With just 24 billion devices, they will outnumber humans six to one! So as a developer, you don't want to ignore this opportunity. What if you could use your Java skills and deploy an app to a fraction of these devices (don't be greedy, how about just, say, 118,000 of them)? Fareed Suliman, Java ME Product Manager had lots of good news for Java Developers in his presentation Modernizing the Explosion of Advanced Microcontrollers with Embedded Java at ARM TechCon in Santa Clara, CA last week. "A radical architecture shift is underway in this space, from proprietary to standards-based," he explained.  He pointed out several advantages to using Embedded Java for devices: Java is a proven and open standard. Java provides connectivity, encryption, location, and web services APIs. You don't have to focus on and keep reinventing the plumbing below the JVM. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows you to repeat your app across many devices. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows allows parallel development so you can get your app done more quickly. You already know Java (or you can hire lots of Java talent). Java is a full ecosystem, with Java Embedded plugins for IDEs like Eclipse and NetBeans. Java ME allows for in-field software upgrades. Suliman mentioned two ways developers can start using Java Embedded today:  Java ME Embedded Suite 7.0 Oracle Java Embedded Suite is a new packaged solution from Oracle (including Java DB, GlassFish for Embedded Suite, Jersey Web Services Framework, and Oracle Java SE Embedded 7 platform), created to provide value added services for collecting, managing, and transmitting data to embedded devices such as gateways and concentrators. • How do I get an Canon Pixma MP150 to print?

  I succesfully installed my Canon Pixma MP150 printer (and scanner) in Ubuntu 12.04, made it the default printer, but i cannot print anything. Watching the printing queue, i see that the printer receives my documents but just for a few seconds after which the queue gets empty without anything getting actually printed. I tried to print from large pdf's to quite tiny txt files. I reinstalled the printer from cups web-based interface (127.0.0.1:631) but again, no luck. Any ideea on the matter?

• How can I copy data from a windows disk to another partition?

  I have a new Solid State Drive, and it's very fast (but tiny, 128GB). But it seems to be much faster in Linux. Now, am I correct in assuming that if I Gparted copy paste the {_Boot MSreserved__][_________NTFS__________] in to (1st Empty space, same partition) and it will be bootable, right? Will this work? I also heard I should turn off 'journaling' for the SSD filesystem. Is that needed for this as well?

  I'm making a side scrolling airplane game and when I begin going very fast I begin to experience some problems as a player: Elements are not distinguishable, like power-ups from bullets, etc I start to feel dizzy and uncomfortable There isn't enough time to see what's coming How can I sort this out? Do I use less details in all the grahpics? Tiny Wings has the same horizontal movement speed as in my game but it doesn't suffer from these problems.   I checked this question, I got the same message including the mounting thing and press S or M, I did what the guys suggested doing in the terminal (including this) but in 2 of the commands I was denied the entry and another was not found-something like that, so how can i solve this? do you know other commands I should use, or should I reinstall Ubuntu without my assigning the 2.x MB of the tiny partition (/dev/sda5), during installation, to swap as I did? (I deleted windows 7 to install and use Ubuntu only.)

  Is there possible to extract such packages made by somebody else. Ok, so if there is no general way of extracting such archives, which can be a huge exe file or tiny exe starter with huge packed *.bin file with main files of an app that is to be run in portable way - is there a way to set an option in compilation *.ini file or other way to make such package able to be extracted. I remember I read somewhere that somebody created a tiny program (in was mentioned in vmware forums as far as I can remember, it was a crude thing coded for private use and I never managed to download it) to sit with main portable application and if such application has an open/save file dialog, it is possible to navigate to that program which virtually sits in the program files alongside main app from within the main app, and such program would scan all files that it can see and somehow is able to distiguish a real file from virtual one, and save all virtual files in a structure that is similar to the initial compilation folder from which portable app was created. I know that it is a very round-about way of doing things, but maybe the only one feasible. Nevertheless any news on this front ? Do antiviruses can somehow unpack these things ? Maybe they must buy a code or license for it from VmWare ? Edit: I found http://communities.vmware.com/thread/257433?tstart=600 and still trying to make sense out of this. Wrong, this was about moving old version of thinapp to win7.

• An easily customizable linux distribution using minimal disk space?

  I'm looking for a linux distribution that can be easily used to create my own distribution that's the same system with some software installed. So basically I should be able to create an iso which, when installed, will have the linux distribution with my desired installed. More specifically, I plan on installing mysql and a bit of my own software which shouldn't be too big. However, this distribution needs to be extremely small in terms of disk space. The distribution, including mysql should not exceed 100mb. It should, of course still be able to connect to the internet and perform other standard functions. I don't need X/any sort of window manager, and would prefer not to have it since it would increase disk usage. Currently I have tried ttylinux and tiny core linux. I've found that ttylinux, while is extremely small, has almost nothing so that mysql can't even be installed. Tiny core linux, on the other hand is a bit too big. I've found openembedded and linux from scratch, but I would prefer for the install and build process to be much easier. What other distribution would you recommend for my purposes? Minimizing disk usage is the most important, followed by ease of installing and creating the custom distribution.

