• Development Approach: User Interface In or Domain Model Out?

  While I've never delivered anything using Smalltalk, my brief time playing with it has definitely left its mark. The only way to describe the experience is MVC the way it was meant to be. Essentially, all the heavy lifting for your application is done in the business objects (or domain model if you are so inclined). The standard controls are bound to the business objects in some way. For example, a text box is mapped to an object's field (the field itself is an object so it's easy to do). A button would mapped to a method. This is all done with a very simple and natural API. We don't have to think about binding objects, etc. It just works. Yet, in many newer languages and APIs you are forced to think from the outside in. First with C++ and MFC, and now with C# and WPF, Microsoft has gotten it's developer world hooked on GUI builders where you build your application by implementing event handlers. Java Swing development isn't so different, only you are writing the code to instantiate the controls on the form yourself. For some projects, there may never even be a domain model--just event handlers. I've been in and around this model for most of my carreer. Each way forces you to think differently. With the Smalltalk approach, your domain is smart while your GUI is dumb. With the default VisualStudio approach, your GUI is smart while your domain model (if it exists) is rather anemic. Many developers that I work with see value in the Smalltalk approach, and try to shoehorn that approach into the VisualStudio environment. WPF has some dynamic binding features that makes it possible; but there are limitations. Inevitably some code that belongs in the domain model ends up in the GUI classes. So, which way do you design/develop your code? Why? GUI first. User interaction is paramount. Domain first. I need to make sure the system is correct before we put a UI on it. There's pros and cons for either approach. Domain model fits in there with crystal cathedrals and pie in the sky. GUI fits in there with quick and dirty (sometimes really dirty). And for an added bonus: How do you make sure the code is maintainable?

• Did I choose proper career path? [closed]

  I am a C# Junior. My company has it's own enterprise documents-flow system written, my job along with 10 other programmers is to write modules/add-ons for it. I am totally bored of this job, I dont like Microsoft's technologies stack (dont hate me here, just subjective), but it's plain boring, enterprise is boring (subjective again, everyone's tastes differ), days on this work last long and I am tired of it. In short - I dont like my job. In my spare time I am doing PHP-development and I totally like it. I am also doing web-design, so I am LAMP-kind of guy who loves his Ubuntu and does design aswell. I know that most programmers don't do design themselves, so some person is either all about design or all about coding, but I enjoy both and do both. I often get interesting sites orders, I love to make whole websites with all the design, I love the feeling of site completeness, I enjoy talking with customers. I like that PHP is simple and skill cap is lower than one of java, meaning I can become expert in it after some years. But C# (and J2EE also) pay more, and I am doing really good in C#. But I dont like it. I can go for J2EE, platform itself seems more fun to me rather than .NET, but EE development is still boring to me. But it seems higher payed, easier to find job (since PHP is too common for its easiness. But if you are expert in something it doesnt matter, right? Just a higher skillcap.) Question: I want to go on with freelance. I want to have an opportunity to start my own startup in web. Actually I have a browser-game already written by myself, it earns me around 500$ per month which I am really proud of since I am 21 only and still noob in coding. I want to find part-time PHP job. 3 days per week so I can get some stable income, I can work in team and learn from them, social factor matters aswell as ensurance and diversity. I also want my total income (freelance + part-time job + own startup maybe)to be not too much less than one I have working in EE development sector. Maximum of 25% lower, but not more. Is it all possible if I stick with web-development (LAMP + HTML/CSS/JS/Jquery/AJAX)? Or is it easier to reach my goals with EE development?

• "Collection Wrapper" pattern - is this common?

  A different question of mine had to do with encapsulating member data structures inside classes. In order to understand this question better please read that question and look at the approach discussed. One of the guys who answered that question said that the approach is good, but if I understood him correctly - he said that there should be a class existing just for the purpose of wrapping the collection, instead of an ordinary class offering a number of public methods just to access the member collection. For example, instead of this: class SomeClass{ // downright exposing the concrete collection. Things[] someCollection; // other stuff omitted Thing[] getCollection(){return someCollection;} } Or this: class SomeClass{ // encapsulating the collection, but inflating the class' public interface. Thing[] someCollection; // class functionality omitted. public Thing getThing(int index){ return someCollection[index]; } public int getSize(){ return someCollection.length; } public void setThing(int index, Thing thing){ someCollection[index] = thing; } public void removeThing(int index){ someCollection[index] = null; } } We'll have this: // encapsulating the collection - in a different class, dedicated to this. class SomeClass{ CollectionWrapper someCollection; CollectionWrapper getCollection(){return someCollection;} } class CollectionWrapper{ Thing[] someCollection; public Thing getThing(int index){ return someCollection[index]; } public int getSize(){ return someCollection.length; } public void setThing(int index, Thing thing){ someCollection[index] = thing; } public void removeThing(int index){ someCollection[index] = null; } } This way, the inner data structure in SomeClass can change without affecting client code, and without forcing SomeClass to offer a lot of public methods just to access the inner collection. CollectionWrapper does this instead. E.g. if the collection changes from an array to a List, the internal implementation of CollectionWrapper changes, but client code stays the same. Also, the CollectionWrapper can hide certain things from the client code - from example, it can disallow mutation to the collection by not having the methods setThing and removeThing. This approach to decoupling client code from the concrete data structure seems IMHO pretty good. Is this approach common? What are it's downfalls? Is this used in practice?

