• Server Configuration / Important Parameter for 500Req/Second

  I am configuring a server to be used as nginx server for a very heavy traffic website. It is expected to receive traffic from a large number of IP addresses simultaneously. It is expected to get 500Req/Second with atleast 20Million unique IPs connecting it. One of the problems I noticed in my previos server was related to iptables / ipconntrack. I am not aware of this behaviour and would be glad to know which all parameters of a ubuntu / debian (32/64) bit machine should I tweek to get maximum performance from the server. I can put in a lot of RAM on the server but mission critical task is the response times. We ideally dont want any connection to be hanging / timing out / waiting and want as low as possible overall response times. P.S. We are also looking for a kick ass freelancer system admin who can help us figuring / setting this all up. • IIS7 authentication

  To give our user's the ability to protect content on their IIS6 sites we used a tool called IISPassword which emulates .htaccess to provide Basic authentication. There isn't support for IISPassword on IIS7 at the moment. Is there an equivalent mechanism I can use built into IIS7 instead? I'm well aware of ASP.NET Forms Authentication, but I need a way for users deploying non-ASP.NET content (such as PHP, Perl, images etc) to be able to use Basic authentication but not have to write code to achieve this. Is this possible?

• Looking for application performance tracking software

  I have multiple java-based applications which produce statistics on how long method calls take. Right now the information is being written into a log file and I analyse performance that way. However with multiple apps and more monitoring requirements this is being becoming a bit overwhelming. I am looking for an application which will collect stats and graph them so I can analyse performance and be aware of performance degradation. I have looked at Solarwinds Application Performance Monitoring, however this polls periodically to gather information. My applications are totally event based and we would like to graph and track this accordingly. I almost started hacking together some scripts to produce Google Charts but surely there are applications which do this already. Suggestions?

• How to prove that an email has been sent?

  I have a dispute on my hands in which the other party (landlord's real estate agent) dishonestly claims to not have received an email that I truly did send. My questions is, what are the ways to prove that the email was indeed sent? Thus far, the methods that I have already thought of are: Screenshot of the mail in the outbox Forwarding a copy of the original email I am aware of other things like HTTP/ SMTP headers etc that would exist as well. Are these useful for my purposes, and if so how do I extract these? The email in question was sent using Yahoo webmail ( http://au.mail.yahoo.com/ ). Edit: I am not seeking legal advice here, just technical advice as to how to gather this information.

• Turning a log file into a sort of circular buffer

  Folks, is there a *nix solution which would make the log file act as a circular buffer? For example, I'd like log files to store maximum 1Gb of data and discard the older entries once the limit is reached. Is it possible at all? I believe in order to achieve that a log file should be turned into some sort of special device... P.S. I'm aware of misc logrotating tools but this is not what I need. Logrotating requires lots of IO, happens usually once a day while I need a "runtime" solution.

• How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

  I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

  I'm having a problem similar to that posted in this question: Missing Certificate template From certificate to issue The short version is that I've created a duplicate certificate template and I'm trying to add it to my domain CA so that I can issue certificates with it. However, when I go into the Certification Authority MMC and go to "Certificate Templates - New - Certificate Template To Issue", my template is missing (along with quite a number of other templates that are present in the domain). Unlike the previous question, however, my CA is running on Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Our organization has a single DC and a single CA, so I'm not seeing where there could be propagation delay. Any ideas how to get my template to show so that I can issue certificates?

• Windows 7 64bit keyboard issues

  I have a Pavilion dv4 notebook running Windows 7 64bit Enterprise edition. This morning I started to notice some really strange behavior in how it handled its built-in keyboard. At random intervals there will be a long delay in key presses, to which some keys will never show and other keys will continue to repeat until you hit the backspace. Other keys get mapped incorrectly to other keys. If I hook up an external keyboard the problem does not appear. Before I reformat the machine and do a fresh install, I thought I would check here to see if anyone has experienced this same issue and if so, how did you fix it?

• How to enable mysqli extension on redhat?

