• 13.04 Temp Save, rt3290, Kernel downgrade

  It's kind of a multiplying but I didn't wanted to open more than one topics. I'd have a fresh install of Ubuntu with tlp configured and using acpi_call to keep 7670M turned off. I was a short time arch user and with openbox and firefox it was about 60 to 70 degrees; wanted to turn to a stable release just for this reason. acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +50.0°C radeon-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter temp1: -128.0°C coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +56.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 0: +54.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 1: +55.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) The temperature is not seriously high yet can be lower. Another issue is my wifi card, rt3290: The rt2800pci module is fine and all that but the download performance is pretty bad alongside of annoying signal range and the prop. driver gives a conf error about some specific rt2860 code and integrales in pci_dev file. If I blank off the error making variables, module loads but the driver is unused. Since the driver is old, I was thinking of downgrading the kernel of raring to 3.7 or may be 3.6. Should &-or can I?

  So let's say that I've finished programming a simple, indie MMO game similiar to Tibia. I've got a stable server application that is ready to launch, i've got a tested bug-free working client application that is ready to play and the game's official website (ready to host) with payment system and client that is ready to download for free. Let's say none of them break copyright laws, and no matter how impossible it sounds, let's for now say it's true. My game divides accounts into two groups - free and premium. If someone gets premium, he's granted access to all possible game features, that of course, need server authorisation to work properly. Let's say that the "premium account" can be bought on the website for a fixed money/month. Free accounts mean that everyone can actually play, but without paying, you get limited access. This is what the mentioned payment system will be for. Well, I'm completely novice to these business entities issues, so in short: what, in terms of law, are steps from here to the state where my game earns money in a fully legal way ? Also, is there for example, something like verification if game gives the user what it actually offers when paying on its website ? I live in Europe, if it changes something.

• Can't access computer

  I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on an Intel NUC and it won't boot! The last successful boot was earlier today but now each time I try it gets stuck on the Grub menu where it prompts for memory check etc. This is not a dual boot system, so this screen shouldn't ever appear, and it never has before. It's GRUB version 2.02~beta2-9, which is a little disconcerting, as I'm on the stable sources. Unfortunately the keyboard (I've tried 2 keyboards just in case) is not responding at this point in the boot process, so I can't select the "Ubuntu" menu option in Grub. The keyboard works during the bios stage, so I can configure it to boot from USB, and I tried a flash drive with 14.04 on it. The flash drive works in my laptop but is completely ignored by the NUC (I tried all 3 USB ports!). It seems that I have no way of getting into the machine at all! The Intel support site was my first option, but the site is down. I expect it's a long shot, but if anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

• Unable to install ZFS (Ubuntu 13.10)

  I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and wanted to setup a server running ZFS/XBMC - The XBMC install went fine, however I ran into trouble getting ZFS working. Configuration : Ubuntu 13.10 (GNU/Linux 3.12.0-rc7+ x86_64) I attempted to install ZFS native using : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:zfs-native/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install ubuntu-zfs This failed to install due to "Module build for the currently running kernel was skipped since the kernel source for this kernel does not seem to be installed." Trying sudo modprobe zfs shows FATAL error : module not found. Here, they mentioned it was to do with lacking build dependences- I followed the answer which was to run sudo apt-get remove --purge ubuntu-zfs zfs-dkms zfsutils spl spl-dkms libzfs1 dkms Then, REBOOT. Then, do: sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essentia sudo apt-get install ubuntu-zfs " This leaves me in the same situation with "Building only for 3.12.0-rc7+ Module build for the currently running kernel was skipped since the kernel source for this kernel does not seem to be installed." when trying to install ubuntu-zfs. Trying sudo apt-get install --reinstall zfs-dkms also does not work.

• nautilus will not start, no right click menu, apps will not run due to 64bit libicui18n.so.48 overwritten with 32bit, ubuntu 12.04

  yeah so i broke my system trying to install support for 32bit apps. Somehow the 32bit set of libicu*.so.48 files replaced my 64bit files and now nothing works. I know what the problem is and how to fix it , what i need is some help. I need some kind soul running a 64bit install of Ubuntu 12.04 to simply go into their /usr/lib dir and copy the files that have the form libicu*.so.48* (8 of them i think, maybe 16 i dunno how many there is supposed to be since they were overwritten). Anyway if you could put those files in an archive, zip or tar preferred and then email/share the link. I was able to get these files installed but they're from the latest edition of fedora and while i can now use my computer , it's not that stable things don't start right smoothly every time like they used to .... and well its a simple ordeal to put things back the way they were if someone wouldn't mind helping out. also any help setting up the libraries related to 32bit apps would be great as well as i apparently screwed that up royally. • Issue with Banshee

