  Like most companies, aerospace giant Boeing has its jargon - words and phrases that uniquely define its products and processes. Take the word platform. It is used at Boeing to mean a family of aircraft - the F/A-18 fighter, for example, or the 777 jetliner. Boeing Defense, Space & Security since August 2009, employees in the Global Services & Support (GS&S) division of Boeing Defense, Space & Security have been talking about a different sort of platform: a supply chain technology platform, based on Oracle Business Process Management (Oracle BPM) solutions and Oracle SOA Suite. That platform, built with the assistance of Oracle Diamond Partner Capgemini, is serving as a jumping-off point for Boeing's GS&S staff to deploy radically improved business processes supported by Oracle Fusion Applications to build a high-visibility, end-to-end supply chain. • Oracle Developer Day, Poland, 2012

  Oracle Developer Day took place in Poland today. Oracle's Gregor Rayman did the keynote, where NetBeans was positioned, yet again, as Oracle's IDE for the Java Platform, via the JavaFX Roadmap: Well, it's not so clear from my pic above, but NetBeans is closely tied to the JavaFX Roadmap, as well as the JDK Roadmap too. Then the tracks started, one of which was the Java Track (the other two tracks were on ADF/WebLogic and SOA/BPM/BAM), where among other things I demonstrated the Java EE 6 Platform via tools in NetBeans IDE at some length. The room could hardly have been fuller, chairs had to be brought in and people were standing along the walls. The above pic shows the session being set up, with the room full of developers ready to hear about Java EE 6. I also did a session on pluggable Java desktop development (i.e., NetBeans Platform) and on "What's New in NetBeans IDE 7.1?", while Martin Grebac had a session on Java EE Web Services. Some of the many questions asked during the day that I thought were interesting: Is there localization support for the @Pattern annotation? I.e., what if I want to display the error message in Polish, what do I do? Is there filtering/sorting support for the DataTable component in JSF? Why is there no visual editor for ejb-jar.xml, in the same way that there is for web.xml? "Would be handy if there were to be a JSR for IDE Keyboard Shortcuts." (Two different people asked this question, separately, without knowing about each other. The second didn't know about the Eclipse and IntelliJ keyboard shortcut support in NetBeans IDE and was happy when I told them about it.) Wouldn't it be cool if, on start up, or during installation, there'd be a question: "Are you migrating from Eclipse/IntelliJ?" Then, if "yes", reset the keyboard shortcuts to match the IDE they're coming from.Is there a way in NetBeans to find subclasses of a class? "Would be cool if HTML or JSF files could be visualized in the same way as JavaFX and Swing classes." I.e., Visual Debugger for web developers. I had a great day and am looking at the Oracle Developer Day that will be held in Cluj, Romania, on Friday.

• Which Java web framework do you recommend for intranet webapp (not content website)?

  I'm about to start development of small purpose build intranet web application for small software vendor. It will be administration console of the server managing licenses for off-the-shelf software installed by users. There will be a few users who need to be able to sign in, issue a batch of license codes, revoke some, renew outdated, resolve issues, etc. Bear in mind that my customer requires Java for this solution. I'm seasoned Java programmer and before I used different frameworks to implement webapps, mainly Apache Struts in the past and Spring MVC recently. I was wondering what else could you recommend for such specific intranet webapp. I looked at using Google Web Toolkit (possibly with SmartGWT) Ext JS for fancy widgets in UI and REST back-end in SpringMVC SpringMVC with JQueryUI Could you please think of any piece of recommendation with regard to the choice I'm going to made?

• Java Certification Exams and Their Move to Pearson VUE

  You may be aware that Oracle recently migrated all Sun-branded certification exams from Prometric to Pearson VUE. Below are answers to some frequently-asked questions that we've been getting recently: What changes to the exams should I be aware of?Only minor changes were made to the exams during the transition to Pearson VUE: Renumbering of all exams to the Oracle exam numbering structure (i.e. 1Z0...). Most exam score reports were enhanced to provide more detailed feedback. Score reports now list every exam objective for which a question (or questions) were answered incorrectly. The previous format provided only section-level performance feedback. For three Java exams, some lengthy (time-consuming) questions were removed & replaced with shorter (less time-consuming) questions. This was done in order to shorten the required exam time (to 150 minutes). Some interactive question types were removed from several Java and Solaris exams (including "matching" and "drag-and-drop" questions). The passing scores (for the exams that were revised) were statistically adjusted to make them equal to their prior passing scores, thus ensuring that the exams maintained the same level of difficulty as before. The exam objectives and the exam questions themselves did not change. Candidates should study the same material and objectives. Are there also new testing practices I should be aware of?Oracle follows a common industry practice of placing occasional un-scored questions on our certification exams. Candidates will not know which questions are unscored. At the time of this blog post, only one of the migrated exams (1Z0-898) contains unscored questions.I started the Master certification path through Prometric, and now I need to complete the requirements through Pearson VUE.   I am importing a dmp file using the following command: imp user/pass file=file.dmp log=logfile.log full=y ignore=y destroy=y I get the following errors: . . importing table "MESSAGE_BOARD" IMP-00058: ORACLE error 22993 encountered ORA-22993: specified input amount is greater than actual source amount IMP-00028: partial import of previous table rolled back: 219638 rows rolled back . . importing table "MESSAGE_BOARD_ARCHIVES" IMP-00058: ORACLE error 22993 encountered ORA-22993: specified input amount is greater than actual source amount IMP-00028: partial import of previous table rolled back: 2477960 rows rolled back I have tried increasing the tablespace size and adding a second datafile to no avail. I'm a total newb at Oracle so any help will be appreciated. Googled this for hours and still can't come up with a solution. Thanks!

