• Isn't Java a quite good choice for desktop applications?

  At present most applications are still developed with C++, painfully. Lack of portability, in compatible libraries, memory leaks, slow compilation, and poor productivity. Even if you pick only a single from these shortages, it's still a big headache. However the surprising truth is that C++ remains the first choice for desktop applications. Compared to C++ Java has lots of advantages. The success in server side development shows that the language itself is good, Swing is also thought to be as programmer friendly as the highly recognized QT framework (No, never say even a single word about MFC!). All the disadvantages of C++ listed above has a solution in Java. "Performance!", Well that might still be the problem but to my experience it's a slight problem. I'd been using Java to decode some screen video and generate key frames. The video has a duration of more than 1 hour. The time spent on an average machine is just 1 minute. With C++ I don't expect even faster speed. In recent days there are many news on the JIT performance improvements, that make us feel Java is gradually becoming very suitable for desktop development, without people realizing it. Isn't it?

  currently, I am working on a 2d rpg game which is similar to final fantasy 1-4. I can load up a tiled map and the sprite can walk freely on the map. However, I will like to create a wall for it to stop walking through it. I created three tiled layer Background, Collision, Overhead and one Collision object layer with rectangles only. "How do I handle collisions with the object layer in the tiled map?"   This is a problem I've been having, When making a set number of filled circles at random locations on a JPanel and applying a gravity (a negative change in the y), each of the circles collide.   We have to write an administration panel for many customers. But we want to have just one administration panel, and use it in various projects. This admin panel will have basic components such as access control logic, maker-checker system in changes, user logging and etc. It will also have reporting for the customer, logs of transaction of the customer (which can vary according to the industry such as mobile banking, banking, ticket sales). These components may have to be modified according to the business. So we are thinking about the architecture here, Is it OK to use jars of every basic components, and bring them together on a glue application? Or should we build each component as WARs and make interfaces between them? If there are any more ideas, it will be appreciated.

  What is the best way performance wise to do this? When I click a tile I want it to get the distance and if I am close enough I can interact with the tile. One way would be to find the tile by doing mouse / tile width when I click correct? But then how would I get that tiles position? I know how to find the distance I just don't know how to get a certain tiles position from the array when I click it

• Basic Java drawing program: issue with squares

  I'm trying to create a simple drawing program that creates a square where the user clicks and drags. The square displays correctly as long as either x or y remain positive with respect to the original click position. If both x and y are negative with respect to the original click position, the square grows/shrinks, but also wanders about the screen. Is there a way to swap the origin point from top-left to bottom-right or to keep the square from wandering?

So I'm wondering what the chances are that you still have to work with 1.4, thus being forced to go without JPA, EJB3 etc. In your answer, please also state the branch of company you work for. • Java file manager won't load in Firefox

  I am using Webmin and I can't get the file manager to load in Firefox. It is a simple, Java based file manager. When I try to load it I get the following error: This module requires java to function, but your browser does not support java Internet Explorer works fine and I have yet to try on Chrome. Java is installed and I have the same problem on Windows and Linux. Java seems to work fine with everything else, with the exception of webcams. Any advice on the issue would be appreciated. Edit: I just checked and it doesn't work in Chrome either.

  This is the second time I've had a drive-by executable installed on my machine using the following: Google Chrome 6 (latest) Windows 7, UAC on This happened while I was browsing for images to add to a gaming.se post; one of the sites I visited (to get an image of a transfer cable) must have had drive-by browser exploit code running. UAC alerted me that a weird temporary executable wanted to run, and I declined, but I still got the fake antivirus executable running on my machine. Sigh.. I do have Java installed because I upload stuff monthly to clearbits.net and their uploader is a Java plugin. So my best guess is, websites are doing drive-by installs using the massive numbers of zero-day vulnerabilities in the Java browser plugins. For now, I have uninstalled Java, which works. But I wondered if I could disable the Java plugin in Google Chrome instead. So, how do you disable these vulnerable plugins in Google Chrome? I can't find the UI.

  I have recently managed to get my employer to pay for a vps. I teach and asked the vps provider to enable Perl, Python, Ruby, Tomcat and Java. They've done the first four (really quickly) but have got back to me asking which parts of Java I need. I think the Java Virtual Machine is a given but what other S/W do I need to get installed? I think by getting the vps I now have the chance to teach Enterprise Java and want to get into Java Message Server and Enterprise patterns. Can I get Glassfish installed or is that a silly question? • Tuning OpenVZ Containers to work better with Java?

