  • Using jquery, what is the simplest function to post some json data and process a returned json respo

    When users click on an element in my webpage, I would like to call a javascript function that reads the values of a few text boxes on the page, wraps their contents as json where the keys are the ids for the text boxes and the values are the contents of each text box, and then posts the resulting json to a url. I would then like the same function to expect back a json response and call another javascript function with the returned json data. Question: What is the best way to write the javascript function to create a json structure from html elements, post the json with jquery, and call another javascript function with the resulting json response from the server?

  • Getting Query Parameters in Javascript

    I find myself needing to get query parameters that are passed into a web app on the URL quite often. At first I wrote a function that creates an associative array (aka object) with all of the parameters as keys and returns it. But then I was looking at the revealing module pattern, a nice javascript design pattern designed to hide private functions, and came up with a way to do this without even calling a function. What I came up with was this nice little object that automatically initializes itself into the same associative array that the function call did previously. // Creates associative array (object) of query params var QueryParameters = (function() {     var result = {};     if (window.location.search)     {         // split up the query string and store in an associative array         var params = window.location.search.slice(1).split("&");         for (var i = 0; i < params.length; i++)         {             var tmp = params[i].split("=");             result[tmp[0]] = unescape(tmp[1]);         }     }     return result; }()); Now all you have to do to get the query parameters is just reference them from the QueryParameters object.     Which types of learning resources do you find the most helpful, for which kinds of learning and/or perhaps at specific times? Some examples of types of learning you could consider: When starting to integrate a new SDK inside an existing codebase When learning a new framework without having to integrate legacy code When digging deeper into an already-used SDK that you may not know very well yet For example - (video) tutorials are usually very easy to follow and tells a story from beginning to end to get results, but will nearly always assume starting from scratch or a previous tutorial. Therefore such a resource is useful for quick learning if you don't have legacy code around, but less so if you have to search for the best-fit to the code you already have. SDK Documentation on the other hand is well-structured but does not tell a story. It is more difficult to get to a specific larger result with documentation alone, but it is a better fit when you do have legacy code around and are searching for perhaps non-obvious ways of employing the SDK or library. Are there other forms of resources that you find useful, such as interactive training?

Tunneling refers to any abuse of HTTP that masks or misrepresents a message’s intent and undermines the protocol’s transparency. A REST API must not compromise its design by misusing HTTP’s request methods in an effort to accommodate clients with limited HTTP vocabulary. Always make proper use of the HTTP methods as specified by the rules in this section. [highlights by me] But then a lot of frameworks use tunneling to expose REST interfaces via HTML forms, since <form> knows only about GET and POST.   • Any good tutorials all this web programming stuff for a GUI person? [closed]

    For some reason, I am having a hard time understanding all this web programming stuff--from AJAX to JSON, etc. I've got plenty of experience programming GUIs. I'm currently working on a project in Python, and I thought that maybe I could just use PyJS (since it's GWT for Python, it uses an API that's very familiar to experienced GUI programmers like myself) to compile it with a Javascript interface on top, but alas, the compiler gave me a spectacular failure. It's obviously not meant to handle much of any Python beyond itself, and some of the core Python library. It would have been nice if it could, but I will admit, it would have been the lazy way to do it. I tried to learn Django, but for some reason, I'm just having a hard time understanding the tutorial on their website, and what it's all doing. Maybe it's not the best framework to learn, perhaps? Anyway, does anyone have a good primer/tutorial explaining all this stuff, especially for Python, and especially for someone coming from a GUI background?

  • JavaScript Class Patterns Revisited: Endgame

    I recently described some of the patterns used to simulate classes (types) in JavaScript. But I missed the best pattern of them all. I described a pattern I called constructor function with a prototype that looks like this: function Person(name, age) { this.name = name; this.age = age; } Person.prototype = { toString: function() { return this.name + " is " + this.age + " years old."; } }; var john = new Person("John Galt", 50); console.log(john.toString()); and I mentioned that the problem with this pattern is that it does not provide any encapsulation, that is, it does not allow private variables. Jan Van Ryswyck recently posted the solution, obvious in hindsight, of wrapping the constructor function in another function, thereby allowing private variables through closure. The above example becomes: var Person = (function() { // private variables go here var name,age; function constructor(n, a) { name = n; age = a; } constructor.prototype = { toString: function() { return name + " is " + age + " years old."; } }; return constructor; })(); var john = new Person("John Galt", 50); console.log(john.toString()); Now we have prototypal inheritance and encapsulation. The important thing to understand is that the constructor, and the toString function both have access to the name and age private variables because they are in an outer scope and they become part of the closure.

  • Was it necessary to build this site in ASP.NET ?

    From what I'm told, the whole StackOverflow/StackExchange 'stack' is based on Microsoft's ASP.NET. SO and the SE sites are probably the most complex that I visit on a regular basis. There's a lot going on in every page - lots of different boxes, pulling data from different places and changing dynamically and responding to user interaction. And the sites work very smoothly, despite the high traffic. My question is, could this have been achieved using a different platform/framework? Does ASP.NET lend itself to more complex projects where other web frameworks would strain and falter? Or is the choice pretty incidental?

