• Selecting a Validation Framework - ASP.NET

  Which validation framework would you prefer for a webforms application. This would be for a rather large complex app. I would want to specify rulesets and business validation in a single place and integrate it both on the client and server side.   I need to ask a general question. I don't have the code in front of me because I'm writing this on my iPhone. I have a Class that represents a certain XML schema. I have a SPROC that returns this XML. What I need to do is deserialize the XML to this Class. XML: <xml> <person> <firstName>Bob</firstName> <lastName>Robby</lastName> </person> </xml> I need to deserialize this XML into the custom Person Class so I can loop through this Model and spit it out in the View. I'm sure there's some kind of casting involved, I just don't know how to do it.

  I want to build a page for end users to visit (in our MPLS Network) and it show the following information in regards to them: Computer Name OS Disk Space Memory IP Address Active Directory User Name Password Expiration Time (As defined by Global Policy) Maybe a few other things such as Trend Micro Office current version vs. their version, # of MS Updates needed (we utilize WSUS), and a few other things in the future. My question is how would I pull this information from the user when they visit the page? What is the proper function for this? Anyone have examples they wish to share for me to learn by if possible?

  Ok, I thought I understood these topics well, but I guess not, so hopefully someone here can clear this up. Page.IsAsync seems to be broken. It always returns false. But ScriptManager.IsInAsyncPostBack seems to work, sort of. It returns true during the round trip for controls inside UpdatePanels. This is good; I can tell if it's a partial postback or a regular one. ScriptManager.IsInAsyncPostBack returns false however for async Page Methods. Why is this? It's not a regular postback, I'm just calling a public static method on the page. It causes a problem because I also realized that if you have a control with AutoPostBack = false, it won't trigger a postback on it's own, but if it has an event handler on the page, that event handler code WILL run on the next postback, regardless of how the postback occurred, IF the value has changed. i.e. if I tweak a dropdown and then hit a button, that dropdown's handler code will fire. This is ok, except that it will also happen during Page Method calls, and I have no way to know the difference. Any thoughts?

• listview tile layout problem (vb.net)

  hi guys, I have a listview which displays (eventually) an album cover of an itunes play list with the album name under it. the problem I am having is that I cannot get the album art (currently a blank square) ABOVE the album name. It always is on the side... how do I do it? I've tried adding column headers and alsorts... code to set up the listview Dim myImageList As ImageList albumList.View = View.Tile albumList.TileSize = New Size(120, 150) ' Initialize the item icons. myImageList = New ImageList() myImageList.Images.Add(Image.FromFile("c:/test.jpg")) myImageList.ImageSize = New Size(80, 80) albumList.LargeImageList = myImageList I then do a loop to display each album name which uses Dim item0 As New ListViewItem(New String() _ {Albums(i).Name}, 0) albumList.Items.Add(item0) the output is http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n122/mfacer/Screenshot2010-05-02at164815.png but as i said, I want the album name under the orange box.... any ideas??   We're currently in the process of re-creating a brand new security model that dwarfs our existing process. Right now, we plan on grabbing a user's roles during the login process and then using a Base Page class to check if the user has the role of the corresponding page the user is navigating to. We can limit the menu's options by the user's roles as well, but we have had problems with users navigating to pages in our system by typing them in or having old bookmarks. Obviously, we need some sort of page level access. A simple function in our Base Page class that checks the role in the Arraylist against the page's assigned role would work, but I was wondering if there was any built-in functionality to support this or a cleaner solution possibly.

  I am attempting to generate the body of an email in Outlook 2007 from the text of a Word 2007 document in VB. I have access to both the Word and Outlook object libraries, and I can read from the Word document to get a string and write it to Outlook, but I need to keep the formatting from the Word document intact. The purpose will be to allow users to edit the word document and always have the emails my program generates be in sync with the document. Does anyone know how to do this?

• Problem with sendkeys in .NET

  I have a windows application, where I am using send keys to navigate from one window to another. My send key sequence is like activating another window with in my app, and sending key strokes to that window. But the key strokes I am sending is getting updated in the same window where I am activating the other window. But after few key strokes it is going to the other window. Seems like synchonization issue with send keys. Is there a way to specify the operation of the current send key is finished, before sending the next sendkey.

  I've got some code that creates a list of AD groups that the user is a member of, with the intention of saying 'if user is a member of GroupX then allow admin access, if not allow basic access'. I was using a StringCollection to store this list of Groups, and intended to use the Contains method to test for membership of my admin group, but the problem is that this method only compares the full string - but my AD groups values are formatted as cn=GroupX, etc.... I want to be easily able to determine if a particular substring (i.e. 'GroupX') appears in the list of groups. I could always iterate through the groups check each for a substring representing my AD group name, but I'm more interested in finding out if there is a 'better' way. Clearly there are a number of repositories for the list of Groups, and it appears that Generics (List(Of String)) are more commonly preferred (which I may well implement anyway) but there is no in-built means of checking for a substring using this method either. Any suggestions? Or should I just iterated through the list of groups?

  Having a bit of trouble using the List.Find with a custom predicate i have a function that does this private function test () Dim test As Integer = keys.Find(AddressOf FindByOldKeyAndName).NewKey here's the function for the predicate Private Shared Function FindByOldKeyAndName(ByVal k As KeyObj) As Boolean If k.OldKey = currentKey.OldKey And k.KeyName = currentKey.KeyName Then Return True Else Return False End If End Function by doing it this way means i have to have a shared "currentKey" object in the class, and i know there has to be a way to pass in the values i'm interested in of CurrentKey (namely, keyname, and oldkey) ideally i'd like to call it by something like keys.Find(AddressOf FindByOldKeyAndName(Name,OldVal)) however when i do this i get compiler errors. How do i call this method and pass in the values?

• How to build a simulation of a login hardware token in .Net

  Hi, i have a hardware token for remote login to some citrix environment. When i click the button on the device, i get an id and i can use that to login to the citrix farm. I can click the button as much as i like, and every time a new code gets generated, and they all work. Now i want to secure my private website likewise, but not with the hardware token, but with a 'token app' on my phone. So i run an app on my phone, generate a key, and use that to (partly) authenticate myself on the server. But here's the point: i don't know how it works! How can i generate 1, 2 or 100 keys at one time which i can see (on the server) are all valid, but without the server and the phone app having contact (the hardware token also is an 'offline' solution). Can you help me with a hint how i would do this? This is what i thought of so far: the phone app and the server app know (hardcoded) the same encryption key. The phone app encrypts the current time. The server app decrypts the string to the current time and if the diff between that time and the actual server time is less than 10 minutes it's an ok. Difficult for other users to fake a key, but encryption gives such nasty strings to enter, and the hardware token gives me nice things like 'H554TU8' And this is probably not how the real hardware token works, because the server and the phone app must 'know' the same encryption key.
