• What’s the Difference Between Succession Management and Talent Reviews?

  By Marcie Van Houten Is there a difference or are they pieces of one holistic strategic talent process? And can you have one without the other?  First, let me give a quick definition of each.  Succession planning (or management) is about creating succession slates or talent pools in support of a critical job or position or sets thereof. And then using those plans to help mitigate risk and plan talent needs for the organization.  Talent reviews (known by other names often) are sets of meetings where managers and executives come together to review, discuss and often heatedly debate the merits and potential of their employees, and then place and sometimes calibrate that talent on a performance to potential matrix.  These are some of the most strategic conversations happening in conference rooms across the globe. I speak with a lot of organizations about their practices in this area and the answers to these questions are as varied and nuanced as there are organizations thinking about them.  Some are passionate about their talent review processes and have a very evolved and thoughtful approach.  They really know their people, where their talent is, and the opportunities they plan to offer them.  And to them that is their succession process.  They may never create a slate of named candidates for a job or assign employees to formal talent pools.   On the flip side there are other organizations that create slates and slates and often multiple talent pools to support their strategic positions.  Through these, they are able to mitigate the risk associated with having a key player leave their organization.  And for them, that is their succession process.  Some will start from the lower levels of their organization and roll up their succession plans, while other organizations only cover their top 200 executives and key positions with plans.  And then there are organizations that leverage some of all of these.  Ultimately, the goals are to increase employee engagement, reduce talent-related risk, ensure the right talent is aligned to the strategic initiatives and to drive business value.  The approaches are as unique as the organizations they represent and the business opportunities they are looking to seize upon.   And that's ok.  It's great in fact. Because one thing that is common is the recognition that the need to know your people and align your top talent to the future needs of the organization is mission critical.   Dear Serverfault community, After researching a number of distributed file systems for deployment in a production environment with the main purpose of performing both batch and real-time distributed computing I've identified the following list as potential candidates, mainly on maturity, license and support: Ceph Lustre GlusterFS HDFS FhGFS MooseFS XtreemFS The key properties that our system should exhibit: an open source, liberally licensed, yet production ready, e.g. a mature, reliable, community and commercially supported solution; ability to run on commodity hardware, preferably be designed for it; provide high availability of the data with the most focus on reads; high scalability, so operation over multiple data centres, possibly on a global scale; removal of single points of failure with the use of replication and distribution of (meta-)data, e.g. provide fault-tolerance. The sensitivity points that were identified, and resulted in the following questions, are: transparency to the processing layer / application with respect to data locality, e.g. know where data is physically located on a server level, mainly for resource allocation and fast processing, high performance, how can this be accomplished? Do you from experience know what solutions provide this transparency and to what extent? posix compliance, or conformance, is mentioned on the wiki pages of most of the above listed solutions. The question here mainly is, how relevant is support for the posix standard? Hadoop for example isn't posix compliant by design, what are the pro's and con's? what about the difference between synchronous and asynchronous opeartion of a distributed file system. Though a synchronous distributed file system has the preference because of reliability it also imposes certain limitations with respect to scalability.   Hi There, I'm writing for iphone OS 3.1.3. I want the search button in the keyboard from my UISearchBar to have the search button enabled all the time. If this was any old UITextField (not a search bar) the property would be enablesReturnKeyAutomatically. • Random Gui errors using C# Mono on OSX

  Hello. Im developing a app in c# (winforms), which uses mono to run on osx. It contains some dynamic controls, for example a custom groupbox which contains some labels and textboxes, a button etc. these boxes can both be added and removed dynamically. Problem arises both when they are created, and removed, or even when a messagebox is shown. What happens is that sometimes on rendering white boxes appears, or some labels are not drawn correctly. And sometimes when a messagebox appears, it first opens up like 5 dummies which are just blank, and which you cant close. Am i doing something wrong, should i sleep the gui thread a bit after each creation, or should i invalidate stuff on my own? Or should i try GTK#? Many thanks on input on this, Erik

• Change present working directory of a calling shell from a ruby script

  I'm writing a simple ruby sandbox command-line utility to copy and unzip directories from a remote filesystem to a local scratch directory in order to unzip them and let users edit the files. I'm using Dir.mktmpdir as the default scratch directory, which gives a really ugly path (for example: /var/folders/zz/zzzivhrRnAmviuee+++1vE+++yo/-Tmp-/d20100311-70034-abz5zj) I'd like the last action of the copy-and-unzip script to cd the calling shell into the new scratch directory so people can access it easily, but I can't figure out how to change the PWD of the calling shell. One possibility is to have the utility print out the new path to stdout and then run the script as part of a subshell (i.e. cd $(sandbox my_dir) ), but I want to print out progress on the copy-and-unzipping since it can take up to 10 minutes, so this won't work. Should I just have it go to a pre-determined, easy-to-find scratch directory? Does anyone have a better suggestion? Thanks in advance for your help. -Erik

