• How do I stop and repair a RAID 5 array that has failed and has I/O pending?

  The short version: I have a failed RAID 5 array which has a bunch of processes hung waiting on I/O operations on it; how can I recover from this? The long version: Yesterday I noticed Samba access was being very sporadic; accessing the server's shares from Windows would randomly lock up explorer completely after clicking on one or two directories. I assumed it was Windows being a pain and left it. Today the problem is the same, so I did a little digging; the first thing I noticed was that running ps aux | grep smbd gives a lot of lines like this: ben 969 0.0 0.2 96088 4128 ? There are a lot of processes stuck in the "D" state. Running ps aux | grep " D" shows up some other processes including my nightly backup script, all of which need to access the volume mounted on my RAID array at some point. I cannot hot-swap a replacement drive in, and don't want to leave the array running in a degraded state. I believe I am supposed to unmount the filesystem before stopping the array, but that is failing, and that is where I'm stuck now: ben@jack:~$ sudo umount /storage umount: /storage: device is busy. (In some cases useful info about processes that use the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1)) It is indeed busy; there are some 30 or 40 processes waiting on I/O. What should I do? Should I kill all these processes and try again? Is that a wise move when they are 'uninterruptable'? What would happen if I tried to reboot? Please let me know what you think I should do. And please ask if you need any extra information to diagnose the problem or to help!

• Pecl complies .so extensions for OSX built-in PHP and not MAMP

  I've installed the sphinx binaries and libraries and am now trying to install the PECL sphinx module. My system is running OS X 10.6 with MAMP 1.8.2 installed. I try to install sphinx using the following command: sudo pecl install sphinx The PECL command outputs the following: running: phpize Configuring for: PHP Api Version: 20090626 Zend Module Api No: 20090626 Zend Extension Api No: 220090626 The versions above don't match the versions listed when doing a phpinfo(). It seems that PECL is trying to complie against the built-in version of PHP. If I ignore the errors and continue the it will successfully compile and place the sphinx.so file in: /usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/sphinx.so when in fact it should be: /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/ I've tried copying the sphinx.so file to the MAMP extensions dir but when I restart apache PHP displays the following warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/sphinx.so I think this is because MAMP is 32bit and the built-in PHP is 64bit so PECL complies for 64bit. I might be completely wrong but I did read this when I goggled on the topic. Does anyone know how to get PECL to map to the MAMP version of PHP instead of the built-in version?

  Setting up a new 64 bit RHEL 6 server with ext4 FS. Have only worked with ext3 and 32bit RHEL5 before. No matter what I try, I cannot get it to work.   I have a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa 1538 laptops and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (Kernel 2.6.32). Main problem is that the fans of the notebook are always on even when the temperature is low. Another problem is that the display brightness can not be adjusted. Since some years I use Dell laptops and never experienced any ACPI problems so I thought that it is no longer needed to fix ACPI tables but now I have this crap of a laptop and I think I have to do it. Unfortunately I need some help repairing the DSDT. • How do I host node.js apps with pm2 without running them as root?

  I have setup pm2 to run a node.js application, and I can successfully start it and it will resurrect upon reboot. However, the pm2 daemon is ran as root, which makes me think that all my node-scripts also runs as root? Even though I added them as a regular user in the system. • Unable to delete a file using bash script

  I'm having problems removing a file in a bash script. I saw the other post with the same problem but none of those solutions solved my problem. The bash script is an OP5 surveillance check and it calls an Expect process that saves a temporary file to the local drive which the bash script reads from. Once it has read the file and checked its status I would like to remove the temporary file. I'm pretty new to scripting so my script may not be as optimal as it can be. Either way it does the job except removing the file once it's done. And specify that in the rm command. I tried creating another if statement similar to the one I use to verify that file exist and then rm the filename. I tried adding the complete name of the file (no variables, just plain text of the file) I can: Remove the file using the full name in both a separate script and directly in the CLI. Is there something in my script that locks the file that prevents me from removing it? I'm not sure what to try next. Thanks in advance!

• "Stream" tar action from remote server through Putty?

  I am accessing a shared hosting account through Putty / SSH. The account is pretty full, 300 MB below its quota. I need to make a full backup of all data present on the account. Creating a bzip2 file using tar cjf archive.tar.bz2 directory/* fails because there is not enough space for the tar. Does anybody know a way to create a tar file and "stream" it to a local file on my PC? Through putty or any other SSH tool?

• Accidentally deleted symlink libc.so.6 in CentOS 6.4. How to get sudo privilege to re-create it?

