• ATI Radeon HD with Catalyst driver stuck mirroring screens

  In 11.10 I replaced my aging Nvidia card with a new Radeon HD 6970 card. The single card has two DVI output ports which I've connected to two monitors. I installed Catalyst version 11.9 and I cannot get multiple monitors set up the way I want. I tried: $ sudo amdcccle and setting the mode to single desktop multiple monitors and whenever I do that Unity crashes and I get back to the login screen. Nothing shows up in the Xorg.*.log files for me to post here. There's only one card so I don't think xinerama would be any help here. Anyone have any ideas? • XAMPP Closes the Connection and won't let me download anything

  I want my XAMPP Apache server to host a zip file (The file is around 250mb) but the server closes the connection and won't let me download the file! However webistes are loading correctly and It seems that the problem is with the extension Does xampp/apache have any file extension limit that they won't let me download .zip and .exe files? Also tested with a smaller .exe file , the problem is still present. It just doesn't let me download any file from the server.!!! • Easiest way to get Perfmon counter names into a text file?

  I'd like to create a settings file for my logman command. I expect to have lots of perfmon counters. Is there any easy way to get all the perfmon counters' exact text anywhere? The only thing I thought of was to create a Perfmon Counter Log through the GUI and then export the list of selected counters--but I don't see an export option! I guess I could manually copy what I see on the screen, but that seems inefficient. I'm going to be dealing with tens of counters. Maybe there is a list somewhere? That'd be easier to copy and paste from.

• Problems syncing photos and strange effects of uploaded files from other devices

  I have a Galaxy Spica (GT-i5700) Android v2.1, rooted with Leshak dev 7 #123. But never mind the root info, the problem would be the same unrooted. The photos from this phone is stored in "sdcard/images", nevertheless the phone also creates a "sdcard/DCIM" but only stores some thumbnails there. Problem nr 1: U1 only reads the DCIM-folder for automatic photo-upload. So photos stored in this phone is not uploaded. If I move photos to "DCIM" folder, U1 recognises the photos and start uploading them. Possible solution: Could there be an option in the settings, to set preferred photo folder? Problem nr 2: Out of 74 pictures, 12 did not get uploaded. Pressing "Retry failed transfers" in Settings does nothing. Pressing the files where status is "Upload failed, tap to retry" only changes the status to "Uploading..." but nothing gets uploaded. If I upload another file to U1, it is uploaded directly without any problem. It has nothing to do with file size, 1,1 MB files has been uploaded fine whilst some failed are 0,8 MB. Problem nr 3: The photos from DCIM are in my case uploaded to a folder called "Pictures - GT-I5700" in U1. If I log in to the homepage and from there upload another photo in "Pictures - GT-I5700", it shows up in U1 on my phone fine. But when I tap it, U1 downloads the photo to "sdcard/U1/Pictures - GT-I5700". If it sync photos from "sdcard/DCIM" to a specific folder, why not also download files to the same folder from which it is synced? After a while of usage, syncing and uploading files from different clients it would be a mishmash of folders and places files are stored and considering that I see no use of U1 at all. Another question: If my SD card in some way breaks down/some folders cannot be read/card temporarly changed and U1 is running, does U1 consider that as files deleted and also delete from the cloud?

  I am attempting to setup automatic logon for a windows 7 kiosk computer via the registry. I have set the values under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon like this: AutoAdminLogon = 1 ForceAutoLogon = 1 DisableCAD = 1 I have filled out the username and password fields. I have also deleted all EULA related values (a prerequisite of ForceAutoLogon) I have done this procedure on 2 computers. On computer A: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we logon automatically immediately after logging out. On computer B: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we are presented with a logon menu where the user needs to click a user name & then enter a password. It seems like the value of ForceAutoLogon requires some other prerequisite that is met on computer A, but not on computer B. What do I need to make computer B act like computer A when clicking the log off button from the windows start menu?

