• Understanding Backtracking in C++

  I have a good basic understanding of the fundamentals of C++, I also have an understanding of how recursion works too. I came across certain problems like the classic eight queens problem and solving a Sudoku with Backtracking. I realize that I'm quite lost when it comes to this, I can't seem to be able to get my mind around the concept of going back in the recursion stack and starting again in order to solve the problem. It seems easy with a pen and paper but when it comes to writing code for this, I'm confused on how to begin attacking these problems. It would be helpful if there were a tutorial aimed at beginners to backtracking or if there were a good book where this was covered. If somebody can shed light on this topic or give me some links to decent references, I'd be really grateful. And yes I do know that it would be easier in functional languages but I'd like to understand the implementation in imperative languages too.

At present, we are trying to define: Beginners Intermediates Advanced Experts (and/or Masters) Similar to an apprenticeship, you would need to demonstrate specific skills to achieve different levels. Right now, we have identified beginner programming skills as: Object - method, attributes, inheritance Variable - math, string, array, boolean - all are objects Basic arithmetic functions - precedence of functions String manipulation Looping - flow control Conditionals - boolean algebra This is a first attempt, and it is a challenge since we know the natural tension between programming and software engineering. How would you create such a skills-based ranking for JavaScript in this manner? • Best place to install apps

  I am completely new to Ubuntu and I must say AskUbuntu and you folks are of great help. So now when I have started installing and playing with apps, my question is what is the best place to install/download apps? Like in Windows it usually goes under your C: drive and then you manage it under Program Files. Linux structure is quite different with a different folder hierarchy. I have attached the directory structure of my machine as well. I thought this question would help lot of beginners.

• 2D Game Dev Resources/Tutorials for Windows (Phone) 8 Development?

  I am really exited about the launch of windows 8, windows phone 8 so I decided to start learning how to develop games for them. I was even more exited when I found out that html, css, javascript can be used to develop apps for these platforms. I'm familiar with some standard html, css3 that i used to develop some websites, but I only know some VERY basics of javascript. I know things like HTML5 canvas and image sprites can be used to develop games, but I haven't found any tutorials that I understood good enough ;/ So I am asking you now. Can you suggest any good tutorials/resources (preferably video) that start from beginners level and go to advanced into game development with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. It would be really good if such tutorials concentrated on game development for mobile phones (e.g. detecting when user touches the screen, using optimised images for hi res and standard displays, adopting to screen size etc) Oh.. and I forgot to mention that I am only interested in 2d game development.

  This question seems to be asked previously on this site but the audience targeted are different. I am an Engineering student who knows Python, C and familiar with Java(learning now; good at fundamentals) & HTML. Now, I want to develop facebook & Android apps. I went through their respective documentations but couldn't really understand and thought to search for beginner books but they have been written from too basic. (There is an beginner's android book for from APress for people who have no idea of programming). My problem is, I am unable to find the right book to learn.   A few other students and I are forming a group that wants to become good at what we do: websites. We are making websites for free for friends at the moment in order to get ourselves some experience and to learn from each other. We are about to finish our first website this week. In 6 months time we plan to have a portfolio and hope to start charging for websites. The issue is that we are all beginners and we are unsure about how to keep records of the websites we do. • Can you recommend a good tutorial on building custom package versions?

  After installing Ubuntu 11.04 I was disappointed by the fact there are still Scala 2.7 (when 2.8 is long ago current actual branch) and Mono 2.6 (when pretty a time has passed after 2.8 release). I am not sure I could build all the packages for Mono myself, but I'd like to try making my own custom version of Scala package (and I want my system to accept it not as a different package but a version of the original, so that if I put it into a configured repository, the system will automatically upgrade to it from currently installed original 2.7). Can you recommend a good tutorial on this subject (Ubuntu deb packages building and hacking for beginners)?

• Why is it taking so long to open the Ubuntu Help Center?

  When I click on the Help Center Icon in the 'System' menu, it takes more than a minute to launch the program. More than a minute, for a text only program seeming like a website! All my other programs work fine, and I saw this problem also on other computers. Is there a reason for this? Will it be fixed? I think it is an important issue for beginners. • Any learning/studying material for C/C++ that use game programming as learning context out there?

  As most of game programming is done - I read on this very site - in C/C++ I was wondering if there is any learning/studying material for C/C++ that would target specifically game programming. I am not looking for material about "developing games" or "software architecture for games", but rather for material that uses "game programming" as the CONTEXT for introducing and illustrating C/C++ features, idioms, programming techniques, etc... With a simile: think to the GOF book on design patterns. There, they used "developing a text-editor" as a context for introducing design patterns, but the book is most definitively not a book about "developing text-editors". Thanks in advance for your time and advice! PS: My background: I am a programmer with a solid experience in OO scripting languages and only some experience in C and Assembler (on AVR microcontrollers), so I am thinking to mid-to-advanced level material, rather than tutorials for beginners, although it might be interesting to take a look to the latter ones if nothing else is available.

• Choosing a mobile advertising mediator over going it alone

  We have finished our first game for IOS/Android. We would like to give it away adding ads to it. I have been reading a lot about the subject but it is a bit overwhelming for starters. From what I read, it seems there are some important points to have into consideration: 1) Do as much localization as you can (target your audience with ads they could be interested for the zone they live in). 2) Do not over advertise in your application. At this moment we have decided to go with AdMob. It seems an easy option to setup for beginners and have a good set of ad networks. My question is, will we earn less for example for iAds using adMob than implementing iAds without a mediator? Are adMob paying less than others (this is what I remember for some artilces I read)?. It would be nice to hear from people with experience on this to let us light our way a bit.

• Game maps with "counties" that are split along lines that aren't necessarily straight

  I want to create a game environment that supports a 2D map. This is a really basic map, but must be split along lines that are not necessarily straight. So imagine a country with county boundaries. I then want to be able to detect drag / drop events within these counties. What I'm really looking for here is a pointer to where to start on this (how it has been done before - any existing libraries out there), as I'm sure that what I'm trying to do is not new - although I can't find a beginners guide for this anywhere.
