• How does XMPP work with perl?

  Hey everybody, I am trying to make my own jabber bot but i have run into a little trouble. I have gotten my bot to respond to messages, however, if I try to change the bot's presence then it seems as though all of the messages you send to the bot get delayed. What I mean is when I run the script I change the presence so I can see that it is online. Then When I send it a message it takes 3 before the callback subroutine i have set up for messages gets called. After the 3rd message is sent and the chat subroutine is called it still process the first message I sent. This really doesn't pose TOO much of a problem except that I have it set up to log out when I send the message "logout" and it has to be followed by two more messages in order to log out. I am not sure what it is that I have to do to fix this but i think it has something to do with iq packets because I have an iq callback set as well and it gets called 2 times after setting the presence.   Ok, this question is for people with either a deep knowledge of PRISM or some magic skills I just lack (yet). The Background is simple: Prism allows the declaration of events to which the user can subscribe or publish. In code this looks like this: _eventAggregator.GetEvent<LayoutChangedEvent>().Subscribe(UpdateUi, true); _eventAggregator.GetEvent<LayoutChangedEvent>().Publish("Some argument"); Now this is nice, especially because these events are strongly typed, and the declaration is a piece of cake: public class LayoutChangedEvent : CompositePresentationEvent<string> { } But now comes the hard part: I want to trace events in some way. I had the idea to subscribe using a lambda expression calling a simple log message. Worked perfectly in WPF, but in Silverlight there is some method access error (took me some time to figure out the reason).. If you want to see for yourself, try this in Silverlight: eA.GetEvent<VideoStartedEvent>().Subscribe(obj => TraceEvent(obj, "vSe", log)); If this would be possible, I would be happy, because I could easily trace all events using a single line to subscribe. But it does not... The alternative approach is writing a different functions for each event, and assign this function to the events. Why different functions? Well, I need to know WHICH event was published. If I use the same function for two different events I only get the payload as argument. I have now way to figure out which event caused the tracing message. I tried: using Reflection to get the causing event (not working) using a constructor in the event to enable each event to trace itself (not allowed) Any other ideas? Chris PS: Writing this text took me most likely longer than writing 20 functions for my 20 events, but I refuse to give up :-) I just had the idea to use postsharp, that would most likely work (although I am not sure, perhaps I end up having only information about the base class)..   Hello, With Android-Emulator I am not able to write/create a file on the SD Card (for logging).   I am trying to build Linux From Scratch, and now I am at chapter 5.4, which tells me how to build Binutils. • Investigating the root cause behind SharePoint's "request not found in the TrackedRequests"

  We have a long standing issue in our bug tracking system about the dreaded "ERROR: request not found in the TrackedRequests. We might be creating and closing webs on different threads." message in SharePoint's trace log. As we develop Workflow software for the SharePoint market, we look into this issue from time to time to make sure it is not caused by our products. I have personally come to the conclusion that this is a problem in SharePoint, but perhaps someone else can prove me wrong. Here is what I know: According to the hundreds of search results returned by Google on this topic, this issue appears to be mainly related to SharePoint Workflows, both SharePoint Designer and Visual Studio based workflows. Assuming ULS logging is set to Monitorable, the easiest way to reproduce this problem is to create a new SharePoint Designer Workflow, attach it to a document library, set it to auto start on add/update, don't add any actions, save the workflow and upload a file to the document library. The error is only visible in the SharePoint trace log, it does not appear to impact the execution of the workflow at hand. I have verified that the problem occurs on 32 bit as well as 64 bit systems, Win2K3 and 2K8, WSS and MOSS with SharePoint versions up to the December 2009 Cumulative Update (6524). The problem does not occur when a workflow is started manually. There are dozens of related posts on MSDN Forums, hundreds on Google, one on StackOverflow and none on SharePoint Overflow. There appears to be no answer. Does anyone have any idea about what is going on, what is causing this and if we should worry or file this under 'Red Herrings'.

  I have an Ubuntu 9.10 netbook. I has always run great. Two days ago, I was running as root for a while (~30), and when I moved back to my user account (only other account one this machine), all the commands in ~/bin stopped working. If I try ls, it comes up with "cannot execute binary file". Same with ln, mv, mkdir, clear, cp, etc. They all run as root(which makes sense, different files), but I have no idea why this happened. I don't want to stay as root to move around easily. Any idea?

