• Is there a general rule of thumb for which browsers to optimize your site for?

  I have a site (recently relaunched it with a new design) that I have put off optimizing for ie7 for far too long. I was just never too worried about it. The site is optimized for ie8-10, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, etc.. Then I asked myself, is it even worth it? I checked traffic over the last couple months before the relaunch and about 1.3% of the traffic is coming from ie7. So, is there a general cuttoff percentage when you would not optimize for a specific browser?

  I have installed an SSL certificate on one of my domains and it works perfectly, but on some pages I include a Google Font, which causes my certificate icon to change in: instead of: The reason, according to Google Chrome (translated with Google Translate): Your connection to xxxxxx is encrypted with 128-bit encryption. This page includes other resources which are not secure. These resources can be viewed by others while in transit and can be modified to fit. So how can I make the browser 'trust' my SSL certificate, even though I request an external resource from Google Fonts? • Temporary background image while the big one is loading? [migrated]

  Is there a way, without javascript, to load a small image for a background before the real image is downloaded? Without javascript because I know how to do it with it. I can't test if the following CSS3 would work because it works too quick: body { background-image:url('hugefile.jpg'), url('tinypreload.jpg'); } If the tinypreload.jpg is only, say 20k, and the hugefile.jpg is 300k -- would this accomplish the task? I assume that both downloads would start at the same time instead of being consecutive.

If I use Firefox Stealthy Plugin and open the site in Firefox, It works like a charm without any problems. But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

Attempting to add two usb 3.0 ports to be provided by a generic usb 3.0 pci express card installed in the pci expres slot. The new card says usb 3.0 and has the blue ports. The card is installed into the laptop unpowered, then the laptop is powered on and boots normally. • Referencing external javascript vs. hosting my own copy

  Say I have a web app that uses jQuery. Is it better practice to host the necessary javascript files on my own servers along with my website files, or to reference them on jQuery's CDN (example: http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.7.1.min.js)? I can see pros for both sides: If it's on my servers, that's one less external dependency; if jQuery went down or changed their hosting structure or something like that, then my app breaks. But I feel like that won't happen often; there must be lots of small-time sites doing this, and the jQuery team will want to avoid breaking them. If it's on my servers, that's one less external reference that someone could call a security issue If it's referenced externally, then I don't have to worry about the bandwidth to serve the files (though I know it's not that much). If it's referenced externally and I'm deploying this web site to lots of servers that need to have their own copies of all the files, then it's one less file I have to remember to copy/update.

• Tab navigation and double content

  I have a website in which i use tabs to navigate between pages. For example, page a displays A as an active tab and B and C background tabs. If the visitor gets to the website via page B, i also would like to display to page d, but not a and c. Question: I know i can just create index2 for b for example, so when the visitor gets to b from a, i display a,b,c and index1 when visitor gets to b from d for example. Is that a bad practice? I know double content isn't good, but in which other way can i or should i approach this problem? The tab navigation i designed uses < li and id tag do display active tab, defined in the < body tag.

• How to Organize Subdirectories? [closed]

  I am working on my first major (several hundred pages) website design and development project. I want to create subdirectories for each of the website's categories, which in turn have their own subdirectories for easy user navigation. Example: website.com/directory. I am aware that by placing an index.html file within each directory, the browser automatically detects and navigates to that page, but that seems like a messy solution (having multiple index.html files, albeit in distinct folders), and I cannot imagine everyone does that. So my question is...how do you properly organize and use subdirectories?

• Why doesn't max-height hold in Mobile safari in landscape mode?

