  • WiFi on Ubuntu 12.04 custom: downloading unbearably slow

    - by Mark
    iwconfig reports 11 Mbps, yet I've seen as low as <1 KBps. This is the latest in my laundry list of Ubuntu problems in a dual-boot machine (cyberpowerpc custom, intel i7-3820, nvidia gtx 570). I received it two days ago, Windows 7 running fine, still having problems with Ubuntu. The browsing is intermittent but unacceptable. e.g. I could get to this site last night but I couldn't post this question. The downloading is unbearably slow, I can't download anything or install any packages because the speed is so slow. e.g. I am trying to install vim which is inexplicably missing from my 12.04 install (add another one to the problems list) and my download speed reported in the terminal was 241 B/s. Yes, bytes. iwconfig reports 11 Mbps, which further adds to the confusion. User@ubuntu:~$ iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"linksys" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:18:39:76:2C:A1 Bit Rate=11 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=36/70 Signal level=-74 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:54 Invalid misc:18 Missed beacon:0 eth0 no wireless extensions. Any ideas? I see this is a problem a lot of people, but none of the on line solutions have worked for me so far. e.g. one site recommends editing the ath9k.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d, yet this file isn't even in the folder: User@ubuntu:/$ cd etc/modprobe.d User@ubuntu:/etc/modprobe.d$ ls alsa-base.conf blacklist-oss.conf blacklist-ath_pci.conf blacklist-rare-network.conf blacklist.conf blacklist-watchdog.conf blacklist-firewire.conf dkms.conf blacklist-framebuffer.conf nvidia-current_hybrid.conf blacklist-modem.conf nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf I think the nvidia gpu might be mucking things up. I had the "blinking cursor" problem when installing in the first place, and then I had the monitor out of range problem as well. I have my faithful Asus laptop, which is running Ubuntu 12.04 just fine. The only difference is executing host -t SOA local in the terminal gives User@ubuntu:~$ host -t SOA local local has SOA record local. nobody.localhost. 42 86400 43200 604800 10800 in my new machine, and the command reports Host local. not found in the laptop. Help would be most welcome, as I am in danger of reverting back to Windows. I'm seriously considering it. Sorry for the length, trying to show my effort in resolving the issue and include terminal snippets that might be helpful.

  • java packets byte

    - by user303289
    Guys, I am implementing a protocol in one of the wireless project. I am stucked at one point. In of the java file i am suppose to receive a packet and that packet is 12 byte packet and I have to write different functions for reading different parts of packets and convert it to diferent type. Like I want first four byte in one of the function and convert it to int, next two bytes in string. and again next two in string, last two hop in string and followed by last two int. I want follwing function to implement: // here is the interface /* FloodingData should use methods defined in this class. */ class FloodingPacket{ public static void main(String arg[]){ byte FloodingPack[]; // just for example to test in code FloodingPack=new byte[12]; interface IFloodingPacket { // Returns the unique sequence number for the packet int getSequenceNumber() ; // Returns the source address for the packet String getSourceAddress(); // Returns the destination address for the packet String getDestinationAddress(); // Returns the last hop address for the packet String getLastHopAddress(); // Sets the last hop address to the address of the node // which the packet was received from void updateLastHopAddress(); // Returns the entire packet in bytes (for sending) byte[] getBytes(); // Sets the bytes of the packet (for receiving) void setBytes(byte[] packet); }

  • Router's ssid changes from infrastructure to ad-hoc

    - by waldo
    For a period of time the router's ssid is shown (on various computers) as a normal infrastructure network - computers connect fine and everything works however after a few minutes / hours all computers see the same ssid as an ad-hoc network (not infrastructure). At this point a computer that was already connected continues to work - a computer that isn't cannot connect. Rebooting the router temporarily restores the visibility of the correct infrastructure ssid. Is something interfering? Connecting computers: macbook (2009), iphone 3g, windows vista desktop, windows xp desktop. • Access points fighting for dominance?