• Should we persist with an employee still writing bad code after many years?

  I've been assigned the task of managing developers for a well-established company. They have a single developer who specialises in all their C++ coding (since forever), but the quality of the work is abysmal. Code reviews and testing have revealed many problems, one of the worst being memory leaks. The developer has never tested his code for leaks, and I discovered that the applications could leak many MBs with only a minute of use. User's were reporting huge slowdowns, and his take was, "it's nothing to do with me - if they quit and restart, it's all good again." I've given him tools to detect and trace the leaks, and sat down with him for many hours to demonstrate how the tools are used, where the problems occur, and what to do to fix them. We're 6 months down the track, and I assigned him to write a new module. I reviewed it before it was integrated into our larger code base, and was dismayed to discover the same bad coding as before. The part that I find incomprehensible is that some of the coding is worse than amateurish. For example, he wanted a class (Foo) that could populate an object of another class (Bar). He decided that Foo would hold a reference to Bar, e.g.: class Foo { public: Foo(Bar& bar) : m_bar(bar) {} private: Bar& m_bar; }; But (for other reasons) he also needed a default constructor for Foo and, rather than question his initial design, he wrote this gem: Foo::Foo() : m_bar(*(new Bar)) {} So every time the default constructor is called, a Bar is leaked. To make matters worse, Foo allocates memory from the heap for 2 other objects, but he didn't write a destructor or copy constructor. So every allocation of Foo actually leaks 3 different objects, and you can imagine what happened when a Foo was copied. And - it only gets better - he repeated the same pattern on three other classes, so it isn't a one-off slip. The whole concept is wrong on so many levels. I would feel more understanding if this came from a total novice. But this guy has been doing this for many years and has had very focussed training and advice over the past few months. I realise he has been working without mentoring or peer reviews most of that time, but I'm beginning to feel he can't change. So my question is, would you persist with someone who is writing such obviously bad code?

• Architecture or Pattern for handling properties with custom setter/getter?

  Current Situation: I'm doing a simple MVC site for keeping journals as a personal project. My concern is I'm trying to keep the interaction between the pages and the classes simplistic. Where I run into issues is the password field. My setter encrypts the password, so the getter retrieves the encrypted password. public class JournalBook { private IEncryptor _encryptor { get; set; } private String _password { get; set; } public Int32 id { get; set; } public String name { get; set; } public String description { get; set; } public String password { get { return this._password; } set { this.setPassword(this._password, value, value); } } public List<Journal> journals { get; set; } public DateTime created { get; set; } public DateTime lastModified { get; set; } public Boolean passwordProtected { get { return this.password != null && this.password != String.Empty; } } ... } I'm currently using model-binding to submit changes or create new JournalBooks (like below). The problem arises that in the code below book.password is always null, I'm pretty sure this is because of the custom setter. [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(JournalBook book) { // Create the JournalBook if not null. if (book != null) this.JournalBooks.Add(book); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } Question(s): Should I be handling this not in the property's getter/setter? Is there a pattern or architecture that allows for model-binding or another simple method when properties need to have custom getters/setters to manipulate the data? To summarize, how can I handle the password storing with encryption such that I have the following, Robust architecture I don't store the password as plaintext. Submitting a new or modified JournalBook is as easy as default model-binding (or close to it).

• Is this a valid implementation of the repository pattern?

  I've been reading up about the repository pattern, with a view to implementing it in my own application. Almost all examples I've found on the internet use some kind of existing framework rather than showing how to implement it 'from scratch'. Here's my first thoughts of how I might implement it - I was wondering if anyone could advise me on whether this is correct? I have two tables, named CONTAINERS and BITS. Each CONTAINER can contain any number of BITs. I represent them as two classes: class Container{ private $bits; private $id; //...and a property for each column in the table... public function __construct(){ $this->bits = array(); } public function addBit($bit){ $this->bits[] = $bit; } //...getters and setters... } class Bit{ //some properties, methods etc... } Each class will have a property for each column in its respective table. • Differences between a retail and wholesale website, and how difficult would it be to integrate them? [closed]

