  • How to upgrade libxml on CentOS

    - by Radek Simko
I have a following version of CentOS: $ cat /etc/issue CentOS release 5.5 (Final) Kernel \r on an \m and following version of libxml: $ php -i | grep libxml libxml Version => 2.6.26 libxml libxml2 Version => 2.6.26 libxslt compiled against libxml Version => 2.6.26 and need to have newer version of libxml (primarly for usage in PHP, but obviously, it doesn't matter). If I even install the newer version of libxml somehow: wget ftp://xmlsoft.org/libxml2/libxml2-2.7.2.tar.gz tar -xvf libxml2-2.7.2.tar.gz cd libxml2-2.7.2 ./configure make sudo make install then I am unable to get it to work in PHP - there is still old version: libxml Version => 2.6.26 libxml libxml2 Version => 2.6.26 libxslt compiled against libxml Version => 2.6.26 What else do I need to do to make the new version to work with PHP?

  • Books to help self-taught programmers.

    - by RHaguiuda
As a self-taught programmer I find myself sometimes thinking how to improve my learning skills. Are there any books out there that you recommend, that help a self-taught learning aproach? When I ask about books here, please I`m not reffering about programming books, but something more like metacognition and the process of learning.

  • Should BASIC continue to be recommended for non-programmers and beginners?

    - by Casey
I just came across a new BASIC implementation for Google Android application called Simple. You can read about it here: http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2009/07/programming-made-simple.html Clearly, a lot of time and effort has been recently put into enabling this functionality for Android. Should the software industry continue to encourage non-programmers into learning BASIC, or are modern languages like C#, Python, Ruby more appropriate at this time?

  • Why are there so many Database Management Systems?

    - by mr.bio
Why are there so many Database management systems? I am not an DB expert and I've never thought about using another Database other than mySQL. Programming languages offer different paradigms, so it makes sense to choose a specific language for your purpose. Question What are the factors in choosing a specific Database management system ?

  • HP Envy 14, Ubuntu 10.10 and trouble with the graphics cards

    - by Carsten Gehling
A few days ago I bought a HP Envy 14, containing 2 graphics card: An integrated Intel graphics card, and an ATI HD 5650. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on the machine. Most things work fine out of the box, but the graphics cards are giving me trouble. When booting, I get the message "failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled". Then the screen blanks out during the remaining boot period. I am able to get the display working by changing to one of the consoles, then closing and opening the laptop's lid. It seems that Ubuntu gets confused about which card to use. I've read here: http://www.andreas-demmer.de/en/2010/07/18/testbericht-linux-auf-dem-hp-envy-14 that I should be able to turn off one the cards by echoing keywords into /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch, but that path is not available on my system. The BIOS does not have any methods to switch of the ATI card. Help anyone? /Carsten

  • How Do I make an Acer T230H Touchcreen work on Ubuntu 9.10?

    - by N Rahl
I've done this so far: sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/99-touchscreen.rules And added: SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0408", ATTRS{idProduct}=="3000", SYMLINK+="usb/quanta_touch" SUBSYSTEM=="input", KERNEL=="event*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0408", ATTRS{idProduct}=="3000", SYMLINK+="input/quanta_touch" sudo service udev restart then the instructions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8932808&postcount=36 And then added to my xorg conf: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Acer T230H" Driver "hidtouch" Option "SendCoreEvents" "true" Option "ReportingMode" "Raw" Option "Device" "/dev/usb/quanta_touch" Option "PacketCount" "13" Option "OpcodePressure" "852034" Option "OpcodeX" "65584" Option "OpcodeY" "65585" Option "CalibrationModel" "1" Option "CornerTopLeftX" "0" Option "CornerTopLeftY" "0" Option "CornerTopRightX" "1920" # 1920 for 23" Option "CornerTopRightY" "0" Option "CornerBottomLeftX" "0" Option "CornerBottomLeftY" "1080" # 1080 for 23" Option "CornerBottomRightX" "1920" # 1920 for 23" Option "CornerBottomRightY" "1080" # 1080 for 23" Option "CornerScreenWidth" "1920" # 1920 for 23" Option "CornerScreenHeight" "1080" # 1080 for 23" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Touchscreen" InputDevice "Acer T230H" "SendCoreEvents" EndSection And restarted. And the touchscreen does nothing. Any ideas?

  • How effective are technical test(s) and is it necessary?