  My php.ini says: Additional .ini files parsed /etc/php53/php.d/curl.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/fileinfo.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/json.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/mysqli.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/mysql.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/pdo_mysql.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/phar.ini, /etc/php53/php.d/zip.ini mysqli.ini is loaded.. But still i get this, PHP Fatal error: Class 'mysqli' not found i tried enabling dynamic loading and initialize php scripts with dl("mysqli.so"); i also tried recompiling the php source: ./configure --with-mysql=/usr/lib64/mysql --with- mysqli=/usr/lib64/mysql/mysql_config even this didn't work. Can anybody help me solve my problem? Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (Tikanga). x86_64 GNU/Linux. No access to RHN. Thanks.

• Exchange 2010 - No Push notification when when deleting emails from Outlook

  Hi I'm setting up a Exchange 2010 server for our test environment. I'm running Windows 2008R2 enterprise on this machine. Iv'e also installed all updates available for windows and exchange 2010 including rollup 1 and 2 for exchange that include bugfixes regarding push notifications. My problem is when deleting mail or marking mail as read don't trigger a push notification. The happens when I use webgui, mobile phone and Outlook 2007. When deleting a email in Outlook 2007 the changes get sent to the server since the changes are visible in webgui but not on mobile phone. I get push notifications when I get new emails since new emails appear instantly on the mobile phone. Is this normal behaviour on Exchange 2010? For me it seems a bit funny. If i force sync on mobile phone the changes appear. Iv'e tested this on both iphone and HTC HD2(Running Windows Mobile 6.5) with same results.

  I'm having a weird problem here. I upgraded a Windows XP computer from IE6 to IE8 yesterday and everything seemed to work normally until today. Now I can't open any browser on this computer. The computer had Google Chrome installed and it suddenly disappeared, I installed it again and now it dowsn't open either. I also installed Firefox and the same thing happened. The computer had no anti virus, I installed Ad-Aware, run a full scan and it detected some malware, but browsers are still not working Any ideas?

  I have been a fulltime student recently working on graduate work to complete a graduate degree. While continuing my studies I have maintained my computer hobby. However, recently my computer hobby has been threatening to turn into a full-fledged side business. Because I am starting to have people come to me for computer help who I have never met before (who generally heard word-of-mouth from other people whose computers I looked at) I am seriously considering putting my conditions for working on a computer into writing (for potential damage control and perhaps liability reasons). Are there any standards for this that I should reference? Should responsibility be waived for times when the computer is left in my care or any time I look at a machine? Any advice you can provide here would be appreciated. What other lessons have you learned that I should be aware of in relation to helping people while continuing my studies as a hobby? • Windows 7: Can't see ISO file in C:\

  I used DVD shrink to create an ISO file and saved it into C:\ The ISO file is visible with some programs but not with others. The file is not hidden as far as I am aware. But it cannot be seen by Windows Explorer, DVD Decrypter or a bunch of other programs. If I search for the file using Windows 7's Start Menu search tool, I can see the file and I can right click and select Properties. The Properties window appears OK, but if I try to change tabs on the property window, I receive an error message as though the file is not there. DVD Shrink can still open the file OK. I can also find the file using Agent Ransack (a file searching tool), but then I cannot open it. What gives?

• Fedora12, XP and connection sharing via iptables

  Just a quick question ( I Hope ) To find out if what I'm trying is even possible. I am trying to share internet connection with Fedora12 as default gateway and XP machine hooked up via NIC using iptables commands as shown in Mark Sobell's book 'A Practical Guide To Fedora And Red Hat Enterprise Linux' These are the commands as placed in /etc/rc.local iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -o eth0 -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -o eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -j LOG iptables -t NAT -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE I did flip the in and out parameters to match my NIC configuration ( as opposed to example from book ) but other than that followed example. One thing to note is that Sobell did not mention whether this should work with mix of Linux and XP. One other note ( maybe meaningless ) is that I do have samba working between the two machines. • MySQL dump, output each table row on a new line whilst using --extended-insert