• Logging with Quartz.net

  I will shamelessly state that I have little experience with Log4Net... I only just installed it, but it won't capture log events from Quartz.net, which is a scheduling library. Apparently Quartz.net uses Commons Logging and that needs to be configured to point to my Log4Net settings. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. • Strage character encoding problem with Eclipse / Spring / Tomcat 6

  Hi, I have been trying things all da but can't get a proper solution. My problem is: I am developing a Spring MVC based app in my local Tomcat. My MYSQl database has UTF-8 encoding set, all content in there displays properly when using phpMyAdmin. Also the output in LOG files using log4j in catalina.out works fine. My JSP pages are configured by <!-- encoding --> <%@ page contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" %> <%@ page pageEncoding="UTF-8" %> Also showing data on my JSP works fine. I can also send data from my Controller without any DB intereference using special chars, e.g. String str = "UTF-8 Test: Ä Ö Ü ß è é â"; logger.debug(str); mav.addObject("utftest", str); That displays correctly in log and on jsp page in browser. BUT: When having special chars directly in my JSP file, e.g. for text in headers, this does not work. FF and Google Chrome display strange chars but report the page to be UTF-8. When switching to Latin, the chars just get more and more strange. Same problem when showing text tokens from my messages.properties file, although Eclipse says when right-clicking that UTF-8 will be used. I am a little it lost and don't know where to check now. Summary: DB storage is fine DB output on JSP is fine Output on JSP directly form controller is fine even reading in form forms is fine .properties files and JSP text is not fine !!! Any ideas? I really appreciate and tips.

• Android Loading listview items from service results in hang

  Hello, In my Android application, I have a ListActivity. This ListActivity uses a SimpleAdapter that I fill with items from my service. See my onCreate: public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); fillDataUsingCodeAbove(); } The reason I want this to run in the UI thread is that if you have a list item selected, or you have scrolled to a certain position in the ListView, and you rotate the device or take out the keyboard or something (to trigger a configuration change) when my activity is restarted, Android will try to restore the state right after onCreate. But, if I run it in a separate thread, it will not. Also there is a cool fadein animation too :) The problem I am having with running it in the UI thread is that when I try to bind to the service, that service bind request gets put onto the message queue. But then when I go into my loop, I stop the message queue from looping. So my program hangs, because it's waiting for the service to get bound, and the service won't get bound until the loop ends. I have thought of putting Looper.loop() inside my loop, but that just hangs it at Looper.loop() (I don't know why.) Sorry for such a long question, Isaac Waller

  My question is how ADSI performs SetPassword operation. According to what I have read ADSI is a COM interface and it has more capabilities than AD provides through LDAP. While you are suppose to update unicodePwd attribute of a personaccount entity through LDAP, ADSI provides you SetPassword call. I know that ADSI & AD provides Kerberos during authentication. So how the password is transmitted to server when SetPassword is called? Is it raw binary unencrypted data? Or does Kerberos comes into play at this call?

  I'm trying to create a DataGrid dynamically. Instead, I want to create the grid dynamically. However, it does appear that at the point of creation the values of theStore and layout are correct. Suggestions please, or indeed a working example of a programmic grid might solve the problem.

• How to refactor use of the general Exception?

  Our code catches the general exception everywhere. Usually it writes the error to a log table in the database and shows a MessageBox to the user to say that the operation requested failed. If there is database interaction, the transaction is rolled back. I have introduced a business logic layer and a data access layer to unravel some of the logic. In the data access layer, I have chosen not to catch anything and I also throw ArgumentNullExceptions and ArgumentOutOfRangeExceptions so that the message passed up the stack does not come straight from the database. In the business logic layer I put a try catch. In the catch I rollback the transaction, do the logging and rethrow. In the presentation layer there is another try catch that displays a MessageBox. I am now thinking about catching a DataException and an ArgumentException instead of an Exception where I know the code only accesses a database. Where the code accesses a web service, then I thought I would create my own "WebServiceException", which would be created in the data access layer whenever an HttpException, WebException or SoapException is thrown. So now, generally I will be catching 2 or 3 exceptions where currently I catch just the general Exception, and I think that seems OK to me. Does anyone wrap exceptions up again to carry the message up to the presentation layer? I think I should probably add a try catch to Main() that catches Exception, attempts to log it, displays an "Application has encountered an error" message and exits the application. So, my question is, does anyone see any holes in my plan? Are there any obvious exceptions that I should be catching or do these ones pretty much cover it (other than file access - I think there is only 1 place where we read-write to a config file).