• How to convert Markdown files to Dokuwiki, on a PC

  I'm looking for a tool or script to convert Markdown files to Dokuwiki format, that will run on a PC. This is so that I can use MarkdownPad on a PC to create initial drafts of documents, and then convert them to Dokuwiki format, to upload to a Dokuwiki installation that I have no control over. (This means that the Markdown plugin is no use to me.) I could spend time writing a Python script to do the conversion myself, but I'd like to avoid spending time on this, if such a thing exists already. The Markdown tags I'd like to have supported/converted are: Heading levels 1 - 5 Bold, italic, underline, fixed width font Numbered and unnumbered lists Hyperlinks Horizontal rules Does such a tool exist, or is there a good starting point available? Things I've found and considered I initially thought that txt2tags would be helpful, but although it can write both markdown and Dokuwiki, it is very tied to its own specific input format I've also seen Markdown2Dokuwiki, and although I'd certainly be willing to use a sed script, even on a PC, this only supports a tiny, tiny part of Markdown's syntax. python-markdown2 also sounded promising, but it only writes out HTML. pandoc - but it doesn't support Dokuwiki output MultiMarkdown - does not appear to support Dokuwiki output

• Terminate child processes on ctrl-c

  In tiny core linux, I have the following script: #!/bin/sh # ~/.X.d/freerdp.sh rdp(){ while true do xfreerdp -f [IP Address] done } rdp & It's pretty simple; when X starts up and checks the .X.d directory (as is the case in tiny core) it finds and executes this script. The script starts up freerdp and keeps a connection open to the server by restarting it whenever it closes. As you can see from the rdp & line, the function is run in the background to allow X to continue its startup routine. The problem is that whenever I cancel X with a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace the rdp process doesn't die. I'm looking for a way to kill the process as soon as X finishes, either through: A) a script, executed on X closing, which kills the process or B) by modifying the script to check the return value of the xfreerdp command. NB - if the solution does check the return value, it must only end if the command fails to open the X display. For that reason, if you could point me to a reference for xfreerdp return values I'd be grateful.

• Slower/cached Linux file system required

  I know it sounds odd but I need a slower or cached filesystem. I have a lot of firewalls that are syslog'ing their data to a pair of Linux VMs which write these files to their 'local' (actually FC SAN attached) ext3-formatted disks and also forward the messages to our Splunk servers. The problem is that the syslog server is writing these syslog messages as hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tiny ~4k writes per second back to our FC SAN - which can handle this workload right now but our FW traffic's going to be growing by at least a factor of 5000% (really) in coming months and that'll be a pain for the SAN, I want to fix the root cause before it's a problem. So I need some help figuring out a way of getting these writes cached or held-off in some way from the 'physical' disks so that the VMs fire off larger, but less frequent, writes - there's no way of avoiding these writes but there's no need for it to do so many tiny ones. I've looked at the various ext3 options, setting noatime and nodiratime but that's not made much of a dent in the problem. Obviously I'm investigating other file systems but thought I'd throw this out in case others have the same problem in the future. Oh and I can't just forward these messages to Splunk, our firewall team insist they're in their original format for diag purposes.

After changing vip_iface strings to point to right devices, e.g., br0 instead of eth0, and defining "/mnt/loopback|30G", in Cinder's block-device string, am able to navigate through openstack dashboard, error free. Following http://docs.openstack.org/grizzly/openstack-compute/install/apt/content/running-an-instance.html instructions, attempted to launch cirros 0.3.1 image; however, novalist shows the instance in   The ARM TechCon keynote "Why Ultra-Low Power Computing Will Change Everything" was anything but low-powered. The speaker, Dr. Johnathan Koomey, knows his subject: he is a Consulting Professor at Stanford University, worked for more than two decades at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and has been a visiting professor at Stanford University, Yale University, and UC Berkeley's Energy and Resources Group. His current focus is creating a standard (computations per kilowatt hour) and measuring computer energy consumption over time. The trends are impressive: energy consumption has halved every 1.5 years for the last 60 years. Battery life has made roughly a 10x improvement each decade since 1960. It's these improvements that have made laptops and cell phones possible. What does the future hold? Dr. Koomey said that in the past, the race by chip manufacturers was to create the fastest computer, but the priorities have now changed. New computers are tiny, smart, connected and cheap. "You can't underestimate the importance of a shift in industry focus from raw performance to power efficiency for mobile devices," he said. There is also a confluence of trends in computing, communications, sensors, and controls. The challenge is how to reduce the power requirements for these tiny devices. Alternate sources of power that are being explored are light, heat, motion, and even blood sugar. The University of Michigan has produced a miniature sensor that harnesses solar energy and could last for years without needing to be replaced. Also, the University of Washington has created a sensor that scavenges power from existing radio and TV signals.Specific devices designed for a purpose are much more efficient than general purpose computers. With all these sensors, instead of big data, developers should focus on nano-data, personalized information that will adjust the lights in a room, a machine, a variable sign, etc.Dr. Koomey showed some examples:The Proteus Digital Health Feedback System, an ingestible sensor that transmits when a patient has taken their medicine and is powered by their stomach juices. (Gives "powered by you" a whole new meaning!) Streetline Parking Systems, that provide real-time data about available parking spaces. The information can be sent to your phone or update parking signs around the city to point to areas with available spaces. Less driving around looking for parking spaces!The BigBelly trash system that uses solar power, compacts trash, and sends a text message when it is full. This dramatically reduces the number of times a truck has to come to pick up trash, freeing up resources and slashing fuel costs. This is a classic example of the efficiency of moving "bits not atoms." But researchers are approaching the physical limits of sensors, Dr. Kommey explained. With the current rate of technology improvement, they'll reach the three-atom transistor by 2041. Once they hit that wall, it will force a revolution they way we do computing. But wait, researchers at Purdue University and the University of New South Wales are both working on a reliable one-atom transistors! Other researchers are working on "approximate computing" that will reduce computing requirements drastically. So it's unclear where the wall actually is. In the meantime, as Dr. Koomey promised, ultra-low power computing will change everything.

