• How best to troubleshoot a WIA issue through an IIS7 reverse proxy.

  I've got an Intranet site that uses Windows Authentication and is accessed through an IIS 7 Reverse Proxy. Using FireFox, Safari or Chrome it works fine. I'm prompted for credentials, I supply them and away I go. In IE 7/8 I get prompted for credentials but they're rejected and I eventually get a 401 not authorized error. The application server is configured for Windows Auth only and rejects basic authentication. I would be surprised if the front end proxy would accept Basic Auth so my suspicion is that it's a trust issue with my browser and IE isn't relaying the credentials however our IS Team has IE so locked down I'm unable to alter trust levels or even view the settings. How should I go about troubleshooting this problem? I'm at a loss and they've yet to respond to my support ticket.

  Our exchange server has suddenly stopped serving mobile devices. Attempts to connect result in our ActiveSync server returning HTTP 500. It is serving outlook clients fine. Our server is Windows 2003 SBS 6.5 SP2 There are no abnormal events in the system log. • How do I troubleshoot a segfault in Ubuntu that occurs when typing a bogus command?

  We've got a production server running Ubuntu 11.10. We're encountering segfaults that appear under various conditions. The simplest reproducible case is when we login to an ssh session as our administrative user and enter a bogus command. You'd expect the standard "command not found" error message. Instead, we get a segfault in python. The user's default shell is /bin/bash. • How to troubleshoot down terminal service/CITRIX sessions, when the process just won't terminate?

  Running a CITRIX presentation server farm, version 4.5.6 on Windows 2003 sp2. In the CITRIX Access Management Console, I sometimes get a session that shows it's in a down state - but has none of the normal info associated with it (user name, applications, client name, idle time, etc...). It does say which servers it's on, so I check out that server's terminal services manager. I can see the down session but cannot reset it. I get: (Error 7024 - the requested operation cannot be completed because the terminal connection is currently busy processing a connect, disconnect, reset, or delete operation.) So I go to the task manager and look up the processes running under that session id. I see it's one of my published apps, but when I try to end the process - it simply does nothing and the process remains. Any way to get rid of these sessions without a server reboot?

• How to troubleshoot a PHP script that causes a Segmenation Fault?

  I posted this on stackoverflow.com as well because I'm not sure if this is a programming problem or a server problem. I'm using ubuntu 9.10, apache2, mysql5 and php5. I've noticed an unusual problem with some of my php programs. Sometimes when visiting a page like profile.edit.php, the browser throws a dialogue box asking to download profile.edit.php page. When I download it, there's nothing in the file. profile.edit.php is supposed to be a web form that edits user information. I've noticed this on some of my other php pages as well. I look in my apache error logs, and I see a segmentation fault message: [Mon Mar 08 15:40:10 2010] [notice] child pid 480 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) And also, the issue may or may not appear depending on which server I deploy my application too. Additonal Details This doesn't happen all the time though. It only happens sometimes. For example, profile.edit.php will load properly. But as soon as I hit the save button (form action="profile.edit.php?save=true"), then the page asks me to download profile.edit.php. Could it be that sometimes my php scripts consume too much resources? Sample code Upon save action, my profile.edit.php includes a data_access_object.php file.   We have one user running OSX Snow Leopard who is having issues staying connected to our VPN running off of an ASA5510. His connection can die even as he's actively pushing traffic across it or if he's been idle for a period of time. • IIS6: How to troubleshoot a 404 error in an ASP.NET application?

  I have an ASP.NET application on a Windows Server 2003/IIS6 that refuses to run for some reason (it's the Xerox Centre, if that info helps). It has been working flawlessly before though on this server. Now, all I get if I try to open the app homepage (http://some.intranet.server/XeroxCentreWareWeb/) is a "404 - File or directory not found" error. The app is configured to run in it's own app pool, which runs as Network Service. The Network Service account has read access to the configured directory. If I stop the app pool, I get the expected "Service Unavailable" message, meaning the app and its pool are wired correctly I tried to track down any file permission issues with procmon - nothing to be seen. There isn't even an access to the web app directory happening when the page loads. Interestingly, according to procmon, the web server accesses the 401-2 custom error file (Logon failed due to server configuration) first, but then decides to send the 404 down to the client. EDIT: The app runs with Windows-integrated authentication. Regular users have access to the app directory as well (I would have noticed file system "ACCESS DENIED" messages in procmon, if there had been any.) This makes me think that there is some kind of weird permission problem that occurs even before the application files are being accessed. I just have no idea where to look. I've tried to run the app pool as Local System for a test, but to no avail. What else could I check in this case?

