• Running complete Native Linux on phones that are bootloader-unlocked [on hold]

  Since there are many phones (HTC, Samsung, LG, Nexus) today that have bootloader unlocked, I want to ask what's preventing them from running a complete native GNU/Linux. GNU/Linux has ARM port and we can run a command line GNU/Linux on top of Android by the method of chroot. So, what's preventing for existing bootloader unlocked Android phones from running a complete GNU/Linux natively? The device should get a long shelf life if it has one such port. My few thoughts.. Proprietary drivers for hardware that cannot be made to work when using a different OS. And the binary provider will never support any OS other than what the phone is shipped with. Application Interface. The interface for desktop apps doesn't fit to the mobile display with different PPI. Kernel. Since android devices use Linux kernel whose sources should be available, could the device kernel be modified to work with GNU/Linux. And any other reasons?

  Ok, this question is for people with either a deep knowledge of PRISM or some magic skills I just lack (yet). The Background is simple: Prism allows the declaration of events to which the user can subscribe or publish. In code this looks like this: _eventAggregator.GetEvent<LayoutChangedEvent>().Subscribe(UpdateUi, true); _eventAggregator.GetEvent<LayoutChangedEvent>().Publish("Some argument"); Now this is nice, especially because these events are strongly typed, and the declaration is a piece of cake: public class LayoutChangedEvent : CompositePresentationEvent<string> { } But now comes the hard part: I want to trace events in some way. I had the idea to subscribe using a lambda expression calling a simple log message. Worked perfectly in WPF, but in Silverlight there is some method access error (took me some time to figure out the reason).. If you want to see for yourself, try this in Silverlight: eA.GetEvent<VideoStartedEvent>().Subscribe(obj => TraceEvent(obj, "vSe", log)); If this would be possible, I would be happy, because I could easily trace all events using a single line to subscribe. But it does not... The alternative approach is writing a different functions for each event, and assign this function to the events. Why different functions? Well, I need to know WHICH event was published. If I use the same function for two different events I only get the payload as argument. I have now way to figure out which event caused the tracing message. I tried: using Reflection to get the causing event (not working) using a constructor in the event to enable each event to trace itself (not allowed) Any other ideas? Chris PS: Writing this text took me most likely longer than writing 20 functions for my 20 events, but I refuse to give up :-) I just had the idea to use postsharp, that would most likely work (although I am not sure, perhaps I end up having only information about the base class).. • Logging with Quartz.net

  I will shamelessly state that I have little experience with Log4Net... I only just installed it, but it won't capture log events from Quartz.net, which is a scheduling library. Apparently Quartz.net uses Commons Logging and that needs to be configured to point to my Log4Net settings. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. • Strage character encoding problem with Eclipse / Spring / Tomcat 6

  Hi, I have been trying things all da but can't get a proper solution. My problem is: I am developing a Spring MVC based app in my local Tomcat. My MYSQl database has UTF-8 encoding set, all content in there displays properly when using phpMyAdmin. Also the output in LOG files using log4j in catalina.out works fine. My JSP pages are configured by <!-- encoding --> <%@ page contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" %> <%@ page pageEncoding="UTF-8" %> Also showing data on my JSP works fine. I can also send data from my Controller without any DB intereference using special chars, e.g. String str = "UTF-8 Test: Ä Ö Ü ß è é â"; logger.debug(str); mav.addObject("utftest", str); That displays correctly in log and on jsp page in browser. BUT: When having special chars directly in my JSP file, e.g. for text in headers, this does not work. FF and Google Chrome display strange chars but report the page to be UTF-8. When switching to Latin, the chars just get more and more strange. Same problem when showing text tokens from my messages.properties file, although Eclipse says when right-clicking that UTF-8 will be used. I am a little it lost and don't know where to check now. Summary: DB storage is fine DB output on JSP is fine Output on JSP directly form controller is fine even reading in form forms is fine .properties files and JSP text is not fine !!! Any ideas? I really appreciate and tips.

  I am trying to build Linux From Scratch, and now I am at chapter 5.4, which tells me how to build Binutils. • Investigating the root cause behind SharePoint's "request not found in the TrackedRequests"

  We have a long standing issue in our bug tracking system about the dreaded "ERROR: request not found in the TrackedRequests. We might be creating and closing webs on different threads." message in SharePoint's trace log. As we develop Workflow software for the SharePoint market, we look into this issue from time to time to make sure it is not caused by our products. I have personally come to the conclusion that this is a problem in SharePoint, but perhaps someone else can prove me wrong. Here is what I know: According to the hundreds of search results returned by Google on this topic, this issue appears to be mainly related to SharePoint Workflows, both SharePoint Designer and Visual Studio based workflows. Assuming ULS logging is set to Monitorable, the easiest way to reproduce this problem is to create a new SharePoint Designer Workflow, attach it to a document library, set it to auto start on add/update, don't add any actions, save the workflow and upload a file to the document library. The error is only visible in the SharePoint trace log, it does not appear to impact the execution of the workflow at hand. I have verified that the problem occurs on 32 bit as well as 64 bit systems, Win2K3 and 2K8, WSS and MOSS with SharePoint versions up to the December 2009 Cumulative Update (6524). The problem does not occur when a workflow is started manually. There are dozens of related posts on MSDN Forums, hundreds on Google, one on StackOverflow and none on SharePoint Overflow. There appears to be no answer. Does anyone have any idea about what is going on, what is causing this and if we should worry or file this under 'Red Herrings'.

