which scared me from going further. I need to basically extract 1 particular folder from the drive. If I can get to mount this volume 'sdb4', there is a folder called 'My_Work' which I need to back up. The rest I have/had a copy of.   I want to copy some data from another machine to a local computer on a regular basis. At the moment I'm researching different solutions and try to find the one which fits best. Basically I want to open a network connection (or use an existing one), make a VPN connection and start a rsync process. This should be done on every logout of my desktop session or on shutdown. One possible solution might be to somehow intercept the Unity shutdown and execute a script. So is there a possibility to execute a script on GNOME/Unity shutdown? I'm aware that you can do it on system shutdown. How can I do this?

• After startup, display reverts to one desktop duplicated on both screens

  I have a Samsung R530 laptop. I'm actually running Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu (which is why I thought it would be OK to post this here). I'm now getting exactly the same problem on Ubuntu 10.10. I've got it setup with a secondary LCD monitor, and I've changed the display settings so the laptop screen and monitor are at optimal resolution, with the desktop shared between them. After startup though (typically around 10-30 seconds) the display reverts to 1024 x 768 on both screens, and the display is duplicated (i.e. both screens show the same thing). I think this is something to do with my video card, as I had the same problem when I was running Arch Linux. Any ideas?   I've done searching for my answer and have tested a few solutions, but nothing has worked so far. I'm trying to get a URL like this: http://baseball.sports.com to rewrite to... http://pro.sports.com/baseball-index.php However, I still need to keep the domain the same (http://baseball.sports.com). The reason being I have about 5 subdomains (baseball, football, soccer, etc) that I want to run off the same code base (pro.sports.com). Everything is on the same server. • Why can't Ubuntu find an ext3 filesystem on my hard-drive?

  This question is related to this question: Not enough components to start the RAID array? I'm trying to retrieve data from a "Western Digital MyBook World Edition (white light)" NAS device. This is basically an embedded Linux box with a 1TB HDD in it formatted in ext3. It stopped booting one day for no apparent reason. I have extracted the HDD from the NAS device and installed it in a desktop machine running Ubuntu 10.10 in the hope of accessing the files on the drive. • Broadcom bcm4311 rev2 Full disabled on battery

  Ok this is my problem... My problem begins while ago when I installed ubuntu 10.10. (is the same with 11.04,11.10...) My wireless card is disabled if the power cord is unplugged, and the only way to fix this is rebooting my pc WITH the power cord plugged and if I use lspci command, it doesn't show me the wireless card. is like if I've removed the wireless board from my laptop port. I've searched a lot of solutions for bcmw4311 issues, but none of them fix my problem because when apply one of the fixes, if I unplug the cord, my wireless card it just gone away... I have dual boot on my pc(w7,ubuntu), I've tried with full installation just to see if this is the problem, but not, is the same. On windows all work correctly with and without power cord.. so this is not a hardware problem, is more like a kernel problem. anyway I can use wireless with power cord plugged, but c'mon this is a laptop not a desktop pc XD haha any help is welcome

• IIS to parse php in a .dll files

  The .dll files ain't the dynamic link library. That's what the client side software calls for (cannot change). Its essentially a php script that should run and return specific values. However currently it simply downloads it and that results in a failure. That's what it results in on a Apache server: [Update] NewVersion=1 UpdateFileNumber=1 UpdateFile1=update1/LPServerInfo.dat ServerNumber=1 Server1=http://88.159.116.217/ here it is on IIS: 198.24.133.74:8080/update.dll?0 renaming it to php works fine for testing - it runs and returns values. I edited the MIME and set .dll to application/x-httpd-php but that doesn't seem to work in IIS. Any solutions?

If you occasionally edit files as root (I never do, I always use pfexec, wink wink), then you may have noticed that the vim (Vi Improved) editor that normally does filename completion via the <Tab> key now gives you something like: :e /etc/mo^I when you try to open up /etc/motd with a little less typing So, there are at least three solutions to this: Use <Ctrl>-E instead of <Tab> Use the "-N" flag when you start Vim :set wildchar=<Tab> (Enter those 5 characters, not an actual Tab) The reason for this? It seems that when you are root, Vim sets it's "compatible" flag, which makes it behave more like its ancestor vi. In turn this makes Vim set 'wildchar' to <Ctrl>-E. I have submitted couple of the solutions and all the time getting rejected in the initial screening. Now what I think is, they will see my coding style, algorithm and OOD concepts that I have used to solve the problem. Can you guys input more on it as what other details are taken into consideration and how can I improve my coding for getting selected. By the way, I did all my coding in either Java/Perl. EDIT I feel the biggest reason for rejection is code didn't work for couple of use cases.