  I am building a small portfolio site for myself and have come across an odd quirk. I have an image inside a container, and to allow for multiple screen sizes, I am setting all dimensions in % rather than pixels. in iphone portrait mode, everything is fine. • Multi Column Block Too Narrow in Chrome

  My Web site displays song lyrics in a multi-column format, using CSS3. Both Firefox & MSIE 10+ display the multi-column text perfectly, but Chrome does not. This sample page shows the problem: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/test/html5/html5-multicolumn-test.htm The page uses a media selector, so your Chrome window must be at least 1280 pixels wide to see the effect. In fact, if you make the Chrome window less than 1280 pixels, you'll see the lyrics block change to a single column, of the same overall width. In other words, when Chrome shifts to 1-column to 2-column mode (due to the wider browser window), the lyrics block remains the same width, causing text to be squeezed together. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or know a solution? Is this a Chrome bug, or I am I doing something wrong? I posted this question on a Chrome forum a while back, but got no reply.

• Making headers readable on a multi colored background

  So the client wants a multi-colored background (think 4 colors of paint splats randomly all over the page. Because of this the headers are a bit hard to read. I've currently got them set up as black text with some white drop shadow, but it's still pretty hard to read in IE. How can I make the headers legible regardless of what is behind them (it's a CMS so position on the page is liable to change regularly)?

• Javascript slider with fade

  I've been scouring the web for a slider that offers a particular effect, but I can't find one. I'm hoping that someone here will be able to help out... Specifically, I need a slider that will slide left and right through a series of HTML DIVs. However, I also need the old slide to fade out as it slides. This is because I don't what to have a visible frame around the the slider, so I don't want the old slide to be cropped against an invisible edge. It's hard to explain in words, so here's a graphic. In each case the green slide is entering the view, the red one is existing. Is possible, I'd like the slide to use CSS3 transitions where available for the smoothest possible effect. Has only ever come across such a beast?

• Z-index preventing on hover attribute on another element [migrated]

  I have two different elements (div class="") within a larger container. Let's call them div class="overlay_container" and div class="title." The div class="overlay_container" has a subclass, .image, which creates an overlay over the entire larger container on hover. The div class="title" has a z-index of 10,000 and lies over .image and therefore over the overlay. Unfortunately, when you hover over "title," the subclass overlay image underneath disappears. I know the problem is obviously that the "title" div is right over the other divs and therefore the on hover will disappear due to the z-index. But how do I fix this? How do I make it so that when you hover over the "title," the .image overlay still appears? If your answer involves jQuery, could you please tell me where to put the script (before the /head tag)? • Mobile web app, styling in percentages; I can't get height to work [migrated]

  I am building a mobile app for a band and obviously want it to display well in all the plethora of handsets out there today. I built it at first for my own device and it looks and works great, so now I am reworking it in percentages so that it works in all devices. I have a slider (jquerytools) going on and if i set width to 100% then it is perfectly wide in my iphone and my ipad... success, however I am not having any luck with height. It seems to only accept a height in px. • Multiple style sheets best practice

  I currently am working on a project which has one large style sheet for about 20 pages. The style sheet contains some styles which are specific for certain pages. I'd like to break the style sheet up so there is one style sheet for each page with one master style sheet that handles everything generic. The reason I want to do this is so people can work on multiple pages without having to worry about who has that large style sheet checked out (I'm using TFS). Is this good practice?

• Properly create centered vertical navigation list with a hover image on both sides?

  I have a navigation list I placed inside of a , I am attempting to get an image that appears on both sides of a link when you hover. Basically a an arrow on each side of the link. I have managed to get the effect I am looking for with: <ul> <li style=""> <a href="#">Services</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">About</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">Media</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">FAQ</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">Portfolio</a> </li> <li> <a href="#">Contact</a> </li> </ul> .nav ul{ list-style:none; text-align:center; } .nav li:hover a:before, .nav li:hover a:after { content:url(../images/nav_bullet.png); } The end result will look like the following but with the list centered: link >> Hovered Link << link However I am not sure if that is the best way of going about it, and the image is too close to the text. I tried placing a margin and padding but that didn't work. To top of it off, the image is not vertically centered with the link text. Anyone know of a proper way to do this as I am just going by trial and error? Thank you in advance!

I have beent rying to find scripts dedicated to this but i cant find any. Maybe someone can give me a headstart or pointer in doing this. Or has a script i can work off of? Here is my objective. To create a slide down menu that slides down and up on click but retains this look to it.