• Debugging an unresponsive iPhone UI

  I have an application that needs to update its display every minute or so. To achieve this I was using performSelector:withObject:afterDelay, calling the selector that most of the time just changes some text in a label based on a very simple (and quick) calculation. [self performSelector:@selector(updateDisplay) withObject:nil afterDelay:60]; Occasionally during an update, I have to go off and get some data from the web, and so I do that in another thread using detachNewThreadSelector. That all worked and the "performSelector after Delay" call completes in a tiny fraction of a second, and only runs once a minute. Despite this, and despite running fine on the simulator, the single button in the app is largely unresponsive, not responding to multiple stabs. So, I had assumed peformSelector:afterDelay would not block, but I'm now wondering if it is blocking in some way? I even tried NOT doing the web-look-up incase this was somehow still impacting the responsiveness. No joy. [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(updateFromURL) toTarget:self withObject:nil]; I then pushed it through shark to see if I could see anything obvious. From here I can see the web-lookup is the only thing taking any time, but it is only being done every couple of minutes, and then clearly not running on the main thread. The app itself is consuming a tiny fraction of 1% of the CPU (0.0000034%) over 20 minutes, so it just must be a blocking issue. So, am I missing something about performSelector:afterDelay? What other common newbie mistakes might I be making. If it helps, although I've been developing applications for over 20 years, the previous 10 have been largely Java. Perhaps I have a Java assumption loaded :-) Essentially I have assumed the main thread is like the EDT (only do UI stuff on it, but keep everything else off it).

• How to change the margin of code's frame of showexpl.sty when numbers=none?

  Hi all, I want to align the code's frame with the formated text's frame. If the numbers=left,the mission is accomplished by configuring xleftmargin, xrightmargin, framesep, and numbersep. However, when I set numbers=none, I cannot accomplish my mission by configuring those properties. Regardless of the values set to those properties, the code's frame remains unchanged and expands beyond the \textwidth. Please see my code snippet below. • Tinyurl API Example - Am i doing it right :D

  Hi ... we use super-long Hashes for the Registration of new Users in our Application. The Problem is that these Hashes break in some Email Clients - making the Links unusable. I tried implementing the Tinyurl - API, with a simple Call, but i think it times out sometimes ... sometimes the mail does not reach the user. I updated the Code, but now the URL is never converted. Is Tinyurl really so slow or am i doing something wrong? (I mean hey, 5 Seconds is much in this Times) Can anybody recommend me a more reliable service? All my Fault, forgot a false in the fopen. • svn dev cycle. howto lots minor "features" pending for approval.

  Hi I've read similar questions regarding that but still feel the need to ask a question. I have scenario where we have lots of tiny "features" pending for approval. I generally see two approaches. 1.Keep trunk solid and have tons of branches for each tiny "feature". Basically every new thingy is a branch. Cons: - Might become nightmare to support so many branches no matter how small a change. Keeping all branches in sync etc etc. - Worst con I see in this is setup of test system so one can easily examine changes to approve (basically need to support all branches which seems insane). Pros: - Seemningly easy once approved a branch to be merged back to trunk and new release to be tagged and deployed. 2.For big features a branch is released and for small changes all goes in trunk(relatively stable) directly. Pros: - Easier to set test system as most of the time all will be directly visible. For big features should be easy to maintain separate branch on test. Cons: - Don't really see how release will go. I will not be able to basically release one part of trunk This would involve cherrypicking which is crazy to follow. Other approach is I just enforce that after some time (a week or so) all small features need to be approved so they can deployed before giving new tasks. I just create release branch and either all or none of small features are going live. This will be some fun discussion with head people. I guess having lots of small pending stuff is very problematic to follow technically.
