  • Virtualmin install failing on Rackspace Debian 5.0

    Hi - Running the install.sh script as-is from Virtualmin (GPL version), I get a dovecot error after about 5.5mins of installation. I have tried this on several versions of the server - same error whether or not I run apt-get update +/- apt-get upgrade .... and whether or not I have the FQDN set.   • What is the best way to downscale mp4 video while keeping it as sharp as possible?

    I've got an .mp4 file that's currently 830x1100 (it's a screencast) that I need to resize down to 114x150. I've been experimenting for hours with ffmpeg settings and nothing comes out looking nice and sharp. The original file looks decent, and I can't figure out why the downscaling makes it look so blurry. Unfortunately I can't share the video because it contains a walkthrough for software that hasn't yet been released.

  • iReport for NetBeans IDE 7.4

    A few days ago the iReport Team announced the new 5.5.0 iReport release. With it comes the latest iReport plugin for NetBeans IDE 7.4. The NetBeans iReport plugin is by FAR the most downloaded plugin on the NetBeans Plugin Portal. Here's a direct link to it: http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/4425/ireport I installed the plugin into NetBeans IDE 7.4 today and made this small (and silent) movie of the main cool features I found. Sorry it's a bit blurry, comes from conversion from MPEG to AVI. Many thanks to Giulio Toffoli from Jaspersoft for continually enhancing the plugin from release to release, it's really awesome, provides a massive bunch of reporting features, fully justifying the popularity of this plugin.   • LightFish, Adam Bien's lightweight telemetry application

    Adam Bien (Java Champion, JavaEE expert, book author, etc...), has been a GlassFish enthusiast for a while and he proves it again with his new open source project - LightFish, a lightweight monitoring and visualization application for GlassFish. Adam has a short intro and screencast about this standalone WAR application. The tool uses the new JavaEE 6 self-described JDBC connection and the GlassFish-bundled Derby database to provide drag-and-drop install. At runtime, once monitoring is enabled, calls to the RESTful admin API for GlassFish are emitted from a JavaFX dashboard plotting in real-time telemetry data on charts and graphs, including data for "Paranormal Activity".   • Issue with CSS font color in Webkit in Lion (#444 looks darker than #333)

    I have a strange issue with Safari and Chrome Mac (19.0.1084.54) in OS X Lion. Here it is, very simply put: When I display it in a Webkit browser, text set in Helvetica Neue and color Hex #444 looks a little bolder, and therefore darker, than the same text with an Hex color value of #333. This does not happen at all in Snow Leopard with the exact same browsers (same version). Happens on any website I tried, so I know it's not something related to the CSS of my website. I tried to change it live through the Inspector and it really shows up. I'm working on more screencasts like that, from different angles. For example, one will methodically explain each and every window in NetBeans IDE; another will step through the creation of an application from conception to deployment; while another will focus on the NetBeans IDE extension points and how easily they can be used to add new features to NetBeans IDE. The screencast approach has, I think, a lot of advantages. They take less time to make and they seem to be more effective, in several ways, than tutorials. Hearing someone talk through a scenario seems to also put things in a clearer perspective than when you have everything written out in a document, where small details get lost and diversions are more difficult to make. Anyway, onwards to more screencasts. Any special requests?

  • Grab sound of a SDL game with ffmpeg/avconv

    I'm trying to make a screencast of a SDL game which I developed some years ago, with the following command: sleep 5 && avconv -f x11grab -s 1366x768 -r 25 -i :0.0 -same_quant screen_cast.mkv (in this 5 seconds of sleep, I open the game). But the generated video (screen_cast.mkv) doesn't capture audio. I use for my game the SDL_Mixer library, with default configuration (22050 for frequency, AUDIO_S16SYS for format, and 2 channels). What's the problem? (with options -f alsa -i pulse it doesn't work either).

  • Will Google Analytics track URLs that just redirect?

    I have a link on my site. That links goes to another URL on my site. The code on the server sees that resource being requested and redirects the browser to another website. Will Google Analytics be able to know that the user requested the URL from my server and was redirected? Specifically, I set up a /buy link on my watchmecode.net site to try and track who is clicking the "Buy & Download" button. This link/button hits my server, and my server immediately does a redirect to the PayPal processing so the user can buy the screencast. Is Google Analytics going to know that the user hit the /buy URL on my site, and track that for me? If not, what can I do to make that happen?

It contains HTML and CSS-based design templates for typography, forms, buttons, navigation and other interface components, as well as optional JavaScript extensions. It is the most popular project on GitHub and has been used by NASA and MSNBC among others." (Wikipedia) Normally, when you read "getting started" instructions for Twitter Bootstrap, you're told to download various things from various sites. Then you're told to set up various folders and files, etc. What if it could be much simpler than that? Spend 7 minutes with me in this (silent) screencast and you'll see a complete development environment for developing applications with Twitter Bootstrap: Two things that could be added to the movie are the JavaScript debugger, the support for responsive design via switching between form factors in the embedded browser and Chrome with the NetBeans plugin, as well as how to convert the application to a native Android or iOS package via in-built Cordova support.

  • wine and aptitude

    I'm trying to install Wine on Ubuntu Precise. I'm used to using aptitude for package management, so I tried to use that to install Wine. When I do that, I'm told I have to resolve dependencies that end up leaving me with 21 packages being uninstalled! However, when I try to install with apt-get, it appears to work fine.