• My internet connection just got really slow - How can I troubleshoot it?

  A few days ago my connection became really slow. I have DSL which should be 3mb down and 768k up. I'm lucky if I get 768k down and 200k up. It sucks. I called my ISP, Verizon and they did some sort of line test and told me the problem was on my end. I rebooted my modem several times, like they told me. I'm not really sure why I even bothered calling them, the guy on the other end was just reading stuff out of a notebook - pretty useless. So, I checked my network traffic in windows resource monitor, and there doesn't seem to be anything there hogging the bandwidth. What else could be slowing my connection down on my PC? on my router? Something else?

• How do I troubleshoot a problem syncing Google contacts to an iPad?

  I use my MacBook Pro to sync content onto my wife's iPad. (She doesn't have a computer.) She doesn't want all my contacts from the Address Book app on my MBP. But she does want her Google contacts on her iPad. I've tried the following settings in iTunes: I created a group in my address book called "Claire's" (and put just a couple contacts in it), since if one enables "Sync Address Book Contacts" one either has to select "All" or at least one group. I've double-checked her email address in the dialog that comes up after pressing the "Configure" button. But after syncing, only the couple contacts in the "Claire's" group are in the Contacts app on her iPad. I've checked her Google contacts, and she has over 2000. For some reason they're not syncing. How do I find out why they're not? I looked to see if I could just use an app to do the sync on the iPad, but couldn't find one with good ratings. Do you have one to recommend so I can give up struggling with getting this working in iTunes?

• Java application crashes my computer. How do I troubleshoot?

  I am using NetBeans 4.1 for my university course (this is an older version, but is the required version for the course - I can't use a newer version). Whenever I use it for longer than several minutes, my computer crashes - it either reboots or I need to reset it. I have tried running with all startup items disabled (to rule out other applications interfering with the app), but it did no good. I have used Sysinternals procmon logging and the logs are corrupt - the only way I was able to get a good log was by enabling boot logging. However these are huge and I don't know what to look for. I am using Windows XP SP3, fully patched up and this is the only application that I have any kind of problem with. Can anyone suggest troubleshooting steps that will help me pinpoint the cause of these crashes and fix them?

• Dell 2950 Perc 6/i "physical disk" and "Enclosure(Backplane)" under Connector 1 in OMSA tree- Troubleshoot help

  Just looking for someone who might know why this could occur... In OMSA, on my Dell 2950, there usually is only one "Physical Disks" child under "Enclosure (Backplane)" in the tree view. Currently, the tree looks like this: Dell PERC 6/i Integrated Connector 1 (RAID) Enclosure (Backplane) Physical Disks (1:04 good, 1:05 removed) Physical Disks (1:33 Ready but unused) Normally it's like this: Connector 1 (RAID) Enclosure (Backplane) Physical Disks (1:04 good, 1:05 good) From the front, 6 of 6 3.5" SAS drives are connected. The server is showing Slot 5 as bad and the disk as removed. It seems that the drive in Slot 5 is being sensed as external to the Enclosure. Any ideas why this would happen? Think I can get away with rebuilding the virtual disk by replacing 1:05 with 1:33? Thanks.

  I am looking for hints, tips and answers on how to get started on troubleshooting when: The problem is intermittent The problem could lie literally anywhere - operating system; free source software; my own software developments; purchased software; crumbs on the keyboard; the specific combination of software I am currently running; Maxwell's demon; the little blue men actually running the machine have gone on strike; etc. I have expertise only in a few of the areas that are potential candidates for the cause of the problem. The specific problem I am having is detailed below as an example, but I am not seeking answers to my current problem, but rather where and how to start on tackling such problems. I am currently encountering a problem with my new machine. On a few occasions the machine has just frozen; not accepting keystrokes, mouseclicks, or anything except the power on/off switch. Invariably I have been merely browsing the web; I have had a few (<= 6 other applications) running. None of these applications are major; and represent a mix of commercial programs and open source programs, typically migrated from Unix of some variety. My machine is a Windows 7 I7 quad core laptop.

• How to troubleshoot a remote wmi query/access failure?

