    I'm running Ubuntu server and am looking or a server monitoring utility that is open source/free. We don't need any thing too fancy. Mainly we want to know when the server is offline or if any core services have issues. Preferably something that can send us text messages or emails would be great.

    Making bookmarks in Firefox has become tedious. Can any one point me to a bookmarking extension that works as follows... Decide you want to bookmark a page Left click your way to the target bookmark folder Right the target bookmark folder to get a "Bookmark this page here" option. (It is this "Bookmark this page here" add on that I am looking for) (Edit the book mark title tags etc) Click done Currently you have to: Decide you want to bookmark a page Click on the bookmarks menu pulldown Click on "bookmark this page" Click on the "folder" pulldown Click on "Bookmarks tool bar" or "Bookmarks menu" Left click your way to the target bookmark folder (in a teeny window that that doesn't move the focus as you expand folders) (Edit the book mark title tags etc) Click "Done" That would be four (or five) steps to replace the seven (or eight) steps to make a bookmark in an existing folder. @Chris I assume you are referring me to "Read It Later" http://www.ideashower.com/ideas/launched/read-it-later/ I'll take a look.

  • How to scan and annotate documents and receipts so metadata is searchable and embeddeded in document

    I'm getting tired of living in the modern age and still having a messy filing cabinet full of paper. I have a nice cheap scanner and want to scan receipts, warrenties, and so forth. To make it possible to find these, I'd like to make them searchable via Windows Search (or google desktop search). Because I'm lazy with backups, I want a file format that embeds metadata into the file. Backups should be as simple as coping a bunch of image files around. I'm also cheap, and am not going to install an expensive solution. I'm hoping one of the basic formats can do this. So, what common scannable format satisfies: searchable and and metadata embedded in image generated. The more "open" and portable the better.

What password manager would you recommend, what features does it have that make it awesome? Now at 70+ "answers" it's a pretty good bet that your favourite program is already mentioned.   • Seeking free project planner with auto resource levelling

    As the title says, I am seeking a project planner with automatic resource levelling. It must be free for commercial use and a bonus, but not requirement, would be MS project import/export. I like the look of Task Juggler, but it is at a stage of development hovering between v2 and v3. Anything else? Basically, I want to play "what if games" - I will determine the tasks and their effort, and the dependencies between them and then try to figure out how many staff I need. Since many of the tasks can be done in parallel, it is difficult to guess how many are needed. A PM tool with automatic resource levelling seems like a good way to find out.

  • Resize a RAID 1 volume on OS X Snow Leopard - how? (Note: software raid)

    I've scoured the Internet in search of an answer to this question, and as usual with OSX-related topics, I often don't find any deep-dive technical explanations sufficient enough to feel confident doing dangerous things. Here is my question: I have a Mac Pro, running OS X 10.6.2. I have, as my main root/boot disk, a RAID 1 volume called "Mirror1". Mirror1 is comprised of two 1 TB disks. Mirror1, however, is fixed at 640 GB. That's because, I originally took a 640GB disk, bought a terabyte disk, mirrored it (using diskutil appleraid enable), when it synced I removed the 640GB and replaced it with a second 1 TB disk, and synced again. Voila! A single 640 GB replaced by two 1 TB disks in a mirror.. Actually, no. There's still something missing from the equation: Mirror1 needs to be expanded from 640GB to 1 TB to match the partition sizes on each of those disks. How do I do this?   • HP proliant dl360 g5 fails to reboot

    Some history of this also available here. As of my latest update on the forum linked above, now cold reboot as well as hard reset and following boot for my proliant dl360 g5 works as expected and successfully boot the system. However, soft-reboot results in internal health indicator turning RED on the front and long beeps every around 6seconds until I either cold reboot or press and hold the power button. A summary of system state when this happens: Internal Health led indicator: RED External Health led indicator: Green No led next to any component is red or amber No POST message neither on the video output nor on IML logs (verified both at the time issue occures and after cold reboot that boots the system successfully). Any thoughts please share. I hope we can knock this issue down together with your help!

  • Can I use multiple URLs in the URL field of KeePass?

