• Public ASPXAUTH cookie and security

  Due to a bug in Flash, I have to use the ASPXAuth cookie to log a user in on a page that a flash upload script calls after upload. See this page for more information: http://geekswithblogs.net/apopovsky/archive/2009/05/06/working-around-flash-cookie-bug-in-asp.net-mvc.aspx I have to make the ASPXAUTH string "public" in the sense that it will be in the HTML of the page. My question is, how secure is this? I understand that anyone that can get to the string in the HTML can probably get to it from the cookie just as easily, but let's say someone does have this ASPXAUTH string. Is it possible that they can login as another user using this cookie? Would they be able to decrypt it? Bara

• Performance logging tips

  I am developing large data collecting ASP.Net/Windows service application-pair that uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 through LINQ2Sql. Performance is always the issue. Currently the application is divided into multiple larger processing parts, each logging the duration of their work. This is not detailed and does not help us with anything. It would be nice to have some database tables that contain statistics that the application itself collected from its own behavior. What logging tips and data structures do you recommend to spot the parts that cause performance problems?

• Default login popup for web sites

  Hi. I am trying to build a web site with ASP.NET MVC, I'm new to this. My question is: how can I display the default login dialog? I am not referring to a custom dialog, like the jQuery Dialog, there is a default pop-up for credentials, which looks different depending on browser, same as with javascript alert(), but I don't know how to display it. To know what I mean, go to http://fit.c2.com/wiki.cgi?WelcomeVisitors, there is a Login button at the bottom of the page, when you click it a pop-up appears. That is what I want to display. Any ideas?

• SharePoint Custom Application Page does not recognize tagPrefix defined in custom web.config

  I have a custom application page integrated in Centeral Administration. My application pages are placed in a subfolder in Template\Admin folder. I placed my own web.config in my subfolder and added tagPrefixes in the control section. However when I open my application page ASP.NET throws the exception that the tag SharePoint:InputFormTextBox was not recognized. Moving the add tagprefix statements in root web.config solves the problem but thats not acceptable in my case and I can't define them in individual pages either. What am I doing wrong? Or it doesn't work this way? What can i do to achieve this?

• Separation of concerns and authentication

  I'm trying to be a Good Developer and separate my concerns out. I've got an ASP.NET MVC project with all my web code, and a DAL project with all the model code. Sometimes code in the DAL needs to check if the current user is authorized to perform some actions, by checking something like CurrentUser.IsAdmin. For the web site, the current is derived from the Windows username (from HttpContext.Current.User.Identity), but this is clearly a web concern and shouldn't be coupled to the DAL. What's the best pattern to loosely couple the authentication? Should the DAL be asking the MVC code for a username, or the MVC be telling the DAL? Are there advantages or disadvantages to one or the other? Thank you!

  I'm discussing some software design issues with a potential client and the idea of Web-to-Print technology has come up. We need users to be able to drag images from an image library to various regions defined by a template. Example: Images may go in box A, B, or C and text may go in boxes D or E. These templates would be setup Boxes A through E would be defined inside a template by administrators using some sort of editor. These templates would serve as a mapping from web-content to a PDF. Once users drag images and insert text in the appropriate regions of the template, the result will be converted into a PDF. Is this feasible these days with jquery & asp.net? That would be nice. If not, what would be the ideal solution?

• Difference in DLL when compiling on Build Server instead of Dev Machine.

  I have an application that loads user controls into .NET web application. When I compile and test the application locally on my dev machine it works on my machine. The project builds successfully using MSBuild on our build server. However when I deploy the dll generated by MSBuild on the build server I get the following error when the application loads the control: BC30456: 'CreateResourceBasedLiteralControl' is not a member of 'ASP.usercontrols_somecontrol_ascx'. I took a look and compared the dll generated on my machine and compared it(looked at the file size) with the one created by the build server and noticed a difference in the file size. This is confusing considering the code being built locally and on the build server is IDENTICAL. I manually compared each file by hand. So my question is: What is causing this error? What would be different between MSBuild's compilation of the code and what is going on in Visual Studio when compiling the code?