  I went to install Banshee using Ubuntu tweak's App button. I clicked the stable ppa, and installed. When it was done, i tried to launch it, it shows up for a split second then closes. So I though it might be having issues with Rhythmbox's associations or something. So I uninstalled Rhythmbox. But same issue. So I try to uninstall Banshee, and it won't, it fails. I thought, well maybe if I tried installing it from the terminal, adding the ppa first (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa) updating apt-get, then sudo apt-get install banshee. But it fails. So now I can't run it, uninstall it, re install it.. or anything. I'm new to linux so I don't know how to go about rebuilding the files. But if anyone has seen this issue before, or has any idea on how to fix this, I would really appreciate the help. Thanks guys

• How to prevent computer from automatically sleeping and/or hibernating?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and my laptop* won't wake from sleep/suspend/hibernate. (Is sleep the same thing as suspend?) I'm not even sure which of these things it's doing. When I am done working for the day, I lock my screen (Control-Alt-L). When I come back the next day, the screen is in power saving mode, and no amount of typing or clicking (on the usb keyboard/mouse or the builtin keyboard/trackpad) nor tapping the power button will bring it back to life. The only way I can get my machine to work is to hold down the power button until it shuts off, then press the power button again to turn it back on. Obviously, anything I had open from the previous day is pretty much gone -- in particular, my VMs all get rudely shut down without any warning. This is driving me INSANE. I spend the first hour of every work day trying to figure out how to get my computer to stop locking up over night. What I've tried: Editing the org.freedesktop.upower.policy to disable suspend and hibernate. Setting power management options in "Power" section of "System Settings". Looking at all power management options in the BIOS (none appear to be relevant to sleep/suspend/hibernate). Reading every forum post/askubuntu post that I can find that's even tangentially related to the subject. My question: how to disable the automatic sleep and/or hibernate (and/or anything similar) in Ubuntu 12.04. I don't care if it's still possible to sleep/suspend/hibernate/whatever by pushing buttons or running some command or reciting led zeppelin lyrics backwards. I just want my laptop to be ready for work in the morning. *The laptop is a Dell Latitude something or other. I don't want to get too specific because I've seen a lot of similar questions get closed for being too specific. I think my question is generic enough to stand -- it's a question about the latest, stable version of Ubuntu.

• C++ Database vs Reading Files

  Ive been programing a C++ game/server for the past year. I have been using MYSQL for character logins, items, monsters, etc, etc. (im on windows). My question is, what are some of the databases that some big time developers use. IE. Battle.net, Diablo II, Diablo III, mythos, hellgate , etc, etc, etc. Do they have their own database they built? Or do they use an existing framework for logins, and character transfers. I do know that in diablo II, they use character files to to transfer characters into the game world. But what about the login into battle.net. Would it be wiser for me to stick with MYSQL, or is there something out there faster and more stable, or should I create a login type of system that looks through a file to see if you provided the correct password. Can't wait to get some replies. Thanks! PS. Currently the framework is much like battle.net, where you login into a lobby, create, and join games. The game server/lobby server are different servers too. So im just wondering about the lobby server for logins because I'm expecting several hundred thousand connections/logins.

• Moving soon, fiancee has new job: how to transition?

  I've found myself in a sort of conundrum lately and I figured Stack Overflow would be the place to ask this question. I normally post under my personal account here, but I'm writing in anonymously this time so as to make sure my co-workers don't find out too early that I'll be leaving them behind in a few months. My fiancee just landed a great software development job at a very large, stable company. She'll be starting after she graduates and just after we get married (May to June-ish). Her compensation and benefits package will be more than enough to take care of both of us, so I agreed to step down from my current position so we could move to a larger city with more opportunities. I'll probably take a few weeks off to decompress, but I don't want to stay unemployed very long. Since there will be less pressure on me to bring home a second income though, we're not as adverse to risk as we normally would be. I'm currently debating whether to eventually seek employment at a small company, a larger company, do contract work, or do something else entirely. I haven't been in the software development business long (2-3 years plus some small personal projects), but I've seen what things can be like at a startup (my first job) and at a more established, mid-sized business (my current job). Most importantly what I'm looking for out of a new employment opportunity is challenge and variety. Does this situation describe anyone on SO? If so, what did you do/what are you doing? How is it working out for you? Programming is a pleasure as well as a career skill for me, so I want to make sure it stays that way. Thanks to all in advance for any responses.