  I have an Ubuntu 9.10 netbook. I has always run great. Two days ago, I was running as root for a while (~30), and when I moved back to my user account (only other account one this machine), all the commands in ~/bin stopped working. If I try ls, it comes up with "cannot execute binary file". Same with ln, mv, mkdir, clear, cp, etc. They all run as root(which makes sense, different files), but I have no idea why this happened. I don't want to stay as root to move around easily. Any idea?

Where do I find in Firebug what content or error .load() is returning? • Android Loading listview items from service results in hang

  Hello, In my Android application, I have a ListActivity. This ListActivity uses a SimpleAdapter that I fill with items from my service. So, in my code, I do: MySuperCoolService.Binder serviceBinder = null; private ServiceConnection serviceConnection = new ServiceConnection() { public void onServiceConnected(ComponentName className, IBinder service) { Log.d(TAG, "Service connection: connected!"); serviceBinder = (MySuperCoolService.Binder)service; } public void onServiceDisconnected(ComponentName className) { Log.d(TAG, "Service connection: disconnected"); serviceBinder = null; } }; bindService(new Intent(this, MySuperCoolService.class), serviceConnection, BIND_AUTO_CREATE); while(serviceBinder==null) { Thread.Sleep(1000); } // now retrieve from service using binder and set list adapter This whole operation takes hardly any time (less than a second), so I want it to run in the UI thread. See my onCreate: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); fillDataUsingCodeAbove(); } The reason I want this to run in the UI thread is that if you have a list item selected, or you have scrolled to a certain position in the ListView, and you rotate the device or take out the keyboard or something (to trigger a configuration change) when my activity is restarted, Android will try to restore the state right after onCreate. But, if I run it in a separate thread, it will not. Also there is a cool fadein animation too :) The problem I am having with running it in the UI thread is that when I try to bind to the service, that service bind request gets put onto the message queue. But then when I go into my loop, I stop the message queue from looping. So my program hangs, because it's waiting for the service to get bound, and the service won't get bound until the loop ends. I have thought of putting Looper.loop() inside my loop, but that just hangs it at Looper.loop() (I don't know why.) Sorry for such a long question, Isaac Waller

  I'm trying to create a DataGrid dynamically. Instead, I want to create the grid dynamically. However, it does appear that at the point of creation the values of theStore and layout are correct. Suggestions please, or indeed a working example of a programmic grid might solve the problem.

• How a password is transmited to AD Server

  My question is how ADSI performs SetPassword operation. According to what I have read ADSI is a COM interface and it has more capabilities than AD provides through LDAP. While you are suppose to update unicodePwd attribute of a personaccount entity through LDAP, ADSI provides you SetPassword call. I know that ADSI & AD provides Kerberos during authentication. So how the password is transmitted to server when SetPassword is called? Is it raw binary unencrypted data? Or does Kerberos comes into play at this call?

• How to refactor use of the general Exception?

  Our code catches the general exception everywhere. Usually it writes the error to a log table in the database and shows a MessageBox to the user to say that the operation requested failed. If there is database interaction, the transaction is rolled back. I have introduced a business logic layer and a data access layer to unravel some of the logic. In the data access layer, I have chosen not to catch anything and I also throw ArgumentNullExceptions and ArgumentOutOfRangeExceptions so that the message passed up the stack does not come straight from the database. In the business logic layer I put a try catch. In the catch I rollback the transaction, do the logging and rethrow. In the presentation layer there is another try catch that displays a MessageBox. I am now thinking about catching a DataException and an ArgumentException instead of an Exception where I know the code only accesses a database. Where the code accesses a web service, then I thought I would create my own "WebServiceException", which would be created in the data access layer whenever an HttpException, WebException or SoapException is thrown. So now, generally I will be catching 2 or 3 exceptions where currently I catch just the general Exception, and I think that seems OK to me. Does anyone wrap exceptions up again to carry the message up to the presentation layer? I think I should probably add a try catch to Main() that catches Exception, attempts to log it, displays an "Application has encountered an error" message and exits the application. So, my question is, does anyone see any holes in my plan? Are there any obvious exceptions that I should be catching or do these ones pretty much cover it (other than file access - I think there is only 1 place where we read-write to a config file).

