• Another question about handling game states

  I'm making a game designed with the entity-component paradigm that uses systems to communicate between components as explained here. I've reached the point in my development that I need to add game states (such as paused, playing, level start, round start, game over, etc.), but I'm not sure how to do it with my framework. I've looked at this code example on game states which everyone seems to reference, but I don't think it fits with my framework. It seems to have each state handling its own drawing and updating. My framework has a SystemManager that handles all the updating using systems. I don't have a loop like theirs that simply updates everything at the same time. I like my framework because it makes it easy to add new GameObjects, but doesn't have the problems some component-based designs encounter when communicating between components. I would hate to chuck it just to get pause to work. Is there a way I can add game states to my game without removing the entity-component design? Does the game state example actually fit my framework, and I'm just missing something?

• X server with nvidia driver crashing: 12.04

  My X server consistently crashes. It seems like this is happening when the X server is idle. This behaviour is new with 12.04. This is only happening on the second display of a multiseat system. Is there a configuration change I can make to stop this? • Microsoft and Application Architectures

  Microsoft has dealt with several kinds of application architectures to include but not limited to desktop applications, web applications, operating systems, relational database systems, windows services, and web services. Because of the size and market share of Microsoft, virtually every modern language works with or around a Microsoft product. Some of the languages include: Visual Basic, VB.Net, C#, C++, C, ASP.net, ASP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java and XML. From my experience, Microsoft strives to maintain an n-tier application standard where an application is comprised of multiple layers that perform specific functions, for example: presentation layer, business layer, data access layer are three general layers that just about every formally structured application contains. The presentation layer contains anything to do with displaying information to the screen and how it appears on the screen. The business layer is the middle man between the presentation layer and data access layer and transforms data from the data access layer in to useable information to be stored later or sent to an output device through the presentation layer. The data access layer does as its name implies, it allows the business layer to access data from a data source like MS SQL Server, XML, or another data source. One of my favorite technologies that Microsoft has come out with recently is the .Net Framework. This framework allows developers to code an application in multiple languages and compiles them in to one intermediate language called the Common Language Runtime (CLR). This allows VB and C# developers to work seamlessly together as if they were working in the same project. The only real disadvantage to using the .Net Framework is that it only natively runs on Microsoft operating systems. However, Microsoft does control a majority of the operating systems currently installed on modern computers and servers, especially with personal home computers. Given that the Microsoft .Net Framework is so flexible it is an ideal for business to develop applications around it as long as they wanted to commit to using Microsoft technologies and operating systems in the future. I have been a professional developer for about 9+ years now and have seen the .net framework work flawlessly in just about every instance I have used it. In addition, I have used it to develop web applications, mobile phone applications, desktop applications, web service applications, and windows service applications to name a few.

• Ad-hoc reporting similar to Microstrategy/Pentaho - is OLAP really the only choice (is OLAP even sufficient)?

  So I'm getting ready to develop an API in Java that will provide all dimensions, metrics, hierarchies, etc to a user such that they can pick and choose what they want (say, e.g., dimensions of Location (a store) and Weekly, and the metric Product Sales $), provide their choices to the api, and have it spit out an object that contains the answer to their question (the object would probably be a set of cells). I don't even believe there will be much drill up/down. The data warehouse the APIwill interface with is in a standard form (FACT tables, dimensions, star schema format). My question is, is an OLAP framework such as Mondrian the only way to achieve something akin to ad-hoc reporting? I can envisage a really large Cube (or VirtualCube) that contains most of the dimensions and metrics the user could ever want, which would give the illusion of ad-hoc reporting. The problem is that there is a ton of setup to do (so much XML) to get the framework to work with the data. Further it requires specific knowledge, such as MDX, and even moreso learning the framework peculiars (Mondrian API). Finally, I am not positive it will scale much better than simply making queries against a SQL database. OLAP to me feels like very old technology. Is performance really an issue anymore? The alternative I can think of would be dynamic SQL. If the existing tables in the data warehouse conform to a naming scheme (FACT_, DIM_, etc), or if a very simple config file/ database table containing config information existed that stored which tables are fact tables, which are dimensions, and what metrics are available, then couldn't the api read from that and assembly the appropriate sql query? Would this necessarily be harder than learning MDX, Mondrian (or another OLAP framework), and creating all the cubes? In general, I feel that OLAP is at the same time too powerful (supports drill up/down, complex functions) and outdated and am reluctant to base my architecture on it. However, I am unsure if the alternative(s), such as rolling my own ad-hoc reporting framework using dynamic SQL would remove any complexity while still fulfilling requirements, both functional and non-functional (e.g., scalability; some FACT tables have many millions of rows). I also wonder about other techniques (e.g., hive). Has anyone here tried to do ad-hoc reporting? Any advice? I expect this project to take a pretty long time (3 months min, but probably longer), so I just do not want to commit to an architecture without being absolutely sure of its pros and cons. • ubuntu 10.04 logs itself out overnight

  Every night when I leave work, I lock the screen via ubuntu's "power" button in the top right hand panel. When I come to work in the morning, I'm greeted with the log-in screen. This doesn't happen every night, but most. I'm running ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell inspiron. I've included some HW specs, and also dmesg output. Please let me know what other logs may be useful. thanks! • I have a very long and repetitive python path, where do I look to correct this?

