• Always use dtexec.exe to test performance of your dataflows. No exceptions.

  Earlier this evening I posted a blog post entitled Investigation: Can different combinations of components effect Dataflow performance? where I compared the performance of three different dataflows all working to the same overall goal. I wanted to make one last point related to the results but I thought it warranted a blog post all of its own. Here is a screenshot of one of the dataflows that I was testing: Pretty complicated I’m sure you’ll agree. Now, when I executed this dataflow in the test it was executing in ~19seconds however in that case I was executing using the command-line tool dtexec. I also tried executing inside the BIDS development environment and in that case it took much longer – 139seconds. That’s more than seven times as long. The point I want to make is very simple. If you are testing your dataflows for performance please use dtexec. Nothing else will suffice. @Jamiet

• What build tools do not depend on java (or Ruby)?

  I'm wondering what generic build tools out there include their binary run-times and do not depend on another environment not shipped with them. For example, ANT requires Java, Rake requires Ruby, etc.. would be great if talking about also target-platform-agnostic tools, where I'd just give whatever command for building, whatever command for testing, etc.. and can then define my artifacts in CI or so. Would see something like that useful for building .NET projects (say, on both Windows .NET and Mono), and Node JS projects especially. I do not want to install Java and / or Ruby if what I want is a .NET build or a Node JS build. This is a bit of general awareness question not an exact problem I'm facing, that's why it's here not on StackOverflow. Update: To explain a bit more, what I'm after is the build script that would run MSBuild for compiling for example ( in .NET, and then maybe several Node/NPM commands in Node, etc..), and then have the rest build/test steps, instead of setting these all in MSBuild (again, in .NET case, also, wondering if there is equivalent story in Node).

• Why I don't use SSIS checkpoint files

  In a recent discussion in regard to general ETL best practises the subject of checkpoint files as a means for package restartability came up and I stated that I was dead against using them. For anyone that may care, here is why: Configuring them is distinctly unintuitive (that's a matter of opinion but if you follow the link I'll wager that you will agree) they don't make any allowance for loop iterations they cannot store variables of type Object they are limited in ability. There are many scenarios where you may want to execute certain containers regardless of whether the package is started from a checkpoint file but the current usage model does not allow for this. they are ignored by eventhandlers, which wouldn't be so bad if there were a way to toggle this behaviour in certain scenarios they dont work properly I'll expand on the last bullet point. I have encountered situations where the behaviour for tasks executing concurrently is unpredictable. That is, sometimes the completion of a task that executes concurrently with a failed/failing task will make it into the checkpoint file and sometimes it won't. This is near-impossible to reproduce but it does happen as my good friend John Welch will hopefully concur (if he is reading). Is anyone out there making successful use of checkpoint files within SSIS? I would be interested in knowing about that if so. @Jamiet

• .NET developer needs FoxPro advice

  We have a prospect with FoxPro 2.6 (whatever it means) system. Our product integrates with other systems by the means of triggers (usually). We would place couple of triggers on X system and then just pull collected data for our use. This way there is no need to customize customers product and it works great(almost real time - we poll for changes every 30 seconds). Question: Can I put triggers on FoxPro 2.6? Can access FoxPro from .NET? Any catches/caveats?

• How to attach WAR file in email from jenkins

  We have a case where a developer needs to access the last successfully built WAR file from jenkins. However, they can't access the jenkins server. I'd like to configure jenkins such that on every successful build, jenkins sends the WAR file to this user. I've installed the ext-email plugin and it seems to be working fine. Emails are being received along with the build.log. However, the WAR file isn't being received. The WAR file lives on this path in the server: /var/lib/jenkins/workspace/Ourproject/dist/our.war So I configured it under Post build actions like this: The problem is that emails are sent but the WAR file isn't being attached. Do I need to do something else?

• SSIS Dashboard v0.4

  Following the post on SSISDB script on Gist, I’ve been working on a HTML5 SSIS Dashboard, in order to have a nice looking, user friendly and, most of all, useful, SSIS Dashboard. Since this is a “spare-time” project, I’ve decided to develop it using Python since it’s THE data language (R aside), it’s a beautiful & powerful, well established and well documented and with a rich ecosystem around. Plus it has full support in Visual Studio, through the amazing Python Tools For Visual Studio plugin, I decided also to use Flask, a very good micro-framework to create websites, and use the SB Admin 2.0 Bootstrap admin template, since I’m all but a Web Designer. The result is here: https://github.com/yorek/ssis-dashboard and I can say I’m pretty satisfied with the work done so far (I’ve worked on it for probably less than 24 hours). Though there’s some features I’d like to add in t future (historical execution time, some charts, connection with AzureML to do prediction on expected execution times) it’s already usable. Of course I’ve tested it only on my development machine, so check twice before putting it in production but, give the fact that, virtually, there is not installation needed (you only need to install Python), and that all queries are based on standard SSISDB objects, I expect no big problems. If you want to test, contribute and/or give feedback please fell free to do it…I would really love to see this little project become a community project! Enjoy!

