• serializing JSON files with newlines in Python

  I am using json and jsonpickle sometimes to serialize objects to files, using the following function: def json_serialize(obj, filename, use_jsonpickle=True): f = open(filename, 'w') if use_jsonpickle: import jsonpickle json_obj = jsonpickle.encode(obj) f.write(json_obj) else: simplejson.dump(obj, f) f.close() The problem is that if I serialize a dictionary for example, using "json_serialize(mydict, myfilename)" then the entire serialization gets put on one line. This means that I can't grep the file for entries to be inspected by hand, like I would a CSV file. Is there a way to make it so each element of an object (e.g. each entry in a dict, or each element in a list) is placed on a separate line in the JSON output file? thanks.

• Is an object in objective-c EVER created without going through alloc?

  Hi, I know that there are functions in the objective-c runtime that allow you to create objects directly, such as class_createInstance. What I would like to know is if anything actually uses these functions other than the root classes' (NSObject) alloc method. I think things like KVC bindings might, but those aren't present on the iPhone OS (to my knowledge, correct me if I'm wrong), so is there anything that would do this? In case you're wondering/it matters, I'm looking to allocate the size of an instance in a way that circumvents the objc runtime by declaring no ivars on a class, but overriding the +alloc method and calling class_createInstance(self, numberofbytesofmyivars).   I'm using CML to manage the 3D math in an OpenGL-based interface project I'm making for work. I need to know the width of the viewing frustum at a given distance from the eye point, which is kept as a part of a 4x4 matrix that represents the camera. My goal is to position gui objects along the apparent edge of the viewport, but at some distance into the screen from the near clipping plane. CML has a function to extract the planes of the frustum, giving them back in Ax + By + Cz + D = 0 form. This frustum is perpendicular to the camera, which isn't necessarily aligned with the z axis of the perspective projection. I'd like to extract x and z coordinates so as to pin graphical elements to the sides of the screen at different distances from the camera. What is the best way to go about doing it? Thanks!

• Advanced Java book in the lines of CLR via c# or C# in Depth?

  I want to learn about how things work in depth in Java. Coming from a c# background, there were a couple of very good books that go really deep in c# (C# in depth, CLR via c#, just to name the most popular). Is there anything like that in Java? I searched it up on amazon but nothing seemed to go that deep in Java as the two above go in c#. I don't want to know more about specific classes, or how to use this library or that other library, I want to learn how the objects are created on memory, how they get created on the stack, heap, etc. A more fundamental knowledge, let's say. I've read some chapters of Effective Java and The Java Programming Language but they don't seem to go so deep as I'd want them to go. Maybe there are other people that know both c# and Java that have read any of the referred books and know any that might be useful? Thanks

• Three20 - add items to launcherView after viewDidLoad

  Hi I am getting a list of image URLs and corresponding names at run time in my app. I would like to add these images to a TTLauncherView object that I have. Cannot add these in loadView. I am making a call to the method for getting my data in a separate thread. Once the thread completes, I add the TTLauncherItem objects to an array and set the "pages" variable of the LauncherView. But for some reason, the view is not updated and I don't see anything on it. Can someone please let me know how to refresh the launcherview after adding items to it in methods other than loadView? Thanks.

The factory builds the new objects according to the parameters. in Abstract Factory pattern, there are multiple concrete factories. The client has to create different concrete factories explicitly. Is that right? What are the other differences? Furthermore, what is the Factory Method pattern? Is it same as the Factory pattern?

• Background problem of opengl 3d object over iphone camera view

  Hi, I'm loading opengl 3d objects over the iphone camera view. When opengl view is loaded it's loading with a opengl 3d object with black background. The black background color will block the camera view.I just want to clear background color of opengl view so that I could load only the 3d object to the camera view. I had tried glclearcolor(1.0,1.0,1.0,0.0); but no change to background color. I had also tried to clear background color opengl view using [glview setbackgroundColor:[UIColor clearColor]];. No change in back ground color. Can any one help me with this stuff ? I'm new to opengl. Thanks in advance

