  On Windows 7, dir or tree can't show unicode characters, even starting cmd with cmd /U So I would press Window Key + R to run something, and type in cmd /U so that the content might handle Unicode. And then using dir or tree /F, the content in Unicode won't show as Unicode. (in Window Explorer (file manager), the Unicode will show) Is there a way to handle it? To get Unicode characters to test your filenames, you can go to http://news.google.com/news?edchanged=1&ned=tw and you will be able to get many Unicode characters there (UTF-8)

• 32-bit Ubuntu or 64-bit w/Intel Atom D510 w/4GB RAM?

  (I've seen this question and some related ones, and perhaps this is a duplicate although part of my question is specific to the Atom D510.) I'm going to be installing Ubuntu on a new silent desktop as my latest (and hopefully last) attempt to switch from Windows to Linux for at least most everyday tasks. The new machine is entirely passvely cooled, but as a consequence, not astonishingly powerful — an Atom D510 (dual-core, 1.6GHz, HT) on Intel's D510MO board. That's fine, I won't use it for gaming, (much) video editing, etc. It's a 64-bit processor and I'm maxing the board out at 4GB of RAM (hey, that 1.6 CPU needs all the help it can get), which naturally raises the question of whether to install Ubuntu 64-bit or 32-bit (and if the latter, either live with the missing RAM, or do the PAE kernel dance). Although I've used Linux on servers for years, I'm very nearly a Linux desktop newbie and am not currently in the mood to fight driver wars and such. So if I'm setting myself up for failure with 64-bit, I'll live with the missing ~0.8GB or fiddle with PAE. But if 64-bit is entirely "ready," great, I'm there. So: Do most mainstream apps (now) play nicely with 64-bit Linux? I can't help but notice the "AMD" in the ISO image filename ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso and I know AMD lead the way on this stuff — does Ubuntu 64-bit play nicely with Intel processors? Just generally, would you recommend one or the other? (And if anyone has any experience with Ubuntu specifically on the D510 [32-bit or 64-bit] which might lead me one way or t'other, that would be useful.) Thanks in advance.

• Cheap dvr media server

  I would like to build a new computer to be used as a DVR and media server. I am thinking of using mythtv as the DVR software, but short of that decision I am completely open to suggestions. Requirements: Must be cheap. Must have low power consumption (since it will always be on). Should be quiet. Should be small. I'm really not sure where to start with this project, and am open to any hardware/software suggestions. Is it possible to build a small quiet and cheap system? *Keep in mind I am working on this project because I am tired of Cable rate increases, but I can't imagine living without a DVR so cost is very important and I would like the system to be sub $200.00. • VirtualBox Issue: virtualbox changed my Computer Name's ip address in Windows

  I had installed virtualbox 4.2.2 in Windows 7.   I have a printer connected to my computer that I'd like to share on my home network - shouldn't be a problem. The computer the printer is connected to is running Vista Ultimate x64. The computers I'm trying to share with are x86 Windows XP Professional and x86 Vista, so I need to install additional (x86) drivers. I checked the box to add x86 printer drivers and then it asked for the location of the drivers. I browsed to the location and clicked OK. It then prompted "Please provide path to Windows media (x86 processor). When I click "Browse..." it wants the location of a file named ntprint.inf It looks like it's asking for a Windows (x86) installation disk. I put one in but I can't seem to find this file on the 32-bit Vista install disk Where is the proper place to find this file?

• Mac does not recognize wide screen

  I am using Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 on my Mac mini, with Samsung monitor with default resolution 1360 x 768. My Mac mini is connected to Samsung VGA port by Apple mini port to VGA adapter. When starting, my Mac does not recognize the wide screen resolution and always starts in a 4:3 mode, (but it shows 1360x768 as the resolution in the settings). I have to do one of the following actions to bring my Mac to the wide screen resolution: (1) Changing to some other resolution and bring back to the default resolution. (2) Unplug the Apple mini port to VGA adapter and re-connect again. (3) Put the machine to sleep and wake it up again. I am using Ubuntu 12.04, (in a different partition) in the same hardware, but Ubuntu is perfectly recognizing the display.

