I need to run Firefox but it seems like a lot of my clients are still running versions of Firefox 3 (is this an operating system issue? Doesn't Firefox auto-update?) so I need to run 3 plus the latest version to troubleshoot some css issues...

    I am building a flight simulator box, off of Ubuntu 12.10, but I am trying to make the OS essentially invisible, I just want the machine to boot into the Flight Sim, which, that part isn't really that difficult, just a matter of adding a startup item, but I would like to make it a bit more seemless, and in-addtion to that, I would like maybe a 3-5 second countdown where you could opt-out of the flight sim from starting, if you need to troubleshoot the OS, or the flight sim itself, and I have no idea how that would be accomplished

As such, I don't always have domain name resolution and this service needs to work even if queried by its IP address.     The article Refresh and reset your PC mentions exactly what happens during the refresh and reset operations in Windows 8: Refresh The PC boots into Windows RE. Windows RE scans the hard drive for your data, settings, and apps, and puts them aside (on the same drive). Windows RE installs a fresh copy of Windows. Windows RE restores the data, settings, and apps it has set aside into the newly installed copy of Windows. The PC restarts into the newly installed copy of Windows. Reset The PC boots into the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE). Windows RE erases and formats the hard drive partitions on which Windows and personal data reside. Windows RE installs a fresh copy of Windows. The PC restarts into the newly installed copy of Windows. It is my understanding that Windows RE (Recovery Environment) is included as part of the System Reserved partition created by default on the first hard disk. The size of this partition has gone up to 350 MB from the 100 MB it used to be in Vista/Windows 7, no doubt as a result of adding these features. Now we have already discussed how to skip the creation of this System Reserved partition during Setup. Basically, the same techniques that used to work with Windows 7 work with Windows 8 as well. What I want to know is, what will be the exact repercussions of not having the System Reserved partition in place? I assume Troubleshoot / Advanced options should still be available as before: But what about the Troubleshoot menu itself? Will the Refresh and Reset options disappear? Will they remain but be unavailable? Or possibly they will throw an error if selected? Also, will it be possible to access and successfully execute these options if installation media is available? Anything else that might be affected?

  • 2000 Server, User can't logon

    I hope you can help me. I recently upgraded a workstation at my office (to a whole new machine) and ran into a pretty serious problem. Friday until 5:00 PM, I could access my mail on 2000 Exchange server. When I shut the old workstation down and put in the new workstation, I tried to set up an account. When I put the server name in appropriate field and typed my username and hit check names, my username does not come up. So to troubleshoot, (It also is a SMB server) I try to logon to my file share. (My local credentials are the same as server credientials of user account) When I try to logon to share, I just get the Username/Password screen (Never had gotten that before since credentials are the same) Again, in troubleshooting mode, I try to log on to my user from another workstation. Still can't authenticate via my user. Every other user can authenticate and load up their shares/mailboxes. I have restored Exchange from the backup as of 3 days ago (Thursday) but the exact same issue is still there. I really do not understand what is wrong and what else I can do to troubleshoot. If anyone has some pointers for me, I will surely accept them. Thanks, Mike

    Is there a way to forever disable driver signature enforcement in Windows 8? I keep seeing this solution posted on various blogs and forums: bcdedit -set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON but it is not working, at least not like when you manually disable driver signature enforcement. To disable driver signature enforcement, I currently have to do this everytime I restart my PC: 1. From the Metro Start Screen, open Settings (move your mouse to the bottom-right-corner of the screen and wait for the pop-out bar to appear, then click the Gear icon). 2. Click ‘More PC Settings’. 3. Click ‘General’. 4. Scroll down, and click ‘Restart now’ under ‘Advanced startup’. 5. Click ‘Troubleshoot’. 6. Click ‘Advanced Options’ 7. Click ‘Windows Startup Settings’ 8. Click Restart. Is there at least a way to create a shortcut or something? F8, Shift+F8 don't work any more at boot. These MS developers freaks really want everything their way only. What's worse is that when I have to power up my PC, I first have to start normally and then restart with driver signature enforcement disabled, because there is no way to tell Windows 8 to show the troubleshoot screen when a PC is powered up.