    I'm just now moving from a beginner to intermediate level android programmer in the java language. i can successfully write a game framework of classes that work together to accomplish a task beyond basic things, like hello world. but i'm having issues with some pretty basic OOP concepts; When should i derive from an abstract class? When is it more efficient to use an Interface instead of simply sub classing a parent? Basically, between extends, implements, and the abstract keywords, which keywords should be used instead of the others? i'm not looking for a basic definition, as i know them. i need to no when and why i should apply them to my code? what advantages does one have over the other? which is best for game development?

  • Javascript Isometric draw optimization

    I'm having trouble with isometric tiles drawing. At the moment I got an array with the tiles i want to draw. And it all works fine until i increase the size of the array. Since I draw ALL tiles on the map it really affects the game performance (obviously) :D. My problem is I'm no genius when it comes to javascript and I haven't managed to just draw what is in viewport. Should be fairly simple for an expert though because its fixed sizes etc. Canvas is 960x480 pixels, each tile 64x32. This gives 16 tiles on first row, 15 on the next etc. for a total of 16 rows. Tile 0,0 is in the top-right corner. And draws X up to down and Y right to left. Going through the tiles on the first row from left to right as +X -Y.   • Who uses GnuSTEP?

    This has been a big question lurking at the back of my head. From what I see, GnuSTEP nowadays is primarily a "hobby" project of a small but tightly-knit group of people. However I haven't seen a large commercial (off-the-shelf) application that uses it, apart from the small applications that comes with the GnuSTEP distribution. Heck, since even Ubuntu doesn't really use it then is GnuSTEP really more than being a "hobby" framework? I know that Sony's SNAP at one brief moment uses GnuSTEP, but they killed the platform before it can do anything meaningful.

The code is scattered everywhere. There is code in the Controllers, in the models and even in the views. The application uses PROPEL as an ORM. What makes this really difficult is that the Controller may not be directly calling the table, but it may be instantiating a model class that calls that table. Is there an educated way to approach this crazy task? Note: Searching for the table name won't provide a solution because if a model uses that table I wouldn't know which Controller is using that model.

  • Open-source and client-side IRC-Client

    I'm administrating a homepage with an IRC-Webclient. At the moment, it uses a Java-client, modified to be SSL-compatible and compatible with whatever design I want to use. The usual PJIRC thing, with users wishes and concerns implemented (I'll give you SSL-PJIRC if you want - no problem. The login-script will be improved for IE6-support this weekend, means write the object tag if an old IE is found, that's it. Rest runs perfectly well). But still, the better user experience would be a client that only requires the user to enable JavaScript. So, before I go into rewriting and customizing a complete Java-IRC-solution, I'd like to ask some other people - after researching for half a year of time. The requirements are: a) Free hosting, no cgi-bin is acceptable. A lot of hosters also have CGI supported, but it doesn't allow IRC-access. So, seems you are limited to x10-hosting for CGI:IRC. b) Solution must be open source (not free as in free beer, but free as in free speech - I want to be able to read every line of the code). c) Hosting cannot be limited to Windows-hosting. Free operation systems (anything with Linux, BSD, whatever - I think you get what I mean) must be possible. d) No server-side technology. I'm limited to everything that runs client-side only. (Well, a Java-Applet does...). d) Solution must support SSL. e) The side must be able to move. Means, you register to a new free hoster, load your things up via FileZilla and the thing simply runs. No server-concerning implementations needed. f) Old browsers must be supported. From all my research, there are two ways a) Java-Applet b) Use HTML5-Websockets (it is impossible to use the JavaScript-library I found, as it depends on ActiveX - means, Windows hosting). b) means "you are going to enter very unstable content". I worked with HTML5 for month, and, well ... Though, HTML5 also is not suitable for older browsers (old browser support is an absolutely necessary requirement). PHP by the way is a server side solution ... so no line of PHP. My idea now was a Java Applet, and a fallback which again is embedded and proprietary, but only requieres JavaScript (wsirc or Mibbit are great here, whilst I prefer wsirc ... and zooming fonts that are plainly to small, but worse, cannot read the code). So my question is - with free hosting, not installation on server, plain upload - do you see and open source, complelety client-side, ssl-compatible way to use or write a client? This wouldn't be my first programming project, I'm not afraid of the code. If there was a way and I had to write it, even from scratch, I'd do. From all I know, there sadly is none.   • How do I correctly modify a custom cocoa framework?

    Hello, I'm working with the very-useful ID3 framework in my cocoa project. There's one tiny thing I'd like to modify in it, but I can't seem to get the changes I've made to apply to the built framework. The source code provided with the framework comes with an Xcode project, so I've opened that up and for testings sake put an NSLog(@"hello"); in. It's definetly in a place where it will be called and there are other NSLog() calls in the framework that show up so it's not just console output being supressed. To build the framework once modified I've first cleaned the build folder, made sure that it's actually removed the files, and then built it. Then in the Xcode project I'm using the framework in, I've deleted the old reference and added a new one to the framework that's freshly built. Running my project with the newly build framework doesn't call the modified framework code. I've tried with both the Development and Deployment builds that are part of the framework Xcode project. My gut instinct is that the executable that the framework code is compiled into is being cached somehow. But as I'm fairly unfamiliar with the workings of frameworks, I'm not really sure where to look.

    In a WPF MVVM application, I exposed my model object into my viewModel by creating an instance of Model class (which cause dependency) into ViewModel. Instead of creating separate VM properties, I wrap the Model properties inside my ViewModel Property.