  I have a 8 GB RAM Server (Dedicated) and currently have KVM Virtual Machines running on there (successfully) however i'm considering moving to OpenVZ as KVM seems a bit overkill with a lot of overhead for what i use it for. In the past i have used OpenVZ Containers, hosted by myself and from other providers and Java doesn't seem to work well with them.. One example is that if i give a container 2 GB RAM ( No burst) (with or without vswap doesn't matter) a java instance can only be tuned to use at very most 1500 MB of that RAM (-Xmx, -Xms). Ideally, i wish to be able to create "Mini" containers with about 256MB, 512MB, 768 RAM and run some java instances in them. My question is: I'm trying to find an ideal way to tune a OpenVZ container configuration to work better with Java memory. Please, don't suggest anything related to Java settings, i'm looking for OpenVZ specific answers.. Though i welcome any suggestion if you feel it may help me. Much Appreciated, Daniel

• Need old version Firefox Java plugin

  I need to use Java 1.6.0_20 for the software I'm running. I went to the Oracle website and downloaded jre1.6.0_20 and installed it on my computer, but can't seem to get Firefox to load Java. If I download directly from http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp, the plugin works fine but is the wrong version, and I can't find on www.java.com anywhere to download any of the previous versions. According to the help (can't post link because of spam prevention), I need to go into the Java Control Panel and enable it for Mozilla. I've done this multiple times, but every time I go in to the control panel and check the box, click Apply and Save, as soon as I go back in the box is unchecked. Does anyone know either why the box is unchecked, or where I can download the old JRE that also is configured for Firefox?

Now, I just tried to play minecraft the other week and I receive the error "fatal error (1)" and get a black screen (this is on the online free version). Now, I searched for java and found that I have Java 32 bit. I cannot uninstall it on Revo uninstaller or Windows uninstaller. What should I do?

  Hello, I'm trying to install Java's JRE, however I'm running into problems. Recently the JRE was uninstalled on this computer, and when I try to reinstall I get this error 2753. I've looked online and the best page I've found to try and help is this one: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=182720 Which says to uninstall Java using Revo or Windows Cleanup. However nether program says I have Java installed. From what I've read this is a uninstall problem when Java is not really uninstalled. How do I make sure Java is completely uninstalled? Do you have any other suggestions for me to try?

• Black screen appears when booting new install of 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

• ORE graphics using Remote Desktop Protocol

  Oracle R Enterprise graphics are returned as raster, or bitmap graphics. Raster images consist of tiny squares of color information referred to as pixels that form points of color to create a complete image. Plots that contain raster images render quickly in R and create small, high-quality exported image files in a wide variety of formats. However, it is a known issue that the rendering of raster images can be problematic when creating graphics using a Remote Desktop connection. Raster images do not display in the windows device using Remote Desktop under the default settings. This happens because Remote Desktop restricts the number of colors when connecting to a Windows machine to 16 bits per pixel, and interpolating raster graphics requires many colors, at least 32 bits per pixel.. For example, this simple embedded R image plot will be returned in a raster-based format using a standalone Windows machine:  R> library(ORE) R> ore.connect(user="rquser", sid="orcl", host="localhost", password="rquser", all=TRUE)  R> ore.doEval(function() image(volcano, col=terrain.colors(30))) Here, we first load the ORE packages and connect to the database instance using database login credentials. The ore.doEval function executes the R code within the database embedded R engine and returns the image back to the client R session. Over a Remote Desktop connection under the default settings, this graph will appear blank due to the restricted number of colors. Users who encounter this issue have two options to display ORE graphics over Remote Desktop: either raise Remote Desktop's Color Depth or direct the plot output to an alternate device. Option #1: Raise Remote Desktop Color Depth setting In a Remote Desktop session, all environment variables, including display variables determining Color Depth, are determined by the RCP-Tcp connection settings. For example, users can reduce the Color Depth when connecting over a slow connection. The different settings are 15 bits, 16 bits, 24 bits, or 32 bits per pixel. To raise the Remote Desktop color depth: On the Windows server, launch Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration from the Accessories menu.Under Connections, right click on RDP-Tcp and select Properties.On the Client Settings tab either uncheck LimitMaximum Color Depth or set it to 32 bits per pixel. Click Apply, then OK, log out of the remote session and reconnect.After reconnecting, the Color Depth on the Display tab will be set to 32 bits per pixel.  Raster graphics will now display as expected. For ORE users, the increased color depth results in slightly reduced performance during plot creation, but the graph will be created instead of displaying an empty plot. Option #2: Direct plot output to alternate device Plotting to a non-windows device is a good option if it's not possible to increase Remote Desktop Color Depth, or if performance is degraded when creating the graph. Several device drivers are available for off-screen graphics in R, such as postscript, pdf, and png. On-screen devices include windows, X11 and Cairo.   I am trying to get a custom destop icon to be displayed for my app but for some reason no matter what I do the same default java icon shows up. I have tried everything I can think of and gone and compared my jnlp file with others whose icons seem to work ok. According to everything I have read the following should work fine. • Cannot create Desktop shortcut

  I have a WiX project and I want to automatically create a ProgramMenu and Desktop shortcut. I've tried the following but the Desktop shortcut is not created.
