  • Looking for a VPN server that fits my needs

    - by BCS
This question (and some more research) has revealed that OpenVPN isn't for me. So, what are my other options? In particular things I need/want (most important first) are: A server daemon that runs on Linux without kernel modules Clients work from behind NATs and Firewalls. Free/FOSS Support for PPTP, L2TP or L2TP/IPSec PSK/CRT A architecture that makes all accesses equal: if the server is to have access to the VPN, then it must be a client. Just like everyone else. Minimal configuration/state. The first 3 are must haves and the last is a nice to have. The rest I could live without, but then again I could also live with nothing.

  • Easiest way to setup Ubuntu as a VPN server

    - by Sorin Sbarnea
I know there are many tutorials on the net for setting up VPN client and server. I you find one that is simple/short please put a link, I am interested only in the server part. For client, I will use OS X so I prefer a solution that uses L2TP over IPsec or PPTP because I suppose Cisco IPsec would cost something. I don't want to spent too many hours setting it up. You know, maybe someone already made a setup script :)

  • Assistance on setup to Connect an offsite server to the LAN via RRAS VPN - Server 2008 R2

    - by Paul D'Ambra
I have an office LAN protected using a Zyxel Zywall USG 300. I've set up an L2TP/ipsec VPN on that which accepts connections using a shared secret and I've tested this from multiple clients. I have a server offsite and want to set up RRAS to use a persistent connection to the VPN so that it can carry out network jobs even with no one logged in (I'm using it for Micorosft DPM secondary backup). If I create a vpn as if I were setting up a users laptop it can dial in no problem but if I set up a demand dial interface in RRAS it errors. I enable RRAS ticking only demand dial interface (branch office routing) Select network interfaces, right click and choose new demand dial interface Name the VPN ToCompany Select connect using VPN And then L2TP as the vpn type enter the IP address (double-checked for typos!) select Route IP packets on this interface specify static route to remote network as 10.0.0.0/24 with metric of 1 add dial out credentials (again double checked for typos and confirmed with other vpn connections click finish now I right-click on the new interface and choose properties and then the security tab I change Data encryption to optional select only PAP for Authentication (both as per manufacturer of Zywall) click advanced settings against type of vpn and set shared secret then I select the new interface, right-click and choose connect this dials and then errors with either 720 or 811 as the error codes. However, if I create a VPN by going to Network & Sharing center and setting up as if I was creating a VPN from my laptop to the office (say) it dials successfully so I know the VPN settings are correct and the machine can connect to the VPN. Suggests very strongly the problem is how I'm setting up RRAS. Can anyone help?

  • Openswan + xl2tpd connections time out after a while

    - by Halfgaar
I have a non-NATed Openswan+xl2tpd server (Ubuntu 12.04), to which I connect with a Windows 8 behind NAT. The client loses its connection after a while of doing nothing (between 30 and 60 minutes, but I didn't time it). The client doesn't have enabled that it should kill inactive connections. Nor does it ever go into sleep mode. I also tried setting the kill-after-time to 24 hours, but that didn't help. The NAT router behind which the client located is Debian Linux, and its router is a Cisco which connects us directly to the data center where the server is. None of our other connections, like SSH, get dropped with inactivity (because of cheap routers). I did however try turning on the keepalives in /etc/ipsec.conf: config setup (...snip...) nat_traversal=yes force_keepalive=yes keep_alive=10 but that didn't help. As you can see in the config later, dead peer detection's action is clear. That would be a first suggestion to fix, but I need clear, because people will be connecting from everwhere but the kitchen sink. Besides, as I said, in the test setup I have now, I can't see any device killing its connection. (edit: 'restart' also has the same effect) These are of one time it happened: Jul 18 16:18:06 host xl2tpd[1918]: Maximum retries exceeded for tunnel 49070. Closing. • Home and Small to Medium Enterprise network manufacturer choice, Netgear, Linksys or D-Link ?