    I have a 16 GB iPad wifi I can't get to connect to VPN. The error I get is: "A connection could not be established to the PP server. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator." I have tried a variety of tasks to troubleshoot the issue: I have verified that another iPad on another network can connect to the VPN I am trying to connect to I can connect to this VPN from the same network the iPad uses on a Windows machine I have verified an iPhone user can connect to this VPN from a different network I have reset the iPad's network settings I have reset the entire iPad and restored settings I have compared my settings w/ a screenshot from the iPad that works and confirmed everything is correct I have used the IP address and domain name of our VPN server in the settings I have tried deleting the VPN settings in the iPad and recreating them I have verified in the logs of VPN server that I'm not even getting to the VPN server (no log entry) I have verified that I cannot VPN from the iPad on separate network (different ISP and router) Are there any other ways to troubleshoot VPN on an iPad?

  • How can I get Windows to apply its settings?

    I have a computer with a major problem; it gives a blue screen when the login screen loads. I've been using this guide to troubleshoot the issue, and now I've run into a problem. I have determined the issue is not bad memory or a bad hard drive. According to the guide, this means the problem is in the OS. I've tried to follow the steps, but Windows (Vista SP1) somehow doesn't remember any changes. On every reboot, the computer is in exactly the same state it was in before. Any changes to system settings or files won't be recorded. As this means I can't check what is causing the problem, I can't fix my PC. Is there a way to find out what's causing this? Is it just a mode Windows goes into to protect itself, or is it some other problem? Anything to help troubleshoot will be of great help here. PS. I'm kind of new to this site. If I messed up, please tell me in the comments.

    I'm trying to use Powershell DSC's Package resource to install an exe... Perforce's P4V to be specific. Here's my code: Configuration PerforceMachine { Node "SERVERNAME" { Package P4V { Ensure = "Present" Name = "Perforce Visual Components" Path = "\\nas\share\p4vinst64.exe" ProductId = '' Arguments = "/S /V/qn" # args for silent mode LogPath = "$env:ProgramData\p4v_install.log" } } } When running this, this is the error Powershell gives me: PowerShell provider MSFT_PackageResource failed to execute Set-TargetResource functionality with error message: The return code 1619 was not expected. Configuration is likely not correct + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (:) [], CimException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : ProviderOperationExecutionFailure + PSComputerName : SERVERNAME According to documentation, return code 1619 means the MSI package couldn't be opened. However, when I manually log in to the machine and run "\\nas\share\p4vinst64.exe /S /V/qn", the install works flawlessly. Does anyone know why this is failing? Alternately, can anyone tell me how to troubleshoot this? I pasted all the error information I got from the terminal, my log file (p4v_install.log) is a 0 byte file, and there are no events in the event viewer. I don't know how to troubleshoot it any further! EDIT: I should note that I also tried using the File resource to copy the file locally, and then install it from there. Sadly, that met with the same result.

  • Site-to-site VPN using MD5 instead of SHA and getting regular disconnection

    We are experiencing some strange behavior with a site-to-site IPsec VPN that goes down about every week for 30 minutes (Iam told 30 minutes exactly). I don't have access to the logs, so it's difficult to troubleshoot. What is also strange is that the two VPN devices are set to use SHA hash algorithm but apparently end up agreeing to use MD5. Does anybody have a clue? or is this just insufficient information?

  • Can't SSH into Linux server

    I have access to a Ubuntu Server (10.4) that I can't SSH into. From a terminal the connection times out and from putty the connection is refused. I have checked that sshd is running and listening on all interfaces, iptables has all chains empty and default is ACCEPT, additional firewall is accepting on port 22 inbound, and all outbound. I can't telnet into port 22 either. What could the problem be and how can I troubleshoot it?

    Here's what cap deploy does: sudo -p 'sudo password: ' -u root /var/rails_apps/fooapp/current/script/process/reaper reaper simply contains /etc/init.d/nginx restart When I run the same command from the shell, I do not get a 502--everything is fine.
