• How to install Revolution R Enterprise?

  Revolution R Enterprise is available as a red-hat rpm file. Normally I would use alien to install an rpm file, but the instructions for installing this package have an install.py file that I am supposed to execute. When I ./install.py, I get the following instructions: rpm: please use alien to install rpm packages on Debian, if you are really sure use --force-debian switch. See README.Debian for more details. There is no README.Debian file in the directory, and although I am not proficient in python, I can tell that there are at least four different directories with *rpm files in them. Has anyone had success with this? If possible, I'd prefer to install the Enterprise version instead of community version in the Ubuntu repository so that I can test it out.

  Possible Duplicate: How to Remove URLs from Google Search Engine We added a RSS link to our site for our content. Since then, our site visits have diminished. If a user is viewing the RSS feed, the link itself does not go to the actual article/content. Instead, each link goes to a main index - where the content may have changed, and the article they clicked on COULD be on that page, depending on its age. The RSS link structure is as follows: www.oursite.com/[search term]/rsslink/[title of the rss link they clicked on] I'm not trying to do anything black-hat here, but wondering if we're getting penalized for this somehow. If this is the case, could I do something like permanently-removed on all /rsslink/ pages?

• How to create a "shutdown user" or "shutdown account"

  Red Hat had a feature useful to me at the present time. There was an account, generally called "shutdown", and when you logged in with the account, the system shut down. In my specific case, I have Ubuntu Server running in a VM on my local system. The VM is running a web app, and when I'm done doing work, I want to shut down the VM. Unfortunately, I can't install VMware tools to get the "power button" based shutdown. Currently I login then sudo shutdown -h now, then type my password again, and things shutdown. Really, it's getting annoying all that waiting around and typing things. How do I replicate the "shutdown account" functionality in Ubuntu? A related question, were there any security gotchas that motivated people to stop using this kind of account?

• Canada vs Norway

  During the winter Olympics, I had a little bet with Sondre Bjells.  Sondre is the RD for Olso, Norway, a rising rock star in the .NET world and a very great guy.  The bet was that if Canada would win Gold against Norway in the man curling final, I would wear something funny and Norwegian like a Viking hat at Mix while Sondre would wear a Canadian jersey. Well, guess who won? • Secure Deployment of Oracle VM Server for SPARC - aktualisiert

  Vor einiger Zeit hatte ich ein Papier mit Empfehlungen fuer den sicheren Einsatz von LDoms veroeffentlicht.  In der Zwischenzeit hat sich so manche veraendert - eine Aktualisierung des Papiers wurde noetig.  Neben einigen kleineren Rechtschreibkorrekturen waren auch ettliche Links veraltet oder geandert.  Der Hauptgrund fuer eine Ueberarbeitung war jedoch das Aufkommen eines zweiten Betriebsmodels fuer LDoms.  Ein einigen wenigen kurzen Worten:  Insbesondere mit dem Erfolg der T4-4 kam es immer oefter vor, dass die Moeglichkeiten zur Hardware-Partitionierung, die diese Platform bietet, genutzt wurden.  Aehnlich wie bei den Dynamic System Domains werden dabei ganze PCIe Root-Komplexe an eine Domain vergeben.  Diese geaenderte Verwendung machte eine Behandlung in diesem Papier notwendig.  Die aktualisierte Version gibt es hier: Secure Deployment of Oracle VM Server for SPARCSecond Edition Ich hoffe, sie ist hilfreich!

• Small projects using the cathedral model: does open-source lower security?

  We know of Linus' law: With enough eyeballs all bugs are shallow In general, people seem to say that open-source software is more secure because of that very thing, but... There are many small OSS projects with just 1 or 2 developers (the cathedral model, as described by ESR). For these projects, does releasing the source-code actually lower the security? For projects like the Linux kernel there are thousands of developers and security vulnerabilities are quite likely going to be found, but when just some few people look through the source code, while allowing crackers (black hat hackers) to see the source as well, is the security lowered instead of increased? I know that the security advantage closed-source software has over OSS is security through obscurity, which isn't good (at all), but it could help to some degree, at least by giving those few devs some more time (security through obscurity doesn't help with the if but with the when). EDIT: The question isn't whether OSS is more secure than non-OSS software but if the advantages for crackers are greater than the advantages for the developers who want to prevent security vulnerabilities from being exploited.