    - by Phillip Oldham
    We have a small office with a large number of wireless devices (a mixture of desktop machines, laptops, and wifi-enabled phones) all working from a single Apple Airport Extreme which extends our wired network. I've added another Airport Extreme for resiliency, since we've been seeing a decrease in performance and (as far as I understand) access points can only handle a small number of clients. I set the new AP to extend the current network so that the clients weren't constantly switching between different wireless networks, however as soon as this AP was configured all the wireless devices started seeing network trouble, flicking on and off. I'm assuming that this is because both APs are reasonably strong, and the client can't decide which to use. What is the best route to follow to resolve this? What I'm aiming for is wireless resiliency; preferably having two APs share the network load, or if this isn't an option then having a primary AP with a "fail-over", should the primary go down for any reason.

  • Bridging networks problems

    - by Eric
    In my setup I have 3 computers and 2 (wireless d-link) routers. Computer1 has ethernet and wireless interfaces ethernet : 192.168.0.x (DHCP) wireless : 192.168.10.254 (static) Computer 2 has ethernet with two ips ethernet1 : 192.168.0.90 (static) ethernet2 : 192.168.10.110 (static) Computer 3 is a particular device with a hardcoded ip that I can't change wireless : 192.168.10.41 (static) Router1 manages internet and DHCP for network 192.168.0.0/24 Router2 is more complicated. I don't use DHCP. I use it to bridge between both networks. Its static ip is 192.168.10.1 Computer1 can ping Computer2. Computer1 can ping Computer3. Computer1 can ping Router1. Computer1 cannot ping Router2. Computer2 cannot ping Computer3. Computer2 can ping Router2. Router1 can ping Router1 Router2 can ping Computer2 Router2 cannot ping Computer1 Router2 cannot ping Computer3 This is very weird. Router2 manages the wireless connection, it should be able to ping its own computers right? My question is obviously : How can I make it so Computer2 can access everything else. This is a traditional case of "it was working before christmas and now it doesn't". The ethernet wiring is as follow : [ Computer1 ]----[ Router1 ]---[ Router2 ]---[ Computer3 ] I am using switch (lan) ports on Router1/2.

  • Windows 7/8 can't connect to an N Router

    - by xenoterracide
    I have a router running OpenWRT backfire, with N and A/B/G being broadcast. A linux laptop, and a Mac laptop can see the N network and connect to it (or at least they could last weekend). But there is now a Windows 7 Desktop with a B/G/N wireless card, and a Windows 8 Laptop with a B/G/N wireless card that can't see the N network only the B/G broadcast. The B/G and N have different SSID's and Encryption ( WEP and WPA2 PSK respectively ). The N SSID isn't even visible. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to troubleshoot further? Or what might be the cause? update wireless info Desktop Dell Wireless 1502 802.11b/g/n Atheros Communications Inc 9.2.0.412

  • Can I use an apple airport express as a wired bridge?

    I have a wireless network using an Apple Airport extreme. That device is set up in my office and hooked up to the cable modem. I have a TV in another room which can accept a wired internet connection (not wireless enabled). Can I use an Apple airport express's ethernet jack to create a wireless to wired bridge? If not what device would I use to do the same thing?

  • Network configuration with limited hardware

    - by Pavel
    I have cable internet and I have two PC. One of them has wireless and ethernet, the other pc has ethernet only. Also, I have a dsl modem that has wireless builtin (some common speedstream model). My goal is to connect all of them so that both have internet access. As I understand, I have two options: connect speedstream to the cable and then connect other PC's to speedstream; OR, connect pc with wireless to the cable and then connect the other pc that has ethernet only using ethernet+wireless through speestream. First one seems to be easy, but it doesn't seem to work. What about the other choice? Is it possible to do it?

There is a wireless network where this computer is, but no wireless adapter in the computer. I have a laptop running Windows 7 that can connect to the wireless, and the computer is running Windows Vista. What is the best way to get them both connected? I know I can buy a USB wireless adapter or something for the computer, but is there an easy way to do it with what I've got?

  • Windows 7 unidentified network (or limited access) after hibernate.

