• How to troubleshoot memory card read?

  The built in memory card reader in my laptop mounts SD cards as read-only only. This happens both in Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Most of the time. Ever now an then it works. After a some non-deterministic combination of uninstalling/reinstalling/disabling/enabling of the driver with the mandatory reboots the card reader works for a while. Is there any sane way to troubleshoot if it's an actual hardware problem, or just a matter of drivers? I've tested it with several SD cards, that work just fine in other devices. • How to troubleshoot slow powerconnect 62xx management interface

  Our Dell Powerconnect 62xx switches have a very high packetloss on the management interface. I presume this is caused by a new appliance which uses multicast for communication but I am not sure. Our network setup is following: servers a - Dell PC6248 | servers b - Dell PC6248 |- juniper core router servers c - Dell PC6248 | What we see is that the multicast traffic arrives at all servers (but only the servers b use the multicast) and I fear that this multicast traffic floods the switch management interface. The switches' management interfaces are reachable via vlan101, all other traffic is sent over other vlans. When I tcpdump on one of the 2 servers with a vlan 101 ip address, I only get a few arp requests but almost nothing. When I try to ping between these 2 servers, it works like a charm. I would like to know what a good way is to troubleshoot this problem and maybe help me understand what is going wrong on that subnet.

• Windows 7: Wi-Fi connection drops intermittently - only returns after "Troubleshoot connection" resets the adapter

  On our laptop (running Windows 7) the Wi-Fi connection drops intermittently. Symptoms: Connectivity is suddenly lost, and the "signal strenght" indicator in the tray shows zero strength and a yellow "star" symbol. What happens then: The problem does not resolve itself by just waiting. If I click on the tray icon, the "Windows network diagnostics" wizard pops up and tells me that there is a networking problem (duh). If I click on the "repair" button (not sure about the wording), the wizard works for a while, then reports that it has reset the network adapter. Then Wi-Fi works again. While the above procedure has worked every time so far, it is very annoying. It takes 10-20s to repair the connection, and in the meantime downloads, video streams etc. may have been aborted. Some more details: The problem occurs without any apparent regularity, but usually a few minutes after powerup (though not every time). It happens frequently enough to be annoying. It is unlikely to be a router problem - another laptop running at the same time usually has no Wi-Fi problems. I am at a loss about what to try to troubleshoot this. Any ideas? • Troubleshoot Perl module installation on Mac OS X

  I'm trying to install the Perl module Set::IntervalTree on Mac OS X. I recently installed it today on an Ubuntu box with no problem. I simply started cpan, entered install Set:IntervalTree, and it all worked out. However, the installation failed on Mac OS X--it spits out a huge list of compiler errors (below). How would I troubleshoot this. • How to troubleshoot web server lock-up (Debian Squeeze)

  Every once in a while, my web server slows so significantly, it seems locked up. Can't SSH in, no sites being served. It's a VPS that started out as Debian 5 which I upgraded to testing (squeeze). It's a typical LAMP set-up with the sole purpose of running a couple of wordpress sites. One time when it locked up, I got to one of the sites, but it was wordpress complaining it couldn't establish a database connection. So it seemed as if something was really chewing up the CPU and mysqld either timed out, or possibly failed and couldn't restart. But since I couldn't SSH in I feel more inclined to attribute it to CPU. But the only processes running now, aside from OS and kernel stuff: apache mysqld python (for fail2ban) sshd exim4 It has 512M of RAM and 1.5 GB of swap. Every time I check on it, it has plenty of free memory and is using virtually no swap (usually 2-3M). And since I am running fail2ban I don't think I'm getting ddosed. • How to troubleshoot performance issues of PHP, MySQL and generic I/O

  I have a WordPress based website running on a shared hosting. Its response time is very decent (around 2s to retrieve the HTML page and 5s to load all the resources). I was planning to move it to a dedicated virtual server (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS), which should theoretically improve things and make them more consistent given its not shared. However I observed severe performance degredation, with the page taking 10seconds to be generated. I ruled out network issues by editing /etc/hosts on the server and mapping the domain to 127.0.0.1. I used the Apache load tester ab to get the HTML, so JS, CSS and images are all excluded. It still took 10 seconds. I have Zpanel installed on the server which also uses MySQL, and its pages come up quite fast (1.5s) and also phpMyAdmin. Performing some queries on the wordpress database directly through phpMyAdmin returns them quite fast too, with query times in the 10 to 30 millisecond region. Memory is also sufficient, with only 800Mb being used of the 1Gb physical memory available, so it doesn't seem to be a swap issue either. I have also installed APC to try to improve the PHP performance, but it didn't have any effect. What else should I look for? What could be causing this degradation in performance? Could it be some kind of I/O issue since I am running on a cloud based virtual server? I wish to be able to raise the issue with my provider but without showing actual data from some diagnosis I am afraid he will just blame my application. • How do I troubleshoot a slow hard drive?