Damit die mittlerweile fünfte Ausgabe dieser Community-Konferenz wieder ein solcher Erfolg wie in den Vorjahren wird, suchen wir (Stefan Lange, Melanie Eibl, Albert Weinert und ich) Sprecher mit interessanten Vorträgen zu Technologien aus dem Microsoft-Umfeld. Dabei wünschen wir uns sowohl Einführungsvorträge in neue Themen als auch die eine oder andere “Level 400 Hardcore-Session” für Spezialisten. • New JDeveloper/ADF book hits the bookshelves

  I've just received a nice new copy of Sten Vesterli's book Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development - Made Simple.  I was one of the technical reviewers of the book but I'm looking forward to be able to read it end-to-end in good old fashioned book format this coming week. The book bridges the gap between those existing books that describe Oracle ADF features, and real world ADF development.  So, source control, bug tracking, estimating, testing, security, packaging etc are all covered.  Of course, every project and situation is different so the book could never supply a one-size-fits-all guide, but I think its a good addition to your ADF bookshelf.  I'll hopefully post a full review in the coming weeks. Oh, and congratulations Sten,  having gone through the pain of writing my own ADF book, I take my hat off to anyone who goes through the same journey!

• How do I set a static DNS nameserver address on Ubuntu Server?

  I am trying statically to set DNS server addresses in my Ubuntu server running as virtual machine. I followed all recommendations on official Ubuntu support pages but I simply cannot get rid of my ISP's DNS servers set by DHCP. I assigned br0 interface on my host machine static IP address and eth0 on VM to use Google DNS and my own local DNS running on the second vm by setting it in /etc/network/interfaces. Tried to fiddle with head base and tail files in /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/ and tried to shuffle interface-order in /etc/resolvconf/interface-order but when I restarted network service I got the ISP's DNS addresses back every time. Is there a way that I can disable resolvconf and set up my resolv.conf file manually as I always did on Red Hat? Or at can you tell me which hook script keeps putting ISP DNSs in resolv.conf? My ISP don't allow me to change DHCP settings on my router so I cannot do it that way. Why is such a simple thing such as setting DNS servers got so complicated???

• Set up development site on another server/host

  I'm developing a site for a client. They've got a site now that's hosted at hosting.com. I'm going to move them to my VM hosting solution at edge web but I want to run some tests and have the client approve the site before changing the name servers to the new site/hosting location. How do I make this happen? I'm running a red hat/Apache on linux for the edge web hosting. I don't have control of the domain name (i.e. the client controls that right now). Edgeweb has set up a dns zone for the domain name so that when the time comes to switch we're ready to go. I'm a web developer and I understand the technologies that make a user experience 'work' but I'm unfamiliar with the server jargon and all that so, please be patient. Thanks in advance.

  Den ersten Geburtstag konnte das neue Channel-Programm von Oracle ja bereits Anfang des Jahres feiern. Die Bilanz seitens Oracle ist positiv, doch was sagen die Partner dazu? Opitz Consulting ist einer der Vertriebspartner, die in Deutschland mit mindestens fünf Spezialisierungen das Platin-Level erreicht haben. Sich innerhalb eines Jahres in den Bereichen BI, Database, Enterprise Linux, Real Application Clusters und SOA zu spezialisieren, war keine Kinderspiel, verrät Michael Page, Prokurist bei Opitz Consulting in Interview mit "ChannelPartner": Etwa 15 Prozent seiner Arbeitszeit hat er 2010 darauf verwendet. Ob der nächste Schritt das Diamant-Level sein soll, ließ Page offen. Sicher ist jedoch, dass für den führenden Projektspezialisten im Java-, SOA- und Oracle Markt weitere Spezialisierungen anstehen, darunter Datenbank-Performance-Tuning, Virtualisierung und Data Warehouse. Auch Oracle selbst legt noch mal nach: Zu den 50 Spezialisierungen im OPN Programm werden bis Ende des Jahres weitere 20 hinzukommen, die das Programm für Branchen wie das Gesundheitswesen, Energieversorger oder Retail attraktiv machen sollen.