• HAPROXY per domain redirection

  I'm trying to redirect requests to my load balancer by domain name with acl and hdr_dom, to a separate backend. The redirection works ok with the first request - 'GET /' (the destination server is a WordPress site) but when the client asks for the assets ('GET /blablabla/style.css' for example) the haproxy doesn't redirect it to the right backend anymore, but to the default one, with . In the haproxy log I can see the correct host that the request is for (the one that I defined in hdr_dom) but it's like that since the GET request itself is relative (I mean not containing the domain but only from the /blablabla and forth), haproxy doesn't recognize it with the hdr_dom. I'm just guessing here.. Please help...

  For my education I have to make a basic game in HTML5 canvas. The game is a shooter game. When you can move left - right and space is shoot. When I shoot the bullets will move up. The enemy moves down. When the bullet hits the enemy the enemy has to dissapear and it will gain +1 score. But the enemy will dissapear after it comes up the screen. • mRemote and RoyalTS both are not able to RDP connect me to a Windows Server 2008 system?

  I am completely stuck on this one. If I start a RDP session independently of these 2 programs everything works fine. My RDP session connects, I click "OK" to accept the "Notice To Users" security message and then it shows me the login screen where I enter my password manually. Now, if I try to use either mRemote or RoyalTS to create this connection, I get the same behavior except that I get a "The user name or password is incorrect." message. Now, I know this cannot be true since I can manually connect with RDP. So, what is the problem with these 2 pieces of software that prevents me from logging in? I have no problems with connecting to Windows XP systems with these programs. Additionally, I wish I knew how to get one of these programs to automatically click the "OK" button on the "Notice To Users" message while automatically attempting to log me in as part of the login process. Can they do that?

• How to help FGLRX detect a device

  I have HD 4850 card, Ubuntu 12.10 and installed legacy drivers using makson96 ppa. The issue is, that FGLRX can not detect my device and loads vesa bios. I had the same problem on ubuntu 11.10, 12.04 versions. I want to manually help fglrx find a matching device to load as it shoudld do. • Corrupt Windows 7, Chkdsk finds errors continuously after multiple tries

  My Windows 7 instance is all corrupt on my Dell XPS laptop (my kid hibernated it as it was starting). I got the Windows 7 installation disc and I try to repair the installation. The repair goes through and it says done but it doesn't know if it repaired successfully. It just says reboot. I can also open a command line and I run chkdsk /F manually in there. What's strange is that I've run it 20 times and chkdsk claims that it fixes stuff every time. Eventually it stops and I reboot. Much to my chagrin, my machine is still broken. Chkdsk gives an error at the end that it can't write a log file. I've also run a full diagnostic using the Dell diagnostic tools. The tools say that everything is okay. Any suggestions regarding what I should do next? Any help appreciated. mj

• Notification if SyncToy fails

  I support a number of laptop users. In the past (before there were many laptops), each user's computer was set up so that their My Documents folder was mapped to a shared folder on the server. This worked very well for desktops, but has several obvious downsides for laptops (no files when you're off-site, etc). I'm exploring several alternatives for laptops to better map the shared drives, and SyncToy seems the best so far. I have a couple trial users set up so that it syncs automatically whenever they log in, along with a desktop icon they can click if they know they'll need something saved before the next login. My problem is that I'm concerned how I, as the maintainer of this system, can spot failures. I don't want my first indication of a problem to come after a user drops their laptop in a lake and it turns out nothing was synced for the last year. Any ideas?

• Unable to diagnose Windows 7 lockup

  Basic info: Laptop Dell Studio XPS 13 (Intel P9600, 4GB RAM, NVidia 9400M card, 256G Samsung PM800 SSD) Windows 7 Ultimate, as well as Fedora 14 Here's the deal - Windows would just lock up out of nowhere, no log entries, no dumps, no BSOD, it just freezes. This happens mostly when idle (but it happened when I was using it too) and does not follow a concrete time frame. No input is accepted - only solution is to hold the power button. Although this sounds like a clean cut hardware issue, the reason I'm willing to rule this out is that my primary OS is Fedora 14. It's been working fine for the past 2 years and I've been stress testing the hardware (intentionally or not) every once in a while with no issues. I would like to ask if there's any way to get a diagnostic output from Windows in a situation such as this. The next step in my testing is to leave it in Safe Mode overnight and see if it locks up but even if I do that, I still need to figure out what component freezes it up during normal operation.