    I am using KeePass version 2.19. What I would like to do is have more than just one URL address associated with a given user name and password. The entry for a given website might look something like this... Title google User Name email Password pass URL https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?hl=en&continue=https://www.google.com/ https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?hl=sv&continue=https://www.google.com/ https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?hl=de&continue=https://www.google.com/ As you can see the ?hl=en changes into ?hl=sv and then to ?hl=de for the three different languages in which I wish to view the Google log-in page. But this of course could be something completely different, like different web services from the same provider like YouTube and Gmail by Google. Very much like SE where you have several websites but only use one user name and password. I imagine something along the lines of having multiple entries for one and the same website, where KeePass would actually prompt you to choose which one you want to use. So you have several user names and passwords that use the same URL. But is it possible to have several URLs using the same user name and password, so that KeePass asks me "to which of the following three URLs do you want to auto-log into with this password"?

    Suppose that in FreeBSD (or linux maybe) there is a non-privileged normal user (non-superuser). And there is a telnet standalone (I know that telnet is usually run under inetd) running under (owned by) this user. (Suppose that there was no original, root-owned telnet running.) This telnet server is programmed so that it does not check ld_* environment variables before passing it to /bin/login owned by root that has setuid set up. The question would be: 1. Will this telnet work? 2. If it does work, will it even be able to pass environment variables to /bin/login?

  • Laptop abruptly powers off after few seconds of booting

    I have a 3 year old HP Pavilion dv2208 laptop. Recently it started abruptly powering off in like ~20-30 seconds into Windows boot sequence after almost every reboot/shutdown. Even if I leave it in Repair/Start Windows Normally stage it powers off anyway. The only way I managed to workaround this is to enter BIOS setup screen and leave it on for no less than 10 minutes. I don't know what happens there but this helps every time. Any ideas of possible ways to fix this that don't include replacing motherboard are highly appreciated. P.S.: I've tried resetting BIOS to defaults, updating to the latest BIOS version, etc. Happens with both Vista and Windows 7.

  • Dual pane file manager for Mac OS X

    Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free...   • adding a custom user folder on Ubuntu

    Question: How do you add a custom folder to the collection of user folders that come with Ubuntu? Info: I just loaded my netbook with Ubuntu Desktop 10.04LTS (Desktop because it is an aspire one and the Apocalypse seems to follow when ever i try to install netbook remix onto it). It comes with standard folders like Documents, Music, Pictures, Downloads(though this one doesn't appear until you actually download something), Videos, etc etc. These are handly little folders because they have little symbols on them and are nicely located in my file browser. it is basically like the folder lay out the windows had in vista. I do a lot of little programing on this computer so i have a folder in which i keep all these single kb code files. Obviously named "Code" that I keep in my home folder. But I would really like to it over listed next to my other user folders. In summary, how do you add a folder to the listing on the file browser. And, if possible, how do you give it an icon? (I understand fully that I will probably have to make said Icon) those two things are what I'm seeking to do. ~n P.s. please correct me if I'm using the wrong name. I just guessed and called them "User Folders" because they were folders the user uses. made sense. but if they have another name like "libraries" please say so. Thanks

  • Is it possible to store playlists in music file metadata?

    I have been trying to think of a way to store my playlists completely independently from any one music player, and I think that one way to do this would be to use each song's tags to store the list of playlists in which that song belongs. For example, if song1.mp3 and song2.flac both belong in the "Cool Songs" playlist, then I would add to each of them a tag called "Playlist" with a value of "Cool Songs". To access the "Cool Songs" playlist in my music player, I simply search for songs where the "Playlist" tag has a value of "Cool Songs". Obviously, I would need a music player that allows me to manipulate arbitrary tags on any music format, including multiple instances of the same tag (so that songs can be in multiple playlists). Instead of creating playlists, I create "saved searches" or whatever the music player calls them, that search for the appropriate playlist tag. Is this scheme possible, and how many music player programs would support such a scheme?

  • Delay index build until SQL Server table load is complete with SSIS

    I have a large table that I am updating. Is it possible to disable index updates on the destination table until the load is complete? It seems like a waste for it to be constantly updating the index with each commit. I can just drop and recreate the index before and after the load, I just want to know if there is a quick way to configure that in the OLEDB or SQL Server destination. Server is Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition, running SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition with SSIS.
