• Move to php in windows? Concern, hints, "please don't do!"?

  I am considering to move frome Microsoft languages to PHP (just for web dev) which has quite an interesting syntax, a perlish look (but a wider programmer base) and it allows me to reuse the web without reinventing it. I have some concerns too. I would be more than happy to gather some wisdom from stackoverflow community, (challenge to my opinions warmly welcome). Here are my doubts. Efficiency. Cgi are slow, what I am supposed to use? Fastcgi? Or what else? Efficiency + stability. Is PHP on windows really stable and a good choice in terms of performances? Database. I use very often MSSQL (I regret, i like it). Could I widely and efficiently interface PHP with MSSQL (using smartly stored pro, for example). XSLT + XML performance. I work quite a lot with XML and XSLT and I really find the MS xml parser a great software component. Are parser used in PHP fast, reliable and efficient (I am interested mainly in DOM, not SAX)? Objects. Is the PHP object programming model valid end efficient? 6 Regex. How efficient is PHP processing regexp? Many thanks for your advices.

  I'm wondering if there is a robust and graceful way using linq2xml to query an item deep within an xml hierarchy. For example: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <data> <core id="01234"> <field1>some data</field1> <field2>more data</field2> <metadata> <response> <status code="0">Success</status> <content> <job>f1b5c3f8-e6b1-4ae4-905a-a7c5de3f13c6</job> <id>id of the content</id> </content> </response> </metadata> </core> </data> With this xml how do I query the value of without using something like this: var doc = XElement.Load("file.xml"); string id = (string)doc.Element("core") .Element("metadata") .Element("response") .Element("content") .Element("id"); I don't like the above approach because it is error prone (throws exception if any tag is missing in the hierarchy) and honestly ugly. Is there a more robust and graceful approach, perhaps using the sql-like syntax of linq?

• Why is -webkit-keyframes not working in my SASS mixin?

  I have this SASS mixin that should make a button flash: @mixin background_animation($color) { -webkit-animation: backgroundAnimation 800ms infinite; @-webkit-keyframes backgroundAnimation { 0% {background-color: $color;} 50% {background-color: red;} 100% {background-color: $color;} } } I am using it like this: @include background_animation(#000000); However, it's not working. The background color of the button won't flash. Can anybody tell me what I'm missing here? P.S. The code works fine when not including it as a mixin. • Strange problem on some client's browsers

  We are fighting a strange problem on the company that I work. We created a site of a promotion to a client where its consumers can register products barcodes to win prizes. The site was created using PHP and MySQL. The site uses SSL on every form. However, some consumers report to the client's call-center they was no able make a registration at the site. We try everything, but we cannot, by no ways, reproduce the problem. The consumers reported the problem on several browsers ranging from IE8 to Firefox, the problem is same on everyone them. One co-woker this weekend was able to catch this same bug on his wife's notebook and brought her computer to the company so we could test. However, here on the company the problem didn't happened and we can make the registration normally. We suppose this problem could be a matter of encoding and special characteres like ã and ç. But we are sure that all source files are UTF8- with BOM. We also suspect of MSXml version, but we are note sure anymore. Because of legal impediments the client cannot ask the consumers to install anything on they computers to test or fix the problem. Sorry but by complience rules we also cannot share the url of the site, what is a pity. I know it is too much on vacuun, but perhaps you could had crossed something similar. Thank you

With a text file that I want to read line-by-line, I can write this: with open(file, "r") as file: for line in file: # deal with each line.... This idiom is documented in PEP 234 but I have failed to locate a similar idiom for binary files. I have tried this: >>> with open('dups.txt','rb') as f: ... for chunk in iter(f.read,''): ... i+=1 >>> i 1 # 30 MB file, i==1 means read in one go... I tried putting iter(f.read(buf_size),'') but that is a syntax error because of the parens after the callable in iter(). I know I could write a function, but is there way with the default idiom of for chunk in file: where I can use a buffer size versus a line oriented? If not, I apologise in advance. If you come from the Validation in the Model camp - does Model mean OOP representation of data (i.e. Active Record/Data Mapper) as "Entity" (to borrow the DDD terminology) - in which case you would, I assume, want all Model classes to inherit common validation constraints. Or can these rules simply be part of a Service in the Model - i.e. a Validation service? For example, could you consider Zend_Form and it's validation classes part of the Model? The concept of a Domain Model does not appear to be limited to Entities, and so validation may not necessarily need to be confined to this Entities. It seems that you would require a lot of potentially superfluous handing of values and responses back and forth between forms and "Entities" - and in some instances you may not persist the data recieved from user input, or recieve it from user input at all.

