  • Google Storage for Developers…

    I noticed this today and it seems to be a service that will compete with Amazon S3 and Microsoft’s Azure Blob storage. It’s only open to US developers for now, but I have one burning question: can we transfer directly from Google Storage to another Google service (like YouTube, Docs, etc) without incurring any transfer charges?  The even bigger question is whether all of the APIs will be updated to include this new service and to better amalgamate the existing app services with this one, since storage is so central to everything, it seems to beg the question. via Daring Fireball more later - joel

I’ve never been a fan of the IE 8 – 10 developer tools so I’ve mostly been using Chrome or Firefox’s Firebug. This revamp looks great and seems to work well.   • Embarking on a website redevelopment and all developers pushing to move to ASP.NET 4.0

    Our company is going through a website redevelopment / retooling exercise and we are not quite sure which direction to take. We are told that the website was built in ASP classic and that we should be moving to ASP.NET 4.0. Some developers refuse to do any work in the ASP classic framework citing the advantages of ASP.NET 4.0-- stability, compilation, language support. We are generally happy with our website as is. There are some kinks in the backend involving forms and there is little integration between the CRM of the website and any content management system. Does the move from ASP classic to ASP.NET 4.0 give major advantages to the integration between how content is created, and delivered to our customers?

    I continue to be impressed with the quality of .NET Developers in Israel.. we had a full house last night for a 2+ hour presentation on building business applications with Silverlight and RIA Services.   The audience was very engaged and had lots of good, relevant questions which created a really good conversation.    Check out the slides and demo. I am tring to buy a new laptop since the one that I have is an old one. From my point of view, Microsoft Development tools are becomming more and more resource-consuming (I don't find a suitable reason for it though). So I thought I would go for a Lenovo U260 i-7. I already tried: Craig's list got about 10 resumes, but most couldn't answer our technical questions StackOverflow Careers no responses What sites did you have success with finding good developers? UPDATE 1: Wanted to provide some more information: My company is in NJ. We are a small startup. Less then 10 people. Monster, Dice, CareerBuilder all charge like $500 a month per posting. Seems a bit much. Also only Dice is specifically targeting technical positions. With monster and career builder I am a bit worried about having to go through hundreds of resumes that don't apply.

    Great news! Oracle WebLogic Server is now free for developers! What does this mean for you? That you as a developer are permited to: "[...] deploy the programs only on your single developer desktop computer (of any type, including physical, virtual or remote virtual), to be used and accessed by only (1) named developer."     Our interview process currently consists of several coding questions, technical questions and experiences at their current and previous jobs. Coding questions are typically a single method that does something (Think of it as fizzbuzz or reverse a string kind of question) We are planning on introducing an additional step where we give them a business problem and ask them to draw a flowchart, activity, class or a sequence diagram. We feel that our current interview process does not let us evaluate the candidate's thinking at a higher level (which is relevant for architect/senior level positions). To give you some context, we are a mid size software company with around 30 developers in the team. If you have this step in your interview process, how has it improved your interviewing veracity? If not, what else has helped you evaluate the candidates better from a technical perspective.

And he told me that he planned to change of business, I mean, he wants to get off developing cause he doesn't think that it has future. "There will come days were you could have a job as a developer but you would never get rich" he said. "Nowadays is more important to have an idea and develop it in a product than being a software developer. Today you can find a lot of applications that can help you to make it. We have already non-sql databases, better cases than 10 years ago and other tools much of them free, everything is directed to depend less of developers and you'll see it more 10 years from now" Do you agree with that?
