• Sam Abraham To Speak At The LI .Net User Group on June 3rd, 2010

- by Sam Abraham
As you might know, I lived and worked on LI, NY for 11 years before relocating to South Florida. As I will be visiting my family who still live there in the first week of June, I couldn't resist reaching out to Dan Galvez, LI .Net User Group Leader, and asking if he needed a speaker for June's meeting. Apparently the stars were lined up right and I am now scheduled to speak at my "home" group on June 3rd, which I am pretty excited about. Here is a brief abstract of my talk and speaker bio. What's New in MVC2 We will start by briefly reviewing the basics of the Microsoft MVC Framework. Next, we will look at the new features introduced in the latest and greatest MVC2. Many new enhancements were introduced to both the MS MVC Framework and to VS2010 to improve developers' experience and reduce development time. We will be talking about new MVC2 features such as: Model Validation, Areas and Template Helpers. We will also discuss the new built-in MVC project templates that ship with VS2010. About the Speaker Sam Abraham is a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS ASP.Net 3.5) He currently lives in South Florida where he leads the West Palm Beach .Net User Group (www.fladotnet.com) and actively participates in various local .Net Community events as organizer and/or technical speaker. Sam is also an active committee member on various initiatives at the South Florida Chapter of the Project Management Institute (www.southfloridapmi.org). Sam finds his passion in leveraging latest and greatest .Net Technologies along with proven Project Management practices and methodologies to produce high quality, cost-competitive software. Sam can be reached through his blog: http://www.geekswithblogs.net/wildturtle

• ArcSig Meeting at 04/20/2010 with Sam Abraham

- by Rainer
Sam Abraham gave a great presentation, “MVC2 – Do it your way in VS 2010”, at our monthly ArcSig meeting on 04/20/2010 at Global Response. The interest in Sam’s talk was immense, we almost run out of seats. The audience got an in-depth view and walkthrough of the Model View Controller functionality in Visual Studio 2010 with detailed code examples. Sam answered many user questions about practical applications in MVC. Free soft drinks and pizza kept the participants energized during the whole presentation and a raffle of books and software completed this meeting, with a preview about the upcoming meetings and events in May and June. Thank you to Sam for the exciting presentation, and to the Shooster family for hosting us this month at Global Response! Posted: Rainer Habermann ArcSig Site Director CIO @ Global Response

• LI .Net User Group June 3rd, 2010 Meeting with Sam Abraham

- by Sam Abraham
It was a pleasure seeing old friends and meeting new ones at the LI .Net User Group Meeting on Thursday June 3rd 2010. I was very impressed as more than 35 developers were present which highlights the buzz MVC is creating with its latest release. We covered an introduction to MVC then went on to discuss new features in MVC2. I enjoyed the good dialogue among the group as we discussed how MVC can fit side-by-side with an existing WebForms paradigm and how MVC Support for TDD can dramatically shift Architecture practices as we know them. Looking forward to meeting you all next time I am on the Island. Below are some photos of the event. --Sam Abraham Site Director - West Palm Beach .Net User Group

• NuGet, ASP.Net MVC and WebMatrix - DB Coders Cafe - March 1st, 2011 With Sam Abraham

- by Sam Abraham
I am scheduled to share on NuGet (http://nuget.codeplex.com/) at the Deerfield Beach Coder’s Café on March 1st, 2011. My goal for this talk is to present demos and content covering how to leverage this new neat utility to easily “package” .Net-based binaries or tools and share them with others, who in-turn, can just as easy reference and readily use that same package in their Visual Studio 2010 .Net projects. Scott Hanselman has recently blogged in great detail on creating NuGet packages. For hosting a local NuGet package repository, Jon Galloway has a nice article update with a complete PowerShell script to simplify downloading the default feed packages which can be accessed here. Information on my upcoming talk can be found at: http://www.fladotnet.com/Reg.aspx?EventID=514 The following is a brief abstract of the talk: NuGet (formerly known as NuPack) is a free, open source developer focused package management system for the .NET platform intent on simplifying the process of incorporating third party libraries into a .NET application during development. NuGet is a member of the ASP.NET Gallery in the Outercurve Foundation. In this session we will: Discuss the concept, vision and goal behind NuGet See NuGet in action within an ASP.Net MVC project Look at the NuGet integration in Microsoft WebMatrix Create a NuGet package for our demo library Explore the NuGet Project site Configure a NuGet package feed for a local network Solicit attendees input and feedback on the tool Look forward to meeting you all there. --Sam

