  Hi everyone, I'm struggling to understand the Android AccountManager API. As far as I got thinks working I can use the blockingGetAuthToken method and specify whether Android should provide a notification for user to allow or deny the request. Another possibility is to use getAuthToken and check if KEY_INTENT is returned. If that's the case I could start a new Activity where the user can confirm my request. My problem is that I would like to call one of these two methods from within a Service. Is there any chance to get a callback once the user has made a decision? Thanks for your help

  What do you do when you break compatibility on a common library used by many other libraries? What i usually do is: For every dll that reference the broken one Checkout dll Checkout vbp project Open vpb project with VB6 Ide Click on References button Uncheck MISSING reference and OK Click on References button Check references and OK Click on Make dll Close project This can be a pita activity, when you have many Dll to recompile and it can be error prone because you could miss some Dll (anyway we have continuous integration that alert this cases). What's your best practice to handle this scenario?

• How to add children of an ItemsControl where the children should decide their own position in Wpf?

  Hey all I am using a wpf slider to display the time line in a video player. I need to add an ItemControl of some sort on top of this so that I can add buttons on the time line on certain positions in the time line (the buttons will hold their own position relative to the parent ItemsControl). What ItemsControl container should I use where I can add child elements that know their own position (based on their timecode)? I have looked at the different ItemsControls in Wpf, and it looks like all of them have a certain way to stack their children (Horizontal or vertical one after another)! And to add some more complexity, How can the positioning of the children be relative to the width of the parent ItemsControl? This way scaling up and down the ItemsContol will reposition the children! Thanks

• Is there a logging facade for the .NET world?

  I'm somewhat new to the .NET stack and I was wondering if there is an equivalent to slf4j for the .NET platform. For me, logging to a Facade and being able to swap out logging implementations as needed just makes sense. Furthermore, the wrapper APIs available in slf4j have saved me many times when I needed to use a third-party library that was coded against a single logging framework that I wasn't using. Is there a project out there that acts as a facade between loggers like log4net, nLog and Enterprise Library? Are there wrappers that allow me to shortcut calls to those libraries and direct them to another library? Should I start out an open source project to do this myself? Is this question a duplicate because I don't know the right way to ask? Conversely, is the common way to do this using aspect orient programming?

• Google Analytics API - Tying Behavior to Specific Dates

  I am using the API to understand the performance of Adwords ad campaigns. I need to know how to attribute metrics back to the date dimension. For instance, for a given date, if I have 20 clicks, 18 visits, and 3 goal completions, does it mean that: 1) All of these actions happened on the day in question and are otherwise independent (meaning that the 3 goals could have been for people that clicked any time in the past 30 days, not who clicked on that day) 2) The on-site actions are a subset of the click activity on that day (i.e. on that day, 20 people clicked, 18 registered a real visit, and 3 completed a goal) If it is scenario 2, does that mean there is a need to refresh old rows every day? • Google App Engine - Calling getSession().invalidate(); causes app engine to act weird.

  When I call hreq.getSession().invalidate(); app engine slows down tremendously. I looked at appstats and saw that on a page where no database calls are made, it was calling memcache.get and datastore.get 23 times each. The stack trace of these calls showed that it was being called from getSession(). This only happens on the production server. Every time I make a request to a page, it makes a bunch of memcache and datastore calls. This slow down goes away though when i restart my browser. When I changed the code to simply set the isLoggedIn property of the session to false, rather than calling hreq.getSession().invalidate();, everything was fine. As a test, I didn't invalidate my session, but I changed the value of my browser's session cookie, and the app engine exhibited the same behavior. Is this a bug with the app engine?

• Difference between an LL and Recursive Descent parser?

  I've recently being trying to teach myself how parsers (for languages/context-free grammars) work, and most of it seems to be making sense, except for one thing. I'm focusing my attention in particular on LL(k) grammars, for which the two main algorithms seem to be the LL parser (using stack/parse table) and the Recursive Descent parser (simply using recursion). As far as I can see, the recursive descent algorithm works on all LL(k) grammars and possibly more, whereas an LL parser works on all LL(k) grammars. A recursive descent parser is clearly much simpler than an LL parser to implement, however (just as an LL one is simply than an LR one). So my question is, what are the advantages/problems one might encounter when using either of the algorithms? Why might one ever pick LL over recursive descent, given that it works on the same set of grammars and is trickier to implement? Hopefully this question makes some amount of sense. Sorry if it doesn't - I blame my the fact that this entire subject is almost entirely new to me.

• Is there any way to get MSVC to pass structs arguments in registers on x64?

  For a function with signature: struct Pair { void *v1, *v2 }; void f(Pair p); compiled on x64, I would like Pair's fields to be passed via register, as if the function was: void f(void *v1, void *v2); Compiling a test with gcc 4.2.1 for x86_64 on OSX 10.6, I can see this is exactly what happens by examining the disassembly. However, compiling with MSVC 2008 for x64 on Windows, the disassembly shows that Pair is passed on the stack. I understand that platform ABIs can prevent this optimization; does anyone know any MSVC-specific annotations, calling conventions, flags, or other hacks that can get this to work? Thank you!

