• Is it possible to programatically log access to a windows share (SMB share) using the .Net framework

  Just wondering if it is possible to figure out who has read files from a Windows share (using .NET ideally but win32 native will do)? What I'm try to do is create something like awstats for a windows share so I can see who is accessing what and which are the most popular files. I'm not interested in changes - I just want to log access (with time) along with ip / hostname and what file.

• How do I create a Linked Server in SQL Server 2005 to a password protected Access 95 database?

  I need to create a linked server with SQL Server Management Studio 2005 to an Access 95 database, which happens to be password protected at the database level. User level security has not been implemented. I cannot convert the Access database to a newer version. It is being used by a 3rd party application; so modifying it, in any way, is not allowed. I've tried using the Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider and the ODBC OLE DB Provider. The 3rd party application creates a System DSN (with the proper database password), but I've not had any luck in using either method. If I were using a standard connection string, I think it would look something like this: Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source='C:\Test.mdb';Jet OLEDB:Database Password=####; I'm fairly certain I need to somehow incorporate Jet OLEDB:Database Password into the linked server setup, but haven't figured out how. I've posted the scripts I'm using along with the associated error messages below. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll provide more details if needed, just ask. Thanks!   I'm trying to configure under Linux (Kubuntu 9.10) a VPN I already use from Windows. I installed the network-manager-pptp package and added the vpn under Network Manager. • Replicate between mysql 5.0.xx community and enterprise edition over ssh

  I'm trying to setup a mysql replication over an SSH tunnel. The odd thing about this setup is that I have one master with mysql 5.0.60sp1-enterprise-gpl-log and one slave with mysql 5.0.67-community-log. Could it be so that it's not possible to replicate between community and enterprise edition? As you can see in my log below, it's possible to login on the remote server with the mysql client. • Forwarding rsyslog to syslog-ng, with FQDN and facility separation

  I'm attempting to configure my rsyslog clients to forward messages to my syslog-ng log repository systems. Forwarding messages works "out of the box", but my clients are logging short names, not FQDNs. As a result the messages on the syslog repo use short names as well, which is a problem because one can't determine which system the message originated from easily. My clients get their names through DHCP / DNS. I've tried a number of solutions trying to get this working, but without success. I'm using rsyslog 4.6.2 and syslog-ng 3.2.5. I've tried setting $PreserveFQDN on as the first directive in /etc/rsyslog.conf (and restarting rsyslog of course). It seems to have no effect. hostname --fqdn on the client returns the proper FQDN, so the problem isn't whether the system can actually figure out its own FQDN. $LocalHostName <fqdn> looked promising, but this directive isn't available in my version of rsyslog (Available since 4.7.4+, 5.7.3+, 6.1.3+). Upgrading isn't an option at the moment. Configuring the syslog-ng server to populate names based on reverse lookups via DNS isn't an option. There are complexities with reverse DNS and the public cloud. Specifying for the forwarder to use a custom template seems like a viable option at first glance. I can specify the following, which causes local logging to begin using the FQDN on the syslog-ng repo. $template MyTemplate, "%timestamp% <FQDN> %syslogtag%%msg%" $ActionForwardDefaultTemplate MyTemplate However, when I put this in place syslog-ng seems to be unable to categorize messages by facility or priority. Messages come in as FQDN, but everything is put in to user.log. When I don't use the custom template, messages are properly categorized under facility and priority, but with the short name. So, in summary, if I manually trick rsyslog into including the FQDN, priority and facility becomes lost details to syslog-ng. • Why can't I connect to a Cisco wireless access point?