  I wanted to ask this question on meta, but it said, I have to log in first (which is where I have the problem!) I answered a question with this user. But when I tried to register and click on the stack exchange icon, it only displays three dots (animated) and never comes back. I suspected a firefox problem so I tried firefox on windows: And yes, I was able to create an account linked with my other accounts ( http://unix.stackexchange.com/users/27867/holgero and http://stackoverflow.com/users/1779245/holgero ) when I ran the latest firefox version under windows 7 in a virtual box. Then I upgraded my linux firefox to the newest version and deleted the other account under windows again. But still I cannot register this account ( http://superuser.com/users/177338/holgero ). On unix.stackexchange or stackoverflow I never had any problems with the registration, superuser seems to be different. So, how do I register this user and have it linked with my other stackexchange accounts?

  I am trying to set up a computer with multiple users each with different preferred keyboard layouts. The biggest sticking point right now is allowing each to log in comfortably. GDM used to offer a way to choose keyboard layout, but I can't discover how to set this up in GDM3. All the solutions I found when Googling this problem suggest changing the keyboard layout in xorg.conf, but that only sets a different single layout and still does not seem to allow me to change the layout between multiple choices. How can I allow multiple layouts when logging in?

More info: I like to have my C++ IDE in workspace 2, my Java IDE in workspace 3, and my email, browser and miscellaneous in workspace four. I also use a shell script that executes upon log in: #!/bin/bash gnome-terminal & # WS 1 netbeans-6-9-1 & # WS2 qtcreator-2-0-1 & # WS 3 firefox & # WS 4 thunderbird & # WS 4 Of course currently it all opens in the curent workspace...   Just few hours ago FileZilla was working fine. Then, suddenly I started to get this error: Status: Resolving address of ftp.readtypechinese.com Status: Connecting to 69.175.14.60:21... Error: Connection timed out Error: Could not connect to server And it happens with all my sites: Status: Resolving address of edasich.dreamhost.com Status: Connecting to 173.236.223.223:21... Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message... Error: Connection timed out Error: Could not connect to server I'm using FileZilla 3.5.0 and Ubuntu 11.10. Any suggestions to fix this?   I'm in the midst of refactoring a project. I've recently read Clean Code, and want to heed some of the advice within, with particular interest in Single Responsibility Principle (SRP). Currently, there's a class called OrderProcessor in the context of a manufacturing product order system. This class is currently performs the following routine every n minutes: check database for newly submitted + unprocessed orders (via a Data Layer class already, phew!) gather all the details of the orders mark them as in-process iterate through each to: perform some integrity checking call a web service on a 3rd party system to place the order check status return value of the web service for success/fail email somebody if web service returns fail constantly log to a text file on each operation or possible fail point I've started by breaking out this class into new classes like: OrderService - poor name. This is the one that wakes up every n minutes OrderGatherer - calls the DL to get the order from the database OrderIterator (? seems too forced or poorly named) - OrderPlacer - calls web service to place the order EmailSender Logger I'm struggling to find good names for each class, and implementing SRP in a reasonable way. How could this class be separated into new class with discrete responsibilities?

