• What is spreadsheet useful for?

  I have been in computer business for 15 years in various roles (sysadmin, developer, researcher), and I have never encountered someone using excel for something more advanced than for formatting tables, or as an ad-hoc database that could have been maintained in a text-file. I had to do heavy data-processing and plotting and for that I used some perl scripts + gnuplot, got tiredof it, and went over to R eventually. 2D spreadsheet just didn't seem well-suited for doing statistical analyses over 5-dimensional datasets (not to mention that it produces UGLY plots). I attempted to use spreadsheet for time-tracking, and found out that I would have better been served by a relational database, so I gave up on using excel for that too. For example, it's important to consistently name tasks, and I needed to find out unique task names in a given column across several sheets (I had one timesheet for each month). How do you make such "query" in a program that essentially evaluates independent cells and has little notion of relations between them? So, what are spreadsheets useful for? Why do they have a bunch of mathematical stuff built into them when, AFAICT, people use them mostly as table formatters or bad substitutes for databases?

  ASP.Net has a built-in feature named Forms Authentication that allows a developer to easily secure certain areas of a web site. In this post I'm going to build a simple authentication sample using C# and ASP.Net 4.0 (still in beta as of the posting date). Security settings with ASP.Net is configured from within the web.config file. This is a standard ASCII file, with an XML format, that is located in the root of your web application. • SQL SERVER – Copy Column Headers from Resultset – SQL in Sixty Seconds #026 – Video

  SQL Server Management Studio returns results in Grid View, Text View and to the file. When we copy results from Grid View to Excel there is a common complaint that the column  header displayed in resultset is not copied to the Excel. I often spend time in performance tuning databases and I run many DMV’s in SSMS to get a quick view of the server. In my case it is almost certain that I need all the time column headers when I copy my data to excel or any other place. SQL Server Management Studio have two different ways to do this. Method 1: Ad-hoc When result is rendered you can right click on the resultset and click on Copy Header. This will copy the headers along with the resultset. Additionally, you can use the shortcut key CTRL+SHIFT+C for coping column headers along with the resultset. Method 2: Option Setting at SSMS level This is SSMS level settings and I kept this option always selected as I often need the column headers when I select the resultset. Go Tools >> Options >> Query Results >> SQL Server >> Results to Grid >> Check the Box “Include column header when copying or saving the results.” Both of the methods are discussed in following SQL in Sixty Seconds Video. Hudson is also free like CCNet and built in java. - CCNet has its legacy support to .Net applications where as Hudson can be easily configured on both the environments (.Net and Java). - One of the major differences in CCNet and Hudson is the richer GUI of Hudson provide user interactive screens for project configuration where as in CCNet we have to play with a few xml configuration files. Both the tools are capable of providing basic features of continuous integration e.g.:- - Source Control configuration - Code Compilation/Build - Ad hoc plugin tools to be configured along with compilation Support for adhoc tools seems to be bigger with CCNet e.g. There are almost every source control plugin available with CCNet where as Hudson has support for limited source control servers. Basically there is an interseting point to see is that there are 2 major partsof whole CI system one performed by build tool and rest. • Moving from Test Automation to Development

  I'm in an interesting quandary. I've been doing test automation using QTP for about 1.5 years, and am in the slow process of switching to a developer role in my same company. I also begin my Master's in CS this fall. An old friend is trying to recruit me for a Sr. Test Automation position that could potentially pay me $23k more for the exact same thing I do now. But obviously I would defer moving to development. The new company is much more technical overall (I would be moving from financial services to industrial automation, and they have MANY more software dev roles available. I know traditionally QA type jobs carry an odd "danger" tag, but test automation is really a different beast. Does anyone have any experience moving from test automation to development? Does the QA stigma exist? The extra $$ would be nice, but not at the expense of my career. I should note that my Master's will be on Systems/parallel programming, so one thought is that I'll get automatic consideraton for development upon completing my Master's. I also work 6hrs/wk doing game development with a friend.

• How should code reviews be Carried Out?