  I was told to come here for some guidance, I know that my questions can be quite broad, but I just really want some kind of direction to go towards (links, articles, etc). So here it goes: For the past month I have been planning and started implementing a wholesale website, but plans got changed on me and I need to allow both retail and wholesale orders which will also depend on whether the account is a regular customer or also has a seller account. There are various types of products and it has been decided that I would use subcategories as tables to organize them and allow various specific item fields. So here are some of my specific questions: How different is the database structure for each item to be available for both wholesale and retail? Will it just be adding a quantity column and have two different pricing, or much more complicated? I am unaware if there's any price tables but would that be more difficult? They use Quickbooks POS software, how difficult/inefficient will it be to update inventory quantities if they have like 2000-4000 products? And what would be the best ways to extract the information and update the system? I know it export an excel spreadsheet so maybe a suggested php plugin for it? How difficult is this project in your professional opinion, and how big should a team usually be? (At the moment it is just me.) Projected time for planning, implementation, and quality assurance in accordance to team size? I am an entry level developer and I know that I do not have enough knowledge to direct myself on this website...What kind of web developer skills will I need to find to help me? (My company is willing to hire people to get this website done as fast as possible.) Also, what would be some great questionnaires to ask the product stakeholder about what he wants from the website? (He has made it clear he is neither computer or internet savvy...) Sorry for the amount of questions, I'm an entry level web developer and do not have a senior to look up to for guidance. I have knowledge in HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin. I have never used any frameworks like Zend, Magento, etc, and is doing this all from scratch. So far the website is built in an object oriented way, MVC architecture to the best of my abilities, but I have many doubts because I would really want to have this done right.   Nginx currently will not start due to the error mentioned in the title. • Email with extra '.com' behind sender email address

  Currently I had a situation where I sent an email to [email protected], but when I receive mail from [email protected], it showed as [email protected], with extra '.com' behind the email address, this just happen within this week. Before this, I didn't change any setting, currently I am using Outlook 2010. When I checked the email in webmail, it also showed it as [email protected]. It seem that it has nothing to do with Outlook. However, I also tried on Thunderbird 16.0.1, but still the problem is the same. Has anyone experienced this before? Is the problem caused by the sender or receiver? Confluence sits on port 8080 while frevvo sits on port 8082. I want to redirect both of them to port 80 via Apache HTTP web server so that it doesn't get blocked by company proxies. I've been using the document on Atlassian that shows me how to run confluence behind Apache (I can't post a second URL due to being a newbie here) I've successfully redirected Confluence from port 8080 to port 80 so I can now access Confluence using www.example.com/confluence. My deployment in Azure consists of a Worker Role with two instances which connect to an Azure VM running my Memcached server. Everything works pretty well, my session is persisted and retrieved by any of the two instances transparently. The problem arises when the session is idle for about 4 minutes; everything points out that the Azure Loadbalancer is closing the spymemcached connection to the VM after some period of inactivity.   Hello I am trying to setup nginx with stub status so I can monitor nginx requests etc.. with serverdensity.com. However It seems I lost "include" part in my nginx.conf and now none of vhosts in sites-enabled work. • wget mirroring, subdomains and directories and cookies

  Hi all, I have an account on a web page that is now "full" (ie I have used up all my allocated space) and I would like to make a mirror of that site. wget seems like the thing to use. The problem is that I would only like to mirror the sites the lie within this directory http://user.domain.com/room/2324343/transcript/ (and sub-directories). Whilst saving the correct stylesheets, javascripts and css etc which exist in different directories. There as also uploaded files that are linked to within the pages in the transcript directory (on different directories) that I would like to download/mirror (theses are in a variatey of formats .exe, .py, .png, .app (and many more)). There are also images that are on different severs that are on these pages. Also I would like it if the links (which are sometimes relative , sometimes absoulute (but to internal things), sometimes external ) worked correctly so that if they link to things that have been downloaded(mirrored) they work fine (without internet connection), but if they link to things that are external or havent been mirrored they link to the external site. Basically so they work as expected. Another problem is that you have to log in to acess the site. Can wget be used to acomplish this or is there a better way? either way how do I achive this? (I have asked this question at stackoverflow.com/questions/2190115/wget-mirroring-subdomains-and-directories-and-cookies but it was recommended that I try asking it here)

• nginx+passenger +static websites= problems

  I've got a Rails app that nginx serves through passenger. I'd also like to serve some static content for a different domain name. But when I add another server block to my config, both websites become unavailable returning HTTP 204. What have I done wrong? What can I do to fix it? Here's the http block of my nginx.conf: https://gist.github.com/4243256 Here's what I added : server { listen 80; server_name website2; root /var/www/website2; location / { index index.html; } } It's going to be a Rails app as well at some point in the future (though I'm not really sure about that, maybe I'm going to use a different back-end solution.) Either way, I don't want anything dynamic to eat away the resources just yet. As of now, this website consists of nothing but index.html and stylesheet.css files in the root directory. • phpBB configuration problem under Nginx

  Hi, I have a phpBB site running with Nginx (PHP via FastCGI). It works OK. However, some specific actions like moving or deleting a topic fail. Instead, I'm redirected to the forum index. I think it is a problem with the URLs redirection or rewriting.
