  • php functions new php developers should be aware of

    - by John
Can people suggest a list of common or popular php functions that new/junior programmers should be aware of so that they don't "re-invent-the-wheel" so to speak? For example, I've seen a lot of new coders try to write their own date parsing functions when a combination of date(), strtotime() and time() can do everything their looking for. Any other ones you guys want to add to this list? Thanks

  • Do you have examples of un-helpful/Obscure error messages

    - by Wiretap
Yesterday I got this error The processing instruction target matching "[xX][mM][lL]" is not allowed when I investigated, it was caused by whitespace at the very start of my XML document. Not difficult to solve, but I was struck with how unhelpful that particular error message was to identifying the actual problem. So what other examples of obscure errors do people have, and are you willing to admit to some of your own making.

  • Swing verify code on event dispatch thread at runtime

    - by Jeff Storey
Are there any libraries that instrument code to verify that methods called on swing components are called on the event dispatch thread? It probably wouldn't be too difficult to write some basic code for doing this, but I'm sure there are edge cases and whatnot that other people have handled. I'm looking for this at runtime though, not for unit tests. thanks, Jeff

  • MySQL Select names with last names starting with certain letter

    - by Brian
I have a MySQL database with a field Name which contains full names. To select all people with last names starting with a particular letter, let's say A for this example, I use the following query: SELECT * FROM db WHERE Name LIKE '% A%'. However, this also selects users who have a middle name starting with A. Is there anyway to alter this query so that only a last name starting in A will be selected?

  • Is Prince the best way to PDF in Ruby on Rails?

    - by Angela
After several Google searches, it appears that the way to create PDF's in Rails from HTML and CSS (versus a new markup language) is to use Prince. With licensing at $3800 for my non-big-commercial app, I'm wondering if this is, in fact, consensus or people have an alternative they can share the what's and how's.

  • Query MSQL for winners, starting at xth place using SELECT

    - by incrediman
In my MySQL table Winners, I have a list of people who have won. What I'd like to do is select a list of the names of 10 winners. So what I have right now is this: SELECT name FROM Winners ORDER BY points DESC LIMIT 10 This returns the first 10 winners which is great. But how can I make it (for example) return 10 winners, but starting at 20th place?

  • possible to fetch @mentions thru Facebook API (like thru Twitter API?)

    - by db
I'm looking to implement a feature where I am able to collect @mentions through the facebook API in a similar fashion to the twitter API. Specifically, if I run a group called foo, and other people on facebook mention @foo in their wall posts, I'd like to fetch and collect the text of that particular @foo mention. I can't find any relevant documentation on Facebook....

  • Design patterns to avoid

    - by Brian Rasmussen
A lot of people seem to agree, that the Singleton pattern has a number of drawbacks and some even suggest to avoid the pattern all together. There's an excellent discussion here. Please direct any comments about the Singleton pattern to that question. Are there other design patterns, that should be avoided or used with great care?

  • Insight into how things get printed onto the screen (cout, printf) and origin of really complex stuff

    - by sil3nt
I've always wondered this, and still haven't found the answer. Whenever we use "cout" or "printf" how exactly is that printed on the screen?. How does the text come out as it does...(probably quite a vague question here, ill work with whatever you give me.). So basically how are those functions made?..is it assembly?, if so where does that begin?. This brings on more questions like how on earth have they made openGl/directx functions.. break it down people break it down.:)

  • Providing an application data update from a website

    - by Craig Johnston
I need to provide an update to application data as a download from a website. The update would actually just be the replacing of some data files with some updated ones. The update, which I assume would be some sort of setup package type program, would need to be able to do the following: access the file system and registry to determine where files should be copied to supply the files to be copied provide strong security so the data files cannot be downloaded or used by the wrong people What would be best way to achieve all of the above?

From reading the YQL info, it seemed like I could use any flickr query in YQL but for some reason I cannot use flickr.people.getPublicPhotos call to access all pictures from a certain person. When I try any such query it isn't recognized. Is this possible? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!

  • Count words like Microsoft Word does

    - by Maarten
I need to count words in a string using PHP or Javascript (preferably PHP). The problem is that the counting needs to be the same as it works in Microsoft Word, because that is where the people assemble their original texts in so that is their reference frame. PHP has a word counting function (http://php.net/manual/en/function.str-word-count.php) but that is not 100% the same as far as I know. Any pointers?