  I'm having an issue, where for ease of use, I'd like to be able to format a command line MySQL dump so that each row of a given table is on a new line when using the --extended-insert option. Usually when using --extended-insert, every row of a given table is outputted on one line, and as far as I am aware there's no way to change this, other than post-processing the dump with perl or such like. The format I'm looking for is: -- -- Dumping data for table `ww_tbCountry` -- INSERT INTO `ww_tbCountry` (`iCountryId_PK`, `vCountryName`, `vShortName`, `iSortFlag`, `fTax`, `vCountryCode`, `vSageTaxCode`) VALUES (22, 'Albania', 'AL', 1, 0.00, '8', 'T9'), (33, 'Austria', 'AT', 1, 15.00, '40', 'T9'), (40, 'Belarus', 'BY', 1, 0.00, '112', 'T9'), (41, 'Belgium', 'BE', 1, 15.00, '56', 'T9'), (51, 'Bulgaria', 'BG', 1, 15.00, '100', 'T9' However, when I dump a database using Phpmyadmin, using --extended-insert, each row is dumped on a new line (as shown by the example above). • SuSE always logs a user in TVM session

  Hello all, I recently installed Suse Linux enterprise Desktop 11 on my box. I created an user and logged in first time into a GNOME session without any problems. Last time I logged in I selected the session as TWM and that got me into the T windows manager just fine. Now when I log out and try to log back into a GNOME session, it will still log me into the TVM session. I have tried restarting the box but that has not helped. However, when I remote log in to the machine it will let me got on the GNOME session just fine. I'm guessing this is probably a really simple fix, however I am a Linux newbie and doing a google search isn't yielding me what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance for your help, Rohan

Now when I log out and try to log back into a GNOME session, it will still log me into the TVM session. I have tried restarting the box but that has not helped. Though when I remote log in to the machine it will let me get on the GNOME session just fine. I'm guessing this is probably a really simple fix, however I am a Linux newbie and doing a google search isn't yielding me what I'm looking for. • ClearOS - how to avoid getting stuck at a fsck message at boot?

  I have had this happen a couple times - I have a ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 box, and due to a power outage or similar, it ends up showing an error at boot and saying that fsck needs to be run (I think it said with (or without?) the -a parameter). The problem is, I need this box to be headless, at a remote location (miles away)! SO, I need to come up with a solution on how to either have it automatically repair itself, without someone to be present with a monitor and keyboard. Another possibility is to simply avoid the issue all together - maybe there is something that can be changed so it's very unlikely to happen (I am unable to avoid the power outage of course - at least not practically). Finally, maybe it can be boot off a read only media (cd) or file system or similar? At least the base OS, so that it would always at least boot with enough configuration that might allow remote access, or basic connectivity?

• Can I provision half a core as a virtual CPU?

  I am virtualization newbie. Please advise on these questions. Please note using a commercial VM software like Citrix or VMware is not a choice for me. I have at my disposal a couple of 2x 4 core servers with 32 GB RAM. I need to create 16 VMs on each server to test some web applications. Can I provision half a core as a virtual CPU for each VM? To my best knowledge I can't do so on Xen. Is it possible on KVM or some other free open source VM solution? If it's not possible to assign half a core, how do I ensure that uniform processing power is available for all VMs? Since the job is to create separate instances for hosting 16 web apps in a physical server, do you recommend setting up a private cloud using Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud as a better option? Is there HA solution under KVM, like Remus for Xen?

After that, i've upgraded my hdd. With help of clonezilla i've copied the old disk to the new disk. Next step was to copy the vhd to another partition. Then i updated the boot menu. However, the step C:\>bcdedit /set {guid} device vhd=[driveletter:]\<directory>\<vhd filename> fails with the message An error has occurred setting the element data. The request is not supported. what is happening?

• How to modify PATH variable for X11 during log-in?

Decided to revise my question, based on what I learned there: Essentially, my problem is that I am working on some lab computers (read: no administrative rights) that, if I log in, I need to change the PATH variable as X11 starts. The reason is that I need to change the PATH variable at this time, as opposed to later, is that the Print Screen command seems to "bind" during login (forgive my bad explanation of this). You can see in the work-around I listed in the previous question, that I can make it work by starting a new X, but I was wondering if it is possible to change upon login. If this seems a poor explanation, you can check out the original link for my context and reasoning behind what I'm doing. Any ideas?