  I accidentally deleted the symbol link /lib64/libc.so.6 - /lib64/libc-2.12.so with $ sudo rm libc.so.6 Then I can not use anything including ls command. The error appears for any command I type ls: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I've tried $ export LD_PRELOAD=/lib64/libc-2.12.so After this I can use ls and ln ..., but still can not use sudo ln ..., sudo -E ln ..., sudo su or even su. I always get this err sudo: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory or su: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory It seems LD_PRELOAD works only for the current shell session of my account, but not for a new account like root or a new session. It's a remote server so I can not use a live CD. I now have a ssh bash session alive but can not establish new ones. I have sudo privilege, but don't have root password. So currently my problem is I need to run sudo sln -s libc-2.12.so libc.so.6 to re-create the symlink libc.so.6, but I can not run sudo without libc.so.6. How can I fix it? Thanks~

Currently I'm stuck at prefixing the files by their parent folder. I found out how to prefix lines using sed and how to escape using sed, but I'm having troubles combining those two. • Move smaller hard drive to partition on a larger hard drive

  My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu. I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot. Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority. In case it helps, both drives use 2.5" PATA, and I have a 1 TB external drive available if it's needed.

  A new track at TDC (The Developer's Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil) is titled Open Data. It deals with open data, government and transparency. Saturday will be a "transparency hacker day" where developers are invited to create applications using open data from the Brazilian government.  Alexandre Gomes, co-lead of the track, says "I want to inspire developers to become "Civic hackers:" developers who create apps to make society better." It is a chance for developers to do well and do good. There are many opportunities for developers, including monitoring government expenditures and getting citizens involved via social networks. The open data movement is growing worldwide. One initiative, the Open Government Partnership, is working to make government data easier to find and access. Making this data easily available means that with the right applications, it will be easier for people to make decisions and suggestions about government policies based on detailed information. Last April, the Open Government Partnership held its annual meeting in Brasilia, the capitol of Brazil. It was a great success showcasing the innovative work being done in open data by governments, civil societies and individuals around the world. For example, Bulgaria now publishes daily data on budget spending for all public institutions. Alexandre Gomes Explains Open Data At TDC, the Open Data track will include a presentation of examples of successful open data projects, an introduction to the semantic web, how to handle big data sets, techniques of data visualization, and how to design APIs.The other track lead is Christian Moryah Miranda, a systems analyst for the Brazilian Government's Ministry of Planning. "The Brazilian government wholeheartedly supports this effort. In order to make our data available to the public, it forces us to be more consistent with our data across ministries, and that's a good step forward for us," he said. He explained the government knows they cannot achieve everything they would like without help from the public. "It is not the government versus the people, rather citizens are partners with the government, and together we can achieve great things!" Miranda exclaimed. Saturday at TDC will be a "transparency hacker day" where developers will be invited to create applications using open data from the Brazilian government. Attendees are invited to pitch their ideas, work in small groups, and present their project at the end of the conference. "For example," Gomes said, "the Brazilian government just released the salaries of all government employees and I can't wait to see what developers can do with that." • RAID-1 and regular drive removal (using RAID-1 as a backup measure)

  Is using mdadm's RAID-1 of 2 partitions (one on laptop's internal HDD, one on external HDD) a good idea. I want the system to work as RAID-1 if both drives are present, work as regular volume (degradad RAID-1) if external HDD is unplugged and quickly resync when I plug external HDD again. Questions: Is it a good idea? Will write-intent bitmap be enough for this task or I need something else? Should I consider doing it at filesystem level (3b. if yes, how?). Basic requirements are: Quick resync when I re-add the external drive (provided I hasn't changed that partition). More or less consistent data on the removed drive if I remove it not during write/resync operation. If I remove the drive during resync I expect the data to be somewhat inconsistent, but expect quick resync completion when I re-add it again. E.g. I want the the remaining drive to track what is changed (there can be a lot of changes) and that sync back only those parts that need it.

• Fedora to Fedora remote desktop does not work (connection closed error, even after setting everything up)

  I'm trying to use remote desktop on my laptop (running Fedora) to my desktop (also running Fedora) on the same local network. I configured Remote Desktop on my desktop via System - Preferences - Remote Desktop, verified that the port is open by nmap, and attempted to connect from my laptop via vinagre (also tried appending :5900 for the port, and using the ip address). In all cases, the connection fails with a popup that says "Connection closed\n Connection to host was closed." EDIT: I am able to use vinagre from the desktop to remote desktop into itself, just not from one machine to the other. I tried vncviewer and a similar problem occurs (unable connect to socket: No route to host (113))

• How to read oom-killer syslog messages?

  I have a Ubuntu 12.04 server which sometimes dies completely - no SSH, no ping, nothing until it is physically rebooted. After the reboot, I see in syslog that the oom-killer killed, well, pretty much everything. There's a lot of detailed memory usage information in them.
