• Cannot authenticate to SBS 2003

  I am trying to connect my machine to my work's entirely windows network and I am having a few issues: Whenever I try to access the server, the authentication dialog just keeps popping back up. I cannot connect to the printers (it says connecting to device failed) I have tried setting up samba, winbind, kerberos, likewise open all to no avail. I have a feeling I am just setting them up wrong. My nautilus shows this when I go to Network Windows Network MASTERMAGNETS I can ping both MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL and 192.168.0.2 after modifying my /etc/hosts james@jamesmaddison:~$ cat /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost jamesmaddison 192.168.0.2 MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL 192.168.0.50 Sharp-Printer # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback fe00::0 ip6-localnet ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix ff02::1 ip6-allnodes ff02::2 ip6-allrouters I believe that's the correct domain (not sure if that's the correct term) as when I do nslookup MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL I get the following: james@jamesmaddison:~$ nslookup MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL Server: 192.168.0.2 Address: 192.168.0.2#53 Name: MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL Address: 192.168.0.3 Name: MASTERMAGNETS.LOCAL Address: 192.168.0.2 It all worked fine before I reinstalled Ubuntu and now I just cannot get access to the server. All help is appreciated, I need to get this working or I fear I will be forced to develop in a windows environment :(

• Configuring Samba to allow Use of CUPS printer

  Having trouble with samba printing. I have a CUPS printer installed on an Ubuntu 11.04 server and that works great. When I try to configure samba to allow an XP machine to use the printer, it fails when printing. I can install the printer drivers for XP from the server and the printer appears in the XP printer control panels. • Implementing the NetBeans Project API on Maven in IntelliJ IDEA

  James McGivern, one of the speakers I met at JAX London, is creating media software on the NetBeans Platform. However, he's using Maven and IntelliJ IDEA and one of the features he needs is project support, i.e., the project infrastructure that's part of NetBeans IDE. The two documents that describe the NetBeans Project API are these: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-projecttype.html http://netbeans.dzone.com/how-create-maven-nb-project-type By combining the above two, you'll understand how to create a project infrastructure on top of the NetBeans Platform with Maven. However, an additional step of complexity is added when IntelliJ IDEA is included into the mix and therefore I created the following screencast which, in 15 minutes, puts all the pieces together. Be aware that I'm probably not using IntelliJ IDEA and Maven as optimally as I could and I'm publishing this at least partly so that the errors of my ways can be pointed out to me. • Test-Driven Development with plain C: manage multiple modules

  I am new to test-driven development, but I'm loving it. There is, however, a main problem that prevents me from using it effectively. I work for embedded medical applications, plain C, with safety issues. Suppose you have module A that has a function A_function() that I want to test. This function call a function B_function, implemented in module B. I want to decouple the module so, as James Grenning teaches, I create a Mock module B that implements a mock version of B_function. However the day comes when I have to implement module B with the real version of B_function. Of course the two B_function can not live in the same executable, so I don't know how to have a unique "launcher" to test both modules. James Grenning way out is to replace, in module A, the call to B_function with a function pointer that can have the value of the mock or the real function according to the need. However I work in a team, and I can not justify this decision that would make no sense if it were not for the test, and no one asked me explicitly to use test-driven approach. Maybe the only way out is to generate different a executable for each module. Any smarter solution? Thank you

  I've been using googlecl successfully to add events to my calendar. Things like: google calendar add "call Paul tomorrow at 8:30am" work great, and add the appropriate event t the right time. But no reminder is added for the event. I tried: google calendar add "call Paul tomorrow at 8:30am reminder 10 minutes" and other combinations. It just ends up adding the "reminder" instruction to the event description. What's the syntax I should use to add a, let's say, 10 minutes pop-up reminder? Thanks

• Outlook 2011 Contact Import from CSV with Notes containing new lines / cr / lf

  I'm trying to import several thousand contacts into Outlook 2011 for Mac. Everything is working well except the Notes field as I cannot figure out how to get new lines / carriage returns into it. There is no documentation for the exact format that Outlook supports. After searching the web and experimenting I have tried: Creating a single contact in Outlook with Notes containing several lines of text. I then export the contact to a csv, deleting the contact in Outlook, then re-import. All lines in Notes merge together :-/ Following tips I found such as containing new lines around quotes. e.g. http://creativyst.com/Doc/Articles/CSV/CSV01.htm (search for line-break) Switching the CSV format from DOS to Unix, experimenting using manually injected ctrl-characters such as ^M etc. I would include an example export/import but unfortunately the the new breaks included do not work well in a SU code block.