• Advanced Java book in the lines of CLR via c# or C# in Depth?

  I want to learn about how things work in depth in Java. Coming from a c# background, there were a couple of very good books that go really deep in c# (C# in depth, CLR via c#, just to name the most popular). Is there anything like that in Java? I searched it up on amazon but nothing seemed to go that deep in Java as the two above go in c#. I don't want to know more about specific classes, or how to use this library or that other library, I want to learn how the objects are created on memory, how they get created on the stack, heap, etc. A more fundamental knowledge, let's say. I've read some chapters of Effective Java and The Java Programming Language but they don't seem to go so deep as I'd want them to go. Maybe there are other people that know both c# and Java that have read any of the referred books and know any that might be useful? Thanks

  Anyone had success installing and using PySide on OSX? I am following the install instructions on the PySide site, though I'm running into issues building the API Extractor. I run cmake on the CMakeLists.txt file inside the api extractor dir and: This error is thrown- CMake Error at /Applications/CMake 2.8-0.app/Contents/share/cmake-2.8/Modules/FindBoost.cmake:894 (message): Unable to find the requested Boost libraries. Unable to find the Boost header files. Please set BOOST_ROOT to the root directory containing Boost or BOOST_INCLUDEDIR to the directory containing Boost's headers.   I've been using FULL-TEXT for awhile but I cannot seem to get the most relevant results sometimes. If I have an field with something like "An Overview of Pain Medicine 5/12/2006" and a user types "An Overview 5/12/2006" So we create a search like: '"An" AND "Overview" AND "5/12/2006"' - 0 results (bad) '"Overview" AND "5/12/2006"' - 1 result (good) The CONTAINSTABLE portion of my query: FROM ce_Activity A INNER JOIN CONTAINSTABLE(View_Activities,(Searchable), @Search) AS KeyTbl ON A.ActivityID = KeyTbl.[KEY] "Searchable" is a field contains the activity title, and start date(converted to string) in one field so it's all search friendly. Why would this happen?

  I don't like real-time debugging much, but if it's necessary I'll do it. Is there any way to figure out what line of code a StackTrace in Objective-C refers to? What about the variable it refers to?   Hi, I am writing a Core Data-based iPhone app and I am new to Objective-C. I have a bug that I am really struggling to nail. • gcc does not generate debugger info when using -g, -ggdb, -g3, or -ggdb3

  I'm using GCC 4.4.1 and GDB 7.0-ubuntu on Ubuntu 9.10. However, GCC won't generate debugger info when using any of the following switches: -g, -g3, -ggdb, or -ggdb3. So when I run the program with GDB, its as if there was no debugger information generated. I have created very simple test source files in a new, empty folder. • Android - Convert Color Resource to Color in Domain Object

  I have a domain object, where I created a method to return a text color based on the internal state of the domain object. I have defined the colors in a color.xml file as resources. The problem I have now, is that I would like to return a Color object instead of a resource ID from the domain object method. This way I can set the text color of a TextView by just calling textView.setTextColor(domainObj.getTextColor()) since it expects a Color object and not a resource ID. Currently, in an Activity, I can call getResources().getColor(domainObj.getTextColorResource()) to convert a resource ID to a color, but I would like this done in the domain object and I am not sure how I would do this when I do not have access to the getResources method. Are there any cleaner options than passing in a Resource object into the method, or domain object? Thanks

• Best way to fetch data from a single database table with multiple threads?

  Hi, we have a system where we collect data every second on user activity on multiple web sites. we dump that data into a database X (say MS SQL Server). we now need to fetch data from this single table from daatbase X and insert into database Y (say mySql). we want to fetch time based data from database X through multiple threads so that we fetch as fast as we can. Once fetched and stored in database Y, we will delete data from database X. Are there any best practices on this sort of design? any specific things to take care on table design like sharing or something? Are there any other things that we need to take care to make sure we fetch it as fast as we can from threads running on multiple machines? Thanks in advance! Ravi

We do the release and nil dance. Later the entire view stack is not needed, so dealloc is called. Since I already have the release and nil stuff in viewDidUnload, I don't have it in dealloc. Perfect. But if there's no low memory error, viewDidUnload is never called. dealloc is called and since I don't have the release and nil stuff, there's a memory leak. In other words, will dealloc ever be called without viewDidUnload being called first? And the practical follow up to that is, if I alloc and set something in viewDidLoad, and I release it and set to nil in viewDidUnload, do I leave it out of dealloc, or do I do a defensive nil check in dealloc and release/nil it if it's not nil?

• How can I access the bookmarks toolbar using only shortcuts in Firefox 3

  I am not interested in accessing the bookmarks menu or sidebar. The specific goal that I'm trying to accomplish is to be able to easily navigate (using only the keyboard) through the live bookmarks loaded from stack overflow by means of a feed reader and located on my bookmarks toolbar. Notes: I have found an add-on that supposedly does exactly what I need: Bookmark Keys, but unfortunately it doesn't work in firefox 3), and is not being currently maintained. I'm using WinXP at work and Ubuntu 8.04 at home. Edit: changed bookmark keys "not compatible" with firefox 3 to "not working" in firefox 3
