• Disable click action after letting up a mouse wheel hold scroll in Chrome browser

  I apologize in advance for the confusing title, not sure what the best way to describe this action is. Basically, I am holding down the mouse wheel and then moving the mouse itself up and down to scroll (not actually rotating the mouse wheel forward or backward). This is often the most convenient way to scroll for me. Unfortunately, when I scroll in this way, and then let up the mouse wheel again, it performs a click action, so if the arrow happens to land on a link when I let up the mouse wheel, I end up inadvertently clicking that link. How can I prevent the mouse from performing a click action when I use the mouse wheel to scroll by holding it down and then letting it up when I am done scrolling?   Hello! I have Cisco Catalyst 65XX, many VLANs and about ~1300 users. Users connected to some D-Link switches with second-level management. D-Link switches come to my Cisco Catalyst 65XX by VLANs. So, how I can shape traffic per user? If I use something like this: access-list 145 permit ip any host 192.168.0.1 access-list 145 permit ip any host 192.168.0.2 access-list 145 permit ip any host 192.168.0.3 ... int Gi0/1 traffic-shape group 145 128000 7936 7936 1000 will I have shape traffic per user or it will shape traffic only on interface? I mean - every user will have 128kb/s (per user) or everybody will have 128kb/s ? If it will be for everybody, then what is the solution of my question: how every user can have 128kb/s ?

• Is VBoxManage guestcontrol passing parameters incorrectly?

  I had an idea of using my Windows VM (on a Ubuntu host) to open itms:// links (for iTunes) from the host. So, I'm using vboxmanage guestcontrol to make this happen. I have a script (win_vm_launcher.sh) that takes a link as the argument, and passes it to the host like this: vboxmanage guestcontrol "$VM" exec --image 'C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe' --username "$USER" --password "$PASSWORD" -- /c start "$@" This works if I copy a link from my browser, and change http to itms. E.g., for https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598, I can do win_vm_launcher.sh itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598 and it works fine. The album opens up in iTunes on my VM. However, when I click a "View in iTunes" link from the iTunes site, it adds an extra parameter to the URI (specifically, the referrer), so it looks something like itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739 Unfortunately, if I try to run win_vm_launcher.sh itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739 it insteads opens up a regular Command Prompt window with the title "itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739". I don't even know how to set the command prompt window title, so I'm not sure how that's happening. If I run the command in the guest, it works fine, opening the album in iTunes: cmd /c start itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739 I found a VirtualBox bug that seems somewhat related, but not exactly. It probably doesn't matter, but my host is Ubuntu 12.04, and my guest is Windows 7. So, any idea if vboxmanage is incorrectly passing the arguments, and if so, is there a way around it? If I can't figure out the right way to do it, I'll end up having to process each argument, and stripping out any parameters on any URIs. P.S. I tried creating a batch script (out.bat) like this: echo %1 > %TEMP%/testing.txt and then running it from the host like this: vboxmanage guestcontrol "$VM" exec --image 'C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe' --username "$USER" --password "$PASSWORD" -- /c "C:\path\to\out.bat" "itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739" It ran as expected, and when I open %TEMP%/testing.txt, it contained: "itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739" including the quotes. So, it sort of passed the parameter correctly (not sure why it still had quotes), so maybe the problem is with cmd.exe, or even the start command. I'm stymied.

Louis Davidson, Jessica M. Moss: Pro SQL Server 2012 Relational Database Design and Implementation – the best SQL Server focused data modeling book I know by two of my friends. • Best of "The Moth" 2012

  As with previous years (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) I’d like to wish you a Happy New Year and share a quick review of my blog posts from 2012 (plus speculate on my 2013 blog focus). 1. Like 2011, my professional energy in 2012 was dominated by C++ AMP including articles, blog posts, demos, slides, and screencasts. I summarized that over two posts on the official team blog that I linked to from my blog post here titled: “The last word on C++ AMP”, which also subtly hinted at my change of role which I confirmed in my other post titled “Visual Studio Continued Excitement”. 2. Even before I moved to the Visual Studio Diagnostics team in September, earlier in the year I had started sharing blog posts with my thoughts on that space, something I expect to continue in the new year. You can read some of that in these posts: The way I think about Diagnostic tools, Live Debugging, Attach to Process in Visual Studio, Start Debugging in Visual Studio, Visual Studio Exceptions dialogs. 3. What you should also expect to see more of is thoughts, tips, checklists, etc around Professional Communication and on how to be more efficient and effective with that, e.g. Link instead of Attaching, Sending Outlook Invites, Responding to Invites, and OOF checklist. 4. As always, I sometimes share random information, and noteworthy from 2012 is the one where I outlined the Visual Studio versioning story (“Visual Studio 11 not 2011”, and after that post VS 11 was officially baptized VS2012) and the one on “How I Record Screencasts”. Looking back, unlike 2011 there were no posts in 2012 related to device development, e.g. for Windows Phone.   The graphical Interface in my system is garbled with some text. At the beginning I thought it was due to java and tomcat that I installed. But after removing java and tomcat, it is still the same.   In IPv4, fragmentation is done by routers on way to the destination if DF(do not fragment) flag is not set in the IP packet. Once a packet is fragmented, its fragments may take different paths (due to various reasons like topology changes) to the destination. If, on some link again in the path to destination, one routers find that the link MTU is smaller than the frame size, then either the packet needs to be fragmented or dropped. Can fragments of a packet be refragmented again? If yes, what will be the value of MF flag in the new individual fragments created by this?