  I'm using Powershell to query a remote computer in a domain for a wmi object, eg: "gwmi -computer test -class win32_bios". I get this error message: Value does not fall within the expected range Executing the query local under the same user works fine. It seems to happen on both windows 2003 and also 2008 systems. The user that runs the shell has admin rights on the local and remote server. I checked wmi and dcom permissions as far as I know how to do this, they seem to be the same on a server where it works, and another where it does not. I think it is not a network issue, all ports are open that are needed, and it also happens within the same subnet. When sniffing the traffic we see the following errors: RPC: c/o Alter Cont Resp: Call=0x2 Assoc Grp=0x4E4E Xmit=0x16D0 Recv=0x16D0 Warning: GssAPIMechanism is not found, either caused by not reassembled, conversation off or filtering. And an errormessage from Kerberos: Kerberos: KRB_ERROR - KDC_ERR_BADOPTION (13) The option code in the packet is 0x40830000 Any idea what I should look into?

• How do I troubleshoot CanoScan LIDE20 on Ubuntu 9.10 in VirtualBox?

  This may be a VirtualBox question more than anything else. The host OS is Win7, which sees the scanner, but has no drivers for it. VirtualBox sees & recognizes the scanner as "Cannon Scan" and shows "state captured" when I hover over USB devices. Searching gives me many happy reports of this particular scanner being well supported, and that SANE should work with it immediately (also listedin the Supported Hardware List. I get "no devices available" from XSane... and I'm not sure where else I can check. I'd like to see if VirtualBox is telling the truth and find out if the USB port is actually being fed into the virtual OS. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where/how to do that in Ubuntu? Or other bright ideas. I'm starting with a little project to add some zing to my beginner linux studies - I'm sure I haven't checked some obvious things, because I don't know them yet. ;)

• How do I troubleshoot an IPsec tunnel (from a cellular router to a public server)?

  I'm new to IPsec and struggling with a setup that might soon be widely used in our operations (provided I do understand it, eventually...). A cellular router (blackbox by netModule, from its log messages it seems to be running Linux and OpenSwan) connects a sensor network on customers' sites with our public server. We need to be able to connect into the local network, so I had the cell provider give me a public IP (a dynamic one). The way their setup works, the public IPs only allow IPsec traffic. I set up OpenSwan on our Ubuntu server (running Jaunty). This is my connection config from /etc/ipsec.conf: conn gprs-field-devices left=my.pub.lic.ip [email protected] #leftsubnet=192.168.1.129/25 right=%any [email protected] #rightsubnet=192.168.1.1/25 #rightnexthop=%defaultroute auto=add On the router, all I have is the Web UI, in which I made the following settings: "Remote endpoint": public IP of server, same as "left" above "Local Network Address": 192.168.1.1 "Local Network Mask": 255.255.255.128 "Remote Network Address": 192.168.1.129 "Remote Network Mask": 255.255.255.128 The pluto process on the server is listening for connections on port 500. It can't open a tunnel, obviously, because it doesn't know at which IP the client is. I set up a passphrase as PSK for @field.econemon.com in /etc/ipsec.secrets and also configured it in the router (which doesn't seem to support certificates). My problem is, nothing happens. The router just says, IPsec is "down". When I copy-paste the IP into ipsec.conf (for "right="), and ask the server to ipsec auto --up gprs-field-devices, it just hangs until I press Ctrl-C. Is there anything wrong with my setup? How can I debug this further? • My internet drops and will only reconnect if I troubleshoot it or restart my computer.

  My internet loses its connection and at the same time, and my speaker seems broken if that happens and my mouse will not be smooth as it was before it happens. It already happened before and I didnt mind it. But now, it's happening literally all the time. After startup, my connection seems okay but after some few minutes, even without me doing something, my laptop will just lose its connection. It says that it is not connected and connections are available, but if I check if there are connections where I can connect it shows nothing. Even if, there is actually a wi-fi connection where my phone and other laptops connect. They dont seem to have problem with it. Just my laptop. After that happens, I usually restart my laptop but I discovered that troubleshooting it would somehow repair the problem, but not all the time. It says that restarting my wireless adapter do the job. Are there any long term fix? I mean that could last long or totally erase the problem? I have Atheros AR5B97 Wireless Network Adapter and Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, both enabled. On the services, I have Wired AutoConfig and WLAN AutoConfig on Automatic. Aspire 4750, Windows 7 (x86)

• What should be monitored to troubleshoot file sharing problems?