  My computer is suffering of slow-downs and I'm not surprised (it's around 6 years old). Here's what I've verified: They are not very frequent (only a couple of times a day). When they happen a single application will hang for 10-60 seconds, while the rest don't hang but also get slow. Even as it is happening, the CPU usage stays low. It happens to applications (such as text editor, firefox, skype). It never happens to some applications (such as games) which I use for hours under heavy CPU load. Also of note: The Graphics card and PSU are new (around a year). Though I have a decent amount of software installed right now, this was happening even right after I reinstalled Windows. This HDD has been through many partinioning schemes, and a few heavy operations (such as moving around 200GB of data). Because of the above, I am already 70% sure the problem is with the hard drive. Before I replace it, however, I want to rule out other less likely possibilities (such as RAM, software, or PSU). I don't have the money to replace the entire box right now, but I can easily replace one of the components. I've read several questions (such as this one) which give general guidance on troubleshooting an unknown issue, that is not what I'm looking for here. My main question is: What tests or benchmarks can I run to verify I have a problematic hard drive? I don't need to solve this problem, I am content with just making sure it's the hard drive. I could borrow a newer hard drive from a friend and see if it gets better. A positive result would rule out all other components, but it wouldn't rule out a software issue (since this new hard drive won't have any of the software I use daily). Running on Windows/Linux.

Backups using Windows Server Backup fail with the error: The backup operation that started at '?2011?-?01?-?02T10:37:01.230000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved. I have traced this to a problem with the Hyper-V VSS writer. vssadmin list writers reports: Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de} Writer Instance Id: {fcf0dd79-d282-4465-88ae-7b6857e055c2} State: [8] Failed Last error: Inconsistent shadow copy However I can't get any further. A few relevant facts: I get the error even if all the VMs are shut down If I disable the Hyper-V VSS Writer by stopping the Hyper-V Management Service backup completes OK There are no errors in the Hyper-V-VMMS application log I tried to set tracing for VSS but can't get any output for some reason. • Troubleshoot dropped wireless connections

  I was recently hired in the IT department of a small company (~180 users) and one of the issues that people have been complaining about is having their wi-fi connections drop during meetings. The company is using an HP ProCurve Wireless LAN with 10 APs and a controller unit located in the server room. I don't have any experience troubleshooting WLAN in a multi-AP environment, so I'm trying to at least gather information using free or cheap tools. I did a basic site survey using the free version of Ekahau HeatMapper and discovered the following in one of the conference rooms that has been a problem. The program picked up three access points (plus a bunch of others with much lower signals that were out of range): AP 1: SSID: "Unknown SSID" - Signal strength: -48 dBm - -40 dBm. Channel: 2 AP 2: SSID "CompanyMain" - Signal strength: -35 dBm or greater. Channel: 2. Security: WEP (This is the main SSID for the company's WLAN.) AP 3: SSID: "CompanyGuest" - Signal strength: -40 dBm - -35 dBm. Channel: 2. Security: WPA2 (This SSID is the company's "guest" WLAN, which was setup to allow Internet access, but prevent network access.) Is there anything that you see that is clearly a problem from the above? I'm assuming that the unknown SSID might be a big problem, and that it is an AP from a neighboring office that is causing interference. Does that seem likely? Also, regarding channel, should we try changing the channels of our APs to avoid interference with that unknown SSID? (Since everything seems to be on Channel 2?) Should our APs be on different channels? In other words, should the CompanyMain and CompanyGuest APs be on different channels? Finally, any recommendations for free/cheap tools to help me figure this out, and/or a good methodology to follow? Thanks in advance for any help. Jack

  Hi, I'm experiencing intermittent connection errors in our home network from two different computers, normally "Connection Reset" when browsing, but also other issues such as very slow throughput. I have approximately a network setup as below: ISP-Cable Modem-Dlink DIR 655 Router-(Ethernet)-Fon Router-Mac/Windows laptop Basically, is there a simple way to monitor the network and detect where issues are coming from? Right now we don't know if it is the Fon router, the Dlink router, the modem or the ISP. As the issue is intermittent, is there a software that regularly traceroutes a set of destinations and tests e.g. throughput, something that can help us figure out where in the chain the errors are introduced? The more automatic network monitor, the better.