• Sam Abraham To Speak about MVC & MVVM at InterClick on May 19th

- by Sam Abraham
My next speaking engagement will be taking place at InterClick in Boca Raton, FL on Wednesday May 19th 2010. Here is a quick abstract of what I will be blabbing about: MVC & MVVM are two of many buzzwords under the Architecture Spotlight as means of achieving true separation of concerns between data, business logic and UI layers. In this session, we will be discussing the basic concepts of Microsoft MVC and demonstrating the ease of creating a new MVC project and related Unit Tests within VS2010. We will then move to introduce MVVM as a design paradigm and incorporating that into an MS MVC application structure. Next, we will take a look at MVVM in the context of a sample Silverlight application. Throughout our talk we will be demonstrating various features of the latest and greatest VS2010. • Mac OS X roaming profile from Samba with OpenLDAP backend on Ubuntu 11.10

- by Sam Hammamy
I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. I get the following in system.log Sep 21 06:09:15 Sams-MacBook-Pro.local SecurityAgent[265]: User info context values set for sam Sep 21 06:09:15 Sams-MacBook-Pro.local authorizationhost[270]: in pam_sm_authenticate(): Got user: sam Sep 21 06:09:15 Sams-MacBook-Pro.local authorizationhost[270]: in pam_sm_authenticate(): Got ruser: (null) Sep 21 06:09:15 Sams-MacBook-Pro.local authorizationhost[270]: in pam_sm_authenticate(): Got service: authorization Sep 21 06:09:15 Sams-MacBook-Pro.local authorizationhost[270]: in od_principal_for_user(): no authauth availale for user. Any help is appreciated, because I'm banging my head against the wall at this point. By the way, I intend to create a blog on my vps just for this, and create an install script in python that people can download so no one has to go through what I've had to go through this week :) After some sleep I am going to try to login from a windows machine and report back here. Thanks Sam

• Reloading an external element (via jQuery's .load) without impact on same-named host elements on sam

- by Martin Pescador
Hello together! [First, I'm an absolute beginner. I tried to express myself as good as I could - please correct me on any issue... Now: I have the following problem:] I am loading a div element, which class always is ".gallery" from a couple of pages (in this example "the page index.php?page=orange") into another page's div (in this case with the ID "orange") using the following code: $("#orange").load("http://example.com/index.php?page=orange .gallery"); Each div.gallery I load in, is a set of a few images. Between them, you can switch (there are "previous"- and "next"-links in ".imgnavi"). $(".imgnavi a").live("click", function(ev) { ev.preventDefault(); ev.stopPropagation(); $(".gallery").load($(this).attr("href")); return false; }) What happens now: Loading the different div.gallery into the new page is no problem, but as soon as I start to navigate inside those divs (each div is a little gallery, where you can switch between images), the div.gallery I am switching in is suddenly loaded into EVERY other div.gallery in the document! How do I prevent that?

• Test data generators / quickest route to generating solid, non-repetitive, but not-real database sam

- by Jamo
I need to build a quick feasibility test / proof-of-concept of a remote database for a client, that will be populated with mostly-typical Company and People data (names, addresses, etc); 150K records or so. The sample databases mentioned here were helpful: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/57068/good-databases-with-sample-data ...but, I'd like to be able to generate sample data like this easily on less-typical datasets as well. Anyone have any recommendations for off-the-shelf (or off-the-web) solutions?

• Mapping an amazon server to a domain name registered with name.com

- by S4M
I have an amazon S3 web server and a domain name registered in name.com (the name is sam-experiments.com). I am trying to have a static page hosted on the amazon web server to be displayed on http://www.sam-experiments.com On the web server side, my bucket name is 'www.sam-experiments.com', and it links to here: http://www.sam-experiments.com.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ On name.com, I added a new record with the followin characteristics: Record Type: CNAME Record Host: www.sam-experiments.com Record Answer: www.sam-experiments.com.s3.amazonaws.com. (as specified in the documentation here: http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/VirtualHosting.html#VirtualHostingCustomURLs) TTL: 300 However, nothing gets displayed on www.sam-experiments.com, and I am not able to find what I am doing wrong. I really would appreciate some tip. Thanks! Note: I already posted this question in stackoverflow, but didnt get any answer, so I thought posting here may be more appropriate.

• Mac OS X behind OpenLDAP and Samba

Thanks Sam

• YUI Calendar: how does it load the Sam's Skin CSS?

- by dound
I'm using YUI 2's calendar in YUI 3. How does it load Sam's skin CSS? I didn't manually include it (though it seems like I should so the user can download it in the one request I make to the combo loader for css). Strangely, I don't see it being downloaded nor do I see it in the JS files themselves. I must be overlooking it. This is how I'm loading the CSS and JS now:
...
...
... // YUI().use('yui2-calendar', function(Y) { var YAHOO = Y.YUI2; var cal = new YAHOO.widget.Calendar("cal",{navigator:true,mindate:'1/1/2000'); cal.render(); // ... Edit: I want to make a few minor changes to the default sam skin. What is the best way to do that? I answered this part of my question. If I wrap the calendar in an extra div, then specifying CSS rules which include that div as part of the selector makes the rule more specific so the browser uses it over Sam's skin. Rough example: ...