  I'm running into some problems with a file share used by an ASP.NET web application. With this configuration, there are 2 web servers (win2k8 web) that connect to a file server (win2k8 enterprise), reading and writing files using a file share. Recently, one of the web servers has begun encountering an error accessing the file share: IOException: The specified network name is no longer available. There does not appear to be much info on the web for explaining what's causing this and how to best fix it, so I'm looking at what I can monitor in order to get clues. I'm not sure if it's hardware, just a load issue, file size, frequency, etc. With Windows perfmon, what can I monitor on the File Server side? There's the "Files Open" object, any other good ones? What can I monitor on the web server side? EDIT: I'll add that the UNC path uses the IP address of the file server, not a name to resolve. Also the share is a single, flat directory with over 100K files.

• Terrible Performance with SATA Drives on Dell PowerEdge, steps to troubleshoot?

  I had asked this question earlier and the question went missing so here it is again. Bought a DELL Poweredge 2950 to use as in-house QA Server. Disk performance is beyond terrible, 1000-4000 ms response time on the drive with our SQL Server database .mdf. Sql Server disk queue upwards of 300 at times. I'm a software guy, can anyone help me with steps to determine the issue? I don't know what RAID controller it has, how can I determine that? I'm speculating it could be BIOS issue. Perhaps the server used to have another kind of drive in it and when I added SATA the ??? buffer size is wrong??? Perhaps I chose wrong options (chose defaults) when setting up the RAID 1 arrays? I thought RAID 1 was a performance array?

In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of CLTE_C_08.zip or CLTE_C_08.zip.zip, and cannot find CLTE_C_08.zip.ZIP, period. After some googling, some people say that this error is because the file is too big, others say because file is corrupt, others say that it could be a not unix archive. So my question , how to find out if file is valid archive file on my Centos and what is the command/trick to uncompress big files ( if any ) Thanks in advance :)

• How should I troubleshoot a problematic wireless connection on Linux?

  I recently purchased a netgear 150 usb wireless dongle for use with my 11.10 Xubuntu amd64 system. Using the network-manager interface, I can see local wireless networks and enter the authentication details for my local wireless lan. Unfortunately, the connection does not seem to work, I keep getting notifications that my wireless has disconnected (but none indicating that I've connected). When I examine syslog, it seems to indicate that I've successfully associated with the wireless switch and that dhcp has successfully acquired an ip address but the log shows that the dhcp process keeps sending requests, eventually dropping the connection. 'ifconfig wlan0' never shows the dhcp address logged in syslog. I suspect that the problem lies with the usb dongle, my configuration or the wireless switch but I am not certain how to isolate the problem, can anyone provide some insight on how I should go about homing in on the cause of this problem or verifying the functionality of the individual components, thanks.

• How can I troubleshoot SSD disconnection problems on Windows 7?

  I have a small SSD (Transcend StoreJet TS256GESD200K) which I am using on several computers. The drive is formatted with NTFS and recently I started noticing disconnects. Normally one probably wouldn't notice (you don't even get the notification sound in Windows when it disconnects), but since I use USBDLM and run a VM from that SSD, I get to see this first-hand. How could I best figure out whether the problem is the hardware (SSD, USB socket, USB cable or something in the PC) or software? In short: how can I locate the source of the disruption so that I can work on removing the problem? Side-note: SMART status for the SSD is clean.

  I have downloaded the [IIS Diagnostics Toolkit (x86)][1] [1]: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=9bfa49bc-376b-4a54-95aa-73c9156706e7&displaylang=en and I was wondering how to use it. I'm not a system admin just a developer trying to work my way around a strange problem. I have an iis server running php(not my choice) and every once in a while the application will not allow anyone to log in and then a little while later it just starts working again. I look in the event viewer and don't see anything and the iis logs are no help either. I read somewhere about someone using the the toolkit to diagnose there problem. I just need a little guidance on how to use this tool. Thanks.

  Finally decided to move from Subversion to Git, but am having problems with my first project. Did my "git init" and am trying to do a "git add" of my project, but it's failing with: $ git add . error: unable to set permission to '.git/objects/6b/6018c1c76dc5ec159d5cb65bab72 fa300d52f6' error: build.xml: failed to insert into database error: unable to index file build.xml fatal: adding files failed I have full permissions to the directories in question. The only odd thing about it is that it's a drive mounted (and mapped) from a server over CIFS. No problems creating/editing files/permissions with other applications. The host is Windows Vista x64 and I'm running git under Cygwin. Server is Windows 2008. Any other ideas on what I might be doing wrong?