• How to test the render speed of my solution in a web browser?

  Ok, I need to test the speed of my solution in a web browser, but I have some problems, there are 2 versions of the web solution, the original one that is on server A and the "fixed" version that is on server B. I have VS2010 Ultimate, so I can make a web and load test on solution B, but I can't load the A solution on my IDE. I was trying to use fiddle2 and jmeter, but they only gave me the times of the request and response of the browsers with the server, I also want the time it takes to the browser to render the whole page. Maybe I'm misusing some of this tools... I don't know if this could be usefull but: Solution A is on VB 6.0 Solution B is on VB.Net Thanks in advance!

• Configure Jenkins and Tomcat using Puppet on Vagrant

  I'm playing with setting up my first Spring + jenkins + Tomcat CI dev environment. For now it's just a test/fun phase, but in the near future I'll be starting new project with my coworkers. That's the reason that I want development environment virtualized and exactly te same on every development machine, as well as on production server. I choosen to use Vagrant and to try to write puppet scripts that not only install everything, but also configure everything so each of us will have the same jenkins plugins, same jenkins and tomcat login and password, and literally after calling vagrant up we are ready to work. What I managed to do so far is installation of stuff needed and port forwarding. After wandering around web I've found few tutorials about jenkins configuration (here's one of them). I really want to move configuration presented in this tutorial to puppet file, so when I spread my vagrantfile and puppet file between my coworkers, I will be sure that everyone has exactly te same setup. Unfortunately I'm also green about using puppet, I don't know how to do this. Any help will be apreciated.

• The perils of double-dash comments [T-SQL]

  I was checking my Twitter feed on my way in to work this morning and was alerted to an interesting blog post by Valentino Vranken that highlights a problem regarding the OLE DB Source in SSIS. In short, using double-dash comments in SQL statements within the OLE DB Source can cause unexpected results. It really is quite an important read if you’re developing SSIS packages so head over to SSIS OLE DB Source, Parameters And Comments: A Dangerous Mix! and be educated. Note that the problem is solved in SSIS2012 and Valentino explains exactly why. If reading Valentino’s post has switched your brain into “learn mode” perhaps also check out my post SSIS: SELECT *... or select from a dropdown in an OLE DB Source component? which highlights another issue to be aware of when using the OLE DB Source. As I was reading Valentino’s post I was reminded of a slidedeck by Chris Adkin entitled T-SQL Coding Guidelines where he recommends never using double-dash comments: That’s good advice! @Jamiet

  I am having some trouble writing use cases for XML mapping after a certain trigger invoked by the system. For example, one of the scenarios goes: the store cashier sells an item, the transaction data is sent to Data management system. Now, I am writing a functional design for the scenario which deals with mapping XML fields between our system and the data management system. Question : I was wondering if some one had to deal with writing use cases or extension use cases for mapping XML fields between two systems? (There is no XSLT involved) and if you used a table to represent the fields mapping (example is below) or any other visualization tool which does not break the bank ? I searched many questions on SO and here but nothing came close to my requirement.

