• [PHP] Version Changes: How considerable are the compatibility issues in project?

  For example if we consider ActionScript2.0(based on Objects but programming does not implement much OOP ) vs 3.0(highly OOP) its like a whole new scripting language in the sense of approach, programming style,features you get the idea. In PHP we can see current versions going from 3-5. brief version changes Question :Developers who work on PHP is it easy to migrate from version to version? Question :Are there any extensive compatibility issues, forward or backward? Question :Does your project stick to a particular version till the end ? I go to the 3rd step which is the preparing to install ubuntu . and it check everything is going right ,no red x marks. and below the dialogue there is optional choices download update while installing install third-party software and here is the problem If I choose any of those or if I don't and just continue the mouse pointer is just freezing for hours and I don't access the next step I hope you got what I mean and thank you .

  It is that time again.  Time to polish up you presentation skills on your favorite language or technology features.  The Chicago Code Camp is accepting proposals for presentations.  Show everyone in the Chicago area what you know and submit your own. I really enjoyed presenting last year and just had to submit a proposal for this year.  This time around my topic is Increasing Collaboration with Windows Phone 7, SharePoint 2010 and Office Open XML.  I had a much longer title but the site forced me to shorten it up.  I guess that is a good way to tell people not to get too wordy. • What are the warning signs of impending doom to watch out for on a project?

  Having worked on a failed project is one of the few things that most programmers have in common, regardless of language used, industry or experience. These projects can be great learning experiences, soul-crushing disasters (or both!), and can occur for a multitude of reasons: upper management change of heart under-skilled / under-resourced team emergence of superior competitor during dev cycle over/under management Once you've worked on a couple of such projects, is it possible to recognise at an early stage exactly when a project is doomed to fail? For me, a big sign is having a hard & fast external deadline combined with feature creep. I've seen projects which were well planned out and proceeding right on schedule go horribly off the rails once the late feature requests started to roll in and get added to the final "deliverable". The proposers of these requests earned the nickname of Columbo, due to rarely leaving the room without asking for "just one more thing". What are the warning signs you look out for that set off the alarm bells of impending doom in your head?

• How do you go about training a replacement?

  I recently asked about leaving a position and got a lot of great answers. One of the common threads was that being around to train the new person would be expected and could go a long way. Now considering that (I think) most people don't stay at a company for a long time after they've given notice, and it will take time for the company to interview/hire one - that leaves for a short amount of time to get someone up to speed. I've also never trained anyone before. I did a bunch of tutoring in University and College, but teaching a language/technology is far different from training someone to replace you on your job. So the question is: how do you go about training someone to replace you in a, potentially, short amount of time?

• Is there a good book to grok C++?

  This question got me thinking. I would say I am a pretty experienced C++ programmer. I use it a lot at work, I had some courses on it at the university, I can understand most C++ code I find out there without problems. Other languages you can pretty much learn by using them. But every time I use a new C++ library or check out some new C++ code by someone I did not know before, I discover a new set of idioms C++ has to offer. Basically, this has lead me to believe that there is a lot of stuff in C++ that might be worth knowing but that is not easily discoverable. So, is there a good book for a somewhat experienced C++ programmer to step up the game? You know, to kind of 'get' that language the way you can 'get' Ruby or Objective-C, where everything just suddenly makes sense and you start instinctively knowing 'that C++ way of thing'?

• Sprites as Actors

  Hello, I'm not experienced in GameDev questions, but as a programmer. In the language Scala, you can have scalable multi-tasking with Actors, very stable, as I hear. You can even habe hundreds of thousands of them running at once without a problem. So I thought, maybe you can use these as a base class for 2D-Sprites, to break out of the game-loop thing that requires to go through all the sprites and move them. They'd basically move themselves, event-driven. Would that make sense for a game? Having it multitasked like that? After all, it will run on the JVM, though that should not be much of a problem nowadays.

• junior / professional / senior categorization

  Hey guys, is it just me or is the categorization of developer levels highly subjective? I get the feeling that every company tries to hire experienced developers as juniors because they don't know $technology. For example my own career: I switched technologies a couple of times, while sticking to java as a programming language. For example I first worked for 3 years using JavaSE technologies, the next company I worked for hired me as junior because I didn't have JavaEE experience - while still selling me as professional level to customers (I work in consulting). The next company hired me again as junior because I didn't have SAP experience - they mostly work with SAP Java technologies which is definitely a niche. Still, they are selling all their technology consultants for exactly the same rate while paying them significantly different wages. Now when switching jobs again I feel like this whole thing is going to start all over again because I don't have Spring experience or Oracle knowledge. tl;dr = is my observation totally off base that companies are just using these categorizations as means to keep down wages?

• PHP developer wanting to learn python

  I'm pretty familiar at this point with PHP (Javascript, too), up to the point of OOP in PHP, and am looking to branch out my knowledge. I'm looking at Python next, but a lot of it is a bit alien to me as a PHP developer. I'm less concerned about learning the language itself. I'm positive there's plenty of good resources, documentation and libraries to help me get the code down. I'm less sure about the technical aspects of how to set up a dev environment, unit testing and other more mundane details that are very important, aid in rapid development, but aren't as widely covered. Are there any good resources out there for this?