• Ubuntu One has high CPU usage but no syncing

  over the weekend I updated my computer to Windows 8. So far Ubuntu One was running smoothly, but ever since the update (clean, new install) Ubuntu doesn't sync any more. In Windows 7 it would start to sync at full internet speed as soon as I drop a file. But now in Windows 8, as soon as I drop a new file into the Ubuntu One folder, CPU usage goes up to about 50 % and no network traffic occurs. This stays like that for a couple of minutes, CPU usage goes back to normal and then the client says that all is in sync - which isn't true. Is it too early for Windows 8? Do others have the same problem or is there something I can do about it? I try a couple of different things, and realized that if the file size is 20 MB the files get uploaded. The original file was 1.5 GB. I also didn't work with 200, 100 and 50 MB large files. But even with 20 MB large files, the upload is very slow and not steady. The log give plenty of this error: - twisted - ERROR - Failure: exceptions.TypeError About which I don't know the meaning. By the way, the account works just fine on the Ubuntu 12.04 partition. Any help is greatly appreciated. -Peter

  I have a script log file that looks a bit like this: 2012-9-16 Did something Did 345 things Script time: 244 seconds 2012-9-17 Did yet something Did another thing 23 times Script time: 352 seconds 2012-9-18 Did something special for 34 seconds 51 times Did nothing at all Script time: 122 seconds I would like to find the largest value of N in the lines Script time: N seconds. However, I need to keep the context, so simply removing all lines that don't contain Script time in them is not a viable solution. Currently, I am grepping for lines with Script time, then sorting those to find the highest value, then going back to the original file and searching for that value. However, if there is a more straightforward way then I would love to know. This is on Vim 7.3 on a recent CentOS. I would prefer to remain in VIM if possible. Thanks.

• Shared storage solution for our sql server backups

  We have 3 clustered sql servers. We have 5+ multi terrabyte databases and their backup files (compressed using quest litespeed) are hitting over 600gb each, We are required to keep at least a week or two weeks (if we can) of weekly full backups and then 6 days differential backups, and a week or 2 weeks worth of log backups local. We are currently limited to 2TB volumes from our san team, we can have multiple volumes but they are expensive ($200 per raw TB per month) and having to deal with many backup volumes instead of a single big volume is difficult. I think if we could have a shared network storage of 20TB+ raid 10 or so for all our servers for keeping the backups and another department will copy them to tape from the network storage and delete files according to the retention period would be good, if this box would be a build in operating system (even unix a complete file storage system) that would be good. What do you guys think, does this make sense to you, is there any manufacturer that sells a storage product like that which that work in a clustered environment? Thank you

• Password protect an alias virtual difrecory

  I have a main domain being hosted through CPanel. I also have a sub-domain that I would like to appear as a path under the main domain instead of as a sub-domain. So I have: http://example.com/ pointing to the main hosted file. http://example.com/mydir pointing to the subdomain files. This is achieved by a httpd.conf include from the main domain section to set an alias: alias /mydir /path/to/subdomain/files/ Now, that works fine so far. The problem is that if a .htaccess file under /path/to/the/subdomain/files/ contains an error, the alias is completely skipped, and /mydir goes instead to the main host files. That is kind of surprising to me - I would expect an error to return an error instead. Now the killer: if I try to password protect /path/to/subdomain/files/, then trying to access http://example.com/mydir will again attempt to deliver from under the main hosted files and not from /path/to/subdomain/files/ I am not seeing any errors reported on the .htaccess file in the apache error log, so I am assuming the .htaccess is valid: AuthUserFile /path/to/valid/readable/.htpasswd AuthName "Secure Access" AuthType Basic Require valid-user This kind of behaviour does not seem right to me. Is there something obvious that could be causing it? Or is this just the way it works? Perhaps using an alias is the wrong way to go?

• Accessing the Local System Account to accept a software licence

  Hi All, I have a server at the moment running ColdFusion which is being used to access a windows whois program on the server. Each time I call this command via ColdFusion (using cfexecute) the command times out. I believe the issue is because the first time a user runs the .exe file they are asked to accept the licence. ColdFusion is currently set to run under the Local System account and I am just wondering if it is possible to somehow log into this account and run the program manually via the console so that I can accept the licence. I guess my only other option is to change the account ColdFusion runs under, but I would rather not do this.
