• A simple deployment example using Oracle Solaris 11

  Last week I was over in Melbourne and Sydney to present at an Oracle Technology Network System Administration Day. During a set of morning sessions, I presented on some of the new things that we've done in Oracle Solaris 11 and our focus for the future. One of the sessions I presented was giving a quick technical overview of what a typical application deployment scenario would look like using technologies like the Image Packaging System (IPS), Service Management Facility (SMF), Oracle Solaris Zones, and network virtualization. While it's just a simple example, it provides the basic building blocks for a more advanced configuration that a data center would typically deploy. Given these would likely be of general interest, I thought I'd upload the slides for others to view - enjoy! Google's guidelines suggested to me that this would be enough for Google to recognise our page as the canonical one and that one as the duplicate, and thus to show our page in SERPs. However, the opposite has happened - if you search for the page's title you'll see the duplicate page shows up but ours doesn't. How can we prevent this? Since the author 'owns' the duplicate page on zcommunications.org she can edit the HTML body, but not the <head>.

• Configuring trace file size and number in WebCenter Content 11g

  Lately I've been doing a lot of debugging using the System Output tracing in WebCenter Content 11g.  This is built-in tracing in the content server which provides a great level of detail on what's happening under the hood.  You can access the settings as well as a view of the tracing by going to Administration -> System Audit Information.  From here, you can select the tracing sections to include.  Some of my personal favorites are searchquery,  systemdatabase, userstorage, and indexer.  Usually I'm trying to find out some information regarding a search, database query, or user information.  Besides debugging, it's also very helpful for performance tuning. One of the nice tricks with the tracing is it honors the wildcard (*) character.  So you can put in 'schema*' and gather all of the schema related tracing.  And you can notice if you select 'all' and update, it changes to just a *.   To view the tracing in real-time, you simply go to the 'View Server Output' page and the latest tracing information will be at the bottom. This works well if you're looking at something pretty discrete and the system isn't getting much activity.  But if you've got a lot of tracing going on, it would be better to go after the trace log file itself.  By default, the log files can be found in the <content server instance directory>/data/trace directory. You'll see it named 'idccs_<managed server name>_current.log.  You may also find previous trace logs that have rolled over.  In this case they will identified by a date/time stamp in the name.  By default, the server will rotate the logs after they reach 1MB in size.  And it will keep the most recent 10 logs before they roll off and get deleted.  If your server is in a cluster, then the trace file should be configured to be local to the node per the recommended configuration settings. If you're doing some extensive tracing and need to capture all of the information, there are a couple of configuration flags you can set to control the logs. #Change log size to 10MB and number of logs to 20FileSizeLimit=10485760FileCountLimit=20 This is set by going to Admin Server -> General Configuration and entering them in the Additional Configuration Variables: section.  Restart the server and it should take on the new logging settings.

  Leviton Manufacturing is a global manufacturer of electrical wiring devices, data center connectivity solutions, and lighting energy mgmt systems. It's portfolio consists of more than 25,000 devices and systems used in homes, business, and industry. Leviton upgraded to the latest version of Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1 to support its service business with change management, purchasing, accounts payable, and an internal IT help desk. They consolidated seven Web sites that are used to host individually onto iStore. In addition, they run a site, using the Oracle E-Business Suite configurator, pricing and quoting for their sales agents to do configuration work. This site can now generate a complete sales proposal using Oracle functionality.

• Google index iframes on Facebook fan pages? (Hole website content)

  I have a fairly simple question that I've tried to get help from the guys on the Google Webmaster Help Q&A site but so far no joy so hopefully someone here can provide me with the information I'm looking for. I have a Facebook fanpage for my website, I have made an app that basically uses an iframe and puts the site within a frame within Facebook. All works good but Google is not indexing this page. I am using <link rel="canonical" href="#" /> on my pages so prehaps this is an issue?

• Attend my Fusion sessions

  The inaugural Fusion conference was 1 year ago in June 2011 and I was there doing a demo in the keynote, and also presenting a breakout session. If you look at the abstract and title for that session you won't see the term "C++ AMP" in there because the technology wasn't announced and we didn't want to spill the beans ahead of the keynote, where the technology was announced. It was only an announcement, we did not give any bits out, and in fact the first bits came three months later in September 2011 with the Beta following in February 2012. So it really feels great 1 year later, to be back at Fusion presenting two sessions on C++ AMP, demonstrating our progress from that announcement, to the Visual Studio 2012 Release Candidate that came out last week.   The last GTC conference in the US was 2 years ago and I was there as an attendee. You may recall from that blog post that we were running UX studies at the time. It really feels great 2 years later, to be back at GTC presenting two sessions on C++ AMP, demonstrating our progress that includes input from those early studies.