  As EF 4.0 released, more support to SQL server Stored procedure. Complex Type can be generated automatically for result dataset of SP. But complex type not support by Ria Service. When I try to use ria service combined with EF 4.0, I want to get dataset by SP. This result is not mapped to any entity/table. Some sulutions suggested by community are: 1. Create view to map sp result. (but for EF, if there is no ID or primary, can't be map to any entity) 2. Create Entity to map sp result.(for this, you even need to map SP for CRUD even though I don't need CUD on this sp result) Also above solution can't be automated. As Database objects maybe changed with the time, auto update edm will lost above solution. So what's the solution? I want to put data operation back to DB as possible, so that many changes can be done in DB and no need to rebuild .net assemblies(this cause redeploy).

• Embedding googleVis charts into a web site

  Reading from the googleVis package vignette: "With the googleVis package users can create easily web pages with interactive charts based on R data frames and display them either via the R.rsp package or within their own sites". Following the instructions I was able to see the sample charts, using the plot method for gvis objects. This method by default creates a rsp-file in the rsp/myAnalysis folder of the googleVis package, using the type and chart id information of the object and displays the output using the local web server of the R.rsp package (port 8074 by default). Could anybody help me (or provide some link) on the procedure someone has to follow in order to embed such charts into an existing web site (e.g. a joomla site)?

  I have a parent-child relationship between two objects. Parent :has_many :children Child :belongs_to :parent When creating a new parent, in the same controller, I'm creating the child. @mom = Parent.new @child = Child.new @mom.children << @child That all seems to go okay, but this parent has one more attribute - this parent has a favorite child @mom.favorite_child = @child Seems like this should work, except let's say that this is the 61st child in the database, so it gets an ID of 61 (and I know this is happening, because when I check the database, the child record has an ID of 61). For some reason, when I assign the @child to the parent's "favorite_child" attribute, "favorite_child" gets set to "1" - when I need it to be set to "61". Clues?

  I was searching the net for something like a wiki database, just like wikipedia but instead stores structured content, editable by users. What I was looking for was an online database accessible by everyone where people can design the schema and data with proper versioning of both schema and data. I couldn't find any such site. I am not sure if it is my search skills or if there really is no wiki database as of now. Does anyone out there know anything like this? I think there is a great potential for something like this. A possible example will be a website with a GUI for querying a MySQL DB where any website visitor can create DB objects and populate data.

  Using the new Visual Studio 2010 SDK developing against the MEF based editor structure there's a question: How can I use the MEF editor interfaces to handle snippet behavior in IntelliSense? The ICompletionSession itself is not a problem (e.g. get the available snippets) rather filling the snippet, handling the subsequently expected actions like tab, enter behavior, text replacement, etc. Is there any way to do that without a language service? Checking the built-in behavior in Visual Studio base editor implementation they built the MEF interfaces on top of a set of language service based objects.

• C#: Windows Forms: Getting keystrokes in a panel/picturebox?

  I'm making a level editor for a game using windows forms. The form has several drop down menus, text boxes, etc, where the user can type information. I want to make commands like CTRL + V or CTRL + A available for working within the game world itself, not text manipulation. The game world is represented by a PictureBox contained in a Panel. This event handler isn't ever firing: private System.Windows.Forms.Panel canvas; // ... this.canvas = new System.Windows.Forms.Panel(); // ... this.canvas.PreviewKeyDown += new System.Windows.Forms.PreviewKeyDownEventHandler(this.canvas_PreviewKeyDown); What is the preferred way of doing this? Can a panel even receive keyboard input? I would like to allow the user to use copy/paste/select-all commands when working with the text input, but not when placing objects in the game world.

• silverlight for .NET / CLR based numerical computing on osx

  I'm interested in using F# for numerical work, but my platforms are not windows based. Mono still has a significant performance penalty for programs that generate a significant amount of short-lived objects (as would be typical for functional languages). Silverlight is available on OSX. I had seen some reference indicating that assemblies compiled in the usual way could not be referenced, but not clear on the details. I'm not interested in UIs, but wondering whether could use the VM bundled with silverlight effectively for execution? I would want to be able to reference a large library of numerical models I already have in java (cross-compiled via IKVM to .NET assemblies) and a new codebase written in F#. My hope would be that the silverlight VM on OSX has good performance and can reference external assemblies and native libraries. Is this doable?