  Is there any reason to expose an internal collection as a ReadOnlyCollection rather than an IEnumerable if the calling code only iterates over the collection? class Bar { private ICollection<Foo> foos; // Which one is to be preferred? public IEnumerable<Foo> Foos { ... } public ReadOnlyCollection<Foo> Foos { ... } } // Calling code: foreach (var f in bar.Foos) DoSomething(f); As I see it IEnumerable is a subset of the interface of ReadOnlyCollection and it does not allow the user to modify the collection. So if the IEnumberable interface is enough then that is the one to use. Is that a proper way of reasoning about it or am I missing something? Thanks /Erik

When using my real implementation for repository (NHibernate based), the above code works (because the save operation would cascade to the student added at the previous line), Do you know of any fake repository implementation which support this behaviour?   Hi there, I have readed about how to prevent CSRF-attacks in the last days. I am going to update the token in every pageload, save the token in the session and make a check when submitting a form. But what if the user has, lets say 3 tabs open with my website, and I just store the last token in the session? This will overwrite the token with another token, and some post-action is going to fail. Do I need to store all tokens in the session, or is there a better solution to get this working? • How can I put text from a multi-line text box into one string?

  Dear reader, I'm faced with a bit of an issue. The scenario is that I have a multi-line text box and I want to put all that text into one single string, without any new lines in it. This is what I have at the moment: string[] values = tbxValueList.Text.Split('\n'); foreach (string value in values) { if (value != "" && value != " " && value != null && value != "|") { valueList += value; } } The problem is that no matter what I try and what I do, there is always a new line (at least I think?) in my string, so instead of getting: "valuevaluevalue" I get: "value value value". I've even tried to replace with string.Replace and regex.Replace, but alas to no avail. Please advise. Yours sincerely, Kevin van Zanten

I've explored the subject, including the posts in this site (which i love very much), when boiled down, the main advantage of wpf are : binding controls to properties in xaml. binding commands to command objects in the viewmodel. the first feature is easy to implement (in code), or with a generic control binder, which binds all the controls in the form. the second feature is a little harder to implement, but if you inherit from all your controls and add a command property (which is triggered by an internal event such as click), which is binded to a command instance in the ViewModel. The challenges I'm currently aware of are : implementing a commandmanager, (which will trigger the CanInvoke method of the commands as necessery. winforms only supports one level of databinding : datasource, datamember, wpf is much more flexible. am i missing any other major features that winforms lacks in comparison with wpf, when attempting to implement this design pattern? i sure many of you will recommend some sort of MVP pattern, but MVVM/Presentation model is the way to go for me, because I'll want future WPF support. • PHP: Next Available Value in an Array, starting with a non-indexed value

  I've been stumped on this PHP issue for about a day now. Basically, we have an array of hours formatted in 24-hour format, and an arbitrary value ($hour) (also a 24-hour). The problem is, we need to take $hour, and get the next available value in the array, starting with the value that immediately proceeds $hour. The array might look something like: $goodHours = array('8,9,10,11,12,19,20,21). Then the hour value might be: $hour = 14; So, we need some way to know that 19 is the next best time. Additionally, we might also need to get the second, third, or fourth (etc) available value. The issue seems to be that because 14 isn't a value in the array, there is not index to reference that would let us increment to the next value. To make things simpler, I've taken $goodHours and repeated the values several times just so I don't have to deal with going back to the start (maybe not the best way to do it, but a quick fix). I have a feeling this is something simple I'm missing, but I would be so appreciative if anyone could shed some light. Erik

• Egy klassz ADF eloadás

  Túl vagyunk a Technology Forum rendezvényünkön, és én azt gondolom nagyon hasznos volt. Grant nagyszeru eloadást tartott. Címe Forms to ADF: WHy and How. Szerintem maga a demó, ami persze nem letöltheto igazán hasznos volt nem csak Forms háttérrel rendelkezo fejlesztok számára is. Sok rendezvényünkön hintettük az igét ADF-vel kapcsolatban, de átüto penetrációt nem értünk el vele a hazai piacon. Ennek persze több oka is van/lehet. Egyrészrol még mindig azt gondolom (fejlesztoi múltamból fakadóan is), hogy Magyarországon mindenki saját fejlesztésu keretrendszerrel szeret dolgozni. Ezen persze órákat lehet vitatkozni pro és kontra amit akár egy másik bejegyzésben szívesen meg i teszek ha van rá igény. De tény az, hogy már elmúltak azok az idok amikor nem voltak használható keretrendszerek, vagy ha úgy tetszik komponensek. Mégis, megéri manapság lefejleszteni pl: egy üzenetküldo (messaging) alrendszert. Hát szerintem nem, mint ahogy ma már perzisztencia kezelo réteget se állunk neki megírni. Persze ha a projekt elbírja, akkor kifizetodo. Szerencsére egyre több cég ismeri fel és várja el, hogy nem kell neki lefejleszteni egy komplett keretrendszert mikor számos használható van a piacon. Visszatérve az alap kérdésre, az ADF-re azt gondolom, hogy egy fo vissza tartó ero volt a termék érettsége, funkcionalitása és leginkább jövoképe. Nos e tekintetben elismerem, hogy bár több, mint 10 éves múltra tekint vissza korábban voltak buktatók, zsákutcák. Ugyanakkor nem szabad elfelejteni, hogy az Oracle maga ezzel fejleszti új generációs, modern Fusion Appplications (EBusiness Suite, PeopleSoft stb.) alkalmazásait. Tehát több mint ezer(!) fejleszto használja nap, mint nap Java EE alkalmazás fejlesztésére. Nem kevés hangsúlyt fordítva az integrációs, testreszabhatósági képességekre. Olyannyira hangsúlyos eszköz lett, hogy az Oracle teljes middleware portfoliójában visszaköszön. Ami pedig a funkcionalitást, a felhasználói felületet, a produktivitást illeti tényleg jó. Persze az utolsó és egyben legfontosabb szempont kishazánkban az ár. Nos tényleg nincs ingyen. Pontosabban ha az ember vesz egy Weblogic szervert (amúgyis kell a futtatáshoz egy JEE szerver) akkor ingyenesen használható. A termékhez pedig dokumentáció, support, javítás, blogok, közösségi fórumok stb. áll rendelkezésünkre. És akkor most újabb vita indulhat arról, hogy akarunk e fizetni a szerverért. Na errol tényleg fogok indítani egy bejegyzést majd. Mert én azt hiszem, tapasztalatom, hogy itthon összekeverik az open source modelt az ingyenességgel. Azért az alapigazság szerintem még mindig áll: ingyen nincsen semmi. Kérdés csak az, hogy mik az igényeink, elvárásaink.