• How would you manage development between many Staging branches?

  We have a Staging Branch. then we came out with a Beta branch for users to move whenever they wanted to from old Production branch to the new features. Our plan seemed simple, we test on Staging, when items get QA'd, they get cherry-picked and deploy to Beta. Here's the problem! A bug will discreetly make its way on to Beta, and since Beta is a production environment, it needs fixes fast and accurate. But not all the QA's got done. Enter Git hell.. So I find a problem on Beta. No sweat, its already been fixed on Staging, but when I go to cherry-pick the item over, Beta barely has any of the other pre-requisites of code to implement this small change. Now Beta has a little here and a little there, and I can't imagine it as a code base being as stable as Staging. What's more, is I'm dealing with some insane Git conflicts, and having to monkey patch a bunch of things to make up for what Beta hasn't caught up with Staging. Can someone polite or non-polite terms, tell me what we're doing wrong here as far as assembling this project? Any awesome recommendations or workarounds or alternatives to the system we came up with?

• Ubuntu 11.10 Random reboots how to find root cause?

  All, This issue started with 11.04, I upgraded to 11.10 this week in hopes it would correct it, but after a few days it happened again.. A few times a day, randomly, my monitors will go black and the machine will come back in the post screen and boot up again. Sometimes it boots up properly, sometimes it boots to disk scan (I understand why...the machine just died with a bunch of stuff open) and sometimes it takes several cycles of this to come up. I connected to the system with my laptop and tailed dmesg, syslog, kern.log, and Xorg.0.log. I also ran a cat /proc/kmesg. Nothing is showing up in any of these log files when it happens..it's just like someone has pulled the plug. I just got through running 4 hours of the memory test with no errors. I have a AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core Processor and Nvida 9500GT graphics card. This system has been stable for like 4 years. I'm thinking it might be a hardware problem, but how do I find out? Thanks,

• No internet via wifi/ethernet after 14.04 upgrade

  I have just updated to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my laptop, and I seem to be having some internet problems. I have no internet connection through wifi or Ethernet, after both working in the previous version. I am not at all knowledgeable of Ubuntu and its workings, so if you could just tell me what to do, what to show you by just telling me commands etc. I think would be the only way I will understand sorry! I am asking this after many searches, all being in vein after needing a step involving some sort of internet access, which I can't get! • Coming up with manageable game ideas as a hobbyist game developer

  I'm trying to come up with ideas for games to develop - as per the advice on this question I've started jotting down and brainstorming my ideas as I get them, and it has worked relatively well - I now have a growing collection of ideas that I think are relatively original. The trouble is that I'm a solo hobbyist developer so my time is limited (and I have short attention span!) I've decided to set myself a limit of 1 working week (i.e. 35-40 hours) to develop / prototype my game, but all of the ideas that really spark my imagination are far too complex to be achievable in that sort of time (e.g. RTS or RPG style gameplay), and none of my simpler ideas really strike me as being that good (and whenever I get a flash of inspiration I invariably end up making things more complicated!) Am I being too picky - should I just take one of my simpler ideas and have a go?