• Is there such a thing as too much experience?

  For modern software developers in today's world, is there such a thing as having too much experience with a certain technology or programming language? To a recruiter, interviewer, or company hiring-- could there often be cases where a particular candidate has so much experience in a certain area or technology where it works against the candidate to being hired? I'm not talking about cases where a senior developer is applying for an entry-level developer position, and has a lot of experience in that sense. Nor am I talking about cases where a candidate is outright lying (e.g. 20+ years experience with Ruby on Rails). I've overheard this in conversations between hiring managers/developers during happy hours, yet I'm not quite sure I fully understand what they mean.

OpenJDK (Open Java Development Kit) is a free and open source implementation of the Java programming language. It is the result of an effort Sun Microsystems began in 2006. The implementation is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) with a linking exception. Why there are still people that say Java is not open source or free as in free speech ? Am I missing something? Is Java still privative ?

• What languages are most commonly used in medical research?

  For someone about to go into a career in medical research, what language would be the most useful to learn? From my limited experience (I have been a researcher in mathematics and in finance) I have been able to recommend looking at R (for statistics) Matlab (for general numeric processing) and Python (for general purpose programming with statistics/numerics as an add-on) but I don't know which of those (if any) are in common use -- or if there are other, more specialized languages that are used. To be clear, I'm not talking about a professional programmer working in a medical setting. I am talking about a medical or genetics researcher who uses programming to analyse data, or generally to help get their work done.

• Proposal for a new position at work

  I have an idea at work for a new Product Manager position at our office. I work with several developers, and it would be helpful to have someone working in a type of "Scrum Master" capacity, dividing out assignments and making sure they get complete. This position does not currently exist, however I feel that I have enough evidence to indicate that it be very helpful for our business. What is the best way to present this proposal to my boss? Is there a specific template that you know of for new position? It should be able to describe the qualification for the position, their responsibilities, and what metrics we would use to measure them. Thanks. I was wondering what other languages I would need to learn and also what kinda development tools I should use. Also, what would be the best type of language to write a website like this. • Why use link classes in oql instead of classes that contain links

  itop abstracts its very complex database design with an object query language (oql). For this there are classes definded, like 'Ticket' and 'Server'. Now a Ticket usually is linked to a Server. In my naive way I would give the Ticket class an attribute 'affected_server_list', where I could reference the affected servers. itop does it different: neither Servers nor Tickets know of each other. Instead there is a class 'linkTicketToServer', which provides the link between the two. The first thing I noticed is that it makes oql queries more complex. So I wondered why they designed it this way. One thing that occured to me is that it allows for more flexiblity, in that I can add links without modifying the original classes. Is this allready why one would implement it this way, or are there other reasons for this kind of design?

• How much to charge Ruby on Rails Website [closed]

  I figured it be appropriate to ask this question on webmasters, over the stackoverflow site seeing as there are similar questions here. I am freelancing for a client in the Boston area, who has the html/css templates for their site made by another web designer. They are basically looking for someone to set up the template, and then make the backend so that a user can purchase music on their site (they are musicians). I am wondering then what would be an appropriate amount to charge them to develop such a system, I am a student, and this would be my 3rd Ruby on Rails project, but probably at least the 20 web design project I have been hired to do and I have other programming knowledge, Python, C, etc. I am thinking of suggesting that they pay 1000usd to set up such a system, but I don't know if this is appropriate. To me it seems justifiable given my experience, and the low end of RoR developers I have seen charging 25usd/hr all the way up to 150usd/hr. Any advice would be appreciated.

• Can this navigation be done completely in CSS [migrated]

  I am a little stuck. I have created almost everything in the picture below. What I am stuck on is I am trying to figure out how I would set it up so that when a user clicks one of the links it makes the line below become red (after the next page loads). Obviously I would need to use Jquery to detect the page then add inline css, but what I am struggling with is I want this to be as easy as possible so that I can give this template to others and then they can add or remove items as necessary. I was trying to figure out if I could somehow use a li element to do this but I have not found a way yet. Does anyone have any ideas to help me?

• I can't program because old coding style. This is normal to programmers?

  I'm in my first real job as programmer, but I can't solve any problems because of the coding style used. The code here: don't have comments don't have functions (50, 100, 200, 300 or more lines executed in sequence) uses a lot of if statements with a lot of paths has variables that make no sense (eg.: cf_cfop, CF_Natop, lnom, r_procod) uses a language I am unfamiliar with (Visual FoxPro 8 from 2002) I feel like I have gone back to 1970. Is it normal for a programmer familiar with OOP, clean-code, design patterns, etc. to have trouble with coding in this old-fashion way?

• Are there programming languages that allow you to do set arithmetic on types?

  Out of curiosity, are there languages that allow you to do set arithmetic on types to create new types? Something like: interface A { void a(); void b(); } interface B { void b(); void c(); } interface C = A & B; // has b() interface D = A | B; // has a(), b() and c() interface E = (A & B) ^ B; // has c() I know that in some languages these ideas can be expressed (i.e., Java has List<Comparable & Serializable> for the union of the interfaces) but I've never heard of a language that supports type arithmetic.