• Site hanging in iis7 - how do I troubleshoot?

  I am currently having a problem with a windows 2008 server running IIS 7. The server runs several sites but only seems to have the issue with one particular site. Every so often, the whole server slows to a crawl with nearly all requests timing out! Invariably, when we log in to take a look there is always an IIS process using up around 90% cpu. Looking into the worker processes in IIS there are usually one or two requests that have been running for a long time. They are always in the ExecuteRequestHandler state with ManagedPipeline as the module name and the current ones i'm looking at have been running for 7686248 (what units is this in, it doesn't say?). It is also not always the same page, in fact we have seen at least 3 different pages listed under url when this has happened. It seems that the only way to bring the server back to life is to kill the 90% process! The site is running under .Net 4.0 and the code on it is very similar to other sites on the server which do not have the problem! How do I start troubleshooting this?

My personal GMail and Yahoo email addresses receive email from my server fine and do not produce errors. • Troubleshoot odd large transaction log backups...

  I have a SQL Server 2005 SP2 system with a single database that is 42gigs in size. It is a modestly active database that sees on average 25 transactions per second. The database is configured in Full recovery model and we perform transaction log backups every hour. However it seems to be pretty random at some point during the day the log backup will go from it's average size of 15megs all the way up to 40gigs. There are only 4 jobs that are scheduled to run on the SQL server and they are all typical backup jobs which occur on a daily/weekly basis. I'm not entirely sure of what client activity takes place as the application servers are maintained by a different department. Is there any good way to track down the cause of these log file growths and pinpoint them to a particular application, or client? Thanks in advance.

• Best way to troubleshoot intermittent network outages?

  We have a Comcast 50/10 line into our office. We keep seeing very short but sometimes frequent drops in our internet service. It's enough to kick you off of skype and stop any websites from loading, which is obviously affecting our productivity. We've tried 4 different routers, we've tried moving everyone off of wireless and onto wired via a switch and so far nothing has helped. Right now we're on a Cisco SB WRP400-G1 router. Attached to the router is a 16 port switch going to the ports in all of the offices. We've moved to OpenDNS in the case that it was the comcast DNS servers going down. Today we tried putting the modem, router, and switch on a UPS to make sure it wasn't power fluctuations that was causing it. Every time we call Comcast, by the time they are here the internet is working fine. I'd like to somehow prove that the problem is with Comcast, so if that means plugging in a machine directly into their router and collecting data all day, I'm up for that. I just want to hear ideas on what tools to run and how to collect this data. I could just continuously ping google.com all day long but I'm not sure how valuable that data would be. Thoughts?

  I have a Windows 7 and an XP machine connected to a NETGEAR wireless router. Both machines can log into the network and surf the web. Both are connecting wirelessly. I can ping the router from each machine and get a reply. I can ping each machine from the router and get a reply. But i cannot ping each machine from the other; getting a request time out. Subnet IP Addresses are 192.168.1.* Router =1; Win7 = 10; XP = 11; Firewall is currently off in both systems. Since i can ping from router im picking that not the problem anyway. If i try to ping from xp to win7 i get Request Timed Out. If i try to ping from Win7 to Xp i get destination host unreachable. What should i do now? Thanks

(installed ports /usr/ports/sysutils/rsyslog55 and /usr/ports/sysutils/rsyslog55-mysql) My rsyslog.conf file looks like: $ModLoad imudp $ModLoad imtcp $ModLoad ommysql $ModLoad immark.so $ModLoad imuxsock.so $ModLoad imklog.so $OptimizeForUniprocessor on $AllowedSender UDP, 10.0.0.0/8 $UDPServerAddress 0.0.0.0 $UDPServerRun 514 $UDPServerTimeRequery 2 # +SG560 *.* :ommysql:127.0.0.1,Syslog,sysloguser,mypassword My command line flags for rsyslogd are: -c5 -4 Checking the code with -c5 -N1 returns no errors. I have confirmed that rsyslogd is working by changing the last line to say: *.* /var/log/snapgear.log which results in messages appearing in the snapgear.log file. • Intermittent USB 3.0 access - How do I troubleshoot?

  I've got a WD Passport hard disk with "superspeed" USB 3.0 support. When I use my USB 3.0 flash drive (this is a Lenovo X220 laptop), USB 3.0 consistently works. But when I use the passport drive, almost without fail the connection drops to USB 2.0. Touching the cable seems to immediately trigger the problem, but it seems to happen on its own though. I've got another cable on order right now... but is it likely the cable's the issue here? Is there anything else I can check?