    - by Kedare
(Please don't close this post, it's a serious post so... Be cool, no trolls please, I need an answer ;p) Hello, I am looking for an alternative to Cisco (too expensive for me !) for semi-pro utilization (at home but with advanced feature (I'm studying in IT)) and in small/medium enterprises. I think I will choose between LinkSys (Including Cisco Small Business), Netgear and D-Link, but I've never really used these products, that what I need is a manufacturer that make "almost" all type of networking equipment (Like Cisco but cheaper..), here are my needs : I need almost all my products to be rackable I need a good warranty (Netgear lifetime waranty rulez!) I need an "unified" network environment I made a little comparison of the characteristics that interest me after hours of search on Internet (based on result found on many websites): (Prices are based on the ldlc-pro.com french website) Hotline/Support Quality: Netgear : Not so bad Linksys : Not so bad D-Link : Poor! Most common Warranty: Netgear : Unlimited Lifetime Warranty! Linksys : Limited 3 years warranty D-Link : Limited 5 years warranty (Unlimited in US but I'm on France :(...) VPN protocols compatibles with routers on endpoint mode: Netgear : Only IPSEC :( Linksys : IPSEC, PPTP, L2TP D-Link : IPSEC, PPTP, L2TP Cheaper 8 ports Gb switch : Netgear : 30€ Linksys : 47€ D-Link : 30€ Cheaper 48 ports + 1Gb uplink(s) administrable switch : Netgear : 263€ Linksys : 630€ D-Link : 600€ Cheaper VPN router : Netgear : 100€ Linksys : 80€ D-Link : 60€ Cheaper rackable switch : Netgear : 50€ Linksys : 87€ D-Link : 50€ Cheaper rackable and administrable switch : Netgear : 120€ Linksys : 370€ D-Link : 171€ Netgear and D-Link are in the same range of price, where Linksys is more expensives. I've searched for some other criteria ( the full comparison is here, in french with shop/source links: http://forums.jeuxonline.info/showthread.php?t=1072280 ) and made a final score for each manufacturer : SCORE including IP camera sub-score: Netgear : 6.2/10 Linksys : 7.3/10 D-Link : 7.0/10 SCORE excluding IP camera sub-score: Netgear : 6.9/10 Linksys : 7.0/10 D-Link : 6.7/10 On both case, Linksys wins. So here is my little comparison, but because I've never really used these stuffs, I need your help to make a decision on witch manufacturer choose for both my personnal and corporate use. So here are the questions : What manufacturer do you recommend me (Not cisco (except Small business)) ? Why ? Have you called the call center of the customer support of one of these manufacturer ? How it was ? Did you had problems or bad experiences with these equipments ? Any other advices ? ;) Thank you !

  • Connect Windows 7 to VPN hosted on Mac OS X Server 10.6

    - by Anriëtte Combrink
Hi there We have a Mac OS X Server setup to be a VPN as well, we also have a freelancer who wants log in to the Mac OS X VPN on our server, but he keeps getting errors. I have tested the VPN with our Macs, and they connect fine using Snow Leopard. Our VPN type is L2TP over IPSec and we use a shared secret instead of a certificate. Does anyone have any pointers for me?

  • Mac - Windows VPN

    - by user61652
Hi, I am trying to setup a secure vpn server (Ipsec l2tp) on windows so I can connect to it using my mobile mac or any other windows pc. It seems it is quite a hassle to do this. Does anyone have any good suggestions, maybe a software or open source. Note that I have not yet encountered a piece of ware that can run on both windows and mac. I would ideally prefer a single UI rather than learn two. BR

  • OpenSwan + xl2tpd VPN: How can I share Internet connection

    - by Michael
I have an OpenSwan IPSec + L2TP VPN on Linux setup working from off of my server so I can connect to it from my laptop (roadwarrior setup). I am able to connect to the VPN remotely just fine, however the internet connection is not shared. I'm assuming there is some sort of masquerading I am supposed to be doing, but I have no idea how to go about doing that (iptables?). Any help getting this working so I can essentially use my VPN connection as a proxy would be great. Thanks

  • set proxy for vpn server on ubuntu server 12.4

    - by Morteza Soltanabadiyan
I have a vpn server with HTTPS, L2TP , OPENVPN , PPTP. i want to set proxy in the server so all connection that comes from vpn clients use the proxy that i set in my server. I made a bash script file for it , but proxy not working. gsettings set org.gnome.system.proxy mode 'manual' gsettings set org.gnome.system.proxy.http enabled true gsettings set org.gnome.system.proxy.http host 'cproxy.anadolu.edu.tr' gsettings set org.gnome.system.proxy.http port 8080 gsettings set org.gnome.system.proxy.http authentication-user 'admin' gsettings set org.gnome.system.proxy.http authentication-password 'admin' gsettings set org.gnome.system.proxy use-same-proxy true export http_proxy=http://admin:[email protected]:8080 export https_proxy=http://admin:[email protected]:8080 export HTTP_PROXY=http://admin:[email protected]:8080 export HTTPS_PROXY=http://admin:[email protected]:8080 Now , I don't know what to do to make a global proxy for server and all vpn clients use it automatically.

  • VPN networking issue

    - by DuncanDavies
I have 2 servers hosted in the cloud. One an application server, one a VPN server, both running Win2008. Both have a local IP address assigned by DHCP in different network subnets, 10.227.55.0 (VPN) and 10.231.5.0 (App Server). These servers can ping each other. My VPN client connects in to the VPN server (using a L2TP connection on a Win7 client). It is assigned an IP Address from the VPN server's static pool (the VPN server takes 192.168.100.1, the client is given 192.168.100.2). The client can ping both the 192.168.100.1 address of the VPN server, and its 'local' IP address (10.227.55.X). What the client can't do is ping the App Server. How can I configure routing so that my client can access the App Server, without hard-coding any of the DHCP IP addresses anywhere? thanks Duncan

  • Juniper Networks SRX240 as a office router?

