  • Help me choose between Go and Io

    - by Robert Smith
During the following months I'll have some spare time so I thought of picking up a new programming language.I've been reading some articles about Go and Io and both of them look interesting and very promising so I'm stuck making a decision about which one to pick up next. I'm mainly interested in distributed systems and concurrency. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • reading binary datafile and writing into decimal no file

    - by swaroop b banerjee
exp data is generated by my mc scaler card as a binary file with first 511 bytes as header and then 24 bit data followed by four bit roi data. i am not a expert in programming. i do understand a little. I would like to convert this file into a file (without header) decimal nos with first col as channel no (1 to 8191) then the data (24 bit) then the Roi data (4 bit). I am looking for source code in c or qbasic. thanks

  • Why is the volatile qualifier used through out std::atomic?

    - by Caspin
From what I've read from Herb Sutter and others you would think that volatile and concurrent programming were completely orthogonal concepts, at least as far as C/C++ are concerned. However, in GCC c++0x extension all of std::atomic's member functions have the volatile qualifier. The same is true in Anthony Williams's implementation of std::atomic. So what's deal, do my atomic<> variables need be volatile or not?

  • How to export image from Air app directly into a powerpoint slide programmatically

    - by user306584
Apologies if this has been answered before or if it's too obvious - pointers are greatly appreciated if this is the case. What I'm trying to do: 1) have a way to save / copy screenshot from an Air app 2) automatically paste such screenshot into a new powerpoint slide in the current presentation I have part 1 down but have no idea on how to do part 2 - I have very little experience with programming around MS apps. thank you. f

  • Can SATA be used to connect computers?

    - by André
Can SATA be used to connect two computers together, just like a crossover Ethernet cable would do ? I know SATA has no "networking" features and even though a controller may have multiple ports, the drives don't "see" each other, and that in SATA one device acts as the host (the computer) and the other device is some kind of "client" (the storage drive). But still, did anyone attempt to make a kernel module that would make one computer appear as a "client" (so that the host's SATA controller detects it as a standard hard drive) and then set up like a pseudo-Ethernet link or a very high speed serial link (and then run pppd on it and do networking) ? Note : I know this is an unprofessional and totally stupid idea, I'm just asking out of curiosity.

  • TreeView Controls - HTREEVIEW

    - by nXqd
I'm new to win32 API programming and I try to understand source code of treeview from codeproject. But I really don't understand this : BOOL TreeView::DoNotify(HWND hWnd, UINT msg, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam) { // blah blah HTREEVIEW Selected = (HTREEITEM)SendDlgItemMessage(hWnd,ID_TREE,TVM_GETNEXTITEM,TVGN_CARET,(LPARAM)Selected); // halb halb } It doesn't work ( Selected is used without initializing) until I declare Selected as global variable. Thanks for reading this and I need your help .

  • Executing Javascript without a browser?

    - by Daniel
I am looking into Javascript programming without a browser. I want to run scripts from the Linux or Mac OS X command line, much like we run any other scripting language (ruby, php, perl, python...) $ javascript my_javascript_code.js I looked into spider monkey (Mozilla) and v8 (Google), but both of these appear to be embedded. Is anyone using Javascript as a scripting language to be executed from the command line? If anyone is curious why I am looking into this, I've been poking around node.js

  • How to skip parentheses on Netbeans with enter?

    - by nunos
So I have been programming in C++ with Eclipse and have the habit of hitting enter to skip parentheses (anyone who has ever used eclipse probably knows what I am talking about). I have recently started learning Java and decided to use NetBeans, mostly due to the much more simple interface. However, I would like to know if there a way to skip the (), [], < and "" on enter just like what happens in Eclipse in NetBeans. Thanks.

  • How do you write your QTP Tests?

    - by Josh Harris
I am experimenting with using QTP for some webapp ui automation testing and I was wondering how people usually write their QTP tests. Do you use the object map, descriptive programming, a combination or some other way all together? Any little code example would be appreciated, Thank you

  • Dynamic UI vs Static UI

    - by Damien
I've been wondering, at what point should I give up the convenience of a static data entry form with designer support for a dynamic UI which removes a lot of code duplication? There seems to be a conflict in the programming world where people constantly try to remove code repetition to improve maintainability and yet when it comes to forms, that all goes out of the window and everything gets added explicitly to the forms. What signs should I look for to know when it's time to leave the designer in the dust and create a dynamic UI?

  • Objective-C Array/List Question

    - by Dave C
What is the best practice, even in general programming, when you have an undefined, possibly infinite, amount of items that you need in an array but don't have defined bounds. Can you define an endless array in objective c that you can keep pushing items onto, like other lanaguages have a list item. Thanks for any help.

  • HP Envy 14, Ubuntu 10.10 and trouble with the graphics cards

    - by Carsten Gehling
A few days ago I bought a HP Envy 14, containing 2 graphics card: An integrated Intel graphics card, and an ATI HD 5650. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on the machine. Most things work fine out of the box, but the graphics cards are giving me trouble. When booting, I get the message "failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled". Then the screen blanks out during the remaining boot period. I am able to get the display working by changing to one of the consoles, then closing and opening the laptop's lid. It seems that Ubuntu gets confused about which card to use. I've read here: http://www.andreas-demmer.de/en/2010/07/18/testbericht-linux-auf-dem-hp-envy-14 that I should be able to turn off one the cards by echoing keywords into /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch, but that path is not available on my system. The BIOS does not have any methods to switch of the ATI card. Help anyone? /Carsten

  • Why there is no open source framework (like Java) for C# application development?

    - by Calvin
Hi, C# is much more popular than Java in recent years. As a general-purpose programming language, many people feel that C# is better designed than Java. Why until now there is no open source framework for C# application development? Why no one take the initiative to develop a open source framework for C# which is comparable to Java? (Many people say Mono is not a mature framework and should not be used in serious application development.) Calvin

  • How can I tell if a set of parens in perl code will act as grouping parens or form a list?

    - by Ryan Thompson
In perl, parentheses are used for overriding precedence (as in most programming languages) as well as for creating lists. How can I tell if a particular pair of parens will be treated as a grouping construct or a one-element list? For example, I'm pretty sure this is a scalar and not a one-element list: (1 + 1) But what about more complex expressions? Is there an easy way to tell?

  • Recommended OpenGL / GLUT Reference

    - by TJB
What OpenGL / GLUT reference is the best around? Ideally I'm looking for something with C++ sample code to help me learn OpenGL as well as details about the APIs similar to what MSDN provides for .net programming. If there isn't a one stop shop, then please list the set of references I should use and what the strengths of each one is. Thanx!

  • Is LuaJIT really faster than every other JIT-ed dynamic languages?

    - by Gabriel Cuvillier
According to the computer language benchmark game, the LuaJIT implementation seems to beat every other JIT-ed dynamic language (V8, Tracemonkey, PLT Scheme, Erlang HIPE) by an order of magnitude. I know that these benchmarks are not representative (as they say: "Which programming language implementations have the fastest benchmark programs?"), but this is still really impressive. In practice, is it really the case? Someone have tested that Lua implementation?

  • Why are there so many Database Management Systems?

    - by mr.bio
Why are there so many Database management systems? I am not an DB expert and I've never thought about using another Database other than mySQL. Programming languages offer different paradigms, so it makes sense to choose a specific language for your purpose. Question What are the factors in choosing a specific Database management system ?
