    Why keep this question open and others like it open which basically asks how long does it take to learn a programming language? Yet I ask a valid question which basically asks how esteemed is a mathematics degree from the UK open university and would software employers hire whilst you are the course.. and it gets closed I love the advice I get from this site and I appreciate the fact that Software Technicians of all types use this site, but it's a bit shallow if you can't ask a question with a little bit of the real world involved

Order of HTML meta tags I'm new to websites in general (which is why I'm starting on blogger) and am just curious as to which tags I should be using in my posts? My posts generally include a title relevant to the keyword of my blog, an image, a video, my content, and a link to my twitter. I don't really use any tags and someone mentioned that they may help for SEO. So I figured I would ask for some advice from people who know what they are doing. EDIT I apologize for not clarifying, I meant tags such as: Header tag: <h1>This is my title</h1> Image tags with attributes: <img src="keyword_image.jpg" width="100" height="78" ALT="this_shows_examples"> What other tags and attributes are ones I should use for a well put together website and SEO?

    I come from a C# background and would like to learn Java. Programming and Java as a language are not a problem. What is bewildering to me is the sheer amount of various choices in "Java environment" - Ivy, Maven, Ant, JAXB, Glassfish, JBoss, Struts, Spring are just some of the names that I keep seeing. I am looking for "who is who" and "who works together" beginner's guide. Is there such a book? Something similar?

  • How should I handle search engines auto-correcting the spelling of a site's name?

    A client's site and company is called 'Tranin Communications' (Tranin is her last name). It ranks well in searches for her name but rather poorly in searches for the name of her site/company. I realized that this is largely due to* search engines (Google especially) assuming that the query was misspelled and automatically including results for both 'train communications' and 'communications training'. Both of those queries yield many high-ranking sites that completely drown out hers. Sometimes Google even shows results for 'communications training' instead of 'tranin communications', hiding her site altogether. Is there a way to report an incorrect auto-correction to Google or something I can do to discourage this behavior (e.g. a meta tag)? My searches have come up cold, any suggestions would be appreciated. *I've come to this conclusion because her site ranks very highly when the same queries are put in quotes.

  • How should I land my next consulting gig? [closed]

    For the last couple of years, I've been working on speculative projects, expanding my skillset with side work, and paying the bills while having a blast consulting for startups. However, for a number of personal reasons, I need to spend the next 6-9 months maximizing my cash income. I want to put this into effect starting in early August. So that means I have one month to put the necessary client list/portfolio/resume together to start making this happen. As a programmer, I am very proficient in building Django web apps. I can write the necessary SQL, python, javascript, and css to build every part of a Django app, and then do the system administration necessary to deploy on AWS using EC2. I can also rig up a CDN to work seemlessly with the app using S3 and Cloudfront. I have built GIS applications using GeoDjango and PostGIS, and I have constructed social video apps by implementing Encoding.com as a service to prepare raw video files for consumption on the web. I am also moderately proficient in programming PHP, Java, and C#. I have built web apps in PHP, and desktop apps in Java and C#. I have dabbled with Android applications and iPhone apps, but nothing I would show off. I have experience doing SEO, social media marketing, and content marketing. Many of my clients have needed their apps promoted after they were built, and I was always happy to oblige when I could. I have also worked with biometrics technology including fingerprints for government contractors. This was as much a business analyst role as it was a programming gig, as I had to help answer RFPs, make checklists, and work around reems and reems of regulations to build applications that met very large bureaucratic requirements. I only have two real requirements for my next gig(s): 1) Work remotely. I live in North East Ohio, and I don't plan on leaving, but I wouldn't mind traveling one or two weeks out of every month to service clients who need on-site help. 2) $60.00hr-$∞ USD contracting rate. So what should I do for the next 30 days to achieve this? Should I target some large company and learn the requisite buzzwords to impress them? Should I learn some new language or technology? Polish some skill that I already have? Should I build something using my current skillset, or with some new technology? Should I put a website for my consultancy together to market myself? Should I do that using latest technology x, y, and z? Or should I just slap something up on Tumblr? I'm willing to do anything (moral) over the next 4 weeks to put myself into a position to maximize my income, and I'm open to all and every idea Programmers users may have. Let me hear them.

    Whats a best practice for creating websites do to the fact that i need to enter "ö" within the content/title/meta. Should I spell it without, and just use a "normal" character or do i put in this code everywhere. or do i spell it half the time with and half the time without. whats the best practice for seo? Google takes into account user intent. Which makes things complicated(in my mind). The user will be searching without the "special characters" but because of the whole "user intent" thing, I don't know the best practice for this situation is. Should I use a mix of both spellings? Should I use the special characters in anchortext/headers/title/metadescription?

    Suppose I'm starting my business my major is computer services like: graphic , programming, computer repair , networking and.... now the question is, what do you recommend for a better ranking? should i have a separate domain for each of these field or i can have them all in different pages/categories in one website? my preferred CMS system is Wordpress. and...do you recommend me using keywords in domain name even if it becomes hard to remember, meaningless and long?   • Redisigning an old site, structure change etc

    I have an old site built in 2006, it has around 200 pages and 500 pictures. Every single page is of course indexed as well as images. It is very well ranked for targeted keywords and I receive good amount of SEO traffic (I guess that's due the various campaigns, branding, ppc, etc..) Problem: Site has outdated design, pages and images have not so proper names, there are no heading and alt tags, it was built in tables, inline CSS etc.. Goal: Complete redisign site, use divs, change file names, add proper meta data, alt tags etc.. Question: How this can affect current SEO positions? I will redirect (301) every single page to the new one, build site map, but what to do with images? Do I need to redirect them also? Any other suggestion?

Since it is hard sometimes to get games to work in ubuntu (specially the new ones) i decided to use Windows mostly for games and ubuntu for work applications, such as programming, the adobe suite and whatnot.     I was wondering if anybody can point to a post, pdf, or excerpt of a book containing the rules for C++ variable life-times and best practices for passing and returning function parameters. Things like when to pass by value and by reference, how to share ownership, avoid unnecessary copies, etc. This is not for a particular problem of mine, I've been programming in C++ for long enough to know the rules by instinct, but it is something that a lot of newcomers to the language stumble with, and I would be glad to point them to such a thing.

I am working on customizing how my results appear in Google as best as possible. I have learned about the meta tags to customize the text summary. However, I have some hierarchical parts to my website. When a result appears related to the "tip-of-the-iceberg", I would like to show links related to the "child" pages.     Sometimes I go for what I find interesting instead of what is considered right. Having this attitude has been educational and it has let me produce work that I'm exceptionally proud of but it has also made me miss deadlines and disappoint people. Sometimes I think I'm this way because I don't want to "break" my curiosity. I'm afraid that if I ignore it I may gradually lose it. Do you have any advice for me?
