• Programming language for web

  I haven't programmed in a while, and have kind of lost interest, but I want to get back, and I've enjoyed C# the most, a lot more than objective-c and visual basic. So I want to make some games that me and my friends will be able to play next school year. So basically something you can play on the web. What programming languages deploy to the web? If c# is possible, and a mac with safari/firefox would be able to use it (I can't install plugins, and I don't want to get in trouble for making myself admin again) Flash, Java, etc. If java does, I'd like that most since it's most like c#. Then what libraries/engines would I use? I want to do 2d. And then what IDE would I use? Thanks in advance!

• CPU and Data alignment

  Dear All, Pardon me if you feel this has been answered numerous times, but I need answers to the following queries! Why data has to be aligned (on 4 byte/ 8 byte/ 2 byte boundaries)? Here my doubt is when the CPU has address lines Ax Ax-1 Ax-2 ... A2 A1 A0 then it is quite possible to address the memory locations sequentially. So why there is the need to align the data at specific boundaries? How to find the alignment requirements when I am compiling my code and generating the executatble? If for e.g the data alignment is 4 byte boundary, does that mean each consecutive byte is located at modulo 4 offsets? My doubt is if data is 4 byte aligned does that mean that if a byte is at 1004 then the next byte is at 1008 (or at 1005)? Your thoughts are much welcome. Thanks in advance! /MS

• Rails CSV import, adding to a related table

  Hi, I have a csv importing system on my app (used locally only) which parses the csv file line by line and adds the data to the database table. There is a relationship that courses HABTM years and years HABTM courses. In the csv file (effectively in row[5] to row[8]) are the year_id s. Is there a way that I can add this within the method above. I am confused as to how to loop over the 4 items and add them to the courses_years table. Thank you Jack

• Facebook Connect via Javascript doesn't close and doesn't pass session id

However after authentication, the popup window just stays open and the main window is not directed anywhere. In fact, it is the popup window that goes to "/register/step2" How can I get the login window to close as expected, and to pass the facebook session id to /register/step2? Thanks!

• iOS localization inconsistency

  I'm localizing an iPhone app for the first time. I've put all my strings into a Localizable.strings file, accessing them via NSLocalizedString from within my code. Works fine. Next, I have a file called info.html that contains the flesh of a UIWebView that I use as an About box. I've put it in the language folders (en.lproj and de.lproj), and added them to my Resources in Xcode. Now, in Simulator, both the Strings, and the html file display in the appropriate language. However, on the device, the Strings appear localized while the html file remains untranslated. This is a strange inconsistency between Simulator and Device! Anybody know of a workaround? (...other than defying the localization system, and using NSLocalizedString to call de_info.html, en_info.html etc. by hand.)

• Cache inferno - how can Model.A be two different things at the same time?

It's a paging mechanism so the hidden value was valid on the first page and I've been able to move forward to the next page. But since the values won't update properly it ends there. What do I need to do. Using firefox.

  I've seen simple examples of rendering a Zend_Form using decorators, but I'm not sure they are able to handle the issue I'm facing very well. I query the database and get an array of user objects. I want to display these users as a form, with a radio button next to each of them and a submit button at the bottom of the page. Here's roughly what the form will look like: [user id] [email] [full name] ( ) 1 [email protected] Test user 1 (*) 2 [email protected] Test user 2 [SUBMIT] Is this something achievable in a reasonably straightforward way or do I need to use the ViewScript partial?

  OK, so say I have a table with 500K rows, then I ad-hoc query with unsupported indexing which requires a full table scan. I would like to immediately view the first rows returned while the full table scan continues. Then I want to scroll thru the next results. In the meantime, I would like to display the progress of the table scan, example: "SEARCHING.. FOUND 23 OF 500,000 ROWS SO FAR". If I scroll too far ahead, I want to display a message like: "REACHED LAST ROW IN LOOK-AHEAD BUFFER.. QUERY HAS NOT COMPLETED".. Can this be done? Maybe like: spawn/exec, declare scroll cursor, open, fetch, etc.?

I would like to convert this to ADO so I do not have to reference the DAO object library. Here is the code ...   When I write a comment, it's often a paragraph or a few lines that explains clearly what a bit of code is doing and why it's doing that. What I'd like is if I could start a comment, and have the editor automatically insert a line break and continue the comment to the nest line when I reach, say, 80 characters long. So I'd type: // Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. < here the editor breaks automatically and continues onto the next line: // Etiam congue quam eget leo dignissim tincidunt.

  From what I understand, the following script should work in Windows XP and higher, but it doesn't work for me in Vista Business 32-bit Service Pack 2. • PHP photo gallery with multiple upload form

  Hi everyone, I am trying to develop a PHP driven gallery with a form that has at least four file upload boxes, each with its own title and caption. I have been using php.upload.class to process uploaded photos but not sure how I would go about handling each individual upload while preserving its details (title, caption). Is there a practical way to do this or should I instead upload just the photos and then have the user add titles and captions on the next page? Any help/suggestion would be greatly appreciated. • Virtual StringTree's hint windows are left out on the screen

  Hi, See this screenshot, in the middle it's the small hint windows that are generated by a TVirtualStringTree control and were left out on the screen, these hint windows will remain there until the application exits. the problem happens when the treeview's hint is shown and the mouse leaves quickly to the window next to it. Any idea about how to avoid this or how to clear those un-erased hint windows if it's difficult to avid this? Few days ago I asked a similar question, while the hint windows in the screenshots look the same, the are not the same problem. That problem, the hint text never shows and only that kind of uncompleted hint windows are shown; This problem, the hint text shows but the hint windows are not completely erased in a case (as I described above). • Drupal 6: Taxonomy splot up in managed fields?

