• Learning low latency C++ and Java?

  I'm currently in a role where I dont get to write any C++ or Java. However, the role is good because provides me with exposure to the business side (i'm interested in finance). Eventually I would like to get into high frequency trading infrastructure. Therefore, outside of work hours i'd like to maximise the knowledge I can gain about high performance Java and C++. I already have the Java Performance Tuning book, which is ok but not impressive. Can people recommend anymore latency blogs/books/websites for learning about making C++/C/Java or even Unix very fast? Or perhaps making the network parts of the OS (if re-writing Unix components) faster? EDIT: Or perhaps we could make this THE thread for advice on writing fast code

• Project Management Techniques (high level)

  Our software dev team is currently using kanban for our development lifecycles, and, from the reasonably short experience of a few months, I think it's going quite well (certainly compared to a few months ago when we didn't really have a methodology). Our team, however, is directed to do work defined by project managers (not software project managers, just general business), and they're using the PMBOK methodology. Question is, how does a traditional methodology like PMBOK, Prince2 etc fit with a lean software development methodology like kanban or scrum? Is it just wasting everyone's time as all the requirements are effectively drawn up to start with (although inevitably changed along the way)?

• Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • Duplicate domain names - .net and .com Create separate pages, or redirect?

  In a SEO point of view: This website has a good amount of traffic for a local business, but also ships some merchandise. While the .net domain (registered first) is associated with the local busines (google places, maps, etc...) the .com domain only redirects to the .net domain. Is it good, bad or okay to create a different page for the domain .com for example, that would be pretty simple, but would link to the 10 different categories of products that this company sells? I know links are good, so there's that, but what else is good, or bad? Thanks in advance!

Unique characteristics of software projects also makes the risk management process unique. Lots of issues in a project might lead it to unacceptable delay or failure to deliver business value. They might even make a complete disaster in the project. What are the deadliest risk factors in a software project? How to analyze, prevent and handle them? Particularly, I'm interested in the issues that you can detect from the beginning and you should keep an eye on (for example, you might be told about a third-party API that the current application uses and lacks documentation). • SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

  Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released. • LightView: JavaFX 2 real-time visualizer for GlassFish

  Adam Bien launched LightFish, a light-weight monitoring and visualization application for GlassFish. It comes with a introduction and a screencast to get you started. The tool provides monitoring information about threads and memory (such as heap size, thread count, peak thread count), transactions (commits and rollbacks), HTTP sessions, JDBC sessions, and even "paranormal activity". In a recently released first part of a tri-part article series at OTN, Adam explains how REST services can be exposed as bindable set of properties for JavaFX. The article titled "Enterprise side of JavaFX" shows how a practical combination of REST and JavaFX together. It explains how read-only and dynamic properties can be created. • How does a government development shop transition to developing open source solutions?

  Our shop has identified several reasons why releasing our software solutions to the open source community would be a good idea. However, there are several reasons from a business stand point why converting our shop to open source would be questioned. I need help from anyone out there who has gone through this transition, or is in the process. Specifically a government entity. About our shop: - We develop and support web and client applications for the local law enforcement community. - We are NOT a private company, rather a public sector entity Some questions that tend to come about when we have this discussion are: We're a government agency, so isn't our code already public? How do we protect ourselves from being 'hacked' if someone looks into our code? (There are obvious answers to this question like making sure you don't hard code passwords, etc. However, the discussion needs to consider an audience of executives who are very security conscience.)

• SSL certificates - best bang for your buck [closed]

  I am in the process of setting up an online store. This is the first project I have attempted which will require a good level of security, so I recognise that an decent SSL certificate is a must. My current (albeit admittedly basic) understanding of the options are: DV SSL - more or less pointless, as provides no verification. OV SSL - better, as provides a basic level of organisational verification. EV SSL - 'better, full' verification, but much more expensive. As this is a new business venture, and budgets are tight, which option provides the best bang for my buck? I have read questions such as EV SSL Certificates - does anyone care? which suggest that EV certificates are a bit of a con. Does this mean that OV certificates offer better value for money, especially for new businesses with shallow pockets?

A big part of the product is allowing its users the ability to create queries with SQL to pull in business information from their back end databases. I know the very basics of SQL and need to spend some time getting a better grasp on SQL. I have the tutorial from w3schools on my ToDo list, but was hoping to get some answers that point me to good resources for learning SQL. I have no preference - I can buy a book (SQL For Dummies?), or online resources, online videos, audio, etc.

• How to deal with "software end-of-life" situations?

  When a vendor declares that they no longer intend to provide any support or services to a piece of software (and stated the intent to exit the business - offering no upgrade paths), and stated that customers must pay a nominal fee in order to have the existing data exported, what kind of recourse do programmers/customers have? Things I can think of: Need to purchase spare hardware and set up a spare environment on which the software can continue to operate. Various data export methods which do not require vendor involvement. (For example, screen scraping, printing to image followed by re-scanning, etc) Parallel systems where staff will duplicate the old data into a new system manually or semi-automatically Legal means, in case the vendor is in financial trouble Any other ideas? Assuming that there is no "circumvention" involved (no DRM, no DMCA), is data recovery or reverse engineering legal/acceptable?

• Forking a repo on GitHub but allowing new issues on the fork

  I have previously forked other people's repos on GitHub, and I have noticed that issues stay with the original repo, and that I can't file issues on the forked repo. I now have the following task. I am working for a small business where development was being done by one of the principals on his personal account. He has amicably left the project, and we would like to migrate that project away from his personal account to a new "role" account on GitHub. I would naturally fork the repo, in order to preserve the code history, but then I'll end up with a repo where we can't file new issues, which is quite undesirable. How can I make a copy of this original repo into our new account, ideally still preserving code history, but be able to file new issues within this new account?