• Add dpkg .symbols or.shlibs to package made using checkinstall

  I have created a simple package using checkinstall of the Oracle Instantclient client libraries, the package installs without problem and is seen in the system. Problem is, that checkinstall doesn't create /var/lib/dpkg/info/oracle-instantclient11.2-basic.symbols or /var/lib/dpkg/info/oracle-instantclient11.2-basic.shlibs files so when I try to create another package (with proper build scripts) that depends on oracle-instantclient11.2-basic the build fails with dpkg-shlibdeps: error: no dependency information found for \ /usr/lib/libclntsh.so.11.1 (used by \ debian/libopendbx1-oracle/usr/lib/opendbx/liboraclebackend.so.1.2.0). dh_shlibdeps: dpkg-shlibdeps \ -Tdebian/libopendbx1-oracle.substvars \ debian/libopendbx1-oracle/usr/lib/opendbx/liboraclebackend.so.1.2.0 \ returned exit code 2 make: *** [binary-arch] Error 9 Is there an easy way to automatically create a package with .symbols or .shlibs files?

  I'm using backbone.js and Lithium. I'm fetching a model from the server by passing in a _id that is received as a hidden parameter on the page. • Why does Fabric display the disconnect from server message for almost 2 minutes?

  Fabric displays Disconnecting from username@server... done. for almost 2 minutes prior to showing a new command prompt whenever I issue a fab command. This problem exists when using Fabric commands issued to both an internal server and a Rackspace cloud server. Below I've included the auth.log from the server, and I didn't see anything in the logs on my MacBook. Any thoughts as to what the problem is?   Basically, I am looking for something equivalent to cvs diff -D"1 day ago" -D"2010-02-29 11:11". While collecting more and more information, I found a solution. I paste it here, for others that might have similar problems. Things I have tried: In git, how can I get the diff between all the commits that occured between two dates? was ansered here with: git whatchanged --since="1 day ago" -p But this gives a diff for each commit, even if there are multiple commits in one file. I know that "date" is a bit of a loose concept in git, I thought there must be some way to do this. git diff 'master@{1 day ago}..master gives some warning warning: Log for 'master' only goes back to Tue, 16 Mar 2010 14:17:32 +0100. and does not show old diffs. git format-patch --since=yesterday --stdout does not give anything. revs=$(git log --pretty="format:%H" --since="1 day ago");git diff $(echo "$revs"|tail -n1) $(echo "$revs"|head -n1) works somehow, but seems complicated and does not restrict to the current branch. git diff $(git rev-list -n1 --before="1 day ago" master) seems to work and a default way to do similar things, although more complicated than I thought. Funnily, git-cvsserver does not support "cvs diff -D" (without that it is documented somewhere).

• How to dump remote database without mysqldump?

  I want to dump the database on my remotely hosted site in regular intervals using a shell script. Unfortunately the server is locked down pretty tight, has no mysqldump installed, binary files can't be executed by normal users/in home directories (so I can't "install" it myself) and the database lives on a separate server, so I can't grab the files directly. The only thing I can do is log into the webserver via SSH and establish a connection to the database server using the mysql command line client. How can I dump the contents to a file a la mysqldump in SQL format? Bonus: If possible, how can I dump the contents directly to my end of the SSH connection?

Question : 1) I need to give this log in representable form to client where he doesn't need to know anything about the bunch of 'my-servers'. All i am supposed to give is timestamp of the data entered my infrastructure and when it left; drilling down to following info. in_timestamp (of 'others_server1' to 'my-server1') out_timestamp (of 'my-server3' to 'others-server2') name status I want to write sql for the same! Can someone help? NOTE : there might not be 3 'my-servers' all the time. It differs from situation to situation. e.g. there might be 4 'my-server' involved for, say, data2! 2) Are there any other alternatives to SQL? I mean stored procs/etc? 3) Optimizations?