• Fedora 12 - login panel: disable automatic login

  Hello Everybody I have just replaced my FC11 by the FC12. To put skype up and running I used autoten and choose to not have the automatic login enable. After running it the skype was working nicely. However the next time I restarted the machine, on the login panel appeared ""automatic login"" option. I went to /etc/gdm/custom.conf and added the command AutomaticLoginEnable=false Restart the system and although automatic login isn't active anymore, the ""automatic login"" option still appears as if it were an option to be picked from the login panel. I googled around but didn't find how to get rid of it. Any suggestions? All comments are highly appreciated.

• Mac OS can't connect to SMB shares after sleep

  I used to access my local Windows 2008 file server's SMB shares on my recent (3 weeks old) MacBook Pro without problems. However, for a few days now, it fails to (re-)connect to the server after it woke up from sleep mode. Finder just shows "connecting..." and hangs indefinitely. The same thing happens when I try it from the command line (mount -t smbfs). This happens via both WiFi and cable, I also tried turning networking off and back on. The only thing that helps is a reboot. Any hints?

• Firefox 4, 5 hang on Windows XP

  I've been having a lot of trouble with Firefox 4 and 5 hanging on my Windows XP machine. I've often found a temporary solution of uninstalling and reinstalling. Recently I deleted my Firefox profile to get a clean start. But nothing seems a reliable solution. The only plugin that I have is Firebug. My machine is a bit low on RAM, with only 2 GB. Am I missing something? Any troubleshooting steps that you would recommend? I've come to expect Firefox to be very stable, and that has not at all been my experience lately.

• Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901: Remap orange "My Computer" button

  I have a Lenovo Mini Wireless Keyboard N5901 (a.k.a. Part No. 57Y6336) that I'm using with an HTPC running Windows 7. The remote comes with an orange button in the top-left corner that by default, when pressed, opens the Windows "My Computer" window. I would like to remap / reprogram this button to act like the green "Windows Media Center" button instead on a Windows Media Center (WMC) remote; that is, open Windows Media Center if it isn't already open, or go to the WMC homepage if WMC is already open. I've tried several keyboard-remapping utilities (as recommended in other, more general "how to remap keyboard key?" SuperUser.com questions) including SharpKeys, Key Mapper, and KeyTweak, with no luck so far. None of these utilities recognize the orange button -- they all do recognize that some key was pressed, but display a value for the key of "unsupported" or something similar. I was able to use a utility called Keyboard Scan Code Generator to determine that a press of the orange button has a KeyData value of 16777217 (0x1000001), and a "Virtual Code" value of 182. (The other "media" buttons on the N5901 have the same KeyData value, but different Virtual Code values). I'm not sure at this point where in Windows this keystroke is being interpreted as a command to open "My Computer." There is no special software / driver for this device; it worked out of the box with Windows 7, no special driver install necessary. Is there any way to accomplish this? • Whys is System process listening on Port 80?

  I am running Windows 7 RC1. I have multiple issues getting IIS to work on my system and today when I installed a new application and I tried to load it using http:\localhost\MyApplication I get absolutely no errors and I get no page load. Just a pretty, white blank page. I did some digging and I found something about some other process listening on port 80 so I did a scan using netstat -aon | findstr 0.0:80 and discovered that PID 4 was listening on that port. PID 4 does not show in task manager so I fired up Process Explorer and it showed me that PID 4 is the System process. (Multiple google searches seems to indicate that System always uses PID 4). Since then I am basically stuck. I have no idea why System needs port 80 and what to do about it. If you google the following strings you will find two helpful Experts-Exchange articles at the top of the search results and you can read them for some helpful information. (If I gave the direct URL to the pages then Experts-Exchange would ask you to pay...but when you click on the results from a google search you can scroll all of the way to the bottom to read the exchanges.) Here are the google searches... "System Process is listening on port 80 (Vista)" "SYSTEM Process is listening on Port 80 and Preventing IIS Default Website from Running" The last entry from the first result showed how to do a trace of http.sys at the following URL: http://blogs.msdn.com/wndp/archive/2007/01/18/event-tracing-in-http-sys-part-1-capturing-a-trace.aspx Trace showed nothing useful. Any thoughts?