  I'm running a Lucid Netbook Remix on my Dell Inspiron 600m and I was not able to connect to the wireless network at the Hacker Dojo in Mountain View yesterday. There were plenty of other people on the network - MS, Mac, and Linux boxes - but my laptop would never get an ip address. I can connect to my home network, which is open, and I've never had a problem connecting at the coffee shop, which uses WPA. The Hacker Dojo is running WPA and we checked the password a number of times but got no love. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.   The core of any file server is its file system and ZFS provides the foundation on which we have built our ubiquitous file sharing and single access control model.  ZFS has a rich, Windows and NFSv4 compatible, ACL implementation (ZFS only uses ACLs), it understands both UNIX IDs and Windows SIDs and it is integrated with the identity mapping service; it knows when a UNIX/NIS user and a Windows user are equivalent, and similarly for groups.  We have a single access control architecture, regardless of whether you are accessing the system via NFS or SMB/CIFS.The NFS and SMB protocol services are also integrated with the identity mapping service and shares are not restricted to UNIX permissions or Windows permissions.  All access control is performed by ZFS, the system can always share file systems simultaneously over both protocols and our model is native access to any share from either protocol.Modal architectures have unnecessary restrictions, confusing rules, administrative overhead and weird deployments to try to make them work; they exist as a compromise not because they offer a benefit.  Having some shares that only support UNIX permissions, others that only support ACLs and some that support both in a quirky way really doesn't seem like the sort of thing you'd want in a multi-protocol file server.  Perhaps because the server has been built on a file system that was designed for UNIX permissions, possibly with ACL support bolted on as an add-on afterthought, or because the protocol services are not truly integrated with the operating system, it may not be capable of supporting a single integrated model.With a single, integrated sharing and access control model: If you connect from Windows or another SMB/CIFS client: The system creates a credential containing both your Windows identity and your UNIX/NIS identity.  The credential includes UNIX/NIS IDs and SIDs, and UNIX/NIS groups and Windows groups. If your Windows identity is mapped to an ephemeral ID, files created by you will be owned by your Windows identity (ZFS understands both UNIX IDs and Windows SIDs). If your Windows identity is mapped to a real UNIX/NIS UID, files created by you will be owned by your UNIX/NIS identity. If you access a file that you previously created from UNIX, the system will map your UNIX identity to your Windows identity and recognize that you are the owner.  Identity mapping also supports access checking if you are being assessed for access via the ACL. If you connect via NFS (typically from a UNIX client): The system creates a credential containing your UNIX/NIS identity (including groups). Files you create will be owned by your UNIX/NIS identity. If you access a file that you previously created from Windows and the file is owned by your UID, no mapping is required. Otherwise the system will map your Windows identity to your UNIX/NIS identity and recognize that you are the owner.  Again, mapping is fully supported during ACL processing. The NFS, SMB/CIFS and ZFS services all work cooperatively to ensure that your UNIX identity and your Windows identity are equivalent when you access the system.  This, along with the single ACL-based access control implementation, results in a system that provides that elusive ubiquitous file sharing experience.

  Hi guys, I have a primary write server (server1) which replications to two servers (server2 and server3) which are query servers. I am replicating all databases to these servers including the MySQL database. When i execute a GRANT as follows replication works perfectly.. GRANT execute,select ON database1.* TO `user1`@`host` IDENTIFIED BY 'password'; However if i did the same GRANT to alter permissions on an existing user without IDENTIFIED clause replication breaks.. Error 'Can't find any matching row in the user table' on query. Default database: 'mysql'. As my puppet manifests get more complex I find it difficult to apply the DRY (don't repeat yourself) principle. Below is a simplified snippet of what I am after, but doesn't work because puppet throws various errors depending up whether I use classes or defines. • Can't install Ubuntu 11.10 on a seperate disk partition. I have a log file. Please help!

  Before I installed Ubuntu, I resized my C: drive (which has my Windows 7 OS). Prior to resizing, I even defragged the said drive. I tried using Wubi to install it on the created partition, but I receive an error. I have the log file and I would post it but it's too long and the site won't let me. :(So anyway, I wasn't able to install it, so I uninstalled it. Upon uninstalling Wubi and Ubuntu, I tried installing it by having the CD to my CD ROM. The installation was a success, however, upon rebooting I can neither boot to Ubuntu OR Windows 7. I get stuck in an infinite bootloop. I hope you can help me out! :(

• Snow Leopard doesn't repair permissions, despite showing / saying its fixed them?

  Sometime ago, I used carbon copy as I was replacing my hard drive in my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. Afterwards, on my new drive I had some permission problems. I've tried several times running a repair permissions / repair disk from disk util. It shows that there are problems and I think it says its correceted the problems. However the problems remain, what can I do to fix them ?