  I know it is probably not necessary to paste the whole path, but just for the record I have done so below. Whenever I run a python command, it takes a long time to load this path I suppose. I did this by adding a folder to my python path, and putting relevant modules there, among them feedparser.   The mod_osso.so (the Apache plugin for Single Signon, provided by Oracle) is distributed with the Oracle HTTP Server (OHS), which is essentially a modified Apache. I am trying to use it on the standard Apache HTTP Server, and have not managed to get it to work. Configuration: Apache 2.2.15 OHS from the Oracle Web Tier Tools 11.1.1.2.0 Red Hat Linux 64 bit I have: Included the module in the modules directory (copied from corresponding modules dir in OHS) Included the libraries libiau.so and libclutsh.so.11.1 from Oracle Home. The absence of these libraries produced an error on starting Apache. Produced a osso.conf using the ssoreg.sh tool provided with OID (the LDAP implementation of Oracle) Created the required mod_osso.conf file, which I included in httpd.conf. I'm using the provided VS 2010 Express version that comes with the Win Mobile 7 SDK and have just used the New Project - Windows Phone Application template. I think this started happening after I had to force-restart my computer with NetBeans stil open and the app deployed, but it's hard to know for sure if this was the real catalyst. Any thoughts or help is appreciated thanks. Is it an app error? if so why no errors in the log are shown?

  Hi there, I have setup PostSharp and it appears to be working but i don't get it entering OnExit (i have logged setup to ensure it is working) ... Its a bit tricky to configure with asp.net - or is it just me ... I am using the 1.5 new version I basically have the following in my web.config and i had to add the SearchPath otherwise it can't find my assemblies <postsharp directory="C:\Program Files\PostSharp 1.5" trace="true"> <parameters> <!--<add name="parameter-name" value="parameter-value"/>--> </parameters> <searchPath> <!-- Always add the binary folder to the search path. --> <add name="bin" value="~\bin"/> </searchPath> </postsharp> I have set tracing on but what is strange to me is that it appears to build to the temp directory, maybe this is my issue, i am unsure .. hence i do F5 ... For instance, lets say I have a Car model class and want to add one price attribute (database column) per currency, given a list of currencies. What is the best way to do this? • Visual Studio Express 2012 debug mode doesn't work

  I have a project in Visual Studio that I have been working on for a while, and I have used the debugger extensively. Recently I changed some settings and I have lost the ability to stop the program and step through code. I can't figure out what I had changed that might have affected this. If I put a breakpoint in my code and try to have the program stop there, it doesn't. The break point shows up white with a red outline. If I hover the mouse over it, it says "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No executable code of the debugger's target code type is associated with this line. Possible causes include: conditional compilation, compiler optimizations, or the target architecture of this line is not supported by the current debugger code type." I know for a fact that the program executes the code where the breakpoint is because I put the breakpoint in the beginning of the InitializeComponent method. The program displays the window fine, but does not stop at the breakpoint. Yes, I am running in debug mode. It seems as though there is a disconnect between the compiled code and the source code displayed. Does anyone know what that would be, or know which compiler settings I should check to re-enable debugging? • Django conditional template inheritance

  I have template that displays object elements with hyperlinks to other parts of my site. I have another function that displays past versions of the same object. In this display, I don't want the hyperlinks. I'm under the assumption that I can't dynamically switch off the hyperlinks, so I've included both versions in the same template. I use an if statement to either display the hyperlinked version or the plain text version. I prefer to keep them in the same template because if I need to change the format of one, it will be easy to apply it to the other right there. The template extends framework.html. Framework has a breadcrumb system and it extends base.html. Base has a simple top menu system. So here's my dilemma. When viewing the standard hyperlink data, I want to see the top menu and the breadcrumbs. But when viewing the past version plain text data, I only want the data, no menu, no breadcrumbs. I'm unsure if this is possible given my current design. I tried having framework inherit the primary template so that I could choose to call either framework (and display the breadcrumbs), or the template itself, thus skipping the breadcrumbs, but I want framework.html available for other templates as well. If framework.html extends a specific template, I lose the ability to display it in other templates. I tried writing an if statement that would display a the top_menu block and the nav_menu block from base.html and framework.html respectively. This would overwrite their blocks and allow me to turn off those elements conditional on the if. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be conditional; if the block elements are in the template at all, surrounded by an if or not, I lose the menus. I thought about using {% include %} to pick up the breadcrumbs and a split out top menu. In that case though, I'll have to include it all the time. No more inheritance. Is this the best option given my requirement?