    - by null
    My windows 7 network will show limited access or unidentified network after coming up from hibernation. In the office I normally use LAN connection, I turn-off my wireless card (DELL Latitude has on/off switch for the wireless card). When I back at home I will turn on the wireless card, but it will take about 15 seconds to detect my home WIFI and then show limited access. I will have to restart the notebook and it will be able to connect to my WIFI and internet. The problem will be solved if I restart the notebook, but that defeats the purpose of hibernation doesn't it? I have tried uninstalling the wireless card driver but still does not solve it. I also tried updating my network card driver but windows says I am using the latest driver. On support.dell.com also showing I am using the latest driver.

  • Mouse wheel not scrolling in JDialog but working in JFrame

    - by Iulian Serbanoiu
    Hello, I'm facing a frustrating issue. I have an application where the scroll wheel doesn't work in a JDialog window (but works in a JFrame). Here's the code: import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.event.*; public class Failtest extends JFrame { public static void main(String[] args) { new Failtest(); } public Failtest() { super(); setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.DISPOSE_ON_CLOSE); setTitle("FRAME"); JScrollPane sp1 = new JScrollPane(getNewList()); add(sp1); setSize(150, 150); setVisible(true); JDialog d = new JDialog(this, false);// NOT WORKING //JDialog d = new JDialog((JFrame)null, false); // NOT WORKING //JDialog d = new JDialog((JDialog)null, false);// WORKING - WHY? d.setTitle("DIALOG"); d.setDefaultCloseOperation(JDialog.DISPOSE_ON_CLOSE); JScrollPane sp = new JScrollPane(getNewList()); d.add(sp); d.setSize(150, 150); d.setVisible(true); } public JList getNewList() { String objs[] = new String[30]; for(int i=0; i<objs.length; i++) { objs[i] = "Item "+i; } JList l = new JList(objs); return l; } } I found a solution which is present as a comment in the java code - the constructor receiving a (JDialog)null parameter. Can someone enlighten me? My opinion is that this is a java bug. Tested on Windows XP-SP3 with 1 JDK and 2 JREs: D:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_17\bin>javac -version javac 1.6.0_17 D:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_17\bin>java -version java version "1.6.0_17" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing) D:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_17\bin>cd .. D:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_17>java -version java version "1.6.0_18" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_18-b07) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 16.0-b13, mixed mode, sharing) Thank you in advance, Iulian Serbanoiu PS: The problem is not new - the code is taken from a forum (here) where this problem was also mentioned - but no solutions to it (yet) LATER EDIT: The problem persists with jre/jdk_1.6.0_10, 1.6.0_16 also LATER EDIT 2: Back home, tested on linux (Ubuntu - lucid/lynx) - both with openjdk and sun-java from distribution repo and it works (I used the .class file compiled on Windows) !!! - so I believe I'm facing a JRE bug that happens on some Windows configurations.