This blog post explains: How to discover the data security implemented in Fusion Applications. How to customize data security Illustrative example. a.) How to discover seeded data security definitions The Security Reference Manuals explain the Function and Data Security implemented on each job role.  Security Reference Manuals are available on Oracle Enterprise Repository for Oracle Fusion Applications. The following is a snap shot of the security documented for the “Sales Representative” Job. The two data security policies define the list of Opportunities a Sales Representative can view. Here is a sample of data security policies on an Opportunity. How to customize data security Requirement 1: Opportunities should be viewed only by members of the opportunity team and not by all the members of all the territories on the opportunity. Solution: Remove the role “Opportunity Territory Resource Duty” from the hierarchy of the “Sales Representative” job role. Best Practice: Do not modify the seeded role hierarchy. Create a custom “Sales Representative” job role and build the role hierarchy with the seeded duty roles. Requirement 2: Opportunities must be more restrictive based on a custom attribute that identifies if a Opportunity is confidential or not. Confidential Opportunities must be visible only the owner of the Opportunity. Solution: Modify the (2) data security policy in the above example as follows: A Sales Representative can view opportunity where they are a territory resource in the opportunity territory team and the opportunity is not confidential. Implementation of this policy is more invasive. The seeded SQL where clause of the data security grant on “Opportunity Territory Resource Duty” has to be modified and the condition that checks for the confidential flag must be added. Best Practice: Do not modify the seeded grant. Create a new grant with the modified condition. End Date the seeded grant. c.) Illustrative Example (Implementing Requirement 2) A data security policy contains the following components: Role Object Instance Set Action Of the above four components, the Role and Instance Set are the only components that are customizable. Object and Actions for that object are seed data and cannot be modified. To customize a seeded policy, “A Sales Representative can view opportunity where they are a territory resource in the opportunity territory team”, Find the seeded policy Identify the Role, Object, Instance Set and Action components of the policy Create a new custom instance set based on the seeded instance set. End Date the seeded policies Create a new data security policy with custom instance set c-1: Find the seeded policy Step 1: 1. Find the Role 2. Open 3. Find Policies Step 2: Click on the Data Security Tab Sort by “Resource Name” Find all the policies with the “Condition” as “where they are a territory resource in the opportunity territory team” In this example, we can see there are 5 policies for “Opportunity Territory Resource Duty” on Opportunity object. Step 3: Now that we know the policy details, we need to create new instance set with the custom condition. All instance sets are linked to the object. Find the object using global search option. Open it and click on “condition” tab Sort by Display name Find the Instance set Edit the instance set and copy the “SQL Predicate” to a notepad. Create a new instance set with the modified SQL Predicate from above by clicking on the icon as shown below. Step 4: End date the seeded data security policies on the duty role and create new policies with your custom instance set. Repeat the navigation in step Edit each of the 5 policies and end date them 3. Create new custom policies with the same information as the seeded policies in the “General Information”, “Roles” and “Action” tabs. 4. In the “Rules” tab, please pick the new instance set that was created in Step 3.

• How can I sync with an iPod Nano 6G?

  I'm having no luck at all with this iPod Nano. I've tried the following software: Banshee - The iPod shows up and files seem to be copied, but they don't show up on the iPod. Rhythmbox - Same as Banshee. Claims to sync but no files available on the iPod gPodder - At first it wouldn't even recognize the device even though I set the mount point and device type. After syncing one file to the iPod from iTunes on my mac it now behaves as Banshee and Rythmbox. gtkpod - Again: Copies the files but they are inacessible on the iPod. Hipo - Doesn't even recognize the iPod Amarok - What is this, I don't even... So to summarize: After some fiddling I can get most of these apps to recognize the iPod and copy files to it, but they are not accessible on the iPod which sort of defeats the whole purpose. Help me out here. My continued harmonic love life depends on it. (Yes, it's the girlfriends iPod and laptop)

• Certificate error with Web Platform Installer

   A friend of mine was having an issue getting the Web Platform Installer to work on his Windows Server 2008 R2 box. He said there was some sort of cert error and asked me to try https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=158722 on my local machine to see if I got the cert error.  I tried it and I did get a cert error on Windows 7 64bit. I happened to notice that that url simply redirects to https://www.microsoft.com/web/webpi/2.0/WebProductList.xml . Out of curiosity I dropped to a command line and tried to run .\WebPlatformInstaller.exe /? to see if there were any command line options. It gave an error that said invalid URI. So we tried running it with the product list url like: "WebPlatformInstaller.exe https://www.microsoft.com/web/webpi/2.0/WebProductList.xml" . This seems to get around the expired cert that is on go.microsoft.com.  Here's a screen shot of the error:

• How can Swift be so much faster than Objective-C in these comparisons?

  Apple launched its new programming language Swift at WWDC14. In the presentation, they made some performance comparisons between Objective-C and Python. The following is a picture of one of their slides, of a comparison of those three languages performing some complex object sort: There was an even more incredible graph about a performance comparison using the RC4 encryption algorithm. Obviously this is a marketing talk, and they didn't go into detail on how this was implemented in each. I leaves me wondering though: How can a new programming language be so much faster? Are the Objective-C results caused by a bad compiler or is there something less efficient in Objective-C than Swift? How would you explain a 40% performance increase? I understand that garbage collection/automated reference control might produce some additional overhead, but this much?