  So, when I want to link my users to a specific page I always use (in php): "http://" . $_SERVER["HTTP_HOST"] . "/page.php", to be sure that the link points to the page they're currently surfing (and not one of the server aliases). But with IDN names, HTTP_HOST is set to "xn--hemmabst-5za.net" (for example) - which of course works but doesn't look very nice. Is there a way to have HTTP_HOST set to the correct IDN name in these cases (in this case - "hemmabäst.net")? I rather do it in Apache before it comes to PHP, because otherwise I'd have to replace all my usage of $_SERVER["HTTP_HOST"]. Any ideas?

  The sys.dm_db_index_operational_stats Dynamic Management Function returns information about the IO, locking, and access methods for the indexes that you currently have on your SQL Server Instance. This function takes four input parameters which are (1) database_id, (2) object_id, (3) index_id, and (4) partition_number. Let’s have a look at the results from this function against our AdventureWorks2012 database. This function returns a ton of columns, so not only will I not attempt to describe each of the columns, I wont even attempt to display all of them here. My query below will give you a subset of the columns returned from this function. SELECT database_id, object_id, index_id, partition_number, leaf_insert_count, leaf_delete_count, leaf_update_count, leaf_ghost_count, nonleaf_insert_count, nonleaf_delete_count, nonleaf_update_count, range_scan_count, forwarded_fetch_count, row_lock_count, row_lock_wait_count, page_lock_count, page_lock_wait_count, Index_lock_promotion_attempt_count, index_lock_promotion_count, page_compression_attempt_count, page_compression_success_count FROM sys.dm_db_index_operational_stats(db_id('AdventureWorks2012'), NULL, NULL, NULL) The first four columns in the result set represent the values that we passed in as our input parameters. The nonleaf levels would refer to the intermediate and root index levels. In the middle of these you see a leaf_ghost_count column, which represents the number of records that have been logically deleted and marked as “ghosted”  and are waiting on the background ghost cleanup process to physically remove them. The range_scan_count column represents the number of range or table scans that have been performed against an index. The forwarded_fetch_count column represents the number of rows that were returned from a forwarding row pointer. The row_lock_count and row_lock_wait_count represent the number of row locks that have been requested for an index and the number of times SQL has had to wait on a row lock respectively. The page_lock_count and page_lock_wait_count represent the number of page locks that have been requested for an index and the number of times SQL has had to wait on a page lock respectively. The index_lock_promotion_attempt_count represents the number of times the database engine has attempted to promote a lock to the index level. The index_lock_promotion_count column displays how many times that index lock promotion was successful. Lastly the page_compression_attempt_count and page_compression_success_count represents how many times a page was attempted to be compressed and how many times the attempt was successful. As you can see there is a ton of information returned from this DMV. The DMV we reviewed on yesterday (sys.dm_db_index_usage_stats) provided you with good information on when and how indexes have been used, but this DMF takes an even deeper dive into these statistics. If you are interested in performing a very detailed analysis on the operational stats of your indexes, this is not only a good place to start, but more than likely the best place. • CentOS - massive usage on loopback interface

  Hi, I have a CentOS installation which is running fairly smoothly. Today I ran ifconfig mainly to see what sort of usage has been coming across the ethernet interface, and to also check my link speed. • Installing pgAdmin III for postgreSQL 9.2

  I have a windows server that runs postgresql 9.2. I want to hit it using pgAdmin III from my Ubuntu Linux 12.10 workstation box. I installed pgAdmin III from synaptic and also tried direct download from postgreSQL site using software installer. Regardlesss, I can get only get pgAdmin III for postgresql 9.1. When I run pgAdmin III and point to my server I get an error message telling me that the database is 9.2 and my pgAdmin III is for 9.1, isn't compatible with 9.2. I can access the server itself fine OK from the Ubuntu box - I have Python programs that hit the database with no problems - but I need pgAdmin III for 9.2 running under Ununtu Linux 12.10. Is it available? Where do I get it?