• Modularity in Flex

  I'm working on a pretty big application for Flex/Air. We are using GraniteDS and Tide to interact with the model from our Java EE server. I've been reading about modularization and Modules in Flex. The application has already been built, and I'm figuring a way out to re-design some classes and parts. From what I've read so far, I understand a Module is a different swf which can be dynamically load. Most of the tutorials/documentation are oriented to Flash "programmers" who are using Flex or Air instead of real developers, so that makes online resources harder to get. What I can't understand - yet - is how to encapsulate ActionScript classes or MXML views under this module. I've separated some of the code into libraries. For example, the generated code from Granite is in a "server" library. But I would like to separate parts of the logic with its Moderators, Controllers and Views. Are modules the way to go? Is there a "modules for dummies" or "head first Flex Modules for programmers" like tutorial in order to get a better perspective in order to build my architecture? When to choose libraries and when to choose modules? I'm using Flex 3.5, and a migration to Flex 4 is way far into the future, so no Flex 4 answers please, thanks!

• XAMPP is caching .html files running as PHP

  I have XAMPP (latest version) installed on my Mac OS 10.6.3 I've added the following to .htaccess because I want .html to be interpreted as PHP. AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html The problem is that the default XAMPP config seems to be caching .html files as static... so even though the PHP statements inside are being called (for example, 'echo time()' in index.html displays the dynamic output)... the actual file is being cached. When I make changes to a .html file, I've having to restart Apache for it to load the newest changes. Looking at httpd.conf, it looks like it's loading the following cache mods.. LoadModule file_cache_module modules/mod_file_cache.so LoadModule cache_module modules/mod_cache.so LoadModule disk_cache_module modules/mod_disk_cache.so LoadModule mem_cache_module modules/mod_mem_cache.so Any idea how to implement a system whereby it checks the timestamp of the file, before loading it from cache?   Given I have a list of dependencies, like: module1 module2 dependsOn module1 module3 dependsOn module1 module4 dependsOn module3 I would like to create a build order where each build step is found on one line, and each line contains a list of one or more modules which can be compiled at the same time, and which only depend on modules compiled earlier. So, for the above data set, create a list like: module1 module2,module3 module4 Now, this is basically just a problem of creating a directed graph, and analyzing it. Now, I am using Ant, and would very much like to use something off-the-shelf... what is the minimum of custom code I need to have it create such a dependency-aware build list starting from the given input? BTW, these modules are actually custom modules, so maven will not work.

Is this a configuration issue on my linux box, or just a difference in the way namespaces and autoloading is handled on the different operating systems

• Module based web project directory layout with git and symlinks

  I am planning my directory structure for a linux/apache/php web project like this: Only www.example.com/webroot/ will be exposed in apache www.example.com/ webroot/ index.php module1/ module2/ modules/ module1/ module1.class.php module1.js module2/ module2.class.php module2.css lib/ lib1/ lib1.class.php the modules/ and lib/ directory will only be in the php path. To make the css and js files visible in the webroot directory I am planning to use symlinks. webroot/ index.php module1/ module1.js (symlinked) module2/ module2.css (symlinked) I tried following these principles: layout by modules and libraries, not by file type and not by "public' or 'non public', index.php is an exception. This is for easier development. symlinking files that need to be public for the modules and libs to a public location, but still mirroring the layout. So the module structure is also visible in the resulting html code in the links, which might help development. How will git handle the symlinking of the single files correctly, is there something to consider? When it comes to images I will need to link directories, how to handle that with git? modules/ module3/ module3.class.php img/ img1.jpg img2.jpg img3.jpg They should be linked here: webroot/ module3/ img/ (symlinked ?) So this is a git and symlink question. But I would be interested to hear comments about the php layout, maybe you want to use the comment function for this.

• How to organize Enterprise scale Composite Applications (CAG)

  All QuickStarts and RI examples in the CAG documentation are good but I lack the more Enterprise scale examples. Let's say we have 40+ modules, each containing a Proxy,Facade,PresentationModel,Model and Views. Each module also makes calls to a Module-specific WCF service which is to be hosted in IIS or in a stand-alone console host. Our approach have been to include the UI-module, service-module and related tests into one solution so they can be developed and tested separately from other modules. My problem is how the hosting of the services should be done when the services are in separate modules and how to actually run the separate module together with the rest of the application-modules when I press F5. Is there a best practise for this? I guess it has been done before?