    - by Jordan Mendelson
We're a small (7 person) fast growing startup who just got our new office and we're having a 100 Mbps line installed from Cogent. I'm not familiar with Juniper devices, however the equivalent Cisco appears to be rather expensive. Features we'd like: Offsite VPN access (PPTP or L2TP IPsec) - something Mac compatible IPv6 support NAT - ideally supporting multiple outside addresses mapped to VLANs DHCP DNS forwarding would be nice QoS to keep our SIP phones happy (managed through RingCentral) VLANs for guest/internal The device is going to be connected to a set of SIP phones as well as two Ruckus 7962s for wireless access. Eventually I'd like to connect it to a Juniper ESX switch as we grow. Would a Juniper SRX240 handle this ok?

  • Configure VPN to access remote LAN network on Windows7

    - by PiotrK
Situation: I have two Windows7 machines (PC and laptop). I've set PC as VPN server and laptop as VPN client using default built-in W7 network tools. I've disabled use default gateway in remote network on client machine, so client don't try to route all communication through VPN. I've routed port 1723 (TCP/UDP) on NAT to my server and enabled IPSec/PPTP/L2TP passthrough I've put my laptop in indepedent network (basically I've connected it via 3G network), connected to VPN server and checked ipconfig /all I've get: IP Address: 192.168.1.101 Mask: 255.255.255.255 Gateway: (none) LAN mask in server LAN network is 255.255.255.0 - I am surely missing something obvious, but Google doesn't give me any good advices; How can I access local LAN network from remote VPN client? How can I access local shared documents?

  • Edimax wireless router is not providing DNS services correctly

    - by Nathan Fellman
I have an Edimax router that is set up to connect to the internet via L2TP on cable, and on the LAN side it's set up as a DHCP server. The DHCP server gives correct IP addresses, but it sets itself up as the DNS server. However, it doesn't provide the DNS service. I am sure that it's a problem with the router, because I have two computers on the network with the same problem. I see that on the WAN side it gets correct DNS addresses from the ISP, so I'd expect the router to either pass these addresses through to the DHCP clients, or to serve the DNS requests itself by forwarding them to the ISP's DNS. However, it apparently does neither, and there is no DNS. I switched from ADSL to cable last week. On ADSL it connected using PPPoE, and the DNS worked fine. What can be the problem here?

  • Removing (Presumably) Extraneous Network Adapters from Device Manager (eg WAN Miniport)

    - by Synetech inc.
Can anyone shed some light on the default items in the Network Adapters branch of the Windows Device Manager? In addition to the network card, there are always a bunch of other things that I cannot find any useful information on such as RAS Asynch Adapter and all the WAN Miniports (IKEv2, IP(v6), L2TP, Network Monitor, PPPOE, PPTP, SSTP). I would like to trim it down and uninstall whatever possible but cannot find out exactly what these items are responsible for (and therefore whether or not they are needed on my system). Most of the pages found with Google are either people trying to fix an error with such an item or someone asking what it is and being given an unhelpful, pat response like “just leave them alone” or “they’re necessary”. I highly doubt that is the case and I’m certain that at least some items can be removed because even if they become necessary in the future they can be added again (for example installing Network Monitor or Protowall reinstalls the miniport drivers anyway).

  • Windows 2003 server RRAS on VPC

    - by Saif
I'm trying to setup a L2TP VPN server(to give user access on to all my VPN instance) on a Windows 2003 instance running on my VPC. While trying to enable RRAS I'm getting error, "less than two network interfaces were detected on this machine". Eventually it's because there's only one network interface available, the which has private IP. I have elastic IP assigned to this instance as well. But RRAS can't see this. What should I do to RRAS to be able to see the interface with elastic IP?

  • Unable to connect with PPTP (From Windows 8 to Ubuntu 12.10)

    - by jaja
I'm trying to connect using PPTP to my VPS. At first, I got the problem that my connection (Wlan, which is what I use to connect to the Internet) goes "limited" (I can't connect to the Internet) when I connect to the VPN. Then, I used to get some long message, something like you might be trying using L2TP. Then now it's back again to the "limited" problem. What's the solution to that problem? One thing I'm not sure of is what I put as my local IP address in "sudo nano /etc/pptpd.conf" Is it 127.0.0.1? I'm following this tutorial: http://thesinclairs.gotdns.com/blog/set-up-a-pptp-vpn-on-ubuntu-server/