So far I've only seen Roboform's ability to fill out fields in web browsers and Windows GUI apps. I'm an app developer and sometimes I need to use Telnet/SSH. • Getting a VMnet0 error in VMWare workstation after updating host computer from Windows 8 to 8.1

  Yesterday, I updated my computer from Windows 8 to 8.1. I have VMWare Workstation 10 running Windows XP on this computer and prior to the update I had no issues connecting to my network. However, since updating, I haven't been able to connect to any network and I'm getting the following error: "The network bridge on device VMnet0 is not running. The firtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network. Failed to connect virtual device Ethernet0" I've checked all of my settings which currently have my network adapter set for a bridged connection and under device status "connected" is checked. Not really sure where to go from here, but after doing some research I have seen that others users have reported getting this error when updating the OS (any OS, not windows 8 specifically) of the host computer. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

• Getting fields_for and accepts_nested_attributes_for to work with a belongs_to relationship

  I cannot seem to get a nested form to generate in a rails view for a belongs_to relationship using the new accepts_nested_attributes_for facility of Rails 2.3. I did check out many of the resources available and it looks like my code should be working, but fields_for explodes on me, and I suspect that it has something to do with how I have the nested models configured. The error I hit is a common one that can have many causes: '@account[owner]' is not allowed as an instance variable name Here are the two models involved: class Account < ActiveRecord::Base # Relationships belongs_to :owner, :class_name => 'User', :foreign_key => 'owner_id' accepts_nested_attributes_for :owner has_many :users end class User < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :account end Perhaps this is where I am doing it 'rong', as an Account can have an 'owner', and may 'users', but a user only has one 'account', based on the user model account_id key. This is the view code in new.html.haml that blows up on me: - form_for :account, :url => account_path do |account| = account.text_field :name - account.fields_for :owner do |owner| = owner.text_field :name And this is the controller code for the new action: class AccountsController < ApplicationController # GET /account/new def new @account = Account.new end end When I try to load /account/new I get the following exception: NameError in Accounts#new Showing app/views/accounts/new.html.haml where line #63 raised: @account[owner] is not allowed as an instance variable name If I try to use the mysterious 'build' method, it just bombs out in the controller, perhaps because build is just for multi-record relationships: class AccountsController < ApplicationController # GET /account/new def new @account = Account.new @account.owner.build end end You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! The error occurred while evaluating nil.build If I try to set this up using @account.owner_attributes = {} in the controller, or @account.owner = User.new, I'm back to the original error, "@account[owner] is not allowed as an instance variable name". Does anybody else have the new accepts_nested_attributes_for method working with a belongs_to relationship? Is there something special or different you have to do? All the official examples and sample code (like the great stuff over at Ryans Scraps) is concerned with multi-record associations.

• OSX telnet not working from localhost

  Telnet from my mac OSx doesn't work while it works from the AWS instances and other networks. I have no local firewalls. Nothing related in /var/log/system In the below transcript, the telnet hangs at "Trying 74.125.136.26..." I have tried many different addresses across multiple domains.. same result !   I have Mac2Tivo app running, and I can put video files on Tivo. Tivo supposedly supports avi and various other encoding, but half the time video's don't play. I'm pretty sure this has something to do with encoding options. So the question is, what is a good Handbrake preset to use for viewing stuff on Tivo?

• Mac Mini Wake on Lan

  My Mac Mini has a setting in the Energy Saver category called Wake for Ethernet network access. Now the way I read this option is that any network access to the Mac whilst it is asleep will wake it up, but it doesn't. I have read that I have to send it the magic packet to wake it up, but what I really want to do is be able to simply attempt to access the Mini over the network and it wake up on demand without sending a magic packet. Can this be done? If it helps I am using a Netgear router.