  So you have two taxonomies, namely: "Business Type" and "Location" This is assigned to a node called BUSINESS. In effect, when the user creates a BUSINESS node, her has to choose for example, location "New York" and type "Information Services". My problem is when: a) Capturing the taxonomy, and b) Displaying the taxonomy I want the two terms to be separated from each other. I.e. I want to be able to move the two terms individual positions in the MANAGE FIELDS view, so that they can be grouped or placed seperately. Currently, Drupal only allows one entry, called "TAXONOMY" which is effectively the two terms next to each other. This is what I have: This is what I want: Bare in mind, I need to be able to use this with Hierarchical Select, which means Content Taxonomy is not an option.

  Hi, I'm using JavaMail to send email requests to an SMTP server. I would like to set both "mail.smtp.connectiontimeout" and "mail.smtp.timeout" properties within my code. Programmatically, I want to catch both when timeout and/or connectiontimeout operations are reached in Java and handle things accordingly. Handling in the sense, I need to retry the same email once again the next time. How do I handle this in Java/JavaMail? Is it possible to catch & handle this timeout operations?

• Is removing unused functionality a bad thing?

  Is it possible for YAGNI to apply in the past tense? You created some functionality, it was used a little bit a while ago, but you aren't using it any more, and you don't want to maintain it, so you'd rather delete it. Is getting rid of unused or rarely-used functionality neccessarily a bad thing? Background: I use source control, so if I need the functionality again, I can get it. I'm the only user of my software (I'm a bioinformatician analyzing a data set). One scenario where I came across this was that I was using inheritance, with a parent class, and two child classes. One was handling files generated by 454 sequencing (next-generation sequencing), and the other was handling files generated by Sanger sequencing (previous-generation sequencing). I was actively maintaining the latter, but not the former. Maybe my mistake was using inheritance rather than composition, but that's a slightly different story.

  I'm stuck trying to solve a problem that's proving to be more difficult than it seems. Consider there is a table that associates products with attributes, it looks like this: Products_id | Attribute_id 21 | 456 21 | 231 21 | 26 22 | 456 22 | 26 22 | 116 23 | 116 23 | 231 Next, I have a list of attribute_ids which I want to use in order to get the products that have all the attributes in that list. For example if I search in the table above using this list (456, 26) I should get these product_ids 21 and 22. Another example, if I search for (116, 231) I should get an empty response since there are no products that have both these attributes. How can I achieve this using one query? • CAsyncSocket and ThreadPool problem

  I have a server application with such structure: There is one object, call him Server, that in endless cycle listens and accepts connections. I have descendant class from CAsyncSocket, that has overriden event OnReceive, call him ProxySocket. Also I have a thread pool with early created threads. When connection is received by server object he accepts the new connection on the new object ProxySocket. When data arrives to the ProxySocket, he creates a command object and gives it to thread pool. In this command object I giving the socket handle of a ProxySocket. When new object of command is creating - I creating a new Socket in working thread and attach handle to it. My issue is next: When command ends, socket doesn't close, I just detach handle it and set CSocket handle to INVALID_SOCKET value, as planned. But my first ProxySocket object doesn't receives messages of new data receiving after that. How can I solve this?

• How to handle similar items in rails MVC?

  I'm working on building a pretty simple site mainly as an exercise in learning more about rails. You can see my rough progress at statific.com. It's working pretty much as I wanted it for keeping track of server information, but now I'd like to expand it to other things, next on the list being firewalls. I can pretty easily duplicate all the models, views, etc.. that I have for my servers. The problem I see with that is that it isn't very DRY since most of the code would look the same, the only difference would be the attributes I have setup for firewalls would be different than for servers. I know in plain ruby this is pretty simple, you can have a 'Product' w/ common attributes ('manufacturer', 'model') and then have children with more specific attributes. Does the same type of concept exist for rails, or am I just over thinking this?

• Git push origin master

  I am new to git and recently set up a new account with github. I'm following a rails tutorial from Michael Hartl online ( http://www.railstutorial.org/book#fig:github_first_page ) and followed his instructions to set up my git which were also inline with the setup instructions at github. Anyways, the "Next Steps" section on github were: mkdir sample_app cd sample_app git init touch README git add README git commit -m 'first commit' git remote add origin [email protected]:rosdabos55/sample_app.git git push origin master I got all the way to the last instruction (git push origin master) without any problem. When I entered that last line into my terminal, however, I got this error message: "fatal: No path specified. See 'man git-pull' for valid url syntax." What might I be doing wrong?