  I have an action defined like so: public ActionResult Foo(int[] bar) { ... } Url's like this will work as expected: .../Controller/Foo?bar=1&bar=3&bar=5 I have another action that does some work and then redirects to the Foo action above for some computed values of bar. Is there a simple way of specifying the route values with RedirectToAction or ActionLink so that the url's get generated like the above example? These don't seem to work: return RedirectToAction("Foo", new { bar = new[] { 1, 3, 5 } }); return RedirectToAction("Foo", new[] { 1, 3, 5 }); <%= Html.ActionLink("Foo", "Foo", new { bar = new[] { 1, 3, 5 } }) %> <%= Html.ActionLink("Foo", "Foo", new[] { 1, 3, 5 }) %> However, for a single item in the array, these do work: return RedirectToAction("Foo", new { bar = 1 }); <%= Html.ActionLink("Foo", "Foo", new { bar = 1 }) %> When setting bar to an array, it redirects to the following: .../Controller/Foo?a=System.Int32[] Finally, this is with ASP.NET MVC 2 RC. Is there a way to access this directly in the cache or do I have to destroy and rebuild the whole object just to change the value of objMemberDetails.CreditNum?   Hi I know stackoverflow uses open authentication. I want to try and use this as well. I am using asp.net mvc 2.0 with C#. I found this http://www.dotnetopenauth.net/ and I am wondering if this is what was used for stackoverflow. Also any tutorials would be nice as well. • Stop browser from filling textboxes with details

  Hi, I've run into a really annoying problem, and I'm hoping it's just a setting I've missed. I've got an ASP.NET application which allows users to enter their username/password in various places (e.g. login, change password, change username etc..). When I logged in, the browser asked if I would like to store the user details. Usually, I click 'no', but this time I decided to click 'yes'. Now, certain textboxes in my form are prefilled with the username or password. Is it possible to remove these, as they sometimes appear in textboxes which shouldn't be prefilled. I tried setting AutoCompleteType=none and Text='' but it still gets prefilled. The textboxes don't have much in common, except the same CssClass and, for password boxes, TextMode=password. The names are different, although sometimes they include the word name (e.g. fullName, userName). Is there a way to stop the browser from filling certain textboxes? Thanks

  I'm working with ASP.NET MVC 2. I have a bunch of partial views that I render based on different conditions within the same controller. I'd like to not put the physical partial view files in with the controller's other views. I know that when I want a ViewResult using the View() or PartialView() methods the default view engine will search through the folder in the Views directory associated with the controller (i.e. if my controller is called Register it will look in the Register folder under Views) and also in the Shared folder. Is there any way to change this behavior, or perhaps tell it specifically where to look for the view -- heck, even give it a specific file to render? Is that possible? Perhaps even a sub-folder under the Shared folder will work...

• Tree View Control problem with render Control function

  I am using TreeView Control in Asp.net. I have placed this control inside a panel. The tree control is completely binded (we don’t want populate on demand) with an Xmldatasource during a callback and then I call Panel.renderControl to return the response (HTML) to the client side callback handler. Problem: 1. The tree expand/collapse (on click of plus sign) is causing postback whereas when I normally bind a tree with xml during postback and without using renderControl of container control, the expand/collapse (on click of plus sign) is being handled at client side.

  I cannot figure out why HeaderText or validation controls always fallback to default culture - even though rest of the controls are in correct culture. I have a gridView with HeaderText specified in this way <asp:BoundField DataField="totalSales" HeaderText="<%$ Resources:Strings,TotalSales %>" /> In the same way I have validation controls and they can't be localized. Only this syntax does work <%= Resources.Strings.Payments %> I set different culture in Master page using this statement in Page_Init Me.Page.Culture = "pl-PL" Me.Page.UICulture = "pl-PL" Can anyone spot what's wrong?   I am creating an RSS reader application that requests the RSS from my server. I mean, the RSS is first downloaded to my server, then application downloads it from my server. I want to create RSS cache for this. And for example, each RSS would be refreshed every 1 minute. So, If 10 users request RSS of example.com in 1 minute, my server will download it only for the first time, and in other 9 requests, RSS will be loaded from cache. My question is, Should I use a Database (MSSQL) for this purpose? or I should use files? I have no limit in Database size nor in file size... EDIT: I'm using ASP.NET for the server.

• Javascript is called in IE and FF but not in Chrome, why?

  I have the following code below for a button on an aspx page. When it is clicked it should call a javascript that will print the text in that div. Everything works great in IE & Firefox but when it is tried in chrome it is as if the OnClientClick is not kicking off the javascript. I receive no errors and it works in IE and FF now.