  I'd like to know the "Haskell way" to catch and handle exceptions. As shown below, I understand the basic syntax, but I'm not sure how to deal with the type system in this situation. The below code attempts to return the value of the requested environment variable. Obviously if that variable isn't there I want to catch the exception and return Nothing. getEnvVar x = do { var <- getEnv x; Just var; } `catch` \ex -> do { Nothing } Here is the error: Couldn't match expected type `IO a' against inferred type `Maybe String' In the expression: Just var In the first argument of `catch', namely `do { var <- getEnv x; Just var }' In the expression: do { var <- getEnv x; Just var } `catch` \ ex -> do { Nothing } I could return string values: getRequestURI x = do { requestURI <- getEnv x; return requestURI; } `catch` \ex -> do { return "" } however, this doesn't feel like the Haskell way. What is the Haskell way?

• When is Googling it wrong?

  I've been going through Stack Overflow for quite a bit now and noticed certain people (usually experienced programmers) frown upon Googling (researching) certain problems. Since I myself tend to use Google quite a bit to solve certain programming related issues I found certain comments rather demoralising. Now some of you may have come here trigger happy to delete this post but I needed some clarification. I usually Google things that usually syntax related that I would have never figured out on my own. For example I once wondered how to access the properties of a class that I didn't have a direct relationship to. So after a bit of research I discovered reflection and got what I wanted. Now in another scenario is learning a new language, in my case Silverlight were it differs in certain aspects of .NET compared to say ASP.NET. A few weeks ago I had no idea how to load another Silverlight page (usercontrol) and had to Google my way to the solution which I found wasn't as simple as I had imagined. In scenario three is were I myself frown up, that is just stealing a huge chunk of code to avoid doing the work yourself, for example paging a HTML table using JavaScript, where one just copies and pastes the JavasSript code without as much as trying to understand how it works. I do admit I have done this once or twice before for trivial tasks that had very little time limit and weren't all that important but most of the time still have to throw away what I found because it took too much time to adapt it and get what I wanted out of it. In the last scenario, I sometimes have a piece of code that I would be really unhappy about, as in I find it sloppy or too overcomplicated and try to look on the Internet to see other ways to tackle the same problem, let's say filtering through a table. With the knowledge I acquire I learned new coding practices that help me work more efficiently like "Do not repeat yourself" and such. Now in your opinion when do you find it wrong to use Google (or any other researching tool) to find a solution to your problem?

• Shaping EF LINQ Query Results Using Multi-Table Includes

  I have a simple LINQ EF query below using the method syntax. I'm using my Include statement to join four tables: Event and Doc are the two main tables, EventDoc is a many-to-many link table, and DocUsage is a lookup table. My challenge is that I'd like to shape my results by only selecting specific columns from each of the four tables. But, the compiler is giving a compiler is giving me the following error: 'System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EntityCollection does not contain a definition for "Doc' and no extension method 'Doc' accepting a first argument of type 'System.Data.Objects.DataClasses.EntityCollection' could be found. I'm sure this is something easy but I'm not figuring it out. I haven't been able to find an example of someone using the multi-table include but also shaping the projection. • Is there programming language with better approach for switch's break statements ?

  It's the same syntax in a way too many languages: switch (someValue) { case OPTION_ONE: case OPTION_LIKE_ONE: case OPTION_ONE_SIMILAR: doSomeStuff1(); break; // EXIT the switch case OPTION_TWO_WITH_PRE_ACTION: doPreActionStuff2(); // the default is to CONTINUE to next case case OPTION_TWO: doSomeStuff2(); break; // EXIT the switch case OPTION_THREE: doSomeStuff3(); break; // EXIT the switch } Now all you know that break statements are required, because the switch will continue to the next case when break statement is missing. We have an example of that with OPTION_LIKE_ONE, OPTION_ONE_SIMILAR and OPTION_TWO_WITH_PRE_ACTION. The problem is that we only need this "skip to next case" very very very rarely. And very often we put break at the end of case. It very easy for a beginner to forget about it.   I've been trying to initialize a map of <ints, vector<ints> > using the new 0X standard, but I cannot seem to get the syntax correct. I'd like to make a map with a single entry with key:value = 1:<3,4 #include <initializer_list> #include <map> #include <vector> using namespace std; map<int, vector<int> > A = {1,{3,4}}; .... It dies with the following error using gcc 4.4.3: error: no matching function for call to std::map<int,std::vector<int,std::allocator<int> >,std::less<int>,std::allocator<std::pair<const int,std::vector<int,std::allocator<int> > > > >::map(<brace-enclosed initializer list>) Edit Following the suggestion by Cogwheel and adding the extra brace it now compiles with a warning that can be gotten rid of using the -fno-deduce-init-list flag. Is there any danger in doing so?