• Creating block devices for openstack deployment using MAAS and juju (nova-volume deployment)

  Hi, I'm currently trying to get a openstack deployment working by using MAAS with 9 nodes and juju. To do this I found this guide, working with ubuntu 12.04 LTS https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuCloudInfrastructure and followed it as good as I can. After a vigorous amount of trial and error I finally got to the point where I'm supposed to deploy nova-volume using the "custom" config file. However when my node is started and shows up as running in the "juju status" report the service reports the installation failed. I'm trying to install with juju jitsu by the way. I think it has something to do with the following statement in the openstack.cfg file : nova-volume: # This must be a free block device that is writable on the nova-volume host. block-device: "xvdb" overwrite: "true" I did some research and found that (at least I think) this refers to a Xen Virtual Drive/device, and because the device is not present on the node it's being deployed to, the installation fails. What I don't understand is how I am supposed to have such a block device available on a machine which was completely managed by MAAS. Does anyone here have any experience with this and knows of a way to solve this, or am I missing something big here. Some kind of missing link between the MAAS and a separate XEN host ? My MAAS server is ubuntu 12.04LTS Server. All help is welcome. Kind regards, Tom

• Why can't i change the permissions of files I have access to?

  I'm logged into a server as user "ubuntu" and I've got files that look like this: -rw-rw-r-- 1 www-data www-data 33150 2012-06-04 22:17 file-a.png -rw-rw-r-- 1 www-data www-data 36371 2012-06-04 22:15 file-b.png -rw-rw-r-- 1 www-data www-data 41439 2012-06-04 22:16 file-c.png the ubuntu user is a member of the group www-data: > groups unbuntu ubuntu : ubuntu www-data so shouldn't I be able to change other permissions since I have access to the file? I'm not an expert on the user/group stuff ... so this is just perplexing me. I'm trying to run: > chmod o-r * I realize I can do it with sudo, easily, but I'm trying to understand why I can't modify the files without sudo. Thanks for any help!

• Can I use CodeSynthesis XSD (C++/Tree mapping) together with a GPLv3-licensed library?

  Is it possible to write an open source project that uses generated code from CodeSynthesis XSD (C++/Tree) and then link it to a third-party library that is licensed under the GPL version 3? Some background information: CodeSynthesis XSD is licensed under the GPL version 2 but with an extra FLOSS exception (http://www.codesynthesis.com/projects/xsd/FLOSSE). C++ source code generated from CodeSynthesis XSD (C++/Tree) needs to be linked against Xerces (http://xerces.apache.org/xerces-c/) that is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. Update I posted a similar question on the xsd-users mailing list two years ago but I didn't fully understand the answers. In that email thread, I wrote: I think it is the GPL version 3 software that doesn't allow itself be linked to software that can't be "relicensed" to GPL version 3 ( for instance GPL version 2 software ). That would also include XSD as the FLOSS exception doesn't give permission to "relicense" XSD to GPL version 3.

• Switching from Visual Studio to Eclipse [closed]

  I've been using Visual Studio for about 6 years now, which is enough time to know most useful keyboard shortcuts and little features. I recently had to switch to Eclipse and java for school, and now I'm constantly searching for the right keys to press. I have searched around for a definitve guide on this, but I couldn't find any. Here's what I want to know: For any feature in Visual Studio, what is the equivalent feature in Eclipse called and what is it's default keyboard shortcut? Are there any things that work very differently in Eclipse, that one might misunderstand or do wrong at first when switching? Are there features in Visual Studio that Eclipse does not have, and is there a workaround? I hope we can create a guide to make life easier for future developers that have to make this switch. You can answer any of the three questions above (no need to do all three), and multiple per answer if you want. I can't mark questions as community wiki anymore, but I do think that's appropriate here.