  Diariamente estamos em contato com diversas tecnologias, muitas delas complementares ou realizam tarefas muito semelhantes como o caso dos tablets X smartphones. Não podemos negar o quanto estas tecnologias passaram a fazer parte do hábito diário universalmente, alterando o padrão como consumimos informação, e até mesmo como utilizamos ou utilizávamos o computador.Basicamente existem 2 tipos de inovação:1 – incremental – que ocorre de acordo com as melhorias, ajustas, releituras e evolução de um produto. Este tipo de inovação podemos ver em automóveis, que seguem o mesmo princípio, porém quando comparamos um automóvel atual com um fabricado a 20 anos atrás, podemos perceber as inovações incrementais que alteraram o produto.2 – disruptiva – este tipo de inovação geralmente causar um novo momento, é até uma alteração do hábito de uso dos produtos. Foi o caso da revolução industrial, que automatizou processos de produção, ou da câmera digital que alterou a forma como habitualmente fotos eram tiradas e reveladas.Dentro deste processo existe uma curva de adoção tecnológica, esta curva foi criada americano Everett M. Rogers, PHd em sociologia e estatística.Em seu livro “The diffusion of inovations” (1962) – em português – A difusão das inovações, Rogers apresenta após diversas análises e estudos a curva de adoção tecnológica, Roger´s é o criador do termo Early Adopters muito utilizado nos dias de hoje.Abaixo podemos entender a curva de adoção:2,5% da população são os Innovators/Inovadores – eles possuem acesso á qualquer inovação antes de todos, por questões sociais, influência, conhecimento. São as pessoas que tem acesso a inovação antes que ela esteja disponível no mercado. 13,50 % são os Early Adopters, pessoas e empresa que por uma questão comportamental buscam ter as inovações assim que são lançadas, frente a isso existe uma série de vantagens e desvantagens. Estar à frente do mercado muitas vezes significa utilizar coisas que o mercado ainda não utiliza, por isso este comportamento pode colocar muitas empresas a frente de seus concorrentes mais tradicionais. Há também o risco da inovação não ser 100% aceita, ou passar por algum processo de ajuste, mas certamente os early adopters conseguem explanar melhor sobra visão de futuro.34% são os Early Majority, nesta fase da adoção muitas pessoas/empresas são influenciadas pelos early adopters, bem como inicia-se uma clico “natural” de busca por inovação. 34% são os late majority, ou seja empresas/pessoas que esperam que todos utilizem e adotam quase na última onda.Ao final temos 16% os laggards – retardatários, empresas e pessoas que só adotam inovações porque não possuem mais saída frente as alterações causadas, e precisam de alguma forma sobreviver frente as mudanças.Frente a este cenário onde você este inserido? • User Produtivity Kit - Powerful Packages (Part 1)

  User Productivity Kit provides the ability to create a variety of content types including robust topics on system process and web pages with formatted text and graphics. There are times when you want to enhance content with media types not naively created by User Productivity Kit, media types such as video, custom animations, forms, and more. One method of doing this is to maintain these media files on a web server - separate from the User Productivity Kit player content and link to the files using absolute URLs such as http://myserver/overview.html. While this will get you going, you won't benefit from the content management capabilities of the UPK Developer. Features such as check-in / check-out, history, document properties, folder permissions and more are not available to this external content. Further, if you ever need to move that content to a server with a different name or domain, you'd need to update all your links. UPK version 3.1 introduced a new document type - the package. A package is a group of folders and files that you manage in the Developer library as a single document. These package documents work in the same manner as any other document in the library and you can use all of the collaborative content development features you see with other document types. Packages can be used for anything from single Word documents, PDF files, and graphics to more intricate sets of inter-related files commonly seen with HTML files and their graphics, style sheets, and JavaScript files. The structure of the files and folders within a package will always be preserved so this means that any relative links between files in the package will work. For example, an HTML file containing an image tag with a relative link to a graphic elsewhere in the same package will continue to function properly both when viewed in the Developer and when published to outputs such as the UPK Player. Once you start to use packages, you'll soon discover that there is a lot of existing content that can be re-purposed by placing it into UPK packages. Packages are easily created by selecting File...New...Package. Files can be added in a number of ways including the "Add Files" button, copy & paste from Windows Explorer, and drag & drop. To use one of the files in the package, just create a link to the file in the package you want to target. This is supported throughout the Developer in places such as section & topic concepts, frame links and hyperlinks in web pages. A little more challenging is determining how to structure packages in your library. As I mentioned earlier, a package can contain anything from a single file to dozens of files and folders. So what should you do? You could create a package for each file. You could create one package for all your files. But which one is right? Well, there's not a right and wrong answer to this question. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. The right decision will be influenced by the package files themselves, the structure of the content in the library, the size and working style of the development team, how content is shared between different outlines and more. The first consideration can be assessed the quickest. If the content to be placed in the package is composed of multiple files and those files reference each other, they should be in the same package. There are loads of examples of this type of content. HTML files with graphics and style sheets, HTML files with embedded Flash movies, and Word documents saved as HTML are all examples where the content is composed of multiple files and the files reference each other in some way. Content like this should always be placed in a singe package such that these relative links between the files are preserved and play properly in the UPK Player. • Configure Jenkins and Tomcat using Puppet

  I'm trying to setup Spring dev environment (jenkins, tomcat) on Vagrant. What I really want to achieve is to limit config to only Puppet scripts, so I can share it with my colleagues and work together on the same environment. So far I managed to set up simple scripts to install jenkins, tomcat and so on, they work fine. What about jenkins configuration though? I'm pretty green in jenkins usage and configuration, not sure if I'm doing it the right way... I found this article and I want to migrate whole setup described in it to Puppet. Any ideas? Thanks.