• Web Project for F#

  I am building a project system for Visual Studio MVC web projects with controllers written in F#. It comes along pretty cool. I can build and run the apps, but I have a problem with FSharp Language Service. In the editor it shows the syntax colorization and diagnostic as it should. With one problem - it does not pick up project references. Even though during build it picks them up and successfully builds the project, on the screen it shows the objects/namespaces from the referenced assemblies/projects as unresolved. If somebody out here has some knowledge about integrating with F# Language service - please help me make it work In response to Tomas: The code for F# controllers is in the project file and as I already mentioned I can compile and run it. Originally we kept the F# code in a separate project and desire to get rid of this extra complexity is what prompted this project. It is not a ASP.MVC though it is Bistro MVC. Edit BistroMVC now solves this problem in the latest version of the Bistro Designer which is based on the F# project extender

• Output columns not in destination table?

  SUMMARY: I need to use an OUTPUT clause on an INSERT statement to return columns which don't exist on the table into which I'm inserting. If I can avoid it, I don't want to add columns to the table to which I'm inserting. DETAILS: My FinishedDocument table has only one column. This is the table into which I'm inserting. FinishedDocument -- DocumentID My Document table has two columns. This is the table from which I need to return data. Document -- DocumentID -- Description The following inserts one row into FinishedDocument. Its OUTPUT clause returns the DocumentID which was inserted. This works, but it doesn't give me the Description of the inserted document. INSERT INTO FinishedDocument OUTPUT INSERTED.DocumentID SELECT DocumentID FROM Document WHERE DocumentID = @DocumentID I need to return from the Document table both the DocumentID and the Description of the matching document from the INSERT. What syntax do I need to pull this off? I'm thinking it's possible only with the one INSERT statement, by tweaking the OUTPUT clause (in a way I clearly don't understand)? Is there a smarter way that doesn't resemble the path I'm going down here? EDIT: SQL Server 2005

  In my web application, I create some framework that use to bind model data to control on page. Each model property has some rule like string length, not null and regular expression. Before submit page, framework validate any binded control with defined rules. So, I want to detect what character that is allowed in each regular expression rule like the following example. "^[0-9]$" allow only digit characters like 1, 2, 3. "^[a-zA-Z_][a-zA-Z_-0-9]+$" allow only a-z, - and _ characters However, this function should not care about grouping, positioning of allowed character. It just tells about possible characters only. By the way, complex regular expression like find two words near(\bword1\W+(?:\w+\W+){1,6}?word2\b) must be ignore to verify and it should return any characters is possible. Do you have any idea for creating this function? PS. I know it easy to create specified function like numeric only for allowing only digit characters. But I need share/reuse same piece of code both data tier(contains all model validator) and UI tier without modify anything. Thanks

• In C/C++ mode in Emacs, change face of code in #if 0...#endif block to comment face

  I'm trying to add functionality found in some other code editors to my Emacs configuration, whereby C/C++ code within #if 0...#endif blocks is automatically set to the comment face/font. Based on my testing, cpp-highlight-mode does something like what I want, but requires user action. It seems like tying into the font-lock functionality is the correct option to make the behavior automatic. I have successfully followed examples in the GNU documentation to change the face of single-line regular expressions. For example: (add-hook 'c-mode-common-hook (lambda () (font-lock-add-keywords nil '(("\\<\\(FIXME\\|TODO\\|HACK\\|fixme\\|todo\\|hack\\)" 1 font-lock-warning-face t))))) works fine to highlight debug related keywords anywhere in a file. However, I am having problems matching #if 0...#endif as a multiline regular expression. I found some useful information in this post (How to compose region like ""), that suggested that Emacs must be told specifically to allow for multiline matches. But this code: (add-hook 'c-mode-common-hook (lambda () '(progn (setq font-lock-multiline t) (font-lock-add-keywords nil '(("#if 0\\(.\\|\n\\)*?#endif" 1 font-lock-comment-face t)))))) still does not work for me. Perhaps my regular expression is wrong (though it appears to work using M-x re-builder), I've messed up my syntax, or I'm following the wrong approach entirely. I'm using Aquamacs 2.1 (which is based on GNU Emacs 23.2.50.1) on OS X 10.6.5, if that makes a difference. Any assistance would be appreciated!

  I'm creating a CSS editor and am trying to create a regular expression that can get data from a CSS document. This regex works if I have one property but I can't get it to work for all properties. I'm using preg/perl syntax in PHP. • CodeIgniter site in subdirectory, htaccess file maybe interfering with htaccess file in main directory?