    - by The Elite Gentleman
Hi everyone, I recently took a Java technical test (for a company who wanted are looking for senior java developers) and, funny enough, I only realised the technical terms of what I've been doing all along after I've written the test. I'm not too IT jargon when it comes to development but I can pretty much code and create solutions unaware that I'm using design pattern (or the specifics of that design pattern) or technology. I learned things such as JMS, Frameworks, etc. while programming at home and having to google stuff online to problems I have. Others e.g. IoC, Surrogates in Databases, etc., I have used extensively without knowing that it had a name for it. Do you think that these technical test are effective and why? What interesting questions did you find that boggled your brains out while the clock kept ticking? Seeing that IT is vastly evolving at a rapid rate, do we have to constantly be updated with new terms that comes out? Some questions I was asked : What object oriented principle is violated by this architectural mechanism for dot notation? Is indexing tables effective for range query or point query search? What is ThreadLocal and what is it used for? Method overloading vs Method overriding. What is the difference between the 2? What is dynamic binding? Now, imagine my poor head trying to understand these jargons (considering I use it almost everyday) PS The question was not a programming question, where you have a problem and write code to solve it. Rather, a thinking type question and you write answers (against the clock). Update I clearly didn't come out clearly as I should have. There are those that are technically "book smart" but with very little hands-on experience and vice versa. So, the question (in connection to what I've asked) is that are these technical test seeking "book smart" people or people with lots of hands-on experience (some who are not that well clued up with too much book-smart jargons). How effective is it then, for companies to look for developers if most of the questions are too terminology-centric? (if that's the correct term, :))

  • Can SATA be used to connect computers?

    - by André
Can SATA be used to connect two computers together, just like a crossover Ethernet cable would do ? I know SATA has no "networking" features and even though a controller may have multiple ports, the drives don't "see" each other, and that in SATA one device acts as the host (the computer) and the other device is some kind of "client" (the storage drive). But still, did anyone attempt to make a kernel module that would make one computer appear as a "client" (so that the host's SATA controller detects it as a standard hard drive) and then set up like a pseudo-Ethernet link or a very high speed serial link (and then run pppd on it and do networking) ? Note : I know this is an unprofessional and totally stupid idea, I'm just asking out of curiosity.

  • Fedora12 Slow USB 2.0 Write Speed, ehci_hcd module is missing

    - by MA1
I am using Fedora 12, the problem I am facing is USB 2.0 write speed. I have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Fedora 12. USB 2.0 write speed in Windows XP is much faster then what I am getting in Fedora 12. After searching Google I came to know that ehci_hcd module is missing/not present in my system. ehci_hcd module is neither loaded nor it is present in the available list of modules. Can someone guide me how to fix this issue? Does ehci_hcd have something to do with USB 2.0 write speed? Do I have to recompile the kernel and add/enable the ehci_hcd module?

  • Crazy VM clock drift

    - by SimonJGreen
This is taken from an Ubuntu 10.10 VM running on ESX5: Nov 3 21:58:50 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 31.187370s Nov 3 22:02:36 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 31.159808s Nov 3 22:05:18 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 31.067579s Nov 3 22:07:59 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 30.952187s Nov 3 22:11:38 server1 ntpd[21169]: adjusting local clock by 30.890147s According to the VMWare KB no kernel tweaks should be needed for Ubuntu 10.10 to maintain time to their standards. What's especially odd is the drift seems fairly consistent. Any help appreciated on this one!

  • How do I reinstall/enable snapper?

  • Best approach for coding ?

    - by ahmed
What should or how should I decide the best approach for coding as a smart programmer. I have just started programming last year in VB, and I keep on listening this statement. But I never could find by myself to choose the best approach for coding. When I search for a coding example on internet I find different types of approach to achieve the same target. So help me finding the best approach. (asp.net,vb.net)

  • Scalable Ticketing / Festival Website

    - by Luke Lowrey
I've noticed major music festivals (at least in Australia) and other events that experience a peak in traffic when tickets go on sale have huge problems keeping their websites running well. I've seen a few different techniques used to try combat this such as short sessions and virtual queues but they dont seem to have much effect. If you were to design a website to sell a lot of tickets in a short amount of time how would you handle scalability? What technologies and programming techniques would you use?

  • Good Administration Center Templates

    - by Alec Smart
Hello, This may not be a programming question per se. But I am wondering what template do you use for your sites/webapps admin centers. Am looking primarily at free templates that give a basic structure. I know I can build my own, but I haven't had too much success in something that works for all my webapps/sites. Wondering if there is something nice and comprehensive available. Thank you for your time.

  • scala for yield setting a value

    - by coubeatczech
Hi, I want to create a list of GridBagPanel.Constraints. I read it in the scala programming book, that there is a cool for-yield construction, but I probably haven't understood the way it works correctly, because my code doesn't compile. Here it is: val d = for { i <- 0 until 4 j <- 0 until 4 } yield { c = new Constraints c.gridx = j c.gridy = i } I want to generate a List[Constraints] and for every constraint set different x,y values so later, when I later add the components, they're going to be in a grid.