• Add dpkg .symbols or.shlibs to package made using checkinstall

  I have created a simple package using checkinstall of the Oracle Instantclient client libraries, the package installs without problem and is seen in the system. Problem is, that checkinstall doesn't create /var/lib/dpkg/info/oracle-instantclient11.2-basic.symbols or /var/lib/dpkg/info/oracle-instantclient11.2-basic.shlibs files so when I try to create another package (with proper build scripts) that depends on oracle-instantclient11.2-basic the build fails with dpkg-shlibdeps: error: no dependency information found for \ /usr/lib/libclntsh.so.11.1 (used by \ debian/libopendbx1-oracle/usr/lib/opendbx/liboraclebackend.so.1.2.0). dh_shlibdeps: dpkg-shlibdeps \ -Tdebian/libopendbx1-oracle.substvars \ debian/libopendbx1-oracle/usr/lib/opendbx/liboraclebackend.so.1.2.0 \ returned exit code 2 make: *** [binary-arch] Error 9 Is there an easy way to automatically create a package with .symbols or .shlibs files?

• How to dump remote database without mysqldump?

  I want to dump the database on my remotely hosted site in regular intervals using a shell script. Unfortunately the server is locked down pretty tight, has no mysqldump installed, binary files can't be executed by normal users/in home directories (so I can't "install" it myself) and the database lives on a separate server, so I can't grab the files directly. The only thing I can do is log into the webserver via SSH and establish a connection to the database server using the mysql command line client. How can I dump the contents to a file a la mysqldump in SQL format? Bonus: If possible, how can I dump the contents directly to my end of the SSH connection?

  I'm using backbone.js and Lithium. I'm fetching a model from the server by passing in a _id that is received as a hidden parameter on the page.   Hey. consider d following table and data... in_timestamp | out_timestamp | name | in_id | out_id | in_server | out_server | status timestamp1 | timestamp2 | data1 |id1 | id2 | others-server1 | my-server1 | success timestamp2 | timestamp3 | data1 | id2 | id3 | my-server1 | my-server2 | success timestamp3 | timestamp4 | data1 | id3 | id4 | my-server2 | my-server3 | success timestamp4 | timestamp5 | data1 | id4 | id5 | my-server3 | others-server2 | success the above data represent log of a execution flow of some data across servers. e.g. some data has flowed from some 'outside-server1' to bunch of 'my-servers' and finally to destined 'others-server2'. Question : 1) I need to give this log in representable form to client where he doesn't need to know anything about the bunch of 'my-servers'. All i am supposed to give is timestamp of the data entered my infrastructure and when it left; drilling down to following info. in_timestamp (of 'others_server1' to 'my-server1') out_timestamp (of 'my-server3' to 'others-server2') name status I want to write sql for the same! Can someone help? NOTE : there might not be 3 'my-servers' all the time. It differs from situation to situation. e.g. there might be 4 'my-server' involved for, say, data2! 2) Are there any other alternatives to SQL? I mean stored procs/etc? 3) Optimizations? (The records are huge in number! As of now, it is around 5 million a day. And we are supposed to show records that are upto a week old.) In advance, THANKS FOR THE HELP! :)

• Adding editFTPnetPRO to SSIS package causes error message

  I'm trying to add some secure FTP code to an SSIS package. I've used the EnterpriseDT product successfully on other .NET projects, so I wanted to incorporate it into an SSIS 2008 package I'm working on. If I create a Script Task (VB), edit the script, choose Project | Add Reference, and select the editFTPnetPRO.dll file, it comes back with this error: No template information found. See the application log in Event Viewer for more details. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer. The application log doesn't contain any pertinent details. I have no idea what this is trying to tell me. I've gone down a couple dead ends searching for this error message and following the prescribed fixes, but nothing has fixed it yet. Any idea what might be going wrong? P.S. - I tried the devenv.exe /installvstemplates fix, which didn't change anything. Update: Here is the error captured in the SSIS package when you try to run it: Error: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. --- System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'edtFTPnetPRO, Version=6.3.1.20, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=0dce1ad63760d80b' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Where is it looking for this file? I tried copying it to the project direcory, the bin folder, and the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.nnnn folder, but it still can't find it, and it won't tell me where it's looking.

• Why does Fabric display the disconnect from server message for almost 2 minutes?

  Fabric displays Disconnecting from username@server... done. for almost 2 minutes prior to showing a new command prompt whenever I issue a fab command. This problem exists when using Fabric commands issued to both an internal server and a Rackspace cloud server. Below I've included the auth.log from the server, and I didn't see anything in the logs on my MacBook. Any thoughts as to what the problem is? However, I know that at one point I didn't have this problem. Things that have changed since then are that I have recreated my virtualenv's using virtualenv 1.4.7, virtualenvwrapper 2.1, and pip 0.7. Not sure if this is related, but it is a thought since I run my fabfiles from within a virtualenv.