    I have a program that shows a tree representation of an XML file. Using a number of sources online I have Copy/Paste within a single instance of the program working. I am using the system Clipboard. What I need though is to be able to copy a node from one instance of the program and paste to a different instance of the same program. I have tried a number of different options, all resulting in the same behavior. When pasting from within the same application the clipboardContent contains a "transferable" object with the correct data along with an isLocal set to "true". When I perform the copy and then attempt the paste from another instance of the same program running the clipboardContent contains a "flavorsToData" HashMap and "flavors" values, the check for isDataFlavorSupported fails (never hits my custom class that represents the new flavor). I have tried using different values for the requestor object in the getContents() call. Likewise I have tried a few different ClipboardOwners for the setContent() call. Neither seem to change the behavior in any way. I am sorely tempted to convert the node that is being copied back into a textual XML format, and then on the paste convert back to the DOM model, but would rather not if possible. This class is used to define the DataFlavor and transferable object: import java.awt.datatransfer.*; import org.w3c.dom.Node; public class NodeCopyPaste implements Transferable { static public DataFlavor NodeFlavor; private DataFlavor [] supportedFlavors = {NodeFlavor}; public Node aNode; public NodeCopyPaste (Node paraNode) { aNode = paraNode; try { NodeFlavor = new DataFlavor (Class.forName ("org.w3c.dom.Node"), "Node"); } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) { e.printStackTrace (); } } public synchronized DataFlavor [] getTransferDataFlavors () { return (supportedFlavors); } public boolean isDataFlavorSupported (DataFlavor nodeFlavor) { return (nodeFlavor.equals (NodeFlavor)); } public synchronized Object getTransferData (DataFlavor nFlavor) throws UnsupportedFlavorException { if (nFlavor.equals (NodeFlavor)) return (this); else throw new UnsupportedFlavorException (nFlavor); } public void lostOwnership (Clipboard parClipboard, Transferable parTransferable) { } } I define a Clipboard object from the main application screen and then tie in copy and paste handlers for the mouse clicks: During initialization I assign the system clipboard: clippy = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getSystemClipboard(); Copy Handler Node copyNode = ((CLIInfo) node.getUserObject()).DOMNode.cloneNode(true); NodeCopyPaste contents = new NodeCopyPaste(copyNode); clippy.setContents (contents, null); Paste Handler Transferable clipboardContent = clippy.getContents (null); Node clonedNode = null; if ((clipboardContent != null) && (clipboardContent.isDataFlavorSupported (NodeCopyPaste.NodeFlavor))) { try { NodeCopyPaste tempNCP = (NodeCopyPaste) clipboardContent.getTransferData (NodeCopyPaste.NodeFlavor); clonedNode = tempNCP.aNode.cloneNode(true); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace (); } Thanks!

  • NullPointerException using datanucleus-json with S3

    - by Matt
    I'm using datanucleus 3.2.7 from Maven, trying to use the Amazon S3 JPA provider. I can successfully write data into S3, but querying either by using "SELECT u FROM User u" or "SELECT u FROM User u WHERE id = :id" causes a NullPointerException to be thrown. Using the RDBMS provider, everything works perfectly. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Main.java EntityManagerFactory factory = Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory("MyUnit"); EntityManager entityManager = factory.createEntityManager(); Query query = entityManager.createQuery("SELECT u FROM User u", User.class); List<User> users = query.getResultList(); // Null pointer exception here for(User u:users) System.out.println(u); User.java package test; import javax.persistence.*; @Entity @Table(name = "User") public class User { @Id public String id; public String name; public User(String id, String name) { this.id = id; this.name = name; } public String toString() { return id+" : "+name; } } persistence.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?> <persistence xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_1_0.xsd" version="1.0"> <persistence-unit name="MyUnit"> <class>test.User</class> <exclude-unlisted-classes /> <properties> <properties> <property name="datanucleus.ConnectionURL" value="amazons3:http://s3.amazonaws.com/" /> <property name="datanucleus.ConnectionUserName" value="xxxxx" /> <property name="datanucleus.ConnectionPassword" value="xxxxx" /> <property name="datanucleus.cloud.storage.bucket" value="my-bucket" /> </properties> <property name="datanucleus.autoCreateSchema" value="true" /> </properties> </persistence-unit> </persistence> Exception java.lang.NullPointerException at org.datanucleus.NucleusContext.isClassWithIdentityCacheable(NucleusContext.java:1840) at org.datanucleus.ExecutionContextImpl.getObjectFromLevel2Cache(ExecutionContextImpl.java:5287) at org.datanucleus.ExecutionContextImpl.getObjectFromCache(ExecutionContextImpl.java:5191) at org.datanucleus.ExecutionContextImpl.findObject(ExecutionContextImpl.java:3137) at org.datanucleus.store.json.CloudStoragePersistenceHandler.getObjectsOfCandidateType(CloudStoragePersistenceHandler.java:367) at org.datanucleus.store.json.query.JPQLQuery.performExecute(JPQLQuery.java:94) at org.datanucleus.store.query.Query.executeQuery(Query.java:1786) at org.datanucleus.store.query.Query.executeWithMap(Query.java:1690) at org.datanucleus.api.jpa.JPAQuery.getResultList(JPAQuery.java:194) at test.Main.main(Main.java:16)