  My previous question has to do with how to advance code reviews among the developers. Here I am interested in how a code review session should be carried out, so that both the reviewer and reviewed are feeling comfortable with it. I have done some code reviews before and the experience has been very unpleasant. My previous manager would come to us --on an ad hoc basis-- and tell us to explain our code to him. Since he wasn't very familiar with the code base, whenever he would ask me to explain my code, I'd find myself spending a huge amount of time explaining the most basic structure of my code. As a result, each review would last much too long, and the process would leave both of us exhausted. Once I was done explaining my work, he would continue by raising issues with it. Most of the issues he raised were cosmetic in nature ( e.g, don't use region for this code block, change the variable name from xxx to yyy even though the later makes even less sense, and so on). After trying this process for few rounds, we found the review session didn't derive much benefits for either of us, and we stopped. How would you go about making each code review a natural, enjoyable, thought stimulating, bug-fixing and mutual-learning experience? Also, how frequently you do your code reviews - as soon as the code is checked in? Do you allocate a fixed time every week to do this? What are the guidelines that you follow during your code reviews?

• Computer Science Degree or Computer Engineering Degree?

  Hello everyone, I'm 23 years old living in Italy and this year I will be getting my high school diploma. I'm interested in pursuing a collage degree and work in the IT field. At the moment I'm self teaching myself Java (I also know python, html, css and mysql). I'm also learning about algorithms and OO design. I'm curious how important a college degree is for me, considering my age and if there is a big difference between computer science and computer engineer. There is a computer science university where I currently live but not a computer engineer one. For some reason universities that offer computer engineering courses are only in bigger cities such as Milan, Bologna, Roma. Cost wise, it would be cheaper for me to study near home at a computer science school. Career wise, would a computer engineering university offer me more work opportunities instead of a computer science degree ? Is it easier transiting from CS to CEN or vice-versa? I'm not exactly sure what type of job I want to pursue in the future since I'm still a bit undecided but definitely not system/network administrator, database administrator, game developer.

Persze a mi rendezvényeinkre is lehet panasz, amit szívesen is veszünk, hogy tanuljunk belole. Szóval nem sikerült az elektronikus regisztráció, pedig még fel is hívtak elotte, meg minden. Ennek ellenére a helyszíni listában mégsem voltam benne. Persze gyorsan megoldották, de azért mégis egy informatikai konferenciáról van szó. Ha már open source, akkor tényleg olyan nehéz lett volna Linuxos gépeket, odahozni OpenOffice (vagy LibreOffice, vagy akármi) telepítéssel. Volt is minden eloadásváltásnál megjegyzés. Azt már nem is említem, hogy persze a néhány kivételtol eltekintve a legtöbben ppt hoztak. Persze egy részük készülhetett OpenOffice-ban is. Mondjuk erre azért fogadnék. Persze volt aki nem ppt-ben hozta és még fel is hívta rá a figyelmet, hogy bezzeg o nem a Microsoft eszközeivel ad elo. Helyette azért egy másik fizetossel sikerült elmondani, hogy milyen jó, hogy nem kerül semmibe az open source. Ami amúgy nagyon jó prezentációs alkalmazás. (Jutalom nélkül, mi lehetett az? Válaszokat ide várom a blogra.) A tartalom, mint mondtam érdekes volt. Persze lenne min vitatkozni, de ezt esetleg majd a konkrét téma kapcsán. Idén nem vettünk részt eloadóként, de szerintem jövore ez már változhat. Az esti program is nagyon jó volt, különösen Soma buvész lenyugözo trükkjei.

• VSDB to SSDT part 3 : command-line deployment with SqlPackage.exe, replacement for Vsdbcmd.exe

  For our continuous integration needs, we use a powershell script to handle deployment. A simpler approach would be to have a deployment task embedded within the build process. See the solution provided here by Jakob Ehn (a most interesting read which also dives into the '”deploying from Visual Studio” specifics) : http://geekswithblogs.net/jakob/archive/2012/04/25/deploying-ssdt-projects-with-tfs-build.aspx   For our needs, though, clearly separating our build phase from our deployment phase is important. It allows us to instantly deploy old versions. Also it is more convenient for continuous integration. So we stick with the powershell script approach. With VSDB projects, that script used to call the following command (the vsdbcmd executable was locally available, along with needed libraries): vsdbcmd.exe /a:Deploy /dd /cs:<CONNECTIONSTRING TO TARGET DB> /dsp:SQL /manifest:< PATH TO .deploymanifest FILE>   To be able to do the approximately same thing with a SSDT produced file (dacpac), you would call this command on a machine which has VS2012 installed (or the SSDT installed, see here : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh500335%28v=vs.103%29):   C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   And from within a powershell script :   & "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe" /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   The command will consume a publish.xml file where the connection string and the deployment options are specified. You must be familiar with it if you have done some deployments from visual studio. • Switching to a career in Machine Learning

  My day job is plain old software development. I am also doing my Masters in CS (part time, course based). I took a course on AI and found machine learning quite fascinating but like most courses it only offered a basic intro. I intend to learn more about Machine Learning and if possible get a job in that field. When I look at job postings in this field it is clear that a Phd in Machine learning (or prior experience in the field with considerable expertise) is required for most of them. I'm looking for advice on self learning to gain experience that'll useful in industry. At least, enough experience to get my foot in. I will do the obvious ones like reading text books, papers etc. Perhaps any open source efforts that I can participate in or something I could do on my own? Apologies if I'm being vague here but I hope there are at least a few of you who done a similar switch and can advise. Thanks !