  • Create True VLAN over RAS

    - by Bigbohne
Hi, I was wondering if it's possible. I want to create a virtual network over RAS using Windows Server 2003. The Client should be able to connect to the server using L2TP and should get an IP Adress from a private Range (lets say 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.200 and a subnetmask of 255.255.255.0). Now each client connected to the server should be able to ping another connected client. e.g. 192.168.1.123 <- 192.168.1.145 via RAS via the server. Is this possible? And ... how ? best regards, andre

  • IPSec VPN IP addresses

    - by Randomblue
I have an IPSec VPN on my Windows 7 machine (all using the native Windows 7 gateway). The host I am connecting to has different ISAKMP "Phase 1" and "Phase 2" IP addresses. As I understand, the Phase 1 address is that of the IPsec endpoint, to which I can connect just fine. The Phase 2 address is found in their "crypto map", and the addresses need to match. At the moment, both my Phase 1 and Phase 2 addresses are configured the same. On my side, I get the error "Error 791: The L2TP connection attempt failed because security policy for the connection was not found" How can I configure the Phase 2 IP address for my Windows 7 IPSec VPN to be different to the IPSec endpoint address?

  • OpenSwan IPsec connection drops after 30 seconds

    - by drcore
I'm trying to connection from my Linux Mint 16 box to a CloudStack server. Building up the connection works (pings work across the tunnel). However 30 seconds later the IPsec tunnel gets terminated out of the blue. What could cause this consistent behaviour and how to fix it? • Alternate way to connect a vpn through a MIFI

    - by questor
This has gotten to be a major problem at our company and depending on who I ask, the problem either does not really exist (mfr. and vendor) or is insoluble ( according to most users including techs who know how to prove their point). The problem involves getting a normal Windows 7 system to connect to a normal Server 2008 R2 Server over a cellular router (usually called a Mifi). A very few brands/models appear to work but the majority cannot make the connection. Since it is a cellular device, there are many variables that come into play and I wondered if anyone had ever found a consistent way to either make one work or else prove to the providers that their equipment was at fault. They all specifically state “VPN use” on the sales brochures. But few if any work. And those that do are not reliable. From a standpoint of pure knowledge, I just wondered if anyone knew the real reason why they fail? Pptp, L2tp, IPsec doesn’t matter. I have not tried Shrew or OpenVPN and am using strictly MS Windows protocols. Plenty of Google Searches back up my complaints but none seem to be any closer to knowing "why" they fail, just that they do. This is a "quest for knowledge"question. I don't expect a solution. Just a reason for the problem if anyone has any ideas.

  • Cisco ASA: How to route PPPoE-assigned subnet?

    - by Martijn Heemels
We've just received a fiber uplink, and I'm trying to configure our Cisco ASA 5505 to properly use it. The provider requires us to connect via PPPoE, and I managed to configure the ASA as a PPPoE client and establish a connection. The ASA is assigned an IP address by PPPoE, and I can ping out from the ASA to the internet, but I should have access to an entire /28 subnet. I can't figure out how to get that subnet configured on the ASA, so that I can route or NAT the available public addresses to various internal hosts. My assigned range is: 188.xx.xx.176/28 The address I get via PPPoE is 188.xx.xx.177/32, which according to our provider is our Default Gateway address. They claim the subnet is correctly routed to us on their side. How does the ASA know which range it is responsible for on the Fiber interface? How do I use the addresses from my range? To clarify my config; The ASA is currently configured to default-route to our ADSL uplink on port Ethernet0/0 (interface vlan2, nicknamed Outside). The fiber is connected to port Ethernet0/2 (interface vlan50, nicknamed Fiber) so I can configure and test it before making it the default route. Once I'm clear on how to set it all up, I'll fully replace the Outside interface with Fiber. • VPN on OSX disconnects after precisely 2 minutes and 30 seconds on specific network

    - by Tyilo
When connecting to my own VPN server on a specific network, called public-network, my Mac disconnects the VPN connection after 2 minutes and 30 seconds. I have performed several tests and this is the result: It works fine until the 2:30 mark It doesn't matter which Mac I use, it still disconnects It doesn't matter which client I use, all of the following does the same: OSX system client, HMA! Pro VPN and Shimo It doesn't matter which protocol I use, at least all of these protocols does the same: PPTP, OpenVPN and L2TP over IPSec The same thing happens using my own VPN server and HMA!'s VPN server. All other clients (Windows/iPhone) can use any of these VPN servers and protocols without problem on public-network On OSX, all the protocols, clients and servers works fine on any other network So it seems that it is the combination of OSX, VPN & public-network that causes this. This is the syslog from my VPN server, when the disconnection happens: Feb 2 12:04:32 raspberrypi pptpd[31400]: CTRL: EOF or bad error reading ctrl packet length.