  Is there any debugger that allows Python code to be changed while debugging? In other words: run-time exception occurs, debugger stops, I change the code any way I like, and tell the program to continue. I am aware of the problems with this approach, such that references to functions would still point to the old definitions if I redefine the function on the fly, and so on. I am ok with that, since I just want to be able to make small fixes in very simple circumstances. On the other hand, I'm also interested in whether it's theoretically possible to allow changes to Python code without running into these problems: i.e., somehow update all the references to the objects that changed, etc. I'm nearly sure the answer to the second question is no, but if I'm wrong, I'd like to know. EDIT: If my goal (changing the code interactively when an exception occurred, and then continuing execution), is achievable without a debugger - that would be good as well. I don't need to use the debugger.

  I've read Head First Java, and I understand how OOP works. Here's my problem: I'm a PHP programmer, and while I've used OOP in PHP, I'm having trouble figuring out what should be an object and what methods to give it. For example, let's say I have a app that allows people to log in and edit a document. Why should the document be an object if there will ever only be one instance? Should I give the deleteDocument() method to the document object or the admin object? The document is the one being deleted, but the admin is the one performing the action. So my real question is, coming from a procedural background, how do I figure out what should be objects and what should have what methods?

  Hi there, I´ve got a problem with a Combobox in a ListView. I´ve got a class called "Substrate". This class contains an object of a class called "SubstrateType". I want to show the objects of the class "Substrate" in a Listview. Each property of the "Substrate" is presented in the columns of the Listview. For the different "SubstrateType" I want to use a combobox. In the XAML I tried it like this: <ComboBox Name="CBType" ItemsSource="{Binding ElementName=SettingsSubstrate, Path=TypeList}" SelectedItem="{Binding Path=Substrate.SubstrateType}" DisplayMemberPath="Description"/> In the code-behind I got two ObservableCollections. One for all Substrates and one for all possible SubstrateTypes. The combobox displays all SubstrateTypes if you click on it.   I've come up with a simple search view to search for records in my app. The user just enters all parameters in the search box then all this is matched against the database, then results are returned. One of these fields is the phone number....now in the database it's stored in the format XXX-XXX-XXX.   In django I have the following tables and am trying to count the number of votes by item. class Votes(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User) item = models.ForeignKey(Item) class Item(models.Model): name = models.CharField() description = models.TextField() I have the following queryset queryset = Votes.objects.values('item__name').annotate(Count('item')) that returns a list with item name and view count but not the item object. How can I set it up so that the object is returned instead of just the string value? I have been messing around with Manager and Queryset methods, that the right track? Any advice would be appreciated.

• Are there any serialization frameworks for java

  I know there is simple, which seems to be a decent enough XML serializer and i know there is Jaxb which seems to do the job as well. However im after something a bit more generic, so I could serialize my model to Xml, Json, Binary etc. So the models are just dumb objects that just get thrown into some sort of serialization factory and then the relevant output is spat out... I dont see any reason why you couldn't do this with reflection, so for a REALLY simple solution get the relevent public properties, cut off the get or set and make that the element name... i.e getPersonName() would become <PersonName>xxxx</PersonName> or PersonName:XXXXX

• Import OLE Object from Access to MySQL

  I have a table in an access table which contains Product entries, one of the columns has a jpg image stored as an OLE Object. I am trying to import this table to MySQL but nothing seems to work. I have tried the MySQL migration tool but that has a known issue with Access and OLE Objects. (The issue being it doesnt work and leaves the fields blank) I also tried the suggestion on this site and while the data is imported it seems as though the image is getting corrupted in the transfer. When i try to preview the image i just get a binary view, if i save it on disk as a jpg image and try to open it i get an error stating the image is corrupt. The images in Access are fine and can be previewed. Access is storing the data as an OLE Object and when i import it to MySql it is saved in a MediumBlob field. Has anyone had this issue before and how did they resolve it ?