  I'm in the process of considering which programming languages I should devote the majority of my coding studies to. I'm a 2nd year CS student, majoring in IT security. What I want to do/work with: Intelligence gathering Relational databases Virus design Snort network IPS Current coding experience (what I'm going to keep): Java - intermediate HTML5 - intermediate SQL (MySQL, Oracle 11g) - basic BASH - basic I'm going to need to learn (at least) one of the following languages in order to be successful in my field. Languages to add (at least 1): Ruby (+Metasploit) C++ (virus design, low-level driver interaction, computationally intensive applications) Python (import ALL the things) My dilemma: If I diversify too broadly, I won't be able to focus on, and improve in a specific niche. Does anyone have any advice as to how I should select a language? What I'm considering + why I'm leaning towards Ruby because of Metasploit support, despite lower efficiency when compared to Python. Any suggestions based on real-world experience? Should I focus on Ruby, Python, or C++? Both Ruby, and Python have been regarded as syntactically similar to Java which my degree is based around. • Monster's AI in an Action-RPG

  I'm developing an action rpg with some University colleagues. We've gotton to the monsters' AI design and we would like to implement a sort of "utility-based AI" so we have a "thinker" that assigns a numeric value on all the monster's decisions and we choose the highest (or the most appropriate, depending on monster's iq) and assign it in the monster's collection of decisions (like a goal-driven design pattern) . One solution we found is to write a mathematical formula for each decision, with all the important parameters for evaluation (so for a spell-decision we might have mp,distance from player, player's hp etc). This formula also has coefficients representing some of monster's behaviour (in this way we can alterate formulas by changing coefficients). I've also read how "fuzzy logic" works; I was fascinated by it and by the many ways of expansion it has. I was wondering how we could use this technique to give our AI more semplicity, as in create evaluations with fuzzy rules such as IF player_far AND mp_high AND hp_high THEN very_Desiderable (for a spell having an high casting-time and consume high mp) and then 'defuzz' it. In this way it's also simple to create a monster behaviour by creating ad-hoc rules for every monster's IQ category. But is it correct using fuzzy logic in a game with many parameters like an rpg? Is there a way of merging these two techniques? Are there better AI design techniques for evaluating monster's chooses?

• Downloading specific video renditions in WebCenter Content

  I recently had a question come up on one of my previous blog articles about downloading a specific video rendition.  When accessing image renditions, you simply need to pass in the 'Rendition=<rendition name>' parameter on the GET_FILE service and it will be returned.  But when you try that with videos, you get the error message, "Unable to download '<Content ID>'. The rendition or attachment '<Rendition Name>' could not be found in the list manifest of the revision with internal revision ID '<dID>'. Through the interface, it exposes the ability to download, but utilizes the Content Basket to bundle one or more videos and download them as a zip.   I had never tried this with videos, but thought they had worked the same way.  Well, it turns out you need to pass in an extra parameter in the case of videos.  So if you pass in parameter of 'AuxRenditionType=media', that will allow the GET_FILE service to download the video (e.g. http://server/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_FILE&dID=11012&dDocName=WCCBASE9010812&allowInterrupt=1 &Rendition=QuickTime&AuxRenditionType=media).  And if you haven't seen the David After Dentist video, I'd highly recommend it!

• Installation failed with a Blank Screen

  Blank Screen, no Fix I've tried works... Hardware conflict maybe? First I tried AMD64 Ubuntu desktop. I got into the boot screen, however selecting install returns 1-2 seconds of code then blank screen no-idle. Then I tried the alternate install. Worked, some additional software installs failed. Go to boot for first time, I see BIOS load then black/blank screen. No flicker or cursor... screen turns off. (I am also having issues installing any 64bit OS legit WIN 7 64 Ult., WinXP 64 PRO ISO, also WinXP 32 Legit, WinXP 64Pro ISO returns BSOD on install. All win 7 builds return with CD/DVD driver error. The only OS that installs is beta build 7000 win 7.) Please help!