• Happy 3rd Birthday SilverlightCream!

  Happy 3rd Birthday!     Yesterday (May 16) was the 'Birthday' of SilverlightCream, which started just after MIX in 2007 with a post "Interesting Silverlight posts today: Silverlight Control & Silverlight Pad". Too many good posts flying around led me to want to archive them, particularly since I was being aggregated at a new site Silverlight.net, and I could give some of that 'reach' to the community. Saturday's post was number 862, and as of that post, there were 5697 blog posts archived in the database all tagged up and searchable at SilverlightCream.com using the search page. The search needs to be better, and that's another discussion, but it does work. The blog didn't begin life as the SilverlightCream blog, as is obvious from the name, but once I realized people were following it closely, I've tried to keep the signal-to-noise ratio very high. I even secured another blog for when I just want to rant about something to keep that stuff out of this one :) If you've been around since MIX07 days you've heard all this, but after talking to some people at MIX10 I realized not everyone knows all the ways the information is presented, so I figured doing a post like this once a year probably isn't a bad idea :) I scrounge through an ever-growing list of blogs (right now sitting at 505) looking for good stuff. I try to spin through the list every day, but with the list growing that large, it's getting tough. I usually use it as a background task while working or watching TV. If I just sit and go through the blogs it takes about an hour. The list is long enough now that from time to time, I'll only get partway through it and have 10 to 13 entries, so I'll just stop there and go on the next day... I don't like to have more than 15 in any single post. It's all pattern recognition as in "seen that", "seen that", "that's new", etc... so if you're a blogger, look at a heading below for some comments about blogging from my perspective. When I see something new, I make sure you're not pulling a 'Mike Taulty' on me and dumping 6 or 8 new posts in one day :), and I tag the ones I want to review. If there's not a lot going on, I may just push the posts as I come across them. Some days there may be 60 posts in that 'to review' list! Some are non-Silverlight, some are essentially duplicates of others, some are demos, ads, new releases of something, session materials, etc. I push lots of material into a database at WynApse.com, and the "Tagged Posts" menu on the left sidebar there takes you to a tag cloud of (at this very moment) "9224 articles tagged 13915 different ways using 459 unique tags". There are links in there on Gibson guitars, Jazz Guitar instructional stuff, Ford F-250 links, and tons of technical and non-technical stuff I've been aggregating for about 5 years now. So when I decide to blog (or shoutout) something, I first push it into the database at WynApse.com. Then I tag it all up and push it into the database at SilverlightCream.com. Then it gets pushed to @SilverlightNews. For a little over a year now, we're tracking unique IP hits on posts launched from either the blog post or from one of the SilverlightCream.com pages, and the posts with top hits from unique IP addresses in the last 7 days are displayed in a 'Skim' page at SilverlightCream... and that page needs work as well. The Skim page and tracking was the brainchild of my buddy Michael Washington. What I blog/shoutout After some time doing posts, I decided there were things that probably have no need to be searchable, but are good information, so I post those as 'Shoutouts'. Eventually I also decided the Shoutouts should get posted to @SilverlightNews, and that's now taking place. Notes to bloggers Remember I said spinning throught the Big List-o-BlogsTM is pattern recognition... that means I don't spend a lot of time on any individual blog deciding if it has new content. If you're familiar with the term 'Above the Fold', then you're probably ok. If I have to scroll the page to see if there's something new, or wade through some maze of menus, I'm probably going to miss new stuff. Likewise if you only show the latest on the front page and make it a puzzle to find the rest of them, or if you make the titles and initial graphics almost identical to the previous article, I'll miss it. Another thing is name/brand-recognition. Far be it for me (WynApse) to comment on someone blogging with a pseudonym, but if you want to get get some recognition, you are going to want your name to be available somewhere. I can think right off the top of my head of a couple good blogs that I have no idea of the individuals' real names. I can pull that off a bit because I've been around so long almost everyone knows who I am, but if you're new to the blog-o-sphere, being able to be name-recognized is as important as getting your brand out there. Kick my tires Finally, stuff happens... I may hit the wrong key and delete your blog, or a post might slip past me and I not realize it's new because of the naming, and never blog it. Some bloggers have figured out that if they submit (one way or another) to me, their posts will go out next. I try to honor anyone that takes the time to submit with a quicker 'Cream posting. Thanks! • pam_filter usage prevent passwd from working

  Hello everybody, I have PAM+LDAP SSL running on Debian Lenny, it works well. I always want to restrict who's able to connect, in the past I used pam_groupdn for that but I recently got a situation where I has to accept 2 different groups. So I used pam_filter like this : pam_filter |(groupattribute=server)(groupattribute=restricted_server) The problem is that with this statement, passwd doesn't work anymore with LDAP accounts. Any idea why ?