• Powerpoint missing from DCOM config

  I have an application that automates the creation of powerpoint files in an ASP.NET environment. This requires that I install powerpoint on the server and also set permissions in the DCOM configuration snap-in (dcomcnfg) to give permissions to the launching user ([DOMAIN]\ASPNET in this case) to run the application. I have this setup running successfully on several Win2k3 machines. I am configuring my first Win2k8 machine and after installing powerpoint on the server, the "Microsoft Powerpoint Presentation" node in DCOM config is not showing up. Other installed Office apps are showing (Excel, Graph, etc...), just not Powerpoint. So when I attempt to run the application, I get an "Access denied" error, which is exactly what I would expect. The user doesn't have permission. Therefore, access denied. The specific error log entry is: The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {91493441-5A91-11CF-8700-00AA0060263B} to the user [DOMAIN]\ASPNET I searched the entire list for the CLSID, too, thinking maybe the name wasn't loading properly. No dice. I also re-ran the setup program for Office thinking maybe there would be some option or something I unchecked in the custom setup options, but I saw nothing that looked helpful. I'm flummoxed. Can anyone out there suggest something to help me get Powerpoint to show up in the list of DCOM applications? Many thanks.

• PHP suddenly failed after IIS update

  All my application pools were stopped this morning after I got to work. I can restart them, but when I try to load the website the app pool crashes again. Update: I've looked in the GAC as the error below suggests and it seems that the file is not there. How do I get it back? Update 2: I found a further error in the event log saying The Module name FastCgiModule path C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetsrv\iisfcgi.dll returned an error from registration. The data is the error. So following the information from here http://forums.iis.net/t/1153937.aspx I removed CGI and my sites are working again. This has fixed the initial problem, but now I don't have FastCGI so I'm fairly sure that PHP will no longer be working (I don't have any PHP at the moment to test). • ssh + tinyproxy: poor performance

  I am currently in China and I would like to still visit some blocked websites (facebook, youtube). I have VPS in the USA and I have installed tinyproxy on it. I log in on my VPS with SSH port-forwarding and I have configured my browser appropriately. Everything works more or less: I can surf to those websites but everything is inusually slow and sometimes data transfer stops abruptly. • Name resolution for the name <name> timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

  Installed Windows 7 (previously ran XP and Vista with no problems) a couple of weeks ago and I'm at least once a day getting the above error show up in the event logs and losing all internet connection. The only current way to resolve it is to reboot my cable modem. My ISP have been running diagnostics on it and tell me there is no problem whatsoever. I've configured my router (and PC on occasion) to point at OpenDNS - still occurs. I've had the PC directly connected to the modem - still occurs. If I can give more info that might of use please ask thanks Update: After moaning at my ISP for a couple of weeks (VirginMedia) they agreed to send me out a new cable modem ... and I've not had the issue since.

• Excel error "This workbook contains Excel 4.0 macros or Excel 5.0 modules"

  I have a workbook that was protected via the Protect Workbook feature. It was sent to someone else to modify. When they sent it back, it was unprotected and when I try to reprotect it I get this error, "This workbook contains Excel 4.0 macros or Excel 5.0 modules. If you would like to password protect or restrict permission to this document, you need to remove these macros." I looked and there are no new macros in the edited file. The original file contained the same macros and it was able to be write protected, so I'm not sure why the modified file is having a problem. What are common causes and solutions for this error and does it make sense for the modified file to have the error when the original doesn't?

  Installed Solr on my Windows XP PC. Tomcat seems to be working fine. Cannot get Solr to work. I noticed the TrieDateField is declared in a file called schema.xml in the SolrHome directory. We've tried running sshd on port 22 and port 80 I'm guessing that it's not a firewall problem since the verbose output reports that the connection is established. I don't see anything in /var/log/auth.log when the failing user connects. I do see entries when I log in successfully.

• Pain removing a perl rootkit

  So, we host a geoservice webserver thing at the office. Someone apparently broke into this box (probably via ftp or ssh), and put some kind of irc-managed rootkit thing. Now I'm trying to clean the whole thing up, I found the process pid who tries to connect via irc, but i can't figure out who's the invoking process (already looked with ps, pstree, lsof) The process is a perl script owned by www user, but ps aux |grep displays a fake file path on the last column. Is there another way to trace that pid and catch the invoker? • How to set ulimits in Solaris 10

  I normally use pam_limits.so and /etc/security/limits.conf to set ulimits on filesize/cputime etc for the regular users logging in to my server running Ubuntu. Can anyone give the best way of doing similar with Solaris 10. I think it is done using /etc/system but have no idea what to add to the file or indeed if it is the correct file. I'm particularly interested in setting up ulimit -f without going down the .profile route.
