  • How did you learn to be a programming guru?

    College courses are obviously very helpful, but I hear all the time about great programmers that just "taught themselves," and I wonder how the hell they did it. Online tutorials are nice - online support, even better - but learning with nothing but online resources is difficult to say the least, and I don't know anybody that's experienced enough to help me learn. Even if I did, they probably wouldn't have the time for it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Becoming an application/game designer is something I've wanted to achieve for a long, long time, even if I never use it for a career, and it does mean alot to me. However, I'm constantly thwarted by lack of motivation, or perhaps confidence. Though I've found some good tutorials online, sometimes I feel it just isn't enough to really get me somewhere, and my limited knowledge of computers (and any other technology) in general is hardly reassuring. I'm constantly getting the feeling that maybe it isn't "in me." Well, guess that's it. I just don't want to join the legions of aspiring techies that just gave up.

What is the regexp pattern in javascript? Variable name consists of letters, digits, or the underscore, beginning with letters or the underscore.

  • Java cannot find symbol enum

    Hi, I'm modeling a chess game on Java, and I'm having some problem. Here's what the code looks like (the relevant parts): Enum class Couleur.java: public enum Couleur {BLANC, NOIR} Piece.java: public abstract class Piece { (...) public Piece(Couleur couleurParam){ this.couleurPiece = couleurParam; } (...) } And finally Tour.java: public class Tour extends Piece { (...) public Tour(Couleur couleurParam){ super(couleurParam); } (...) } All the .java files are in the same folder. Yet at compile I get a "cannot find symbol symbol : variable NOIR location: class Plateau" (Plateau is the class that instantiates Tour.) Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong here?   • Programming tutorials for people with zero experience

    A friend of mine is interested in learning how to program computers, but she knows nothing about programming. I suggested that Python might be a good language to start with, but after some googling, I couldn't find any tutorials that covered both programming and Python in an adequate way. I don't want her to go through the tiresome "learn algorithms in pseudocode first" routine. Instead, I'd like a tutorial that will explain the basic ideas while working towards a real goal, e.g. a very simple console game. Does anyone know of any such tutorials? Do you think that I'm mistaken in how I'm handling this? Is Python a bad choice? I know that something like C, C++ or Java won't work - too many details will be very counterproductive. On the other hand, I think that Lisp might be too mathematical and abstract. Python, on the other hand, will let her even do something like coding primitive graphical games in a short period of time.

  • Copy and pasting code into the Python interpreter

    There is a snippet of code that I would like to copy and paste into my Python interpreter. Unfortunately due to Python's sensitivity to whitespace it is not straightforward to copy and paste it a way that makes sense. (I think the whitespace gets mangled) Is there a better way? Maybe I can load the snippet from a file.   • Why has to be size of dynamically-allocated array a static field?

    I have a dummy class where I am testing arrays. I've noticed that when I want to dynamically allocate size of array at runtime, fields that indicate this size have to be static. I know I should probably use collections for this kind of code, but I'm more interested why do these fields have to be static? Is there any particular reason behind this? class Foo { private static int x; private static int y; private int[,] bar = new int[ x, y ]; public Foo( int a, int b ) { x = a; y = b; } }

I've read a lot of things about the benefits of learning C. Before I dig any deeper into Python I wonder if I will be hindered or helped by learning Python first.     I need to parse a string 'Open URN: 100000 LA: ' and get 100000 from it. on python regexp (?<=Open URN: )[0-9]+(?= LA:) works fine but in php it gives following error: preg_match(): Unknown modifier '[' I need it working php, so please help me to solve this problem and tell about difference in python and php regexps.

    I am just starting out with writing jQuery plugins. I wrote three small plugins but I have been simply copying the line into all my plugins without actually knowing what it means. Can someone tell me a little more about these? What does this do? (I know it extends jQuery somehow but is there anything else interesting to know about this) (function($) { })(jQuery); What is the difference between the following two ways of writing a plugin: Type 1: (function($) { $.fn.jPluginName = { }, $.fn.jPluginName.defaults = { } })(jQuery); Type 2: (function($) { $.jPluginName = { } })(jQuery); I could be way off here and maybe both mean the same thing. In some cases, this doesn't seem to be working in a plugin that I was writing using Type 1. Any idea why? But in either case, I would appreciate any explanation.

  • Which MS technologies would be suited for a data intensive application?

    I'm a junior VB.net developer with little application design knowledge. I've been reading a lot of material online regarding different design patterns, frameworks, and methodologies. It's become a bit confusing for me. Right now I'm trying to decide on what language would be best suited to convert an existing VB6 application (with SQL server backend.) I need to update the UI and add more user functionality and reporting capabilities. Initially I was thinking of using WPF and attempting the MVVM model for this big project. Reports would be generated from SSRS. A peer suggested using ASP.net and I don't have enough experience to determine what would be better. The senior programmers here are stuck on using VB6 and don't have any input on what to use. They are encouraging me to use the latest technologies. This application would be for ~20 users in a central location. Ideally I would stick to a Microsoft .net language. Current interface is similar to a datagrid table where the user would click in to see the detail of each record. They would need to have multiple records open at any given time. Internal clients within an intranet How complex are the interactions you expect to implement? not very... displaying data from SQL server to UI. Allow user updates to said data. Typically just one user modifying a record. Yes, windows xp environment, potentially upgrading to Win7. Currently in IE.6 moving to IE7 or 8 within a couple of months. Do users need access from anywhere? No, just from their PC.

  • Finding out event that called a CGI script

    What I want is to be able to make my CGI script do different things depending on what action initiated the calling of the script. For example, if one button is pressed, a database is cleared. If another button is pressed, a form is submitted and that data is added to the database. Should I be doing something like adding the name of the form/button to the end of the POST data submitted in jQuery and then .poping it off in the script? Or is there some other data that's already sent in the POST that I could get from FieldStorage that would give me the information I need to decide what the script should do when it's called? And what if I wasn't using javascript? Would I have to have a hidden field that gets submitted with the name of the form/button? Or is it best to use a different target script for each button on a page?

I have two short questions: I could guess what array means, but once I see it on the code, how can I know to which library it belongs and more information about it? Should I use some kind of python debug commands? How do I insert the content of my input file into x? Thanks