  In my CodeIgniter site, navigating to any page but the index gives me this error: No input file specified. Googling around, it seems like the cause must have something to do with my .htaccess situation. The way this is set up, and maybe this can eventually change, is that my CI site is in a subdirectory of the main domain. The CI site and main domain each have their own .htaccess files. The CI htacess file is located in the applications folder: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /SubDomain/index.php?$1 [L] </IfModule> And here's the main htaccess file is two levels up from the CI one, reading thusly: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80 rewriterule ^(.*)$ https://www.MainDomain.org/$1 [r=301,nc] I am afraid these two sets of re-write rules are conflicting with each other and I really have no idea what to do about it. I can alter either htaccess file and would really like to get them working together in peace and harmony. It's also possible, however, that this has nothing whatsoever to do with htaccess. Also, it's hosted on GoDaddy.

  Hi, I'm attempting to build a set of conditions dynamically using an array as suggested in the first answer here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1658990/one-or-more-params-in-model-find-conditions-with-ruby-on-rails. However I seem to be doing something incorrectly and I'm not sure if what I'm trying is fundamentally unsound or if I'm simply botching my syntax. I'm simplifying down to a single condition here to try to illustrate the issue as I've tried to built a simple Proof of concept along these lines before layering on the 5 different condition styles I'm contending with. This works: excluded.push 12 excluded.push 30 @allsites = Site.all(:conditions => ["id not in (?)", excluded]) This results in a private method 'scan' called error: excluded.push 12 excluded.push 30 conditionsSet << ["id not in (?)", excluded] @allsites = Site.all(:conditions => conditionsSet) Thanks for any advice. I wasn't sure if the proper thing was to put this as a followup item to the related question/answers I noted at the top. Since I've got a problem not an answer. If there is a better way to post this related to the existing post please let me know.

  I want to add additional criteria to the LEFT OUTER JOIN generated by the :include option in ActiveRecord finder. class Post has_many :comments end class Comment belongs_to :post has_many :comment_votes end class CommentVote belongs_to :comment end Now lets say I want to find last 10 posts with their associated comments and the up comment votes. Post.find.all(:limit => 10, :order => "created_at DESC", :include => [{:comments => :comment_votes]) I cant add the condition to check for up votes as it will ignore the posts without the up votes. So the condition has to go the ON clause of the JOIN generated for the comment_votes. I am wishing for a syntax such as: Post.find.all(:limit => 10, :order => "created_at DESC", :include => [{:comments => [:comment_votes, :on => "comment_votes.vote > 0"]) Have you faced such problems before? Did you managed to solve the problem using the current finder? I hope to hear some interesting ideas from the community. PS: I can write a join SQL to get the expected result and stitch the results together. I want to make sure there is no other alternative before going down that path.

  I am building a suite of batch jobs that require regular access to a database, running on a Solaris 10 machine. Because of (unchangable) design constraints, we are required use a certain program to connect to it. Said interface requires us to pass a plain-text password over a command line to connect to the database. This is a terrible security practice, but we are stuck with it. I am trying to make sure things are properly secured on our end. Since the processing is automated (ie, we can't prompt for a password), and I can't store anything outside the disk, I need a strategy for storing our password securely. Here are some basic rules The system has multiple users. We can assume that our permissions are properly enforced (ie, if a file with a is chmod'd to 600, it won't be publically readable) I don't mind anyone with superuser access looking at our stored password Here is what i've got so far Store password in password.txt $chmod 600 password.txt Process reads from password.txt when it's needed Buffer overwritten with zeros when it's no longer needed Although I'm sure there is a better way.

• Using java to create a logistic model - arrays and properties

  I'm currently trying to create a java model that will solve a problem we have. On a voluntary expedition each week we have some people leaving and some new people arriving. Accommodation is in tents. The tents sleep different numbers of people and certain rules apply. Males and females cannot be mixed and volunteers can be one of four types - school children/ research assistants/ scientific staff/ school teachers So types of volunteer and sexes cannot be mixed. Each week the manager spends hours trying to work this out so I've offered to make this model to keep my coding skills up. At present I'm working with arrays. Each tent is a 2D array [4][x] where x is the number of people it sleeps (each person sleeping there has 4 attributes). Each person is a 1D array with 4 attributes [4]. The idea is to check where people can go, cause the minimum movement for people staying on and solve this logistic problem. Does anyone have any better suggestions as to how to solve this? At present I'm finding it necessary to write a lot of code setting up and querying arrays. Any help is appreciated.

• Ftp throws WebException only in .NET 4.0