• Do I really need to "learn" C# for XNA if I know Java?

  so I want to start developing in XNA. As of now, I do not know C#, but I would consider myself "good" at Java. I have looked at some C# code and it looks almost IDENTICAL to Java... After looking at this, http://www.harding.edu/fmccown/java_csharp_comparison.html it looks like they are basically the same. Obviously some function names are going to be different, but I think I can handle it. Now if I want to learn game development in XNA, do I really need to "learn" and master C#, or can I just jump right in and learn along the way? I should also mention, I also know PHP which looks very similar...

• ORA-1034 Oracle Not Found

  I have recently installed oracle 11g on Windows 7 Home Premium Operating System. I logged in as administrator into windows. I am trying to create a database using DBCA wizard. I started the wizard as administrator. Everything goes fine until last step. However when creating the database the creation fails with ORA-01034 Oracle Not Available error. All my oracle services looks up and running. I consulted the documentation and forums. I have got no clue why I am running into the error.

• Oracle Hangs on Responses Intermittently

  I want to preface this with the fact that I am a developer and I am not even close to a DBA, plus I am new to Oracle. OK, here it goes: I have a Java application which uses spring and hibernate. Its a simple CRUD app and I will leave the details out as I don't think they are the issue. I have noticed that my app runs fine when I use MySql, but when I use an Oracle 10.2 server every 7th-10th hangs for 5-10 seconds. My Oracle installation was done by me using all defaults, same as the mysql install. I don't even know where to start looking. Any ideas? Thanks in advance and sorry that I lack the details that are most likely required for help.

• SCHA API for resource group failover / switchover history

  The Oracle Solaris Cluster framework keeps an internal log of cluster events, including switchover and failover of resource groups. These logs can be useful to Oracle support engineers for diagnosing cluster behavior. However, till now, there was no external interface to access the event history. Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.2 provides a new API option for viewing the recent history of resource group switchovers in a program-parsable format. Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.2 provides a new option tag argument RG_FAILOVER_LOG for the existing API command scha_cluster_get which can be used to list recent failover / switchover events for resource groups. The command usage is as shown below: # scha_cluster_get -O RG_FAILOVER_LOG number_of_days number_of_days : the number of days to be considered for scanning the historical logs. The command returns a list of events in the following format. Each field is separated by a semi-colon [;]: resource_group_name;source_nodes;target_nodes;time_stamp source_nodes: node_names from which resource group is failed over or was switched manually. target_nodes: node_names to which the resource group failed over or was switched manually. There is a corresponding enhancement in the C API function scha_cluster_get() which uses the SCHA_RG_FAILOVER_LOG query tag. • OpenWorld Suggest-a-Session Voting on Oracle Mix now OPEN!

  Last year the Oracle OpenWorld team decided to use Oracle Mix as a way to select some of the papers for OpenWorld and this year we are following the same process. The majority of papers for this year's conference have already been selected, however, there are some presentation slots still available so the OpenWorld team are giving you the chance to vote on which papers you want to see at this year's OpenWorld conference.The voting process has just opened and will close on June 20. I did a quick search on the list of sessions one paper really caught my eye: Case Study: Real-Time data warehousing and fraud detection with Oracle 11gR2 by Dr. Holger Friedrich. As a data warehouse product manager I would love to see this paper selected. I have attended a number of presentations over the years given by Holger and he is an excellent, knowledgeable and entertaining presenter. The subject area is, for me, very interesting as it covers topics that I know are important to our customers and this case study highlights the innovative use of key database features. I would strongly encourage everyone to please vote for this paper. The Underground PHP and Oracle Manual is designed to bridge the gap between the many PHP scripting language and the many Oracle Database books available. It contains unique material about PHP's OCI8 extension for Oracle Database, and about other components in the PHP-Oracle ecosystem. It shows PHP developers how to use PHP and Oracle together, efficiently and easily. The book has been completely refreshed. It has been updated for Oracle XE 11g and the latest PHP OCI8 extension. There are new chapters about using PHP with Oracle TimesTen, NetBeans and Oracle Tuxedo. There is also a new chapter about installing PHP on Oracle Solaris. The book now clocks in at 347 pages of great content. Acknowledgements are due to all those who have helped with this and previous editions of the book. Thanks to the product teams that assisted with brand new content. In particular Craig Mohrman contributed the chapter about PHP on Solaris.
